Not sure if you tried with the Quest with the software issue - but there are a set of ADB drivers you can install on your PC before connecting it which may help. It's often used for sideloading apps etc.
People dunped quest 2 roms so it might be possible to install those it was used for updating the quest when updates came out but didnt update for some people
I've fixed a few using that method but it requires being able to get into the Sideload Update option on the recovery menu. From the sound of it, Steve's is just boot looping back to the recovery menu no matter what he presses. I have one like that as well, and can't sideload to it like the others. It might be possible to put it into sideload mode using external commands from a PC, but as far as I know Oculus security is going to prevent that. It seems to be a common issue on the Quest 2 with no solution as of yet - I'm going to hang on to mine until someone smarter than me figures it out, or I can use it for parts!
@@fadetonoir6152 Hmm, is it possible to root and install custom recoveries on Oculus Quest? Might be possible to fix it that way. Although I think that requires getting into it too. I wonder if it would possible to apply the fix to a working Quest and then soldering it's storage into the non-working one.
Hi Steve - I've fixed a fair few Oculus headsets and have encountered these problems before: For the original Quest, have you tried leaving it on charge for a while, like overnight or even 24 hours? I've had a few that seemed completely dead at first - no charge light, little to no current draw - but after leaving them for several hours they did eventually charge and come to life. Or, as someone else here has suggested, try jump charging the battery with a bench power supply. I think it's basically a result of the Quest being left unused for a long period of time (quite possible because it has another fault beyond that!). For the Quest 2 with the recovery mode bootloop - yeah, I have one like that too, and it seems it's a common issue with no known solution (yet!). I have fixed a few with bootloops where you can actually get into the sub menus - i.e. factory reset works but it just goes back to the recovery menu afterwards, but if you can get into the Sideload Update menu you can connect to a PC and reinstall the firmware via ADB which usually fixes it, so it seems like it's caused by corrupt system software, likely a failed update. But I also have one like yours, where selecting any option in the menu just makes it quickly bootloop back to recovery menu, so can't get to the point where I can sideload to it at all. Someone needs to figure out either how to put it into sideload mode from ADB (which may involve bypassing Oculus security) or somehow flashing to the firmware chip/motherboard directly. And the worst part is, even though this seems like a software issue that could easily be fixed by someone who knows more about how the headsets work, Oculus have flat out refused to service mine because it's out of warranty, even if I pay them. They don't do paid repairs at all, and I suspect that even with in-warranty "repairs" they just replace the headsets. It's so frustrating and such a waste - we really need some right to repair laws to force them to fix things.
Hey man I got a problem with my quest 2. Whenever I go to turn it on it shows the oculus logo but then cuts off and the screen goes black. I could still hear everything and all. I rebooted it through the app and it still has the problem. Would you happen to know a solution
fyi, the people that created the quest (brandon irbie and his team) all left the company in 2017 the day after the quest launch. The people hired to continue on the work on the quest had no experience with VR engineering and pretty much had to learn from scratch. The Quest 2 came mostly form Micheal Abrash's team upgrading the SOC and other components. That's why they will never offer replacement parts or a team in QC or CS that know the first thing about fixing or replacing parts. On top of the fact that Facebook infamously has a very weak warranty so that you are more likely to buy another $300 quest instead of spending time and effort fixing it. The Quest is pretty much a genius project left to be waiting to be reverse engineered by new VR engineers. The entire company has no clue how to actually build on it, develop it, or improve it. Which is why their next device, project cambria, is a completely different product that has left everyone very underwhelmed and not impressed, despite it's insane price and very limited use (for a market that will never want to use VR, especially from facebook). Zuckerburg is an insane sociopath scumbag that steals personal data to sell to nefarious and malicious groups. No body should be buying their products, no matter how good they are.
Why would they help you spend less money, when they can do nothing and have a good chance of you spending more money on a new one? Right to repair laws won't fix that. They certainly won't result in Meta doing something about bricked budget devices. If big tech could find a way to make you pay a subscription to possess hardware but never own it, they absolutely would. Indeed, that's a defined goal. The *only* way to win in consumerism is not to play the game.
@@tjmarx They probably think they wouldn’t get enough repairs in to have a pay a repair team. Also, right to repair would force them to release some info/schematics and parts, though they could still be very shady about how they do so.
