Most R50 users AREN'T using an external monitor. 🤦🏻♂️
they use mics
@@Anyrhing77vertically at best....
I'm actually kind of glad that the HDMI/USB are on the side of the grip. It means they aren't in the way when using it as a vlog-style camera with the screen flipped out to the side.
True!
Definitely prefer the built in LCD to external monitor anyway... Best feature is the way that comes out.
I love my R50 and yes, I use an external monitor. SmallRig now sells an R50 cage. With a mini-rig and and a 90 degree micro HDMI cable, I have found it to be comfortable to use. Having dual pixel autofocus in 4k without additional crop makes the R50 a pretty nifty camera.
Can you tell me if the built in mic is good or do I need to buy an add on
@@MotherShip404it is fine but sometimes I can hear the lens focusing, I use the Rode wireless mics or a shotgun.
What about the shoot at night? I’m a sony zv e10 user but thinking to change it to R50
@@denniseazura9488if you use zve-10, you have 3 log profile and can use light from Godox. R50 is downgrade, because you can't do the same with r 50, but log profile you haven't even with R10. Only with r7. Exactly upgrade from zve-10 will be only Canon r7 with digic 10 and 32 mp matrix and stab inside camera and canon log.
The reason for why the Third Party Batteries won't charge is most likely the same reason the Battery Life isn't shown for those Batteries. Third Party Batteries are not encoded thus the camera does not know how full the battery is and the camera just thinks that it is powered using a dummy battery. If the camera doesn't know how full the battery is or thinks it is being powered by a dummy battery than why try charging that battery. Hope you understand what my point is.
Great video! I've been pleased with the R50 so far video wise, but am mainly shooting in 1080p 60fps. Great points regarding the hotshoe and aftermarket battery charging issues through USB.
Does the Camera stop automatically after 1 hour of 1080p 60 fps recording?
I'll go ahead and mention this to you, too. I have the SmallRig cage. They didn't build it to allow the power cable from a dummy battery to clear. I was going to hook a dummy battery up to a power bank so I wouldn't have to run off the small batteries and change them multiple times.
@@factisimoyes
Many like Kent Rockwell have said this Canon R50 performs at the same high level as his full frame cameras, and without all the unnecessary fluff buttons. And he's right, the photos and 4k video are among the elite. This camera has it all, amazing low light performance and tack sharp image quality. If you're an expert or even an intermediate photographer, you will be able to produce highly professional results with the R50.
I shot real estate for over a year with just the M50 and Laowa 9mm f/2.8 ef-m lens, and low and behold with professional results that landed me more and more clients every week.
I recently have moved on to this Canon R50 and the Nisi 9mm f/2.8 RF lens. A solid upgrade! And the results will be far better than what I already had. If you're smart and driven, you can deliver amazing professional photos and videos with "less". 😎
It's the novice who way overspent on full frame this and that, who have to overspend because of their shortcomings as a photographer, rather than putting the effort into to actually learning how to get the very best out of their camera and lens. I see a lot of foolish people with buyers remorse who spew their venom talking about shortcomings of the R50, when it's their shortcomings as a photographer. The wise know better. 😏📷
Let's give a hewlett Packard camera and see if you think that
I think they change the connection side because so many people complained that cables would block the screen when flipped out.
Very informative video for Canon users :) Happy to share!
Thanks for the heads up! Not ocf without an adapter is truly a problem 😝
Except the overheating, can you use the camera while it s connected to power? Like, when using it as a webcam, can i have it connected permanently to a source of power? Does it affects the camera in a way or another?
Regards the battery charging issue. My EOS R, R7, and now R6mkII will charge 3rd party e6-NH just fine. But many inexpensive 3rd party batteries are just normal E6 batteries. You can not charge those in-camera even if they are Canon brand. Batteries have to be E6-N or E6-NH to charge in-camera.
