Thank you Jason! Super helpful. I got the R50 and I only have the kit lens, which other lens would you recommend? Mostly for traveling (landscape, portraits, animals), 50mm?
I would grab the RF-S 55-210mm geni.us/PbfjL0S to compliment your RF-S 18-55mm lens for the most range and most affordable option. The 55-210mm appears to only be available as a kit lens option though at the time of writing this unfortunately... For the best all-in-one lens option you can get the RF-S 18-150mm lens: geni.us/5pxFjX and then you won't really need the 18-45mm lens anymore... 150mm is a lot of reach... I compared the 18-45mm vs the 18-150mm lens here: ruclips.net/video/BV6Xf_EVBS4/видео.html You could also consider some full frame RF lenses, but they are larger and more expensive for the most part... The RF 24-240mm geni.us/QqwaXAB in particular looks to be a great all-in-one lens option for the money, but it's $899 US... For portraits in particular, the RF 50mm f/1.8 lens: geni.us/U8903L would be an excellent option and it's very affordable... I hope that helps and thank you for the kind words about the video :) Jay
I’ve been jumping from one video to another after buying the R50 as my first legitimate camera. A lot of the other videos assumed a base line understanding I didn’t have. This guide is great.
I absolutely love this in depth explanation. You explain every single detail and not just assume that everyone knows the basics right away and jump straight to the specs. THIS is a beginners guide👍
LOVE THIS IN-DEPTH GUIDE!! I will be having my R50 as my first ever camera and this video will somehow help me how to navigate the controls without being overwhelmed. I hope there's a part 2 where all functions will be demonstrated via taking photos or videos outside.
Kia Ora Jason, just picked up an R50 and this guide is a winner. You've saved me (and everyone else here) a bunch of time. Cheers mate, appreciate your efforts!
As someone who films long videos for RUclips, I appreciate so much the amount of details and the pace you go about showing everything about this camera! I wish I had seen one of these for the first camera I’ve had, would’ve made the learning experience much easier! Thank you!!
I have just purchased this camera for my fishing channel. This video is the best guide on RUclips by a million miles. Thanks for making it and going through it slowly and with detail. Just what was needed to further understand the camera world
I’ve owned a polaroid camera since I was 10. I’m 18 and just got a real camera!! I have NO idea what i’m doing or what anything means. This video is understandable, simple, and the exact video most of us needed. Thank you sir!!
You're a legend, sir! I've just received the exact package of your content. You've made me love my new camera! It's my very first camera in life, and I know nothing about filming or photography - you've inspired me. Keep it up, man!
Just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!! I just brought this camera, and have looked at a bunch of different tutorials, but yours is the one I actually watched. I found it engaging, comprehensive, and very informative. I’m now able to enjoy my camera. Thanks!!
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH, Couldnt figure it out without you really, all those little things are very important to know and I was quite lost before I saw your tutorial. I got annoyed that every time i clicked on the screen it was taking a picture and you showed how to turn that on and off. I'm only at 20 minutes and have gotten so much information out of this. You are the absolute best. Thank you!
Hey, dude! I just got mine today and I’m mega thankful for your instructional video. It’s my very 1st camera ever so the whole process of choosing one was daunting for me to say the least and this guide takes so much weight off of my chest for the learning curve I’m about to undergo. Thank you so much for making this!!
just wanna say man you do a very good job explaining yourself, the camera, and how it all works im glad you posted this because this is an amazing tutorial thank you so much
Thank you for this well done tutorial. I’m a Nikon fan but my son just bought a Cannon R50 and I wanted to learn about this camera so I can help him set up and learn about his camera. This camera has some really nice features! Seems like a terrific starter camera.