3:58 before you throwing away a battery you should at least attempt to connect it to a linear power supply and attempt to force it to charge, it needs to charge a little in order to fool the BMS to allow standard charging. The BMS has probably disabled charging because the battery voltage is too low which doesn't mean the cells are actually bad!
@@halyapin that is EXACTLY what I'm looking for online, and I want to try it. I'm not sure how BMS boards work , if they measure the voltage only, or some kind of predictive chip with the original lipo cell capacity in mind , therefore changing the capacity would interfere but i don't think that's the case. It should work. Find a cell with the same discharge/charge current capabilities or better
You can mirror the quest 2 display to a phone or smart TV by downloading the oculus app on your phone or straight up casting from device to TV over Bluetooth WiFi as long as paired devices are on the same network 👍
Use "scrcpy" for mirroring the headset over ADB, it should even mirror content that the normal wireless mirroring doesn't do. To enable ADB, you may first enable the developer options.
Not to mention its useful for those who live remotely like myself. For all the hassle it would be to send an item to the manufacturer for repairs (who is most likely based in London in my case, some 400 miles away) it would be cheaper to just buy the same item brand new.
Really not an issue with the current state of VR by the time something is broken your headset should be outdated as hell. It's like being sad your Nokia 3310 doesn't work when everyone has moved on to the IPhone.
@@xXSinForLifeXx No. No. We should have the right to be able to repair our electronics. Those Oculus are now fit for parts, or worse. E-Waste. Whether it is out of date or not is irrelevant. We should not be OK with simply just buying another device if our current one breaks. If you can't repair your device, do you really own it?
@@gemazarusgaming1549 Yes you ofcourse you own the device what a silly statement. Owning something doesn't require it to be repairable by the owner. Tons of products cannot be repaired by the owner doesn't mean you don't own it. I don't disagree tho it would be better for it to be easily fixable. But atm it isn't a big deal because of how often you upgrade the headsets anyway. For instance my Rift CV1 cable is almost broken from all the movement and they don't sell replacements. But the headset is so old it would be useless to repair anyway I have already moved on to the Quest.
@@xXSinForLifeXx We'll have to respectfully disagree. There would be revolution if car manufacturers made it impossible to repair cars yourself. Why would I take my car to BMW to replace my brakes when I can do it myself for a fraction of the cost and some time... OR worse, what if all of a sudden, me ECU needed "retuning" because I am skilled enough to do the job myself? Have you seen the prices Apple charge for screen repair? And you have to go through them to avoid software locks and error messages or to retain features. We must have the Right to Repair. Companies not making replacement parts available is a deplorable practise and it is getting worse and worse. Because some people just accept it.
For the dead battery you can try to "jumpstart" it... find the main + & - pins. And its voltage. Connect a bench psu to those pins and just give it voltage for a bit. Then headset should see it again. It is possible to overcharge and possibly blow up the battery though with over current unless there is a built in bms inside battery.
For the head strap you can pull it completely out by releasing the velcro then gently prying up on the flat side where it goes into the headset arms. After the strap is removed you have to take the velcro off slightly to reveal a hole that gives access to the two screws holding the arms on either side. I've seen so many videos where people go about getting the fabric cover off in a way that is not reversable without significant tells that they had taken the headset apart.
Hi! I usually try to connect 4v at 0.25a to the + and - of a battery to get it to around 3.3v. The device sometimes starts recognizing the battery again and charges it. The protection in the battery kicked in and sometimes can be persuaded to work again.
@@878manu I've never seen a battery loosing capacity in newer devices. They loose their charge, and it has a protection circuit that detects when the voltage is below a certain limit and cuts out the contacts. Putting voltage on it it could re-enable it. If it does not, nothing bad happens it just won't work. I have a high success rate with this though if the protection does not contain some fail fuse that does not reset (like DJI batteries)
Exactly my toughts. I often have to kickstart batteries of All kinds. Usually the capacity is Bad after a deep discharge, but still netter than nothing. Plus, Li ion tend to still delivery some decent wattage nevertheless.
@@dannygrob im working with Industrial batteries, I know what u mean. I'm German so I can't deeply explain how this is called in English. Whatever, I'll try my best Lithium-Ion Batteries have little to no self discharge in comparison to lead acid batteries, but they are more sensitive to deep discharges (which this one is, since its on 0,0V). U will get it to charge, but it won't hold the level for long. Nearly every battery is not rescueable with method, cause draining much more than the deep discharge cell voltage (for Lead Acid Batteries this is 1,8V/C, vor NiCd it is 1,2V/C etc) will almost always prevent further chemical reactions in the battery, cause all electrons are gone.