I am not a biginner and i buy r50 (third body)for pfotography because of size and weight. It works perfect. Camera have all quality of apsc even for pro.. but not for some amateur who want to look like pro.
should’ve bought m50
@@sonicsupersam7793m50 is brilliant camera. Unfortunately the electronic shutter in it does work ONLY in auto mode, which is a serious downgrade for professionals
would you recommend this for streaming cam... like 4-6 hrs... 5 days a week?
Question: let’s say I use the micro HDMI to record the video footage on an exterior capture card……. Will the camera overheat, or it only overheats when it’s actively recording into the camera SD card.
Great stuff, thanks. Especially was looking for real world on the overheating claims... and 1 hour limit/shutdown, restart...
Great video! Subbed :) I was looking at the SL3, then I noticed this R50 - 1. do you think the R50 is good for beginner real estate? 2. what lens do you recommend adding for wide angle? Cheers!
Awesome, thanks for sharing
is the overall width of the hotshoe still the same. Like will audio receivers still slide in the top?
Subscribed and liked as requested ! :)
Thanks for your work on it 🎉
Does that mean the hotshoe won’t work with Speed lite 430EX III-RT?
Hello, thank you for the video. Is this camera good for printing images ? I only need a camera to take good quality pictures of my drawings/paintings in order to do A3 or A3 prints.
My first issue with the camera out the box when inserting the battery I noticed the flash was at the holding and focusing points other than that I don't have any issue as u say
Can’t you use an adapter that supports AF to mount Sigma lenses, EF lenses? Aren’t there 3rd party EF lenses with AF?
Ive never heard of cameras over heating until i started looking for a new one this is scary for me tbh but i hope it wont be a problem when i get mine’s tomorrow
My biggest problem is:
When I use an adapter for lens, I cant us the build in flash, 'cause the lens too long, and make a big shadow.
and the second: When I use an adapter for lens, and use en adapter for flash, the camera will be very forward-heavy, and its very uncomfortable to grip it.
I search a good frame, or sthg, but I cant find it
Does this have clean hdmi out?
The lack of a wide angle lens (wide to at least 20mm 35mm equiv.) makes it nonstarter for me for vlogging. If Canon will come out with a RF-S 10-18mm for it would fix this.
So wait q second: this means I wouldn’t be able to use my Godox V1-C on this camera or my R6 Mark IIs?!
How is the battery backup? How many shots in a single charge
Dude I love your content and passion keep it flowing. You’re also really cute and handsome hehe 😉 Do you offer any photography classes I’ve been wanting to dive more into it and create my own RUclips channel as well. You’re an inspiration! Thanks
I wish this camera has a slightly better battery like the SL3 and has the EF-S mount 😢, I don't like it because you only have limited lenses for this camera. Is there a recommend subtitle for this camera with EF-S mount?
Hmm . . HDMI etc sockets interfere with the grip OR other side interfere with the screen out and reversed. ??
Overheating is a major topic reviewers MUST cover. I regret buying sony a5100 as my FIRST camera then realizing it wont shoot for more than 20 mins.
It doesn't change my mind about getting this for my hobby use. As a sound guy I work along side loads of camera personal but if I was a pro camera operator who wanted a budget b camera for additional angles this would be a deal breaker for me, since its not a workhorse.
I just added thermal pads inside of mine. I got the full 1 hour at 4k 24gps with only 3 bars on the heat gauge in a 72-74 deg f room. Battery died before I could run it longer. Gonna do more tests tomorrow. I just did this mod today
@@dbuckfanplays7991 can you run the camera on powerbank? Did you not void your warranty?
@@prathamshenoy9840 I'm sure it's possible but no sticker on void warranty was removed or damaged. Yes there are power banks that can be used. Anyone with a PD rating I believe
Question: I was outdoors in direct sunlight, but I was not shooting video - primarily photos. I am using a 70 - 200 mm lens for sports photography. I never once shot any video, and it overheated. What are your thoughts on this? I've never experienced it. And again, I was in direct sunlight. Thanks in advance.
