Cropped sensors suck....at the same price it's best to grab a Canon EOS R, RP and maybe R8 which in my opinion is the best none IBS Canon Camera for vlogging even with a 50mm which looks like your 16mm but with great bokeh for video, the whole photo demo is a scam man, you need to double the shutter to match the video resolution.
@@mikehunt576 I own full frame, crop sensors and medium format. Crop sensors don't suck unless you're a terrible photographer who doesn't know how to expose properly. The R8 is not at the same price point. It's literally almost 3X more expensive, which would not make it at the same price point.I do agree with you that the R8 is a bad ass camera. I have no idea what you're referring to when you're talking about a photo demo being a scam. I shoot my videos at 30FPS and my shutter is at 1/60/, which is twice my frame rate. So once again, not sure what relevance your comment has to my situation or my video. Thanks for watching.
@@KevinDeal Kevin, your claims that cropped sensors are as good as the photographer are irrelevant to people seeking a camera for video, who also make up around 85% of this market...so yeah its scam, camera companies are fully taking advantage of the fact the only reason they are in business is for video, if it was not these people cameras would almost be obsolete if phones did as well some how and it could get close at the speed of technology, when you think about it there are birds that can see 100 meters and this is on the horizon. Now as for crop sensors having any value at all, Canon discontinues support for the M50, why would or should anyone buy a cropped sensor at $500 when they can find a RP for that refurbished, used or even the body new, its certainly not because of size or weight cause some fun frames now even have bodies as close. Canon is also pushing the R50 and difference between this and a full frame is cropped, a beginner camera should be your iPhone, then if anything $300 Canon 5DII if photos are your only interest..but NO ONE is buying cameras for photos but sports and nature photographers, this is why cameras with IBS and lenses with stabilisation are expensive, wedding photographers are assumed to providing videos as well as photos with the same kits. I understand RUclips wil side with the market and the PR firms pushing them to take any videos down showing what I said here cause its true, its a total SCAM by these companies marketing photo capture features to the larger portion of their market which are people buying cameras for RUclips VIDEOS not photos!
I have both the RP and the R50, I bought the R50 with the RF-28mm mostly for Photogrammetry due to its light weight, in photogrammetry you have to take about 200+ pics of an object from all angles and its easier on my wrist then using my RP body. And I also take it with me on vacation as well while leaving my RP at home.
@@mkaufer05 I absolutely love the compact size of the R50 and pairing it with the 28mm is perfect for street and vacation. Like you said "easy on the wrist"
I recently took a one month trip to East Asia and bought the R50 with the RF 28/2.8 pancake and the RF 16/2.8 wideangle for times that I didn’t want to lug my 5DSR around. Well, the 5DSR spent the entire trip in the bag at my hotel and the R50 came out with me every day. Usually just with the 28mm lens making it completely pocketable, though at night I used the EF 35/2.0 IS on the control ring adapter. I never really missed my full-frame, and absolutely fell in love with the new mirrorless autofocus capabilities. I’m far from a beginner (40+ year advanced amateur) and other than some minor inconveniences like the non-locking mode dial or lack of additional dials (control adapter or RF lens make up for it) this camera is fully up to just about anything. I still prefer full frame for depth of field and for long shoots the R50 body is just too small for a comfortable grip, but I can’t imagine a better camera for travel.
Fuji has a pretty good argument for better travel cameras, but that's not convenient for someone who is already invested in the Canon ecosystem like you are. For you, the R50 and those tiny lenses are absolutely perfect for travel. I am eyeing another trip to Italy and I fully intend on shooting it with the R50 for the most part.
Went from using an iPhone 15 pro max to the R50 and it’s amazing how cameras blow phones out the water. Got the 50mm 1.8 and 55-250mm STM. Been enjoying the quality and my entrance of the camera world. Amazing review.
This guy single-handedly just made the most accurate and detailed review I’ve seen so far for this camera. I just bought an R50 and can say with certainty this guy is speaking the truth. Definitely worth giving him a sub and checking out this camera!
Love how this R50 is regarded as a "beginner" by Canon and ill informed camera snobs, yet produces exact results as a pro full frame at a third of the cost. I shoot real estate with this and the Nisi 9mm f2.8 RF lens, absolutely phenomenal results! This gem of a camera produces stunning 6k video @30fps, downsampled to 4k. Slow it down in post to 24fps and you have solid cinematic video, best I've seen.
Yes. I would argue that in terms of customization and a few other areas, its limitations do render it as a "beginner" camera. But in terms of image quality, if you take bad pictures, you can't blame the camera. The quality is most definitely there. Moving forward, I am using this camera as my static studio shot for my You Tube channel. So it's definitely up to my standards for video. Content creators who come over to this camera should be pretty happy with what they get for their money.
@@KevinDeal I agree with pros like Ken Rockwell, this R50 produces the exact results as a pro full frame. The Nisi 9mm F/2.8 RF lens is a 13.5mm full frame on this crop sensor, plenty wide for real estate. I can't recommend this camera body and lens enough to anyone looking to become a real estate photographer. As far as the so-called "limitations" rendering it as a beginner. To me, that's just highly unnecessary gadgetry folks like me actually prefer NOT to have and aids in my workflow. The less fluff, the better.
@@JeepTJWheelin Nothing wrong with the position you take. It sounds like you hit a home run. I own this camera, the R8, R7 and R5 and pros would have a hard time telling the difference between still shots I take on any of them. Thus confirming that the R50 is a bad ass camera.
I got the R50 as my first camera and really think it’s a great camera for us beginners and decent enough for the advanced photographer. I bought the R6M2 in September and am absolutely loving it especially with the 85 1.2. Great video,it’s nice to see this camera getting it’s props.
I have replaced my M50 with the R50 and I love this little camera. I was one of the digital combo, a Nikon camera on a top of a Kodak pack back in 1999 and the price for that camera was 10.000k plus the lens, the good thing was that my company paid for it. I’m not a beginner on the camera digital world but at 86 years old with a money budget this camera with 2 lenses for less than 1000k is perfect for me.❤❤❤
Watched a lot of R50 videos since I’m in the market to get one and purchased it as my first camera. Love how the video shows everything you need in the real world rather than lists specs that say nothing to me. Definitely the best video I looked at today! Thanks!
I just came over from the 80D, and bought this camera (arrived today), as I wanted to get my feet wet with Mirrorless 4k. I also bought a Viltrox adapter & speed booster, as I heve a ton of EOS EF Glass, and right now my budget won't alow me to lay down the bucks for more lenses (down the line I will). I'm pretty exited, as the reviews on it are very promising. THANKS for the AWESOME and PROFESSIONAL take and hard work to put out this video! LIKED & SUBED!!!
Thanks for the kind words! I tried to not throw my $3000 lenses on the R50 on this review as much as possible in order to keep in mind who would be purchasing the camera. I used to adapt EF glass to my R bodies and owned both the native Canon adapters and the Viltrox. I can tell you that the Viltrox adapter is fantastic and you have nothing to worry about in terms of autofocus speed and all that. If anything your older lenses will perform better because the R50’s AF is leaps and bounds better than your 80D. Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for this review. I've been watching lots of videos about buying my first camera. Considering the R50 and this video was likely one of the most helpful! Learned a lot about the camera and photography! Nice work!
I just bought one, mainly for "vlogging" and starting a videography journey, but also for the standard photo begginer journey aswell. Very good review, thanks alot. Got yourself a new subscriber. Take care
🙂 I ordered this last night about 1:00 AM 😂 it's my first camera I got the white color cos it seems more fun to have a white color one before I get a black camera 📸 iam so excited 🥰 Iv always wanted to do photography
This is the third video Ive watched from your channel. The significant other being the comparison between R8 and R7, when I was seriously thinking of overspending my budget to get the R7(I had to settle for the R10). What I like about your videos is you know exactly which key points to highlight that'd make an otherwise low end camera your forte. But thats essentially the skill factor coming into play. So in essence, a beginner with an R5 would likely take the lesser quality images than a skilled photographer with an entry level camera.
I think you definitely understand where I am coming from. It's the carpenter not the tools. And I always want to get the point across that just about any camera made today is "professional" in the hands of a professional. The R50 can absolutely take some serious pictures. Thank you for the kind words!
Great review, just picked one of these up for some still photo use and select video moments on a budget. As you mentioned using those budget friendly lenses those are exactly what I tossed in when shopping. I am excited to see how this entry camera suits our needs.
hey man, seeing you respond also to the most recent comments has put in me a glimpse of hope that you could answer also my questions. I'm turning 18 this year and for my present i asked my parents and my relatives only one thing. A new camera. Right now i am occasionally using my mom's Nikon D5000, a mid range dlsr from 2009 and i wanted a medium budget camera that could shoot great photos in auto mode, being that I'm not an expert at using manual mode (working on it), but also, since my passion for cars, a camera that can shoot good videos of like parked cars, a drive by etc... i already saw some reviews and yours is definitely one of the best, it explains in detail how everything works, the recommended lenses for every situation, but i got a question: is it a wise thing to purchase this camera for a light usage (shooting photos at my family during trips) considering the fact that i found a bundle with the body, a RF-S 18-45 and a 55-210 at $880? I am kinda satisfied with the 18-55 that i have in the D5000, but at times i feel like i need more zoom into something, like a far building or a "far close-up", so do you recommend buyng it? (my birthday is in august so i have time to change my mind eventually) Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the kind words. For all the genres you’ve mentioned the R50 will be excellent. It’s geared more toward people who want to shoot in auto modes, so I think it would be a fantastic camera for that. If you decide to shoot in M the camera can do that as well. The autofocus coming over from your 2009 Nikon will blow your mind As long as you don’t shoot in situations that are too dark, the lenses you are looking at will be great. And keep in mind that the R50 is compatible with all RF and RFS lenses. It’s also compatible with EF and EFS lenses when adapted. You coukd grow your lens collection over time and if you ever outgrow the R50, take them with you to the next camera.
@@KevinDeal Thanks for the very fast reply! love when "public figures" are actively trying to help people in need or just with questions. I will surely try to "bribe" my parents into purchasing this camera after your much appreciated and detailed feedback. Love from Italy!
