I've NEVER heard virtual desktop ever say ANYTHING. That freaked me the heck out just from watching it, I would have had a panic attack if I had that play while in VR trying to configure stuff. Creepy.

As an experienced steam deck vr player, here's something I could tell:
-Dont use Oculus, it just dont work
-I recommend using ALVR, since it has controller emulation, resolution cutter, WIFI and cable etc.
-VR works on steamos, actually, but its horrifying so I use windows
yeah i’ll definitely try ALVR on windows if i revisit this video, seems like it would’ve worked better

Just a little tip about the boundary:
If you have developer mode on (which you have since you're using Sidequest) you can go into the quest settings and press System, Developer tab, and there you have to click Enable custom settings and turn off Physical space features, it just disables the boundary and the passthrough but once you open up a passthrough game/app passthrough works perfectly.
Oh interesting, I knew it disabled the passthrough but I didn’t know it still worked in passthrough apps.
"I hate windows"
u need to compile alvr for the steam deck
"i'm using windows"

I did the same basic thing, you don't have to self compile anymore, but it's still tedious with lots of steps where inevitably some piece of software has changed some steps and you have no guide that tells you that. That kind of thing always seems to be just a big headache. I'd buy virtual desktop a second time do you have it compatible with Linux.

Guys just remember that when valve makes a standalone headset there will not be any wifi and streaming delay, also running virtual desktop will indeed lag your game a bit so I think that there is a big chance that valve makes a good standalone vr headset!
Yeah tbh if quest had access to the steam store it would be so much better, if valve gets a strong standalone headset done itll definetly have steam included and possibly a pc like desktop enviroment reusing steamOS, or maybe they've somehow cooked a way to have a strong wireless connection to the headset with a good refresh rate.
lmfao when
Oh you poor poor hopeful soul... If only they decided to update the chipset instead of using a fucking xr2 like the q2 has. The valve standalone is prolly gonna have similar performance to the q2 for 5* the price based only on that one detail
Fresnel lenses, snapdragon xr2 gen 1, over 900 dollars. I feel sorry you had hope that it'd be a good standalone device lmao
i love how Virtual Desktop just decided to scold you
Genuinely really interesting to see, I was thinking about linking my Quest 2 to my steam deck at some point and trying this but at the end of the day, it was just too much of a hassle lol. I'm impressed by the Aussie internet speeds btw god damn, mine sucked when I used to live there
Could be worth trying to use the Quest as a big screen for 2D games, and I've heard that the ROG Ally works for VR if you'd be willing to grab one of those, but otherwise yeah definitely not worth the effort. Our internet speeds have definitely gotten better, but they're still not great. Can't get symmetrical upload speeds on household plans yet, my upload is still about 10-15mbps
my upload is still less than 1 mbps@@probablyhades

you can get rid of the boundary by getting a meta dev acc and turning boundary off
Wait you only have 700 subs? I was legit expecting about 100k…
Real cool thing that you've done. Suprised no one else has done this before tbh. For the audio panning issue on 18:35, you have to set your audio track to mono instead of stereo (if your editing software supports that)_
I’d usually be able to do that, I think the iPad DaVinci had some audio workflow limitations.
why did you install edge on linux?
Games that I play in VR on my steam Deck that run well: budget cuts, cook-out, demeo, pistol whip, space pirate trainer, and super hot VR. These are just the ones that I've discovered in the last few days. I'm quite certain there are many others that will run on the steam deck just fine, you just have to look for the older games that have simpler graphics.
if you will go to 9:20 and turn on subtitles you will get Wendy's💀

"god forbit i try to upload anything", mate that's the realest thing I've ever heard, in my area I can get like 750mbps down but 50 up
50 mbps up is way way faster than almost everyone's upload speed (probably not many people watching this video considering the topic, of course, but most people who use computers don't anything that needs anywhere close to 50 up. Heck, even 25 up isn't a bottleneck for anything aside from file transfers. Enjoy your privelege. 😊
the videos i made that were shot on iPhone in 4K60 genuinely took hours to upload it was painful 😔

