    Honestly that person talking about minimum wages has never heard of the Maslow pyramid clearly. You cannot work on self actualisation and growth if your lower hierarchy needs aren't met, aka food, shelter and safety. So you need a liveable wage to even get to the point where you can grow

    I’m reading a Star Trek book that takes place between season 2 and 3 of discovery and the main character basically jumped 900 years into the future from a functioning moneyless society into a stateless capitalist society. It’s very interesting because she notes how she never had to think about work in terms of survival and acquiring money, she just worked because she believed in the cause, but now she is forced to do jobs that she morally doesn’t agree with because if she doesn’t she won’t have enough money to survive. She says that by working this way she isn’t achieving her best and she doesn’t think a lot of people are because they’re working themselves to the bone on stuff that really doesn’t matter rather than applying themselves to the betterment of society. Anyway, work should be for the betterment of society and not to literally avoid dying. And the book is called wonderlands if anyone is interested, but you should watch Star Trek too.

    Minimum wage was literally started to be able to support a family. That is why it was set at the minimum. Initially it increased at the same/a similar rate as inflation, so that it was still the bare minimum of a livable wage. Since about the 70s, the minimum wage in the US has been fairly stagnant or increased very very little. Our cost of living has more than tripled and minimum wage is still only like $8/hr. It's abysmal.
    Also, if no one works those "minimum wage jobs" that are supposed to be a starting point except teenagers and young adults, we won't have as many stores and restaurants and fast food places. They expect to have a service available but also deride the people providing that service.

    • @coralovesnature
      @coralovesnature 2 года назад +2

      It's actually only $7.25/ hr nationally, but some states and localities have a higher one in place. It has now been 12 years since it has been adjusted at all, which is the longest period since a minimum wage was implemented that it hasn't been adjusted (the second longest being 10 years, 1997 - 2007). I agree, it's hypocritical that a lot of these people expect to be catered to by people in so called "low skill" jobs, but complain when there aren't enough workers in these professions, which is because the amount of money to be made is not incentivizing.

Elon Musk provides nothing to society, and makes one of the top incomes in the world, due to the efforts of underpaid and exploited workers everywhere from the Tesla factories to the emerald mines. People like him have directly and indirectly caused so much harm that I honestly don't think it's fair to equate whatever stress they have to the misery that thousands of their workers face on a daily basis.

    "Automatically disagreeing with what the government/science say/s isn't original thought" or something. like people think they're not sheep or whatever just because they automatically disagree with what the government has put in place for COVID-19, or what scientists recommend for climate change, etc. It's not forming your own opinion to hear something and discard it straight away, it's closed-minded, which is the very thing these people claim not to be.

    9:00 This is the effect of Reagan economics, more tax breaks for the rich and keeping the minimum wage low so corporations can get more profit, which if you learn in any history or economic class, actually creates a negative feed back loop where employees actually cant pay for the stuff they make or sell, leads to a less productive economy, and now 40% of America is in poverty....wages have gone up 12% in the last 30 years. Prices have been raised 150% since the 90s. Inflation doesnt matter because no one is accounting for the fact that 7 people in america own more than half the wealth in America. My Mother worked from home during the lockdown as her health is poor (She has Osteoporosis, an old Fracture that never healed properly and suffered 2 Heart Attacks prior to the outbreak), and is still currently working from home. I work more hours than her at unreasonable hours (5am lmao), yet I make way less than what she makes. Is it unfair? I guess. Am I going to force my old, sick Mother out to work during a Pandemic as a result? HELL NO! Stay safe and work from home if it turns out to be better for you.
    EDIT: I do want to mention that I wish something would be done to improve the lives of those of us working 5-7 days a week, yet still not making enough to survive or further our education to get a better paying job. I've developed chronic wrist pain during the Pandemic, and my workplace is what has caused it. Unfortunately for me, I can't afford to not work. So, I now deal with these painful flare ups twice a week with some hella strong anti inflammatories - But I shouldn't have to be working my ass off to the point where I'm now in constant pain in the first place just to make enough to barely survive. It sucks.