Yeah, depends onwhat you're doing. I think camera on, HIGH LIGHTS for better LCD contrast on your screen. Having the shutter constantly trying to focus something.... Makes senses it heats. Try not to use the LCD screen (armor mode) and I think it may solve your problem or having the SCREEN to turn off after a couple of seconds instead of always on
@@ronaldtejada8846 Thank you. I will keep those tips in mind. 😀
On that HDMI port location: what's crazy is that the Canon R8 (the camera I use) isn't much bigger than the R50, yet it does not have the HDMI port on the grip side, rather the side opposite of the grip. Contrarily, it makes using the side ports harder if flipping out the built-in screen to use while vlogging. I haven't yet used my R8 for vlogging, but it is something I want to try.
Obviously the R8 is a higher-end camera relative to the R50, but still.
Is the overheating still an issue?
The thing about doing a video with this camera is that most times when using a monitor and the HDMI cable is connected on the grip side, the mount should be used either to hold the camera to for a tripod. also, with the monitor use, sound is connected which makes for more connections to get in the way of holding the camera. Third party lenses are now being allowed to make lens mounts for the R camera bodies. Yes AF is allowed but IS is not yet available.
Hi, I am a newbie.. can you help me so to choose which lens I should buy? I want to buy the Canon R50, but I don't know which lens I should buy. I need to do manly photos to my family.. so for example to a person (bokeh effect) or to group of persons. Which one of these lens you recommend to me?
1) CANON RF-S 55-210MM F5-7.1 IS STM
2) Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM
3) CANON RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM
4) Canon RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
Would the r50 but an upgrade over the t7i?
will viltrox or sigma make 33mm 1.4 lens for r50?
So, when you bought it, you did, or did not know the HDMI port was on the right side?
Surely using an adapter will fix the third-party lens issue?
You can buy a mounting ring that allows you to use canon’s DSLR automatic focus lenses.
Yea, that HDMI port issue is pretty weird. But, for me, I would most likely use the R50 as a travel / vlog / or RUclips camera. Which the flip out screen would be fine for the most part. I still keep my eyes on Canon cameras because they provide great skin tones. But, the fact that Canon only allows 3rd party manual focus lenses, is still a problem for me. More people would use Canon, I believe, if they had more 3rd party lens support with AF.
Informed video
Does it support HSS high speed sync speed lite
I use mine indoors for work recording small chunk clips and it overheats.... Apparently you have to buy thermal pads and fix it yourself...
Do you think overheating would be a problem running the R50 for hours at a time as a webcam?
Most of the heat in cameras comes from encoding while it writes to the SD card, so probably not an issue as a webcam, but I don’t own one so I can’t say for certain.
you can use adapter with auto focus with 3rd party lenses
MK2 coming out later?
@FoxTailWhipz i want to buy this camera not for vlogging but for recording family parties, nephew sports events stuff like that would you still recommend this?
Only good for parties, but not for professional use since less 3rd party lens available, at low price.
Please make comparison video of Z30 vs R50 , which one you suggest to buy?
did you manage to solve the problem of CR3 files not working in photoshop or lightroom?
They could put it on the top instead of useless garbage flash
The after market battery issue is not even an issue it's a good thing.. because there are many after market batteries which damages the camera so I think it's a plus point
This seem like a solid option for the price, i like the evf and the colors, it’s a shame the flash and third party lenses stuff :/ Also the kit lens seems very bad, 18-45 doesn’t seem like a good range and f6.3 it’s crazy dark 0_o
But I guess if u adapt some og canon l lenses with a speed booster you’ll get quite a good set up.