Not only does 8 yr old me think your the coolest person in the world for taking apart electronics and fixing them like some kind of techno wizard but watching you fix these toys makes me wish I could fix my light up cat ball that goes in her play track. You win today.
Split the ball along the join, i carefully use a utility knife (Get some with with this if you need it) replace the button cells and glue the two halves back together. Excelent first project and hopefully the first of many.
Been watching your videos, you gave me the confidence to work on electronics, I've fixed my PS4 controller, and recently I asked if I could fix a PC could I keep it,I got to keep it.Thanks for your educational videos.
The Quest & Quest 2 need an account and phone number associated with it and to be signed in to connect to the Oculus/Meta server for an update. You also need the Oculus app on a phone to be logged in to the same oculus account and the phone needs to be near the Q1/Q2 (BT & location need to be on, on the phone to detect the quest). You CAN sideload an update. You need to sign up for a Developer Account as well. (and verify it with a CC). Many of us kept copies of different versions of the firmware. You will need to install SideQuest on your pc for your pc to "see" your Q1/Q2, an account is required for this as well. A longer way around updating/installing firmware is sideloading using ADB commands on a pc, but it's do-able. Once the quest is able to boot in to the Home menu you will be able to connect to the Oculus servers to catch up with updates. I'd suggest contacting support to say that you are the new owner, and how you came to own it, since the headset always has an account attached to it and you need to tx it in to your name. The serial number is under the right headstrap and Oculus will have you read that out to them while you're in contact with them. They also call/text your newly associated phone. It's a pretty complicated procedure to tx ownership of an account, which is good in case your headset is stolen. Oculus support is amazing. Also the controllers are specifically paired to a headset. You'll have to sort that out with Support as well. As for the battery situation, all is not lost. The quest can be connected to a pc via a usb-c cable and used for pcvr play (we refer to this as Rift play sometimes, since the Rift was pcvr not standalone), or continually plugged in to power or an external battery to power. As you'd know, sometimes a battery can be revived but I dont recommend anything but an original Oculus plug (the one that goes in to a power point on the wall) as cheaper ones/fakes have been known to melt the charging port on the headset. Not sure why the original owner of the broken controller didnt RMA it to Oculus since Oculus replaces controllers that break during game play or drift (tho a new firmware update recently is supposed to help with drift). You can "Cast" what you see in the headset to a pc or phone once you're logged in to your Oculus account. I personally cast to a laptop which is then connected to a big tv. Many of us Quest owners have become unofficial Tech Support to help out other owners. I'd be happy to help you with the updates etc in Discord, if you're interested. I watch many of your videos but this one especially interested me.. but it's not all over for you, there's still hope ;)
@@FXV56 Depending on the type of protection circuit, replacing the cell might work perfectly or it might permanently disable the battery, although usually single-cell protection circuits belong to the first category.
Hi ! For the first quest, when a battery shows 0v, it often means that that bms is in protection mode. You need to inject voltage directly through the connector of the battery and the protection will turn off (exact same case on most Nintendo switch).
Just replace the lipo cells and keep the old BMS board. Works almost every time for me. However, Dell, HP, and Apple(Macbook Pro's battery) doesn't let you do this. There are EPROM's in the battery to prohibit the device from charging the new cells I soldered into the laptop battery pack.
Hey, Tronics, To be able to share/record what you see on the Quest, you have 2 relatively easy options: 1. Pair the device to your phone with the oculus app. You can then put what you see from the headset to stream on your phone where you can record the screen. 2. Install the oculus software on your PC. In the folder where it is installed, there are a bunch of tools/utilites. One of them just opens up a window to display what you see on the headset. Record it with whatever screen recording software you like.
Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! The world is quickly headed for destruction, and sooner or later you will have to sit at the judgement seat and give an account for your actions. Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36). Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life! - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God tho. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc and you should get a response. Have a blessed day!
Yeah, I find it disturbing, that you can't buy such simple thing as battery, and device would work fantastic! So, where is green thinking and care for future? If battery is dead, it's dead... For Quest2, which was rebooting, I did long charging (a day and more) - it helped to get out of bootloop and reset and update it, just in case. Works still now.
One possible hardware reason I can think of for that Quest 2 issue: Typically that boot menu you see only comes on if you power it on with the vol+ or vol- buttons held down; could they possibly be defective and the device is picking them up as constantly pressed?