My wife got me this camera for my birthday and your video was totally a game changer for me. It allowed me to fully enjoy it, amazing video super extensive. Thank you for sharing this out with the world!
you don't know how much I appreciate this video and the simple way you're traching us! I'm getting mine in a few days and I literally don't know anything about cameras (this will be my first!). Thank you so much for being so clear and slow! Have a good one, sending love form Italy 🫶🏻
Thanks Jason for this tutorial on the R50, I got mine a day ago and I’ve learned quite a few things from watching your video very informative and straight forward, you take your time in explaining things.thank you again
I bought my camera during Black Friday. Specifically I chose the 2 lens kit. I haven’t went and experimented with the camera I’ve been putting that off for about month. I picked up the canon r50 because I watch great reviews on RUclips and before I stumbled onto the r50 I thought about buying the canon m50 mkii. Anywho I wanted to pick up another hobby and photography stood out to me, however I don’t know nothing about photography or these fancy words you guys are using. But my 2024 New Year’s resolution was to take great photos and videos and their was no better way to start but to start here with your excellent explanation on this powerful and incredibly compact camera. I’m taking notes , pausing and rewinding and taking it all in. Want to know all about there is about photography. Just wanted to say thank you , thanks for your explanation. Hope to see another in depth explanation on future canon cameras.
Thanks Roger for the very kind words and sharing your story :) I have another video tutorial using the R10, which is nearly identical to the R50, and that will teach you more in depth about camera modes and photography concepts in general: ruclips.net/video/V2atwxYzPBA/видео.html All the best, Jay
Great video, thank you. I returned the r100 and upgraded to this camera (I love it so much more), and your instructional video was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you from a n00b. I appreciate your time putting this together and posting
Thank you!! This video is incredible!!! Just like you said as a total newbie and beginner user I felt a little frustrated trying to figure it on my own, but after watching this very thorough and helpful video I can’t wait to get back out there. Looking forward to watching this again as well as your others! Thank you!!!
Thank you for this video, just got mine and additionally bought the 50 mm you recommended for portraits. Now to watch the video as I set up the camera.
New to photography, absolutely phenomenal video. Thanks for taking the time to make something like this and moreover thinking from the POV of someone learning this for the firs time. Thank you Jason!
Whenever, I get a new camera, I can always count on you to teach me everything I need to know about how to use it. I just wanted to let you know that I am very grateful for all of those lessons. Thank you, Jason; and you're an excellent instructor.
Great video and in depth explanation of its different modes and features! I appreciate it and look forward to growing in this hobby and catching up with your other content! Thank you kindly!
I'm planning to buy my first camera (Canon R50) in future and this help me a lot as a beginner to get familiar with the settings and other modes, Thanks man 👏🏻
Got my first camera a couple of days ago. This is awesome content, thank you. I will need to come back to it a couple of times I think! Going to get out in the next couple of days and play around with my new camera 😊
Thank you so much! Very helpful. I have the 6D Mark ii but got this one mainly for video (and travel) since it’s so much smaller. Makes life much easier and still more options than I need. Already in love with it! Again, this was very helpful. Thanks!
Hi! I have a t5i thats SD card slot just broke (spring?) so I was all ready to get a 6d mark ii since everything always said to buy full frame but now I’m considering this, what would you do? I do all kinds of photography including portrait. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for this tutorial..i really appreciate the way you explained everything in a simple manner..operating this cam is now much easier for me..😃
This is excellent man, thank you!! I shoot with a Rebel T6 and I use my Motorola phone for videography because it has a amazing camera setup but I am starting to take videography a lot more serious, started a RUclips channel for music concerts and heavy Athletic competitions for Scottish and Celtic festivals all over the Northeast USA and I did A LOT of research before deciding to get the R50. It's amazing what it can do not to mention uncropped 4k video for 60 min at a time! The amount of options they give you for the photography as well is astounding! I probably won't use the T6 as much anymore lol. I love how it has the 25.2 mp sensor as well! I really think it's crazy that it's labeled as a beginner/entry level camera because to be honest it's not. It's more of a ultra compact intermediate level TRAVEL camera.
On our way to Europe in the next few months and had to have a great camera to brush up on my photography skills. Your beginner's guide didn't disappoint! Your instructions were so awesome I actually watched this three times. This was so helpful to get up and running! I have both lenses (purchased separately). Do you think it is a good option for travel to stay on the "P" setting (using all the settings in your tutorial) along with the RF-S 55-210mm lens along for the ride? I am sure most of my photos will be landscape - but I will have my 18-55mm lens along for when we want some closer pictures. At least that is my beginner's plan!
