- In this video we attempt to do a Oculus Quest 2 battery replacement. I was surprised by how difficult the process of accessing the battery was. Repairs like this are why we need to stand up to companies Meta who are making products harder and harder to repair. Hope you guys enjoy this one, the repair took almost 4 hours.

Suddenly Apple's idea of an external battery pack for the Vision Pro seems brilliant.
My thoughts exactly + there’s much less risk of a battery related incident
@@PhoneRepairGuru And with the battery in it, it's too heavy on your face.
@@jameswollthe people who tried the vision pro said it was still front heavy even with an external battery. The problem is not the weight, it's that It isn't balanced, the headsets with the battery on the rear are much more comfortable.
Pico 4 have the battery on the back, would be interesting to watch a replacement on those.
@@Phenix0998 many years ago HTC made a headsets with the battery on the back and user replaceable so it's not impossible to fix both problems.
That's ridiculous. Those EU regulations about easily replaceable batteries need to target these devices too.
u can always use it as a wired headset
@@SHAUNOFTHEWEEKtrue
@@SHAUNOFTHEWEEKthat doesn't make the quest any more repairable.
small price to pay to make it weigh as little as possible, dont want to open these anyways as you can easily damage the lenses and screens
iirc the law targets all portable devices and the quest 2 is a portable device
The battery is quite possibly the quests biggest issue (mainly the battery's health)
Yea which is why I always have a power bank with me when using airline on pc when the battery goes down

Wow, that looked like the most complex battery replacement ever. Insane
It's a big step up from the Quest 1 which you could not replace the battery for at all, in any way. Hopefully the Quest 3 is better in this regard.
In the end, Meta knows that VR will advance faster than these batteries will die. 90-99% of users will just throw out their Quest 2 when it dies, because by the time that happens, the Quest 4 will already be out. Even if you fix the battery on the Quest 2, it's still barely going to be able to run future VR games (hell it barely runs some VR games now without crashing)
I don't really repair devices myself nowadays, but I think battery is something that SHOULD always be easily replaceable.
Having to throw away device away or need trained technician to replace battery is just ridiculous.
Dude look at how complex this thing is. It's so densely packed. Sometimes it's not that simple. There is probably nothing else they could have done, that's where the battery had to go
@@hustla818well considering it’s at the very top. feel like it they could have made only the top part removable.
There's no reason why they couldn't have engineered the battery to be easier to remove.
@crooker2 idk what's wrong with this video's headset specifically, but generally the quest batteries (even the quest 1) are just fine after all these years. holding back high tech from advancing just so u can take a battery out is just not worth it
@@discminute I bought my Quest 2 on launch. It still seems to work fine. The point is, however, that the battery in ANY device is the part with a limited lifespan. Part of the right-to-repair movement stipulates that the battery, if nothing else, should be replaceable to extend the life of the device. We live in a disposable electronics world, but I want my 3D headset to last at least as long as it is supported by the software.
The battery could have been easily accessed from the start, the black box above the lenses contains the battery and gets removed in like 5-6 screws max. Not an ideal place to find it but much better then disassembling the entire thing
You still need to remove the board and lenses to access those screws, though
@@DaneH64 only the first time you replace it....then you can leave those far back screws out and only use the screws you can access behind the proxy sensor at that point it'd be hotswappable :)
@@DaneH64 not the lenses nor the front panel, there are videos of people getting direct access to the battery from there
@@michaelsamir3611 could you link the videos?
Let's hope Quest 3 battery replacements are going to be a bit easier, since these headsets are becoming genuine alternatives to consoles and should be fixable as consoles and phones- I've seen multiple accounts of people taking a Quest 2 over an Xbox Series S.
Same
That’s me I have a ps5 and a pc I was going to buy a series s but I did some research and I got a quest 2 and it’s the best because now I have a different type of system
heh, they'll probably glue everything together and won't use any screws anymore, so you can't open it without totally destroying it.
I mean... if you have a PS5, PC and Switch and can't find a PSVR2 or don't have anything to play with PSVR1, you'd be better off with a Quest 2 over a Series S. Hell, you're better off taking a digital edition PS5 over a Series S just from a game compatability stance alone.
Yeah I doubt that! It's smaller probably the same ahit stuffed in a smaller package
"The fight for right to repair is much more important" Hell yeah brother!
oh hi Salem techsperts
The greatest technician that ever lived
THE GREATEST TECHNICIAN THATS EVER LIVED
The Quest 1 has its battery in the same location, but the surround on it is actually four panels rather than a one piece frame, all you need to do to get to it is remove the strap mounts, peel away the fabric, then undo all the screws to peel the front and rop penels away and you get full access.
This is a massive step backwards, despite the generational increase forwards.
Well the positioning of the battery in the bottom makes sense for weight distribution. But they they should have made a door of some sort to access the battery to replace it.
Great videos, it sucks to see more and more companies making their products harder to repair :(
Bro you gotta understand that some tech just can't be easy to repair. Do you have any idea what a technological marvel a fully contained vr goggle is? How do you make it any less complex than what it is? It's either gotta be hard to repair, or not exist at all. I rather have it exist
@@hustla818 bro got rubbed the wrong way.
i feel like companies intentionally do this, but not fully. they do it so that people don't get encouraged to repair the vr and instead buy a new one, thus, more money. and also because of sacrifice, since VR's actually have to FIT on your face, it has to be compact, leaving little space for a battery
@originalname9789 that's not true because every major company I can think of offers repairs if your device is out of warranty. If your warranty has run out and your quest 2 has an issue you can't repair yourself, you can send it to meta to fix. If your ps5 breaks, you can send it to sony to fix. And there are also repair shops that will fix most electronics, like the guy on this channel. So no they aren't made in a way for you to buy a new one when it breaks, because they're repairable, even if you can't fix em someone else can. Something truly unrepairable would be a device that can't be disassembled non destructively, you would have to break it to open it
@@hustla818 you really got rubbed the wrong way man, and plus, i also said vrs have to be complex due to their size, so you made an entire half paragraph essay for no fuckin reason
interesting to see how oculus took a step back since the battery was relatively easy to access with the quest 1 (although you had to slice and peel back some fabric, which was annoying)
That's a $5 tip for you to help the guy get rid of that thing 😂
😂😂😂😂
It's a unciulated Canadian note. Basically garbage