Carefully dismantle the battery pack by peeling off all the plastic wrapping etc until you can access the built in battery protection board, the use a bench power supply to charge the battery up to the cutoff voltage for the battery, by finding the input terminals to the battery protection board and connecting them to the bench supply. once the battery is above the cutoff voltage the battery will most likely charge normally.
I bought the BW-100 based on seeing you use it. I have to say it's an awesome product. I've used it on several non responsive tiny switches and buttons and they work great now.
The software issue on the quest 2 is probably the easiest thing to repair on it. Can't believe you gave up so quickly. You can hard reboot it, then run an adb command via windows. There's loads of coding online for it and sub-programs to sideload from. It's worth fixing as it's still worth about £250 / $300
hmm. The imo "messy" component layout and loads of glue in the headset give me 1st Gen vibes ^^ Nice to see the guts of this thing. Love the diverse repairs lately
I have a mk1 with the dead battery - I stripped it out and installed a 2s lipo balance socket on an extension wire so I could power the headset from a large lipo attached to be back of the head strap, it not only powers the headset but it also balances the headset better. The downside is the battery doesn't charge from the oculus link cable but as the 2s lipo is a 5000mAh beast it lasts long enough! You only need the common 3 red and common 3 black wires from the existing battery harness, the others are for controlling the charge algorithm and the high battery temperature warning (neither of which I was bothered about).
It definitively kinda is. A very cool, very usable beta. But absolutely something that's bound to see big evolution before it stabilise and become only small quality update like video games in general, or TV, or smartphones. There's still whole new uses that should come. Like the integration of AR rather than just VR with passthrough camera and better analysis of environement. Or more complete body tracking. Or face tracking. Also, computing power we can fit in a standalone headset for now is just the minimum VR require to be interresting. Definitively room for improvement with better SOC.
You are smart Steve. I understand that there may not be parts available, but you will find one. You have taught me a lot and everything from PlayStation 4 to ps5. Thank you
This is the reason why the right to repair is a huge thing. We should be given the ability to repair anything we would like to ourselves versus the manufacturer.
I actually had other type of “drifting” issue with my oculus 1 controller, in VR it would just drift away while i hold it stationary. Good news is that the seller replaced it along with a headset.
sometimes like he said it can be from dirt and grime getting under the hood and messing up the sensors but i read it can also be due to that spring thing getting bent and messing with the sensors
I love that your skill and work show in the confidence you have when opening stuff up. Like, you can surmise so much by looking at cable placement and you open stuff like it's no big deal, and figure things out on the go. I love your channel for that.
you can easly cast the headset on your computer by the way you put 1080p withside quest and put better bitrate or you just record a video in the headset
Big companys just basically make all electonics to be like one-time use only because they just want to maximase money what they get them. They dont maybe thats why give any parts.
I had an original Oculus Rift and the cable, used to send HDMI output to my PC, stopped working after a couple years. Very common issue and I think, no big deal it's a cheap part. Oculus decided at that time no longer stock these replacement cables effectively turning my perfectly usable VR headset into a useless brick. Couldn't find a 3rd party replacement cable for it anywhere so Oculus just said "Buy a new headset". This was the last time I ever gave Oculus any of my money.
I tried the Oculus a few months ago and it was OK. The technology is just not quite their yet. Glad to see you fixing some different types of electronics! I did miss the perfect amount of thermal paste!!! Lol
Technology is definitely there and is amazing for what it is. Might just not be up to your expectations. VR is developing fast tho every single generation is taking leaps and bounds forwards. The Quest 2 is already miles better than first generation VR.
@@UltimateTechHub Yeah remember video games started with pong and now look at the games we have. I see VR as my generations Pong the start of a gaming evolution that will get better and better.
The most likely issue with the battery is that the seller didn't used it for quite a while, hence the battery voltage is now below the BMS's minimum threshold hence the 0 voltage. What you can do is check the voltage from battery pins directly without the BMS and see what the voltage is. If it's normal (i.e. around 3v) then it's faulty BMS, in which case there's nothing you can do. But if it's quite low, than you can jump start it directly (easiest with stripped positive and negative of any USB cable connected to a PC). You'll only need to charge it till the voltage reaches around 3v for the BMS to works, usually only takes 10 seconds. The battery backup won't be as good as before but it will definitely revive the battery.