Wish I'd watched this before I bought the camera. The guy in the camera store advised me to buy the EF 75-300 lens for which you need the lens adaptor. Think he saw me coming? The 55-220 would have been a better option from what you're saying. Great video for a camera dummy like me. Thanks!
I just got the R50 and the Nisi 9mm f/2.8 RF lens. Absolutely amazing combo for shooting real estate! A huge upgrade from the Canon M50 and Laowa 9mm f/2.8 ef-m lens. Can you do a comparison between 3 hdr bracketed vs full auto mode assist photos? I'm imagining closer results than expected. Blended hdr photos are tough to beat but this will make for an interesting test.
I just had to come back and say once again this camera is the BEST FOR BEGINNERS… so easy to use and download the canon connect and you can take photos from your iPhone. Love love love this camera. Pics come out CRYSTAL CLEAR! I do have the lens the camera came with and notice it’s really good with group photos, And I bought the 50mm to give me blurry backgrounds, and that one is mostly for single person shots. Am I right on that sir?
Thanks for sharing and yes you are correct as far as lens choice for singles and groups... you would have to be really far away to use the 50mm for a group shot ;) Much better served for single portraits and subject separation stuff like products or flowers for example in my opinion... All the best, Jay
Awesome valuable video. I have a quick question, though. You said the canon r50 has a UHS-1 card slot, but you linked a UHS-2 card from Prograde in the description info.. Will the UHS-2 Prograde card be compatible with the R50 without any complications??
Yes, and it will also read faster when you copy the photos and videos to your computer if you use a good SD card reader as well. The cheaper SD card geni.us/ocM6zGO like this will also work great, just slower transferring files is all... I added the cheaper card to the description as well, I'm not sure why I did not include it also, thanks!!
Hi Jason Brother ! The video is amazing and no one can make this video better than you ! I understood everything very well and I am getting mine in 2 more weeks. I am going to watch this a few times. And I am from India, I am 13 right now, so I want to start a channel based on Drums(tutorials,covers,tips,etc.). So do you think , the kit lens, the 18-45mm one, will be suitable or should I purchase another lens ? And I also have a Maono Condenser Microphone with the USB A output and I have no idea how to connect it to the R50. So could you help me out with it ?
@@Jason_Hermann Oh, so I should go with the shotgun mic in this case. Thank you Jason Brother ! But however the video was amazing, and I actually can't express how good it is
You are very welcome and Merry Christmas... Any mode, Macro has to do with the lens allowing you to focus really close to stuff, hence the need for macro lenses... Every lens offers a minimum focus distance, meaning how close it will focus on something and you can see this in the specs of lenses.
Great video. Going to have to watch multiple times i think! What settings would be useful for whale watching?? I am going to play with the burst shot setting to capture multiple images, as well as trying the tracking focus. I am hoping to find a preset scene which will work for bring conditions. Any other tips to think about please let me know! I have also bought a polarised filter to hopefully reduce glare and a lens hood to shield light.
It sounds like you are on the right track! Burst shot and a Polarizer will help a lot! I don't think you will need to use tracking, but it's a great tool to play with before hand just encase!
Hey awesome video. I have a problem. At 1:00:00 when you were in Manuel mode, mine looked a bit different and I want to change it how you have it. Some settings must be wrong. I also have the light meter next to shutter speed and apature, but I can’t touch it and make it bigger like you have. And in the top right corner, I have a thermometer symbol which isn’t there in the video. I also haven’t got the symbol next to the Q symbol. Thx for your help
As a beginner, I don't know how someone can sort their way through the camera and its menus without your videos. This has been a tremendous help for my family and I before we travel to Italy. Question: What is the actual utility of HDR mode, as it pertains to still photos? I guess I don't know understand the difference between changing the image quality, and turning HDR mode on? Thanks again!
Hello, yes the HDR option that I showed is for stills and honestly i would not use it very often unless the scene was super bright and dark at the same time.
Just got my R50 and your video was very helpful getting me started. Do you have a favorite wrist strap. This camera is so small, I don't think I want a full neck strap, but being small I can see how it could get dropped.