This is the only in-depth review so far who thought of hobbyists and I thank you for that! I'm now convinced that although I love the size of this thing, I might find it lacking for my use case. I am not a pro and no intention at all of going pro but looking for what to upgrade from coming from an entry-level DSLR. Most reviews are from the POV of those intending to go pro which ultimately wasn't really helpful for me.
@@KevinDeal That's actually my 1st choice! But I wanted to make sure I'm not overspending. I'm currently going through your videos (just finished the R8 review) and see which resonates with me. I'm coming from a Nikon D5500 for almost a decade now and do travel documentation but only for personal use and creative outlet. Really no intention of going pro. You still think the R10 will fit me just fine? I'm now choosing between the R10 or the R8 (just to try full frame). The R7 has too many features I know I won't be using.
Great review. I did end up purchasing the r50 as I was debating between a few and this review was so detailed and increased the confidence of my purchase
Enjoyed your video on the Canon EOS R50. I am upgrading for the video and am not your usual target audience. I do macro and photomicroscopy, always tethered, don't care much for auto focus and exposure features. I usually shoot with a Leica Aristophot or with the old Canon FD autobellows with Aristophot bellows lenses or through a photo tube on a microscope. I wanted the 4K video for counting specimens and a cleaner sensor than the Canon EOS T7 that is getting old (~100k shots) or my worn out Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
I'm assuming you shoot tethered on a tripod. If so, the R50 won't bother you. But if you shoot tethered handheld. the fact that they put the USBC on the grip side is a baffling decision to me. The 4K on it is excellent and crisp. I think you'll be happy there, as long as you don't need to shoot in LOG. Thank you for the kind words!
Great video. I bought this camera wanting a nice small camera for hiking and walk around and promptly fell in love with it. I was blown away by how good the image quality and focus system is at this price point. By setting some custom functions you can access all the important functions without menu diving. (you can access drive mode quickly by pressing the right side of the cross keys) Solid image quality when paired with decent glass, great autofocus offering very good keeper rates and a compact package make it a no brainer if those things are important to you. Selective burst shooting with a fast card and the RF 100-400 have yielded some really nice wildlife shots for me. I have always like the 135mm focal length so the RF 85mm f/2 which equates to 136mm given the crop factor results in some extremely sharp images that really surprised me the first time I shot the combo. Don't let the "entry level" "beginner camera" titles bug you because I would put this camera up against some of Canon's best when it comes to image quality. P.S. I am primarily a stills shooter.
Thank you Kevin! London here abd i have been lookingbat r100 r50 and r10. Many moons ago i used Nikon for work and was developing ilford fp4 on the hoof lol. Then went into other work. I am almost retired now ... I think the r50 would be perfect for me albeit not with a kit lens! I am siscounting the excellet r100 and the more expensive r10. This r50 will do what i need! How times have changed. Thanks again for the informative review
I love Canon, but highly advise AGAINST the R100. It's not a good camera and will frustrate someone who has experience with photography. I would narrow your choice to the R50 and R10. R10 will have one extra dial and a little better video specs. There's a small part of me that might have opted for the R10 over the R50, but I also own an R5, so that pushed me away from the R10.
@@KevinDeal thanks for the info on the r100! I will go for the r50. It will do more than I need (I miss film, but it was an arse ache to develope in the field lol) I feel quite excited to explore digital and get back into something I loved. Please keep up the good work and inspiration to us all. Glad I found your channel. Best wishes from London !!
Excellent! thanks very much for such a useful and engaging review. I am still with expenses in some priorities, but I'd wish to have a digital home for my film EF lenses. A full frame would be indeed nice, but this small camera seems to be more than enough for what I need. I don't really spend time, as you mentioned about facebook, checking noise xP
I'm thinking about an R50 for casual use -- taking pics of the kids, the cat, creatures at the bird feeder outside the living room window, and of course the wife. Would it be a decent choice paired with the nifty fifty lens?
It would be fantastic for portraits with the nifty 50. Kids, cat, creatures. Absolutely. Lovely choice. Then, when your budget will allow, look into the 16mm for environmental portraits.
25:51 Twice in your video you mentioned the camera is not "weather-sealed". What does that mean? Can it not get wet at all? I am moving to the R50 from my older Canon 80D to finally venture into the mirrorless cameras. I mean normally I am not out in weather elements. But with the amount of hikes I film the weather in Wyoming can change rather quickly.
In my experience, you're fine in drizzle, you're not fine in a downpour. You're also not fine in a sandstorm. If your camera was weather sealed, you'd be fine in a downpour and a sandstorm. Hope that helps.
@@KevinDeal Yes, I was watching another video on the Canon R50 and he showed the difference between a weather sealed (Canon 80D) and one that is not. It all has to do with the rubber seal on the lens. Thanks!!!
Sorry for joiing the comments this late but I am curious what would happen if I mounted 70-300 ef usm using rf adapter to r50. With my old m100 it works great taking stunning pictures. I believe gearing it up with r50 will make it even better.
I've never used the EF70-300 lens before, but my guess is that adapted, the behavior will be improved performance because of the advanced autofocus system of the R50. In general, adapted EF lenses perform better on the RF system than they did on their own native EF system simply because the new autofocus system is light years ahead of the archaic systems of the past. I say go for it!
Drive mode was assigned to the right button of the cross keys when I got the camera. But I kept hitting it with my hand while holding the camera. So I deactivated that button amd moved drive mode to the bottom cross key. So it is still very accessible, but no more accidental touches. The really bonehead move IMO was having the ISO button flush with the surface of the camera. Impossible to find by touch!
Yeah. I did a poor job of explaining that I programmed it to do something else because I figured I could just access drive mode in the Q menu. Then when I went to the Q menu, I was disappointed to find it missing.
Great review, as you say anyone old enough ( me ) will remember film cameras and if you come from that era it has stuck when I take photos, frame and one shot forces you to have patience as still the same using iPhone for connivance as alway in your pocket. The video and photos has nice colours from what I can see for a budget camera, enjoyed watching 🥳
I have an RP with 24-240 (my main go to) and recently added an R50 with 100-400 (for extra reach). Both are FF lenses. So totally interchangeable. Haven't used the R50 much. Only issue has been the body is so small I accidentally touch buttons at the rear top RHS near the grip. Too close for my hand. Both better than my old 2012 purchased 600D (18 MP APS-C) + 18-270 zoom. Chose the R50 over the next up simply because it had later / better focus and later processor. Forget the R100.
@@KevinDeal Yeah, it's hard to see it's marketplace. Apparently meant to 'ease' a phone camera user into DSLR. Don't think so. I could have got an R10 demo for about the same price as a new R50. But the R50 is a later model and has the better technology.
Shout out to Round Rock! Love my R50 it’s been a great new camera. Stepped up from a T7 I started with and learn my way around. Looking to keep it and get a R7 for sports photography.
Great video, thanks for the info! And a cello guitar/bass player. You, sir, have earned a like/sub!!! I’m on the fence but probably pulling the trigger on one of these this weekend. I used to shoot film and have a darkroom but digital is all new to me. I’m hoping this will be a good intro for stills and perhaps some RUclips videos. Just reviews and stuff. Thank you!!!
Great video! I just got it during a black friday deal for just over $500 as a secondary camera with the idea of mainly use it for video on top of my 6d II which I mainly use for photography. And I'm blown away! It's crazy how with just a simple 50mm 1.8 or 24mm 2.8 you can achieve professional looking results for under 1000$! The idea was to use for talking head videos with good AF but I like it so much I'm using it for photo too with an adapter. Amazing Deal!
I was not sure about buying this camera or the r10 ( because the $ difference) but when you mentioned that the weight of the flash might break the hot shoe I changed my mind. I want to do weddings and more events which require a flash. Thx!
To be honest, you can get a refurbished R8 for the same price as a new R10 and that's a MUCH better camera than the R10. I bought a refurbished R8 and it comes with the same warranty as a new camera and I honestly couldn't tell it was refurbished at all. Or if you want to keep it APSC, I'd look into a refurbished R7, since it has the dual card slots. Much better suited for a wedding. www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/refurbished-eos-r8?color=Black&type=Refurbished&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwouexBhAuEiwAtW_Zxz6fzXzhPBd0j-I-NnuucGm-reBBGCVDeJWWfbV3ywkIiz4qGXD2XRoC7SEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Thanks! Probably the Canon RF24mm f/1.8. Sigma is about to release a 16mm f/1.4 which will be about the same price as the Canon 24mm which is an amazing lens.
I'm hoping to buy a Canon R50 this year, and I plan to use it for video production - 4K, 30 Fps is more than enough for YT, and that's all I need it for. Now, I need advice about affordable lenses, just one lens, that is proper for vlogging and creating short art films. I hear that the lens makes a cinematic feel, even more than the camera, so I need your help here. What lens should I buy, if I could bud buy just one?
It all comes down to budget, but I highly recommend you get a wide angle lens with image stabilization. I would start looking at this one. www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/rf-s10-18mm-f4-5-6-3-is-stm?Product_Search&Google_Product_Feed&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwnv-vBhBdEiwABCYQA2uz_Q5GzsfAFV4EUpzpLgVmnGKBUE5m_WibvjrGgnGCBw-3_D9sAhoC6RAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
@@EnchantingEscapesCinema I would not recommend the 50 1.8 for vlogging. The shot will be way too tight for that. It also doesn't have image stabilization so the handheld shots will be shaky.
I don't know a lot about designing lenses, but I can tell that on the rear of the lens there is a ton of glass. So all in all, there is quite a bit of glass on this lens. But most of it is on the back instead of the front.
After having Nikon D610, Canon R, RP, M100, Fuji Xt-3 had to buy my first camera again. And i like what i see in R50. Looks like best budget option until i get R6 II or at least R8 (but my previous experience shows that missing IBIS upset me the whole time i will be using camera, so must buy R6😅)
Also, I would like to hear why you would choose this instead of the R10 bor blog or youtube and to double as a walk around or holiday cam, it is simply the battery usage, or size ? Cheers.
Mainly size. If I didn’t own an R5 and an R7 and this was my only camera, I’d do the R10. The extra dial would be worth it to me when I shoot in manual. But since I already own a bunch of cameras I just wanted something fun and tiny. Which I feel this is.