Been playing video games for over 20 years and never heard any talk about stick drift until the switch. Now literally everyone thinks they have stick drift on every controller they use for some reason.
For the Quest 2, it's worth to check out the volume buttons - as with most Android devices, you enter the recovery menu by holding power and volume down - perhaps the volume down button is stuck?
You can share your view from within the Quest by Chromecasting to that TV behind you. In the settings there is a Mirror or Chromecast feature built in.
I'm curious why you didn't take the battery from the headset with the software problem and put it in the headset that only needed a battery. Seems that would probably have gotten it working.
It’s almost 2 years I’m watching your channel and Videos you’re the best one i see, Hope you getting more success and keep going I hope I could meet you one day 👍👍
Had the same boot menu problem with my first Quest 2, good thing I live in a country with great warranty and consumer rights, returned the headset and after 1 month I recived a new headset.
Yeah but can you buy any part you would need to fix it in your wonderful country. Warranties and returns are usually pretty easy to deal with over here but getting parts is the problem.
Glad I know there are compatible parts for my second hand headset. Not having access to spare parts is a nightmare and a terrible practice. It's one thing when Joe Cloggs can't get the parts, aside from donor parts, but it is something else when a repair service can't get their hands on said parts! That's literally their business in trouble because of companies ot playing nice.
If you fix more of these in the future you can screen share via wifi in the settings of the oculus, thats really the only way to get the content directly on the device. If your playing or using a PC app OBS will capture that with ease.
I’m wondering about that software bricked Oculus, could taking out the battery for a few days change anything? It would fully clear anything on ram and completely resets the device (from a hardware standpoint) anyway, this was a great video!
Are the batteries for the 2 Quests the same? Could the white one's battery be swapped into the black one to test, or are there differences? I wouldn't know though...just curious. :)
If you make further videos for quest devices and are really interested in sharing the screen, here is a way... You may share your screen live to your phone by enabling screenshare to a paired device through the Oculus app. Once you have it on your phone screen its possible to use other 3rd party apps to record the phone screen.
"Seller says controller drifts." Assuming my interpretation is correct.... Controller drift is an issue where the headset loses tracking with the controller. Can be a problem with the controller and/or the cameras on the headset. If a controller is impacted on a surface it can cause this issue. "Not due to the analog stick needing cleaning."

Quick tip for people that have electronics go bad out of warranty and live in California. They HAVE to supply parts for 7 years after purchasing electronics valued over 100.00(i think). If something like a battery isn't supplied like was the case here, they have to replace it entirely or even refund you the original amount paid. I've used this quite a few times to get things replaced, but generally I have to take it to the better business bureau to get them to comply. Either way, its a very useful tool for keeping your electronics that are designed to fail outside of warranty alive and well... Or replaced.
If you have a DCPS you can externally charge that battery to 3.7V(which is usually the nominal voltage of Li-Po batteryes) so you don't need to replace
Hey, Steve. That PS5 that was destroyed by TechRax can be used to convert a digital edition to a disc edition. I remember you tried to do it on another PS5 a while ago, but there wasn't software to drive it. But if you transplant certain chips on that donor board to a digital PS5, you can make the disc drive work. Some of the chips needed are syscon, SAMU, and sflash0. If you can identify all the necessary chips... You can for sure convert a digital edition to a disc edition. Also if that donor board is on low enough firmware, you can use it as a downgrade kit to make another PS5 exploitable. I would love to see you try this in a future video.
when batteries sit for a long time they can appear as having no voltage, usually applying a some voltage to around 3V or more/less can bring it back then charge at 4.2V until it's full
Again, this raises issues about repairing items YOU own not the company. Just as Louis Rossman has made videos recently about the Future MotionOnewheel and Zero Motorcycles. More and more companies seem to think they can drift so far away from right to repair that it becomes pointless buying products from them as they are infringing on YOUR right to repair YOUR stuff by claiming we are stupid and under "safety" concerns. Such companies should NOT get away with suing other companies from creating alternative solutions that do NOT infringe on Copyright of the original. More and more companies are folowing this trend and soon it will be a case of, instead of paying say, $20/£20 for a part, rather $500-1000/£500-£1000 for a new device instead. Companies need to realise that IF they release others to create their own third party parts and the companies producing the products mass produce replacement parts, they will end up with a larger customer base because you CAN repair your own stuff and they will get parts either from them direct OR third party. Either way, people would buy that product because it CAN be repaired easily. The right to repair also legitimises and protects companies if YOU do repair yourself in those time frames, after? it makes no difference. A wasteful society, lieing to itself, that allows companies to produce MORE items that are not recycled easily yet spouting we should recycle. 1930s to 1990s was far better for repair and therefore recycling as people could hold onto their stuff for longer and keep them working by repairing for themslves.