Move the battery wire to the outside so you can make an external battery.
:)
wow! this is an incredibly complicated replacement. i really thought you wouldn't be able to put it all back together.
The fact you did this is crazy. I take apart quest 2 controllers and that is a massive pain, so i can only imagine doing a Q2.
That was amazing what you did with those selfie pictures over time! Really cool to watch
If the battery is on the outer side, it will cause the weight imbalance and lead to heavier front side that will cause pain on the nose over longer period of time. It's a logical design for the battery to at that place for the balance and comfort of user. Besides, external strap attached battery packs are available to use.
That won't help if the battery explodes or turns into a devil's capri-sun
like pico vr headset
Once the battery begins to go even with an external strap you won't be able to keep the device booted.
9:03 You can't obtain an original or OEM battery; all the batteries for sale out there are from scrapped devices. The battery on my Quest 2 is starting to deteriorate so I purchased one from the only source that I could find (Ali Express) and when it turned up, it was obviously used. I didn't bother fitting the battery since I doubt it would have much more life in it than the original it was to replace.
No way, you have legit read my mind my guy. Ive been waiting to get my hands on one of these!!

I will give you kudos for the patience and stamina, I had no idea it would be this difficult. I have been looking at Oculus Quest 2 / 3. After watching this Im on hold to purchase. This is insane.
Well I wouldn’t let this stop you from getting one. You most likely won’t need to get it replaced unless you cause damage to the actual battery. I’ve had my quest 2 since launch day and have played it almost everyday since for usually 5 hours and mine is perfectly fine
first things first, excellent dissemble and reassemble. secondly really nice video editing too.
Designing a headset with a external battery would reduce weight, thereby increase user comfort and also heat issues arising from battery discharge further loading battery consumption to fans.
Must be the reason why they are designing it this way, keep heat source away from the circuit board. By putting the battery out front, dramatically increases the wieght load on the users nose, which could be overcome by tighting the headband causing stress headaches.
Solution, remove battery altogether, add a usb c port to a redsigned faceplate with air vents easily manufactured on a 3d printer. Attach battery to a belt, back pack.

Nice work dude. 👍👍
That board is looks next level.
The "Unscrew" never gets old
I'm pretty sure they put that battery there for proper weight distribution Because if they put in the front it would probably be top heavy
An easy solution would be to have the battery mounted remotely to the back of the head strap, with a robust replaceable coupler to the headset. This would actually give superior weight distribution, because it would counterbalance the headset. I work in engineering, part of design is keeping service in mind.. but these companies aren't incentivised to do so.
@@Ty-sm9cvisn't that kinda what they did with the Pico headsets and the Quest Pro?
@@Ty-sm9cvDoing that is more expensive. When designing a budget headset tradeoffs will be made to keep costs down.

It’s not really their fault it is incredibly difficult to fit all components into a space that small while maintaining accessibility. Not to mention the problem of structural integrity to protect said components.
You raise some valid points, but what does years worth of structural integrity matter when the whole thing needs chucking because the batteries died in under a year?
@@theninjascientist689 you also need to remember that the thing needs to be as efficient as possible. Also just get it repaired by a professional or you can wing it any way you look at it you can fix it with a few days of time and energy.
It's on the outside, it literally could have been removable by a hatch. It's just asshole design to make people throw it away and by a Quest 3.
@@luketorpedo you still have to wire the battery also a hatch on the front of a headset you sweat while wearing which leads to a lithium battery that is a brilliant idea.
@@PotatosAreTheMostVersitleFood removable batteries that don't need disconnection of connectors isn't new at all and can be low profile (see phones and laptops before user replacement went extinct). That much sweat I think is unlikely and even if it is, a gasket seal isn't impossible either. Both reasons you've given counter I think are pretty bad, don't give companies like this an excuse.

Wait for the quest 3. Trust me, it'll be way better, and with better cooling.
Hopefully Meta improves on the headstraps for the Quest 3. The design frankly sucks and the Elite Strap for my Quest 2 has hairline fractures less than a month after buying it.
@@farhanzulkiflee6598 The design is improved, and frankly even if they didt improve it, the point is that there will be many aftermarket straps to choose from that can suit your needs and desires.
That's why its good that the strap is removable, which is impossible with a rear mounted battery.

Best part of Video, those last punches to referee 😂😂😂
Question, do you ever forget where the screws go and have to rewatch your video just to see where it goes?
I've had my Quest 2 since launch, and I still use it. I have noticed the battery isn't fairing too well. I've found it dying much sooner than it used to, and it also can get hot after extended gameplay. Though, to be fair, I have a 10,000mah battery strapped to the back of the strap that I frequently use so that may be affecting things.
Interestingly, my original Oculus Go now no longer works unless it is plugged in. The batteries in these standalone headsets definitely are what is keeping them back.