@@KevinDeal Yeah, got it. I will have to go look really closely at the size difference. I am using an old pro body and want an R7 which I will get soon for some video and stills, it will also get one of either 70-200 or 24-70, I do not like lens changes :) but also sold of a bunch of other stuff, like am selling a ZV1 now and was thinking another RF body, because the ZV1 once you have a mic and cage on it is no longer a pocket cam, ppl put down APSc, but these other cams are often 1 inch sensors or less, it makes more sense at similar money to use a R50 and can plonk any lens on it, and is probably pocket size anyway with lens off, sort of. I was looking more toward the R10, because realistically neither will be small if I put any decent glass on there. It might get put on a gimbal for video sometimes, but I was really going to use R7 more so for that role. Either way it seems for still great results can be had. You can see, I am probably using the gear the way perhaps you would, but really this would replace ZV1, do you feel either would do better in dual stills and vid role ? I am assuming you may have tried the R10 here. I can see a R10 or R50 perhaps with the smaller lens on it, for some wider shots, vlog type stuff, and just have it handy instead of changing a lens on other 2 bodies. Sometimes there can be some gotchas. Ignoring size, if there any others between those 2 do you feel ? Thanks for any info in advance.
I will endeavour so to do. I'm new to photography, the introduction of a drone into my life has galvanised my interest. Your video has explained a lot. Thank you. I do appreciate it.
great video! thinking of upgrading from my m50. I use the ef-m 32mm prime and sigma ef-m 56mm prime! looks like the 35mm rf will replace the 56mm, what prime would replace the 32mm?
What a fantastic camera! Pity the USB C is on the other side. Wish the shutter mode was in the quick menu too, just saves navigating to the green my menu. I got myself a used M3 for a more compact package but I might upgrade that to this actually
In their defense, by default, it is one of the pre-programmed buttons, but I reprogrammed it because I thought to myself "surely it will be in the quick menu." Nope.....Just means I can't use that button for something else, which is lame.
True, but most people buying an R50 will be on a budget and Canon's flashes are over priced. Most people are going to want a Godox or something inexpensive. And that's why the adapter is lame. They weren't thinking of the end user at all.
I bought this mainly for video. The size of it and the 4K quality for the price range is awesome. I shoot on a gimbal most of the time so it being so light weight is a god send for my arms. Would I like a full frame camera that doesn't crop? Of course! But this camera gets me what I need for now at an unbeatable price range.
Hi Kevin, first I must say great video, I watched some over 20 videos about R50 but yours is by far the best, appreciate very much. Quick question; Me and my wife will get our first child very soon and I am in a need for a camera like the R50, so I can catch moments of my child growing up. What lenses would you recommend for that kind of photography, I just plan to take portrait photos of my family, no sports or wildlife etc. I used to take photos a lot but then quit, and that was almost 10 years ago. Back then I had a Nikon D90, and I loved 50mm lens for portraits, but I guess since than the technology changed a lot. Thanks again for the review.
Wow! Thanks for the kind words about my video! As far as lenses, my three picks would be: RF16mm f/2.8 - great for environmental portraits and landscapes RF35mm f./1.8 - has image stabilization, which will make it great for videos, shoots at a normal field of view (like what you see with your eyes). Would get this lens first RF50mm f/1.8 | Awesome for portraits. Especially when you want to isolate your subject. Because of the crop factor, the above lenses will present as 26mm 56mm 80mm
Thanks for the good review Kevin! I think about buying this for my holidays, trekking etc. Yes, I do own 85mm f/1.2, 135L, 10-20, etc... all of them really. But for parties, holidays etc I think of leaving the R5 at home. (I'm not complaining about the lack of hotshoe or left sided USB port. Who cares? Not me.) Anyway, do you think I can use this thing on my holiday to Iceland? Lots of rain and cold expected... Should I take the R5 and forget about this lightweight body?
I wouldn't take it into a downpour but I personally used mine with light rain and it was fine. It is not weather sealed, but it's still constructed well and if you leave the plastic hot shoe cover on top of the hot shoe it's not easy for light water to get into it. It will take beautiful shots of Iceland.
I own both cameras. Both are great. The R7 has IBIS and will likely feel better in the hand (there's more of it to grab). You will have redundant card slots in the R7 as well, for backup. The R50 is more geeared toward a hobbyist who requires professional features or someone transitioning from being a phone photographer to a mirrorless camera. The R7 is definitely geared more toward a pro. If you look on my channel, I did a 3 part review of the R7 where I took it all over the US, if you're interested.
Best R50 video review I’ve seen.👍 However you can adjust all the stills frame rates very quickly and also by accident with the back control wheel at 3 o’clock 😂
mmm you can set the format to C-RAW and the burst increases to 15 fps and there is not much difference in RAW image quality like you said, it's just for hobby
That is very true. You can. With the expense of artifacts in the shadows which comes with CRAW, especially at higher ISOs, which don't look the best on an APS-C.
I see someone has pointed out the frame rate button, sorry. I’ve got pro bodies and lenses but just bought the R50 with the kit lens 18-45 plus an Ef adapter and 2 spare batteries. 👍👍
Thank you for the awesome review! Is there a way to use some sort of "slave" (for lack of a better term) flash, for portraits? (Eliminating the need to use the hot shoe?)
Good review of what i think is a great little camera. My biggest gripe is and maybe i have missed something is no control lock, so i find myself making changes that i don't want due to it's size and i don't have big hands
Hi Kevin I have just started to play around after just getting this camera, I have the kit lens 18-45 would I notice a difference in quality and sharpness with a prime 50mm lens ? Thanks
The 50mm prime lens will be a bit sharper, it will let in about 3X to amount of light, so you can keep your shutter speed higher (low light) and the 1.8 maximum aperture will give you excellent subject isolation with blurrier backgrounds. The perspective will be excellent for portraits. In other words, I highly recommend getting the 50mm.
I don't shoot on Nikon and don't have a lot of access to Nikon. I've only shot on the Z6 and Z8, which I liked, but I don't have experience with any of their other models.
Cool video, as a Gopro user for years, I needed to step up i was looking for a camera not knowing anything about using a real camera, I dont know how a came across the R50 but i got it this passed December, good camera i think but I think i need a littie bit better camera that has stabilization, i tend to use stabilization on my editing software. can you recommend a buget friendly camera thats has stabibilaztion? I really love everything eles on this camera its small and really cool just need a bit of that stability Thanks..
I am in between R7 and R50, deciding which one as I want to shoot dance moves with weebill s gimbal and choose a camera that can capture the fast moves without rolling shutter issues or video lag when moved horizontally. I already have M50 mark ii with ef pancake, nifty fifty, telephoto 70-300 is ii usm and viltrox speedbooster. I was thinking of R7 till last night but after seeing your this video I am considering r50. Please let me know if I should still go for r7 with adapter for capturing sharp dance videos. Thank you in advance and for your amazing review. Great effort
Really interested in this camera, which lens would be recommended for an "all-round" lens? I will be using it for street photography when traveling in Japan. Would prefer an all round lens but maybe stretch to two different lenses. I wanna travel as light as possible 😊.
If you're looking for an all around zoom, the 24-105 or 24-240. If I were to travel and shoot street photography in Japan on an R50, I personally would just put the RF28mm 2.8 on and make it work. Lightest lens Canon makes and perfect for street photography.
The one thing I would say is, when referring to the deficiencies by yourself, using wedding, wildlife or other pro like photographers as examples for canon will not get any ears, the reason they should do what many experienced people think is normal is to...1 keep the experience the same across all cameras and models such as buttons and menus 2 because even pro or advanced enthusiast photographers may want a blog or travel cam that is small etc but still very familiar and 3 and most importantly, people starting up will be familiar and comfortable to upgrade, they will be the future bread and butter. Anyways, it is a broken way to think to cripple or do stupid ergo things to try and preserve your higher models, what should set models apart should be buffer/frame rate, sensor resolution/quality and that is about it, you should have as much else similar across the range so you can move when your skill and photography require it. Never nickle and dime customers, I think most will resent this.
@@KevinDeal thank you, I reached the same conclusion but I've never owned a camera, they praise the ergonomics of the r10 too, but it's not worth an exta 300
it can also use a wired remote where the R50 only has a wireless remote. For some this may not be any big deal, but when using things like focusing rails it is a big deal. That is why I kept my 70D for those times. I do like my R50, but if I had to do it over I would of paid the money for the R10 and had been a bit happier.
@@KevinDeal Hey R50 walk around and anything that's beautiful and I can express , I also love boxing shows my family is involved as I was thanks for reply , means a lot !
Some of their heavy $3000 lenses perhaps. Most won't be using it that way. I used the 28-70 f2 on it and it was pretty front heavy. I used my hand like a tripod collar mount to keep the weight balanced.
Im buying my wife a camera. She nor I know squat about camera's or photography. We'll be using auto mode for everything. Is the R50 body only paired with the RF-S 18-150mm lens a good idea?
@@mammydammy thanks. I guess I would need to know first what kind of photography you're looking to shoot. Most flashes on have a decent range of about 10 feet. There is also a built in flash to the R50, but it's not super powerful.
@KevinDeal I value your time, thanks. She would be taking pics of pieces of clothing that she sells online, also pics of friends, family, pets, and family vacations at the beach, sunsets. Things like that.
@@mammydammy If she wants soft light to make the clothes look nice, have her use indirect light from a giant window and then use a gigantic white sheet to reflect the light back on the shadow side. This is basically free. with that lens, it will do great outdoors. Indoors, she could just use the built in flash.
Sure. My static shot in the studio is the same every time. Even though the R50 doesn't have CLOG, which gives me more color grading abilities, what it does give me still looks fantastic. So I just record with the R50 and it saves me time in post production.
@@KevinDeal Thanks! Would you say that, although you can also use the R8 without CLOG, you don't miss what full frame gives you, and so the R8 is overkill for your static shot?
@@MichaelVAntony More or less, the dynamic range I need for my static shot in my studio doesn't need CLOG. The R50 is good enough to pull off that static shot. So I just keep it on the same settings and it looks great.
One of the best kept secrets of the photography and vlogging world … and I’m only an ‘enthusiast’ … but wow … uncropped 4K and opportunity for HDR (not my favourite format though) … 120fps for slow motion too in HD … autofocus is instant but use this with manual focus and stays locked on throughout the shot, especially with aperture of f9 upwards … 59 min non-stop recording time … my 70-200mm L Series lens marries brilliantly with the R50… everything (and more) than I need as an enthusiast … my journey has been EOS from the ‘M’ to the M50 mkii (two cameras) and now w two R50’s
It appears this feature has a plus or minus three stop range. You could always shoot in manual and over and under expose your images by more or less than three stops and then blend them all in post. It just wouldn't be as quick of a process as using AEB.
Hey, thanks very much. Photo hobbyist back in 1970's- 80's B&W film, develop, print, Leica M3, old school. Dislike computer work and sitting, so the R50 w RF 28mm in Jpeg for prints looks good for an old guy. ☮