You could try to recharge the battery if you can find the right connector and a battery recharger for rc. You have to charge the battery in ni-cd mode at a slow rate to be able to give the battery some energy. Then with some energy on the battery, it should be able to charge normally. Maybe it will not work, maybe yes. I saved a battery or two with this method. Anyway nice video!
@@christophervanzetta in my case it worked… I discharged a battery to flat, because I forgot to unplug it and it has gone to zero. I was able to revive it. It was not like new, but at least (in the case of the video) maybe it could be used to try the device?
Here's three ways of getting the screen to a recordable mirrored source or file: - [ 1 ] - {preferred} First and what I think is the best way to show what the Quest 2 is doing, just install SideCraft, connect and follow the guided instructions. It has built in scrcpy and then you can easily over wifi or USB-C cable just stream it straight to the computer in a separate window where you can set everything from fov, resolution, fps, bitrate, etcetera.. (Edit: This solution you don't need to be connected through AIR link, just cable or same subnet on your wifi. Also the scrcpy will show "everything", as in guardian, passive seethrough etc. So it's really good for when instructing others what to do and what happens at certain situations) - [ 2 ] - Second alternative isto use built in oculus is to stream the content to a browser. Just click on share, select computer (when connected with your Quest 2 through AIR link wifi or cable) and then on your computer a browser window will pop-up and just log in (if you're not already logged into meta) and then you'll see the video feed in your browser where you easily can capture it with for example OBS studio. - [ 3 ] - Third option is to do a screen recording by just clicking on the far left side of the menu, record your video and save. Then grab it from computer or send it from the Quest 2 to your email or computer (depending on if you're connected to the Quest 2 using your phone or computer). If you enable MFP on the Quest 2 them all you have to do is to connect it using an USB-C cable and the drive should pop-up on your computer and go to captures and fetch the file. MFP can easily be enabled just by entering ADB commands. Just need to download ADB support to your computer first (works with Linux, windows and macosx). Good luck and thanks for your content! Really great stuff 👍
To show us what you see, You can stream via the oculus app on an iPhone. Not sure about android, but we are able to watch others playing games etc via the oculus app + casting
With the Quest 2, try removing the battery and leaving it out for a while. Although it's not boot looping, yours is going to that same menu that some bootloopers see.
Ive been waiting for this!! I joined your website and made a post but never got any replies soo hopefully this will help me a bit without messing to much up!
I bought a HTC Vive back when they were very new which was for parts. Turned out to be a broken HDMI cable, I could sell it with the spare one I had laying around. Sold it for £400 profit!
There is a way people sideload software updates to the Quest 2 (instructions are somewhere on Reddit, it requires ADB and drivers) . There are 2 types of updates - full and partial. If you manage to find the full update and sideload it maybe you'll be able to revive the headset.
Another concerning part is that it's not showing up on his computer... so hopfully not a built-in nand memory issue. Yeah the only to restore it is basically force it to be flashed is with ADB via USB.
You need ADB drivers for the computer to recognize it should be an easy fix. To show us what you see you can cast it to the tv or just record on the headset.
You can record video on the headset and transfer via cable, also there's Oculus link now that connects it to PC. There are probably new ways to record nowadays.
If you haven't already, you should do a video about fixing DS games. Have a copy of Pokemon platinum that will show what game it is, but when I start the game it gets a blue screen saying the same files couldn't be accessed, tried cleaning it multiple times and still no change
Ill make the conscious decision when buying electronics to only do so if they can be fixed. It's environmental responsibility. I guess I'll never own one of these. Thanks for the great teardown video. You are a master.
If I do remember correctly, there is actually a screen capture built into the Quest 2. It is found in the 'sharing' menu/tab (I had to look up that last part)

Great job! Are you a longtime user of BW-100, or is this a "paid promotion"?
what's the device that shows current drawn?
can u fix the antonov 225 😢😢
Not sure if you tried with the Quest with the software issue - but there are a set of ADB drivers you can install on your PC before connecting it which may help. It's often used for sideloading apps etc.