I went with the Sony zv e10 tho and I’m petty happy with it :p
Yeah i plan on buying an Adapter that will allow me to toss on some ef & efs lenses
does the zv e10 not having a viewfinder a dealbreaker for u? cause I'm honestly torn between getting the r50 or the zv e10 but I'm leaning towards the r50 bc of to me a viewfinder helps me capture images/video better
@@musicloevr I have the same problem right now, deciding between those cameras. If the zve 10 just had viewfinder, that will be my choice.
@@3komodo exactly :”)
Sony zv e10 or canon r50?
Needing an adapter to use a regular hotshoe is kind of mad. Seems like the Canon cripple hammer got plenty of use on this camera.
Definitely, but I’m really glad they didn’t limit the software and video capabilities as much!
@@FoxTailWhipz but they did. Zebras for hdr PQ are a hassle and so is white balance
For batteries, try Neewer LP-E6NH replacements. Canon R cameras identify them as genuine and will charge them using USB C PD.
The R50 uses LP-E17, which doesn’t have fully decoded 3rd party variant available. Only Patona has fully working version, but that has been sold out for months now :(
@@KoenKooi Ah, ok, makes sense.
Can you film video and charge at the same time with this camera? Eliminating the need for a dummy battery?
just bought a brand new canon r50, am I wrong that it's impossible to set manually time, aperture and ISO even if we are in full MANUAL mode? Just after hit REC button, all settings are gone, (I set my shutter speed, aperture and ISO to fixed values - no AUTO) and the camera is setting all of those by itself... very strange, so manual mode should give me chance to set up all those settings by myself... can you please confirm or if Im wrong maybe give me some advice?
ok, I found it, in 'movie mode' I need to click movie icon (upper left corner) then a list appears, and I can switch to movie manual mode. In case of anybody will be confused like me 🙂btw thanks a lot for your video, cheers
Solution...smallrig accessories...side or top handles cage and coil hdmi cables or adapter.
R50 or zv e10 for filming video? Specifically for filming fishing videos, outdoors in sunny and extremely overcast conditions, looking to get high-quality b-roll and second angle from my gopro
That’s a really tough choice! I haven’t used the ZV-E10 personally, but they seem so close in specs that I’d think about which lens system you could see yourself sticking with if you eventually upgrade. You definitely can’t go wrong with either!
@FoxTailWhipz I see, a pretty equal shoot out, i figure I'll probably pick the Sony up then just because it seems to have more lenses that are usable with it. Thanks for clarifying for me!
I prefer the grip on the Canon camera if you're planning any handheld footage and I like an electronic viewfinder, but video quality on Sony is brilliant.
Sony zv e10 or canon r50 for first camera?
@Dany Pro Max i ended up getting the zv-e10 because it has a wider range of compatible lenses and overall similar image quality. Overall can't go wrong either way.
Most “content creators” aren’t gonna use an external monitor when they have a flip screen 🤷🏼♂️
Is the a6000 a better option for the third party lense and the cheapo price?
I think in every way besides price, the R50 beats the a6000. But if price is someone’s main limitation, the a6000 is great for photography, decent for video, and has basically an unlimited amount of lenses to choose from!
Thanks for mentioning the flash shoe.
Beginners will either think the camera or flash are defective and being retuning them…
I find it crazy that Canon barely even mentions it! Especially since this camera is targeted towards first time mirrorless buyers, they won’t know until it’s too late.
@@FoxTailWhipz most will use the built in flash. I like bounce head flashes. That’s how I found out NONE of my Canon flashes worked anymore!
for the every day average joe that likes to take pics and a few video's the "little" canon is very cool.....good points tho, maybe you should trade it for the R10!
I'll do my best from my preferences. Fact by fact first fact you should always hold from mount instead of Camera it's self. You should not pick up Camera from plug in as your showing at 2:17. Especially if your recording your self
deal breaker: not having a usable hot shoe right out of the box.
i went for the R100. same picture quality, same kit lens, and a functioning hot shoe to use with my SpeedLite 270ex.