How is canon R50 comparing with sony a6400 or fuji xs10 for a beginner?? I wanna buy a camera both for photography and videography, please suggest me which is better?
I have no experience with the Sony. However I shoot fuji and used to own the XS10. Outside of the fact that the XS10 has cool film simulations I personally find the R50 to be superior in every way. Way better autofocus and video than the Fuji.
@@KevinDeal Thanks a lot for your reply. I'm thinking to get a canon r50 but many people suggested me that sony a6400 is very good. Don’t have doubt, but as sony a6400 is a 2019's camra and canon r50 is very newer than that, so I'm getting confused.
@@zaimaabedinantara7295 Both Canon and Sony make fine products. The autofocus in a 2023 camera is likely going to have much better algorithms, If that is important to you.
Thanks for a great review. I bought the R50 together with two kit lenses and the 100-400 zoom as I generally favour wildlife photography. I consider myself an enthusiastic beginner although I have always had a camera. My previous camera was a Canon 80D which I have had to give up due to the weight and the beginings of arthritis. We are shortly to tour the far east and I am looking for a lens which will give me a good range without the need to keep changing lenses and also the need to keep weight down. The Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM has been suggested as a good travel lens but I am unsure how well it would fit with the R50. My understanding is there may be some compromise in performance. Do you have any views on this?
I personally have no experience with that lens but lots of people praise it for being an excellent travel lens, which to me suggests the weight distribution won’t be crazy. It appears to be just a little heavier than your 100-400 (for reference). Thanks for the kind words!
Are you going to get an R50? Did you just get one for Christmas? Do you have one? Tell me about it in the comments below!