I think you could be able to update it through Oculus app as well?
People dunped quest 2 roms so it might be possible to install those it was used for updating the quest when updates came out but didnt update for some people
I've fixed a few using that method but it requires being able to get into the Sideload Update option on the recovery menu. From the sound of it, Steve's is just boot looping back to the recovery menu no matter what he presses. I have one like that as well, and can't sideload to it like the others. It might be possible to put it into sideload mode using external commands from a PC, but as far as I know Oculus security is going to prevent that. It seems to be a common issue on the Quest 2 with no solution as of yet - I'm going to hang on to mine until someone smarter than me figures it out, or I can use it for parts!
i miss ADB XD
@@fadetonoir6152 Hmm, is it possible to root and install custom recoveries on Oculus Quest? Might be possible to fix it that way. Although I think that requires getting into it too. I wonder if it would possible to apply the fix to a working Quest and then soldering it's storage into the non-working one.
Hi Steve - I've fixed a fair few Oculus headsets and have encountered these problems before:
For the original Quest, have you tried leaving it on charge for a while, like overnight or even 24 hours?
It's so frustrating and such a waste - we really need some right to repair laws to force them to fix things.
do you have a video on the bms?
And what if put the original BMS to another no name regular li-ion battery?

Im all for the RTR movement in regards to people being able to fix their own equipment 👍
Not to mention its useful for those who live remotely like myself. For all the hassle it would be to send an item to the manufacturer for repairs (who is most likely based in London in my case, some 400 miles away) it would be cheaper to just buy the same item brand new.

really a shame parts are not available, makes you think twice before getting one even if you get a warranty
It really is a shame
The only person who says "Alright cool" when there is no power ;) Nice to see inside a VR headset !!!
Lol
Hi! I usually try to connect 4v at 0.25a to the + and - of a battery to get it to around 3.3v. The device sometimes starts recognizing the battery again and charges it. The protection in the battery kicked in and sometimes can be persuaded to work again.
Yeah, try this. It's possible that it's simply so flat that it refuses to charge
In this case I assume that the Battery is so drained out that it Lost its capacity, since you don't know how long it was drained out.
Whatever, I'll try my best
Lithium-Ion Batteries have little to no self discharge in comparison to lead acid batteries, but they are more sensitive to deep discharges (which this one is, since its on 0,0V).

It’s actually disgusting that something as simple as a battery replacement isn’t allowed to happen because they just want you to buy another device.
Awesome job Steve! You should take the battery from the unit that powers on into the one with the bad battery and see if it will work.
Also, can u hook up a powersupply at the right settings to test it?
@@mhavock Agreed. All techs should have a variable bench power supply for testing IMO
They're completely different batteries and headsets, so unfortunately it likely wouldn't work.
Please do a collab with Cat & Andrew, we appreciate all your videos
That first battery is probably just disconnected by the protection IC. Kickstart it by conencting it to weak source with ~4V and low current.
I thought the same. Very common issue with cellphones too.
I wonder if you can replace the cell and use the same protection IC
@@FXV56 Depending on the type of protection circuit, replacing the cell might work perfectly or it might permanently disable the battery, although usually single-cell protection circuits belong to the first category.
@@EnricoConca What do you mean the first category?
@@FXV56 I mean that they usually work fine after replacement of the cell.
Hey, Tronics,
To be able to share/record what you see on the Quest, you have 2 relatively easy options:
I love the fact that you buy things just to see if you can fix it! Super inspiring for those that like to fix their things. Keep up the good work!
That’s an interesting idea! You could suggest this to the Oculus repair community?
It's worth fixing as it's still worth about £250 / $300
Easy for you, maybe. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of thing that is easy for him who works with hardware that will go right over your head.
hmm. The imo "messy" component layout and loads of glue in the headset give me 1st Gen vibes ^^
Nice to see the guts of this thing.
Wow I am so glad to read this!. Thank you! Now I can go and fix my Quest1!
Seeing these teardowns makes me feel VR is still in beta and people are paying the early adopters risks
Why is that? If you are talking about ease of dissembling and repairing, VR devices are not meant to be taken apart and repaired.
Always interesting to see inside of other controllers
Yes, these were interesting. I've never taken these apart before. The LED ribbons made it more difficult to get apart but mostly fun still.