(the entire reason i bought it was to use a flash. and if I need an adapter, then no bueno)
EDIT: where did you get that tripoid? i need it.
Wait are you saying I can't use the sigma 18-35 f1.8 with this camera?? That would be so weird
You can use the 18-35 with the EF-RF adapter.
I purchased an r50 3 months ago and biggest problem for me is static noise on videos i record. Tried all manner of settings. Took of auto sound and adjusted. Cannot get rid of static noise. I am new to using a camera. Tried external mic still the same. Contacted canon and no help.
I saw a video that said the static noise was a 'grounding issue'. Basically, Something isn't grounded off properly. They didn't reveal if they fixed it unfortunately.
if your not fused about these issues than theres nothing to worry about which Im not. thanks for the info though.
Nice review! That is dumb that the cord is on the grip side tho😒
Thanks! Yeah it really is…
As a beginners camera frankly 99% of buyers won’t use an external monitor
If you are just getting into content creation I doubt you will think about an external monitor. When I first got into photography I didn’t know anything about brackets and ttl cords.
Flash photography is the most important thing for beginners
Would you recommend this or the Sony a6600
I want to know the sams thing
Better than a s24 ultra? And in what way?
The R50 is a starter camera. Which means you most likely don’t have a lot of accessories so if you want a external flash buy the EL-5 or the newly announced EL10
I think they assume since the camera is small anyway and alot people (especially with big hands) have complaints about their entire hand not fitting on the grip that most people who mount additional hardware to the camera body would most likely be using some sort of tripod mount grip or something for better stability holding the camera, since the grip is small and not very good for people with big hands. So maybe thats why they designed that part so stupidly lol
Also because its marketed toward beginners who probably don't have and wont invest thousands of dollars in 3rd party flashes lenses and everything else a pro photographer would need. Than it doesn't really hurt the consumer to make the components propitiatory.
As someone who has no camera gear myself and are just looking for a good video camera on a budget none of these issues are a deal breaker for me especially since I only want something slightly nicer than a powershot for when i go hiking to take pictured of the woods n stuff. However If I already had all different accessories and needed to work long hours recording I def wouldn't get this and get maybe something more high end and more compatible with industry standard equipment.
This video was very helpful and informed me about the different types of intentions certain cameras are designed for, thank you.
I want to buy a lens for my r50
Should I go for RF 35mm f1.8 or the 50mm f1.8?
50mm
Just use an adapter, you can use your old ef lenses. No issues.
Thank you for the video.
I have been a Canon user for decades and have shot analog with Canon and EF lenses, later digital and most recently I had my beloved Eos 6D and M50 as a replacement. Slowly I wanted to switch to a new camera and the more I inform myself, the more I realize that I can no longer use 90% of my lenses (including 24-70, 70-200 from Tamron) as well as my flashes or studio adapters....
So either buy everything new or stick with the old cameras. Thank you Canon !
You can use ANY lenses that are EF or EF-S mount with these cameras (including 3rd party lenses), if you use the EF to RF adaptor.
He is talking about RF mount 3rd party lenses specifically. And as of April 2024, 3rd parties are now allowed to make RF lenses, (for APS-C so far anyway).
Sigma have a few on the way, and Tamron has at least one coming.
You can use 3rd party flashes with the new hotshoe just fine to, specifically Godox anyway, which may just require a firmware update of the flash or transmitter.
@@beerbaron3003 I have a lot of old equipment. For example 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 G1. Both great lenses and more than sufficient for my purposes, but as far as I've read in various forums, they don't work even with an adapter.
There are also many older flashes (especially with an old hot shoe) and they work perfectly, but even there I need an adapter which makes everything "bulky".
So as far as I can see at the moment, I would have to replace a lot of lenses, flashes etc. (which I have bought over decades) if I switched, which on the one hand as a hobby photographer would blow my budget and on the other hand would be anything but necessary because they work and deliver great photos.