Thank you. And yes, the autofocus on the R50 is practically a cheat code. Such a great value of a camera. Thanks for the watch and the kind words.
This guy single-handedly just made the most accurate and detailed review I’ve seen so far for this camera. I just bought an R50 and can say with certainty this guy is speaking the truth. Definitely worth giving him a sub and checking out this camera!
Thank you for the kind words!
@@KevinDeal 👍
It does not produce the same results lol
Just bought my first camera. I decided to go for the R50 and I love it! So stoked to start my photography journey. Thank you for your video.
Congrats! Thanks for the kind words.
I got the R50 as my first camera and really think it’s a great camera for us beginners and decent enough for the advanced photographer. I bought the R6M2 in September and am absolutely loving it especially with the 85 1.2.
Great video,it’s nice to see this camera getting it’s props.
It really is! As an R5 owner, there's enough in there to keep me happy for like 1/3 the weight. Thank you for the kind words and happy New Year!
I have replaced my M50 with the R50 and I love this little camera. I was one of the digital combo, a Nikon camera on a top of a Kodak pack back in 1999 and the price for that camera was 10.000k plus the lens, the good thing was that my company paid for it. I’m not a beginner on the camera digital world but at 86 years old with a money budget this camera with 2 lenses for less than 1000k is perfect for me.❤❤❤
It's a fine camera and in the hands of a capable photographer, you can pretty much do anything with it.
This is an amazing overview of the R50. I just purchased the camera last week and it’s a keeper for sure. Your content is great 😊
Thank you! The feedback is always appreciated. It's a fun camera. I hope it gives you years of enjoyment!
Had mine for a couple of weeks now. It’s my first real camera. I’m in love. It’s just a little guy, and so much fun!
Nice!I love mine
Watched a lot of R50 videos since I’m in the market to get one and purchased it as my first camera. Love how the video shows everything you need in the real world rather than lists specs that say nothing to me. Definitely the best video I looked at today! Thanks!
Great to hear! Glad I could help!
Nice work!
It's always an honor to get comments like yours. It lets me know that my channel is helping people!