I didn't want to get Windows on my Steam Deck, so I just got it to work on Steam OS.
Using ALVR, you can get it working way easier, but it doesn't work great. Probably the same performance you were having.
The worst part is getting the damn headset to connect to the Deck, but once it finds the connection, it really isn't too bad.
Did you run into the firewall error I had? How did you fix it if you did?
@@probablyhades If I remember correctly, I think I had to type my password into the "konsole" and run it in admin mode, which is more complicated on Linux's stupid OS. And to make matters worse, it wasn't even a 100% fix. I have to turn ALVR on and off multiple times to get it to finally connect. However, once it DOES actually connect, it runs okay-ish.
@@BionicFreakOfficial mind if I ask, but how did you manage to run in admin mode? like what did you type into the console for it to prompt that? I'm kinda stuck but I'm intrested to get it running myself so any help would be appreciated!

The issue with this video is that you used a Quest 3 as the VR headset. If you use a native PCVR headset (like a first gen HTC Vive or first gen WMR headset), it will run MUCH better.

I don’t even use the deck for VR, but I’ve been using it as my main PC for a while and I find it very hilarious that the fans just kicked overdrive at random or during an update😂
Pro tip: you can turn on performance mode in battery settings if your using windows, this boosts performance, but consumes battery
Damn, this is good for the memes of the steam deck lul. Imagine if they actually make a steam deck for VR! That'd be crazy lul
On the note of SteamDeck and VR. One of my customers at work who used to come in regukarly and I were talking about the SteamDeck I bought (some tike around my birthday a few months ago) a few weeks later he buys an ROG Ally, for a but of context he's more of a VR guy, always talking about newly released VR titles and any game I mention he asks if it has VR support. All valid of course everyone's got a preference for gaming. Anyway, a week after he bought his Ally, he sold it, because he couldn't get VR games running on it...Baring in mind he also had a quest 2.
Although I do honestly think a valve licensed VR device that uses steamOS would be hella dope XD here's hoping for the Deckard(if that's the final name) to have a bright future.

And you wouldn't have to go through all of this if Steam Link just allowed VR streaming from a deck. Honestly I feel like they should have allowed users to try it with a warning in front of it saying that it probably won't run the best.
Even if it only allowed it in desktop mode it would’ve been way easier 😅

I see that you use Davinci Resolve for iPad, idk if it's the same than PC but for that case of audio problem at 18:52 right click on the audio, go to attributes, audio, it should show as mono and only one channel, switch it to stereo and put the same channel that is on "left" and set it to "right" too

At 13:01 the steam deck most likely shutdown due to either over clocking the components to handle the game and that takes more power so it most likely died but it could’ve overheated
That f1 reference was absolutely correct 😂
ALVR actually offers a linux version and ive seen some people get ALVR to work. before i had my pc i used to use my steam deck for vr.
Bro, please reply... How did you even get Skyrim to RUN at all? In both steamOS AND windows, whenever I try to run it, a black box pops open briefly and then closes. Have tried both before and after starting steamvr. Same result both times.
The latest rumour is that the Valve Deckard is a combination of a home console + wireless VR headset. It's not quite standalone, but it's more convenient in terms of a lighter headset that doesn't require much processing, thus better battery life, etc. Plus the console part could potentially have eGPU support for upgradability. We'll have to wait and see, though...
So sort of like what the Wii U did? That’d be interesting, I think Valve could pull it off. Maybe they’re practicing with the Quest Steam Link app 🤔
@@probablyhades Yeah, the only issue is price. Can Valve manage to sell a console + VR headset bundle and still manage to subsidise the pricepoint, like how they did for the Steam Deck? Either that or they might shoot for specs that are a bit lower than PS5. Either way, outside of UEVR and VR Chat, PCVR basically has very little relevency and is in need of a cheaper all-in-one solution that would make it more tempting to mainstream consumers.
I think on Windows the Steam Deck can't do hardware video encoding - I'm not entirely sure, but I heard something like that. Which would mean that not only are you getting a performance hit from having to encode video (i.e. a displayport-based headset like PSVR or Index would be faster), but it's happening on the CPU on top of that.
Interesting, that definitely could be the reason. PSVR 2 as a PC headset has been looking appealing to me lately, I’ll give it a try if I ever pick one up.