You should tell people that Canon claims that the camera supports UVC/UAC, which means that it can be used as a web camera via a USB-C connection. BUT... it turns out that the USB connection doesn't transmit audio - just video. (In other words, it doesn't really support UAC.)
It's bad enough that the camera simply doesn't do something that the literature claimes it does. When I contacted them, they weren't interested in clearning up their documentation to reflect the truth.
Does that mean any video you take with the r50 won’t save video if you transfer it from camera??
FoxTailWhipz, Stupid question, from 4m45 why does it show the Canon R10 when you’re talking about the R50?
I just bought it 😍
Every Canon camera I have owned (60D, 70D, & now 80D) has useable ports on the left side of the camera. Why Canon decided to mix things up and move it to the right side is ridiculous!
Third party batteries doesn't have the built-in chip. So potentially less safe.
So what you are saying with Canon's new hot shoe, we cannot use external monitors or microphones without spending ANOTHER $40-$50 on their new hot shoe attachment??? 😠
To your viewers. If the USB charger doesn't work with a third-party battery, it's because the circuitry and engineering design of the inner workings of that third-party battery does not work with the Canon USB charger. THAT A WARNING FOLKS. Check it out if you don't believe me. There have been many YT videos that have shown a plethora of problems with third party batteries. There's a reason why they are cheaper and it's because of the short-cuts to "safety" and "performance" that allow third party batteries to be cheaper are risks you don't want to take with your expensive camera. Do NOT cheap out on your batteries. Bite the bullet and purchase authentic Canon batteries which are designed specifically to work with your camera and NOT to do any damage - like some of these third-part batteries have been known to do. (This is coming from someone who is on a budget and always looks for deals, but third-party batteries are not one of those items you want to fool around with. Trust me.)
mate youre Sony user))) you main A7siii ad ZV-e10 so why youre saying like that is your main camera somehow?
Sony zv e10 vs canon r50?? Which one better??
In my opinion, if you will mostly use it for photos the R50 is the best option. Built in flash, EVF, faster burst rate. If you mostly record video, you really can’t go wrong either way. I would mostly consider which lens system you would rather get into.
6:00 how do you record 120 fps in this camera? I can’t find the option
It’s in the first page of the video settings menu called “High Frame Rate” 😀
@@FoxTailWhipz thank you! You saved me 🙏
Also, very small grip, very few buttons and dials (exactly as M50; but Canon's great touchscreen interface makes up for that partially). And atrocious photo buffer.
All in all, pro's that want a tiny Canon camera to use (and that won't get an RP or R8 for that purpose) will get the R10, simply the cheapest Canon that is great at usability (joystick at that price point is a killer feature).
However, comparing with how junk the 2000D and 4000D are (don't ask me how T8i or Tsi etc. b.s. naming scheme for the US they were called...) and with the earlier low-tier M models, there is still room in the Canon APS-C RF range for entry-level: a camera with a fixed screen and/or, no viewfinder, low build quality, (worse sensor?) and lower price.
I think the R10 is great as a second body, while the R50 is great for first time mirrorless owners! I would honestly be surprised to see a lower priced R mount camera. I’ll be pumped if it does happen though!
@@FoxTailWhipzr100 it's awful with not sensory screen... But it's R series.
Thanks 👍 I am canon M50 user and you just showed me not to buy r50.
I’m glad it helped!
Me too
Dude this is an ENTRY LEVEL camera. Nobody is hooking up an external monitor to it.
You should try using these cameras when you’re left handed.
u know what. I think a camera manufacturers should just put all of the ports on the top on both sides of the hot shoe mount.
Yeah, canon has talent in small things that can annoy you. Im convinced canon really doesn't wanna release a mid range camera without any issues. The hot mount shoe thing is just frustrating considering you were using a 800d or 77d and you're looking to up your video footage while still using flash accessories for photography.
I'll just get the M50
You aren't going to "snap the cable". Get over it like an adult.