Congrats!
my first camera also I got the black one. wanted the white but they werent available. enjoy😊
Did you order one with the lens? I’m struggling what lens to get with it.
Glad it was helpful! Enjoy your new R50!
hey man, seeing you respond also to the most recent comments has put in me a glimpse of hope that you could answer also my questions.
The autofocus coming over from your 2009 Nikon will blow your mind
As long as you don’t shoot in situations that are too dark, the lenses you are looking at will be great. And keep in mind that the R50 is compatible with all RF and RFS lenses. It’s also compatible with EF and EFS lenses when adapted. You coukd grow your lens collection over time and if you ever outgrow the R50, take them with you to the next camera.

Glad I could help! If it's too tiny for you the R10 might be a little better. It's a little larger.
The R7 has too many features I know I won't be using.

hello from India. this video was super useful for me to chose the right camera. thank u so much.
Glad it was helpful!
This guy the real deal hopefully we get to see more videos of the r50
Thank you.
Just a beginner , best professional review ive seen for an R50 new to photography owner , thank you !
Thank you!
Good review, but you forgot to mention and try the digital stabelizer who is sepose to be good. The digital zoom is also useful for bird photograpers.
I mention it in the video section. I wasn't able to get good results with it. I did fail to mention the digital zoom.
Happy New Year!
Great video. I bought this camera wanting a nice small camera for hiking and walk around and promptly fell in love with it. I was blown away by how good the image quality and focus system is at this price point. By setting some custom functions you can access all the important functions without menu diving. (you can access drive mode quickly by pressing the right side of the cross keys)
Solid image quality when paired with decent glass, great autofocus offering very good keeper rates and a compact package make it a no brainer if those things are important to you.
The 85 f2 is a fantastic lens. The R50 is a powerful camera for the money. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Kevin!