Lol

fix the quest one with a new larger batterypack, extend the wires to the back of the head and have a rear mounted battery.. franken-quest
did you switch the battery on the oculus quest 2 to the oculus quest 1 to see if it will now work
The most likely issue with the battery is that the seller didn't used it for quite a while, hence the battery voltage is now below the BMS's minimum threshold hence the 0 voltage.
Nice I did not know those had a large cpu and cooling solution inside

As much you clean the sensor, it also degrades overtime. The stick drift issues was only caused by companies who made cheap thumbsticks.
So why does the $200 Xbox Elite controller with the best Alps controller suffer from it then?
@@unitedfools3493 I am not so sure why that happened.
It's easy to find 3,85v batteries, not necessarily for Oculus but they're out there.

Have a blessed day!
not sure if it has been shared already, but to share what you are seeing in the headset, you can use the oculus app to cast your screen to your phone, or possibly to a tv or webpage - and then you can record that image
I never knew that and I have been here 5 years thank you.
If you have a DCPS you can externally charge that battery to 3.7V(which is usually the nominal voltage of Li-Po batteryes) so you don't need to replace
You can view what’s on the quest’s screen on your phone with the oculus app. Hope this helps
We want more Quest 2 videos. Good job mate :)
You can also cast the Oculus to a Chromecast plugged into your TV! Great video!
when batteries sit for a long time they can appear as having no voltage, usually applying a some voltage to around 3V or more/less can bring it back then charge at 4.2V until it's full
Can't wait to see some SteamDeck fixes
As soon as I can find some broken SteamDecks!
@tronicsfix if you connect the quest to a pc and load up steam, there is a setting to mirror what you are seeing onto the TV.
Always fun when you upload!
Thanks for watching!
If they were ni-cad or lead acid. Li-po batteries are toast once they are deep discharged
@@christophervanzetta in my case it worked…
I discharged a battery to flat, because I forgot to unplug it and it has gone to zero.
I was able to revive it.
It was not like new, but at least (in the case of the video) maybe it could be used to try the device?
Here's three ways of getting the screen to a recordable mirrored source or file:
- [ 1 ] - {preferred}
First and what I think is the best way to show what the Quest 2 is doing, just install SideCraft, connect and follow the guided instructions.
So it's really good for when instructing others what to do and what happens at certain situations)
- [ 2 ] -
Second alternative isto use built in oculus is to stream the content to a browser. Just click on share, select computer (when connected with your Quest 2 through AIR link wifi or cable) and then on your computer a browser window will pop-up and just log in (if you're not already logged into meta) and then you'll see the video feed in your browser where you easily can capture it with for example OBS studio.
- [ 3 ] -
Third option is to do a screen recording by just clicking on the far left side of the menu, record your video and save.
Not sure about android, but we are able to watch others playing games etc via the oculus app + casting
you can tell he hasnt been in vr when he said "the controller drifts, so lets clean the analog stick" XD
ITS awesome that you Go Out there and repair stuff for the First time for new content but i Love to See you fixing Game consoles😅 pls more consoles
With the Quest 2, try removing the battery and leaving it out for a while. Although it's not boot looping, yours is going to that same menu that some bootloopers see.
To view the quest 2 on the screen, you need to cast it to a Chromecast device or TV. Love your
videos
Ive been waiting for this!! I joined your website and made a post but never got any replies soo hopefully this will help me a bit without messing to much up!
You can use the quest app to mirror to a smart tv or smart phone. You can also use a google Chromecast as well to mirror the video
I bought a HTC Vive back when they were very new which was for parts. Turned out to be a broken HDMI cable, I could sell it with the spare one I had laying around. Sold it for £400 profit!
Tip for sharing screen from Quest - get a chrome cast and you can directly stream to it from quest.
Yeah the only to restore it is basically force it to be flashed is with ADB via USB.
use sidequest to show your screen, you need to put your headset in developer mode for it to work and to sideload if wanted
I would carefully piece apart the battery and rebuild it. Those battery packs probably have multiple cells and a BMS. You can buy the cells.
Would love you to try to take the battery from the "can't update" one and put it in the one with dead battery
The entire thing seems like its not going to last
If I do remember correctly, there is actually a screen capture built into the Quest 2. It is found in the 'sharing' menu/tab (I had to look up that last part)
Had a oculus quest controller apart yesterday because of drift, you can use a smartphone camera to check that all of the ir leds are working.
steve the usb c port is usb out you have to get the software from oculus and plugging into the port on it that has the software could fix it