Right now I am using the Falcam wrist strap which is great, but not available yet on Amazon, so I would recommend the next best thing which is the Peak Design wrist strap you can see here: geni.us/mUsw
Not that many RF-S lenses yet to choose from honestly, but for now I would say the 18-150mm @ 150mm is what I would try and use with the background as far as possible from the subject if you have that lens. Otherwise the RF 50mm f/1.8 lens geni.us/Wb3yaWq would prolly be your best option for the money.. For focus I would just leave it in the full area mode with the human subject detect on. It should find the human eyes and lock on nice and easy...
Hi Jason! Thanks for all the great info. I like the way you explain everything ! You make it very easy to understand Keep the great videos coming !
I just bought
The nifty fifty is a great all around lens that's about $150-$160.
24-240mm will do pretty much everything.
After 10 months of saving, I'm finally getting my first camera. This video is really helpful and gets me more excited! Thank you!

Also does this camera have a built in flash? Or do I have to buy a seperate one? Thanks so much😊
Thanks for the video guide, I got this camera some months ago and found it really helpful! 😊
One of the best videos of this camera, thank you so much!
Thank you for this tutorial that really helps to start with, I just bought this camera yesterday and I have no skills to use camera at all.

Thank you for the high fps tutorial. No wonder my videos werent that top notch for my beginner camera
Thank you. You covered some of the items Michael Maven did not cover. Much appreciated.
You are very welcome and Michael does a fantastic job, so I'm sure he covered a few things I did not as well. All the best, Jay
A splendid review; detailed yet straight to the point. Many thanks! 🙏 ☺️

I added the cheaper card to the description as well, I'm not sure why I did not include it also, thanks!!
thank you, every second of this video was worth it!
Glad you liked it!
Super helpful tutorial, just got mine and I was a bit lost as a beginner! ☺️
You can't connect a the USB mic to the camera as far as I know, and yeah I think the 18-45mm will work well for you!
@@Jason_Hermann Oh, so I should go with the shotgun mic in this case. Thank you Jason Brother ! But however the video was amazing, and I actually can't express how good it is
Great video. You covered a few things that others missed.
Hi Jason, Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was very helpful.
You're very welcome and thank you for the comments Marie :)
Great guide🤝just bought R50 and I'll need this...💪
Great tutorial, thanks. Can't wait to get out with my R50 and try those settings.
This tutorial is amazing! Thank you so much!
Brilliant! Thanks for putting this together, great crash course!
Thank you so much! I'm so excited to begin take nice pictures with this amazing camera♥
I've just decided on one (the 2 lens kit) from Crutchfield, I'll have to watch your vid before I get it. Thanks!
Just got this camera for Christmas, thanks for the EXCELLENT tutorial. In which mode can I shoot in Macro?
You are very welcome and Merry Christmas... Any mode, Macro has to do with the lens allowing you to focus really close to stuff, hence the need for macro lenses... Every lens offers a minimum focus distance, meaning how close it will focus on something and you can see this in the specs of lenses.
Props to you Jason. I am considering this camera as a first. I plan to do videography and some light photography
Awesome to hear and a great first camera option for sure 👊
Thank You Jason i've got my R50 Just this November for my Events Business
Do you know if we can take the noise reduction off for video?
Thanks bro it's a big help for me i got mine only this week.
This was the PERFECT tutorial. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for this video. I am going to save it and refer to it as I need too.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! on 5:20 you mention that you can use this for charging. Charging what please? thank you in advance !
Hello, For charging the camera battery while the battery is inside the camera.
Watched this before I bought it, and now I know what to save for! Thank you for the tutorial, or as Mark would say, t-turial.
Hope you enjoy it!
thank you so much for putting this video together and explaining everything in details it really helped me
You're very welcome!
Great video to get started. Thank you heaps 😊
Thank you for the informative video!! What's the best lense/focus to use for back to school headshots?
Not that many RF-S lenses yet to choose from honestly, but for now I would say the 18-150mm @ 150mm is what I would try and use with the background as far as possible from the subject if you have that lens. Otherwise the RF 50mm f/1.8 lens geni.us/Wb3yaWq would prolly be your best option for the money.. For focus I would just leave it in the full area mode with the human subject detect on. It should find the human eyes and lock on nice and easy...
This is what I needed, thanks for explaining the basics!! 😊
You're very welcome!
This was a wonderful video. I am planning on getting a R50 and will repeat watching this excellent video