Great video!!! Your professional experience and how you deliver it on video is superior to anything out there!
Thank you. I appreciate it!

Same here! Although I have finally left the EF mount for good and am 100% RF now.
Thank you. I'll keep my T7i and save for another one. Like the R7 at least
I own the R7. A fine camera.
Thank you! It's a powerful camera, for sure.
Thanks for the detailed video. I guess it's clear that photography lies more with the photographer than with the camera.
The carpenter is definitely more important than the tools. But tools are still fun! Thanks for the watch!
The R100 is not a good camera. I think you went the right route going with the R50.
@@KevinDeal Yeah, it's hard to see it's marketplace. Apparently meant to 'ease' a phone camera user into DSLR. Don't think so.
I could have got an R10 demo for about the same price as a new R50. But the R50 is a later model and has the better technology.

I like mine for a drastic change of pace in weight. That R5 is a heavy camera. lol. The R50 with a tiny lens on it is perfect sometimes.
One of the best detailed and unique reviews I've watched on the R50. Thank you so much 🙏🏼
I appreciate that!
A complete review, thanks , I just ordered mine :)
Congrats!

I don't know a lot about designing lenses, but I can tell that on the rear of the lens there is a ton of glass. So all in all, there is quite a bit of glass on this lens. But most of it is on the back instead of the front.

very good video too
After having Nikon D610, Canon R, RP, M100, Fuji Xt-3 had to buy my first camera again. And i like what i see in R50. Looks like best budget option until i get R6 II or at least R8 (but my previous experience shows that missing IBIS upset me the whole time i will be using camera, so must buy R6😅)
It's a rocking little camera.
Very helpful. I was thinking this could be a second body backup, but with those cons I think not.
Glad it was helpful! I think of it as more of a fun travel camera. My R8 is my perfect backup to my R5.
This is the review I was looking for, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
16:45 - Absolute true words of wisdom!
Glad you agree!
I’m considering swapping my eos 77d for the R50 would you say this is an upgrade or not..? Great video btw 👍
If you rely on autofocus, definitely.
@@gregausit the R7 isn't much more than the R10 and a much better camera.