    Hi Corry
    idk if you'll even see this but I had a small piece of constructive criticism. I just wanted to ask if you could avoid using the word 'narcissist' as it further stigmatises pwNPD and creates the idea that pwNPD are inherently bad. NPD is already hated and used to diagnose people who do bad things, which furthers the idea that all pwNPD are evil. Maybe instead of 'narcissist' you could use 'selfish', 'self-absorbed', 'egocentric' or 'egomaniacal'? It would help pw personality disorders and destigamatise them. I enjoy watching your videos and learning more in depth about issues in society. I hope you can accommodate for pwPDs and allow there to be more safe spaces for them.
    Thank you :)

    • @stillnotcorry
      @stillnotcorry  Год назад +2

      tbh i disagree - narcissism is a normal human trait & it doesn’t always refer to the condition. in the same sense that depression & anxiety don’t always mean clinical depression or gad.
      i’m pretty sure that it’s clear from context that I’m not talking about people with npd. ultimately, the adjectives you’ve suggested would also be used to describe the presentation of npd - so it’s not like dodging those dodges the stigmatisation.
      narcissism being a negative trait doesn’t then mean that people with npd are inherently bad people. pretending that narcissism isn’t a negative personality trait won’t stop stigmatisation.

    Hey, I am a fan but one lil thing is that in that second clip you seemed to be pushing for a higher minimum wage but countries with the best standard of living actually have eliminated minimum wage. Sweden, Norway, Denmark the countries you associate with left utopia actually don't have minimum wage. Trust me, I ain't no super capitalist and Technically follow a form of third way socialism. Also I'm working class from north UK currently working at asda so I ain't some rich middle class boi

      Your understanding of science (sci guys fan) and alot of social elements and issues are expansive however, your understanding of economics ain't amazing (not trying to be offensive, everyone has their specialities and a jack of all trades is a master of none).

      Just want to stress I rly don't want to come across as insulting just business and economics is extremely difficult and many left wing peeps tend to simplify it to fit their beliefs rather than mold their beliefs on it. My beliefs in regards to this are more formed around the fact that companies are selfish and will act with whatever will benefit them. Therefore, government should act as a guiding hand reframing what is good for them through steep penalization and incentivisation, tax hikes and fines for doing this and tax breaks and grants for doing that.

      I’m saying that the minimum wage in the US is so low that people can have a job and be unable to afford rent. Ultimately I don’t believe that people should have to work in order to survive, so I guess under that hypothetical framework a minimum wage would be unnecessary. However eliminating minimum wage in the US right now would hardly result in better conditions, there are a lot of differences between the US and those countries (none of which I’ve ever said were leftist utopias lol). Pretty sure the reason these countries don’t have a minimum wage is bc of strong unions etc. Which is something that i’m all for…
      The minimum wage exists, and as long as it does it should be enough to live on. If there were a system to replace it that could feasibly work in the US right now, then that’s a different conversation. even so, that system would probably have some kind of minimum wage bargained for by unions rather than set by the federal government
      i’ve never said that i have a particularly deep understanding of economics lol, it’s why i don’t really delve deep into specifics. not really sure how i can take that comment constructively lol - you’ve not really given me anything to go on… i didn’t delve deeply into the topic (because I’m not super well read on it) but it really seems like the criticism here stems from that.

      @@stillnotcorry oh sry I should clarify, by you when I refered to the left utopia I meant general British society. As in the average Brit thinks of Scandinavia and associates it with good vibes and left policy working rly well. I didn't think you would read nor reply so was more speaking in a general sense.
      Also I totally agree, I don't think the minimum wage can simply be removed in the US and expect it to be alright, it would go awfully. It was more just that you seemed to swing into an area that was a tad more nuanced. I'm sry if I irritated you, it was not my intention but I guess if there was to be and constructive criticism it would be maybe to avoid these super complex nuanced areas idk 😐 tbf my economic politics especially won't allign with most of your viewer base so maybe ur doing what is right, u didn't claim anything as fact just simply added in a tad of you opinion, an opinion presumably shared by most of your audience. So I guess don't take my thing as criticism (once again I didn't expect you to read nevermind Reply) but more so wanted to also give a bit of a different Outlook. Love your stuff (especially sci guys), oh also you podcast helped me work through the pandemic at asda, something that was a truly horrifying period (I was on home shopping so we were not prepared for what came) keep vibing and making good content :)

      @@stillnotcorry just saw ur edit, I think it's a mix of unions and government policy and capitalism working well. I ain't a great fan of unions as they typically just run up costs which wouldn't necessarily be bad if we didn't live in a world where international trade exists and people can undercut you and destroy the industry (partially what happened up north in coal towns like Washington where I'm from)

    I do not tiktok so i wouldn't know, but i get the impression from what I see of it elsewhere that the user base is largely left leaning so like... I can only imagine what kind of response they're getting. I'm actually curious. Did they find their corner of the tictac or are they getting dog-piled every video?