great video! thinking of upgrading from my m50. I use the ef-m 32mm prime and sigma ef-m 56mm prime! looks like the 35mm rf will replace the 56mm, what prime would replace the 32mm?
I'm not sure if they made a prime to replace it. The Sigma Contemporary line is fantastic. I have it for my Fuji set up.
What a fantastic camera! Pity the USB C is on the other side. Wish the shutter mode was in the quick menu too, just saves navigating to the green my menu. I got myself a used M3 for a more compact package but I might upgrade that to this actually
In their defense, by default, it is one of the pre-programmed buttons, but I reprogrammed it because I thought to myself "surely it will be in the quick menu." Nope.....Just means I can't use that button for something else, which is lame.
i just got the R50 with the kit lens 18mm to 45mm but I bought the 10-18mm ultra wide :D
How are you liking it?
did you use HDR-PQ? its suppose to be something with a good colour range
I didn't go over it in the video obviously, but I have tried it. I think it makes things look fake, personally. Never got along with it.
25:20 you don't need the adapter if you buy canon flashs lol they they are locking you into there eco system with the special canon only hot shoe.
True, but most people buying an R50 will be on a budget and Canon's flashes are over priced. Most people are going to want a Godox or something inexpensive. And that's why the adapter is lame. They weren't thinking of the end user at all.
@@KevinDeal I think because new people don't know any better they will just think to only buy Canon and that's what I think they are going for
I bought this mainly for video. The size of it and the 4K quality for the price range is awesome. I shoot on a gimbal most of the time so it being so light weight is a god send for my arms. Would I like a full frame camera that doesn't crop? Of course! But this camera gets me what I need for now at an unbeatable price range.
It’s fun to use. So light. Thanks for the watch!
@@KevinDeal Thanks doing a kickass review.
nicely explained all the features. Thanks Kevin
My pleasure!
As far as lenses, my three picks would be:
RF16mm f/2.8 - great for environmental portraits and landscapes
RF35mm f./1.8 - has image stabilization, which will make it great for videos, shoots at a normal field of view (like what you see with your eyes). Would get this lens first
RF50mm f/1.8 | Awesome for portraits. Especially when you want to isolate your subject.
Because of the crop factor, the above lenses will present as
26mm
56mm
80mm
@@KevinDeal Thanks!
Hey great review..
What off brand adapter would you recommend for purchase?
I have EF and EF-S glass...
Thinking about either R50 or an R7.
Thanks
I own both cameras. Both are great. The R7 has IBIS and will likely feel better in the hand (there's more of it to grab). You will have redundant card slots in the R7 as well, for backup.
The R50 is more geeared toward a hobbyist who requires professional features or someone transitioning from being a phone photographer to a mirrorless camera. The R7 is definitely geared more toward a pro.
If you look on my channel, I did a 3 part review of the R7 where I took it all over the US, if you're interested.
To your off brand adapter question. Viltrox makes a good one.
please review Sony a6700 as well

mmm you can set the format to C-RAW and the burst increases to 15 fps and there is not much difference in RAW image quality
like you said, it's just for hobby
That is very true. You can. With the expense of artifacts in the shadows which comes with CRAW, especially at higher ISOs, which don't look the best on an APS-C.
Wonderful review. Many thanks. 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
I see someone has pointed out the frame rate button, sorry.
I’ve got pro bodies and lenses but just bought the R50 with the kit lens 18-45 plus an Ef adapter and 2 spare batteries. 👍👍
It's a cool little camera
Thank you for the awesome review! Is there a way to use some sort of "slave" (for lack of a better term) flash, for portraits? (Eliminating the need to use the hot shoe?)
You still need a trigger, which connects to the hot shoe. And you need that stupid $40 adapter. So no.
Thanks for the kind words!
@@KevinDeal I was thinking optically triggers, but looks like the speedlight is the way to go! Thank you, I really like the channel and video!
a6400 or this one for the same money with basic kit lens? Which one to buy?
I don’t have any experience with the Sony, so I can’t make a recommendation between the two.
Good review of what i think is a great little camera. My biggest gripe is and maybe i have missed something is no control lock, so i find myself making changes that i don't want due to it's size and i don't have big hands
Good point! I can definitely see that being frustrating.
@@KevinDeal thanks Kevin great video 👌

I think the R7 is the cheapest Canon with IBIS. I did a three part review of that camera if you're interested. Or, maybe look for a used R6.
@KevinDeal hey thanks really appreciate it I'll check them out. 👍
I am in between R7 and R50, deciding which one as I want to shoot dance moves with weebill s gimbal and choose a camera that can capture the fast moves without rolling shutter issues or video lag when moved horizontally.
Great insight.

Correct. I reprogrammed it and was surprised they didn’t put it in the Q menu.
So I'm curios if the r10 is worth the extra 300$ it costs compared to the r50, any thoughts?
Amazing video btw!
When I did my research I think the R10 only had slightly better video feature. It wasn’t enough to get me to spend more money.
@@KevinDeal thank you, I reached the same conclusion but I've never owned a camera, they praise the ergonomics of the r10 too, but it's not worth an exta 300
The R10 is more for bird, sports with the joystick , dials and larger buffer
it can also use a wired remote where the R50 only has a wireless remote. For some this may not be any big deal, but when using things like focusing rails it is a big deal. That is why I kept my 70D for those times. I do like my R50, but if I had to do it over I would of paid the money for the R10 and had been a bit happier.

Some of their heavy $3000 lenses perhaps. Most won't be using it that way. I used the 28-70 f2 on it and it was pretty front heavy. I used my hand like a tripod collar mount to keep the weight balanced.
Ok, thank you for the reply.
Im buying my wife a camera. She nor I know squat about camera's or photography. We'll be using auto mode for everything. Is the R50 body only paired with the RF-S 18-150mm lens a good idea?
For outdoor photography, that would be a good combination. For indoor photography without the assistance of a flash, that lens will struggle.

Hi, can you say why you switched from the R8 to the R50 for your studio video setup?
Sure. My static shot in the studio is the same every time. Even though the R50 doesn't have CLOG, which gives me more color grading abilities, what it does give me still looks fantastic. So I just record with the R50 and it saves me time in post production.

@@MichaelVAntony More or less, the dynamic range I need for my static shot in my studio doesn't need CLOG. The R50 is good enough to pull off that static shot. So I just keep it on the same settings and it looks great.

R10 ou R50 considerando a diferença de preço?
R10 has a better buffer rate and slightly better video features. Outside of that, no real difference.
Can you use more then 3 stops with AEB with this camera?
It appears this feature has a plus or minus three stop range.
You could always shoot in manual and over and under expose your images by more or less than three stops and then blend them all in post. It just wouldn't be as quick of a process as using AEB.
