Between native Americans, black people, lgbtq+ people and women, I don't think you can find a single moment in the us history where all the people were feeling fully represented by the us flag at the same moment. There's obviously a more privileged group that made a decision about it without acknowledging the others
So like, the lgbtq+ community bringing more attention to certain groups of more oppressed people by creating an alternative flag, shows that we care more about the members of our community than how a symbol should look like or be more palatable to people like ben (it's not about them and even if was, they would be free to propose their own version, and that's what's great, you can create your own inclusive pride flag, it would likely still be recognisable bc the code they'd use are universally known
(And if that flag confuses him, idk what he'd do with middle age's coats of arms or certain cities' flag, man'd be lost

Not sure how I feel about this newest revision of the pride flag but I guess that's not for me to judge, if it makes people feel more included then ultimately it's probably a positive thing :) Some people don't even think us asexual people should be part of pride anyway so they'd probably tell me to do one lol

Personally I thought the point of the rainbow was that it already included the entire spectrum of identities inside it. As a bi/pan, demisexual, enby trans person I already felt represented by the simple rainbow. And I kinda think that like the term LGBTQIA+ constantly adding elements to try to explicitly include everyone, the more singled out for exclusion the specific groups that aren’t yet included feel. That’s just me though, and if people want to use this flag I’m not going to hate on them. I just like the idea of a simple symbol everyone can unify around equally.

We have a strange relation to our flag in denmark: you'll see them everywhere of you come here, and a lot of foreigners think we're super patriotic, but actually most of us don't relate the flag to our country really. It's a symbol of celebration mostly, we use it for birthdays and weddings, anniversaries etc. The way Americans equivalent their flag to patriotism is strange to me, because they also put their flag on merchandise. Well to put it simply, Americans have big senses of pride, and one thing they like to take pride in is the flag which represents the freedom we have and what it takes to gain freedom and preserve it. So to mean it is important to at least appreciate your flag especially if it represents the people that have fought and died for you.

Corry is right to point out that American history has been a constant string of cases where people disagreed about things, even though agreeing that they were all Americans. One classic case was:
"The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax protest in the United States beginning in 1791 and ending in 1794 during the presidency of George Washington...", as Wikipedia says. So my favorite Pride flag is any flag that people have that celebrates our right to define ourselves as we please. It's so ironic of Shapiro to pretend to be in favor of freedom, yet to try to be a force of oppression against the freedom of Americans to be whoever they are. The Shapiro hypocrisy stings. Sad.
In my school, we do the pledge of allegiance and have been since preschool.
But I myself have never felt connected to America or it's pledge.

But how can I have pride and faith in this country when a good part of the people in it wants me dead for my skin color, heritage, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

There are some in the class who don't stand for the pledge of allegiance. I don't know if it is a sign of disrespect, a sign of rebellion, symbolism of reality, or maybe they just don't care.
I'm thinking of joining them. I may have been born in America, but I am not excepted by it so why should I pledge my allegiance to something who won't pledge it back.
Maybe one day I'll see that flag, waving through the blue sky, and feel pride and love for my country that excepts me. But until then, I'll continue being an outsider.

I feel like lgbtqia+ should be a school subject, there's so much to it, and it's so important. It would make people feel so validated, and it will actually help you in life (unlike leaning every fucking writers effect 😒) that would be my favourite subject, I find it the most interesting thing ever 🏳️🌈
Or even something as simple as acknowledging that a person (author, historical figure, artist, scientist, mathematician e.t.c) is/was LGBTQ+. That would be a nice first step towards normalisation.

I personally don't like the newer pride flag because I think it's too cluttered design wise I personally prefer the original rainbow flag. I think that the the answer to whether or not wanting to date trans people is transphobic depends on the circumstance. If it’s about genital preferences then fine but if you exclude the possibility of dating someone only because you know they’re trans then I think it’s kinda transphobic.
Yeah I agree with the genital preferences thing, I can't fault someone for wanting to have a sex life on their terms, but I also know that a lot of people will be attracted to but refuse to date trans people even if those people have the right genitalia (ignoring people who have a hangup over infertility) and that's clearly based in transphobia.
hmm the thing is my attraction isn't a 'preference' and it's p homophobic to term it as such. however, i also understand that ppl can experience attraction differently while sharing the same label and to say that some ppl are inherently excluded from a certain label just bec they're trans is transphobic as hell and shouldn't be accepted.

How do you feel about the black and brown stripes representing people of color? I remember being pretty surprised when I saw that originally, it felt very reductive, but I guess pride flags could be seen as reductive too. I just really don't like that it separates out trans people and people of color. Makes me feel like they're being othered. Maybe it wouldn't bug me as much if other flags were highlighted. Like the Ace flag with rainbow or Bi flag with the rainbow.

I as an American Puerto Rican with a lot of indigenous blood(Taino) and in the lgbt community, don’t feel like “our” American flag is inclusive. I feel like it’s antagonist to the forgotten indigenous people of America and to anyone who is less privileged or discriminated against. I honestly feel on edge when I see a white man wearing the American flag because those are the type people who said or did racist things to me. I have been spat at and dog whistled to by an man in a pickup truck with the flag, a car of men drove by and tried to throw eggs and me and my sisters and yelled “massacre” at us. Another truck with men drove by and stuck their middle finger at us. All while men with the flag on their car…
As a pansexual person, I also do not particularly like the pan flag, so I just usually use the rainbow one. Also, I think he makes some great points in this video, especially the point where he says that it has nothing to do with Ben. It really doesn't, and he really shouldn't be complaining about this flag that makes people who are often forgotten feel accepted

I’m a lesbian, and I’m not attracted to trans women because I’m only attracted to my wife (she’s cis, btw). Trans women are women, that’s just a fact. But it’s not transphobic, I don’t think, for a lesbian to have a preference for cis women or a gay man to have a preference for cis men, as long as they don’t deny their gender identity.

I think his point was you can't really fly a sectarian flag over the military, at least in the videos I watched. Like it would be kind of silly to have a Christian flag, or a Children with cancer flag or cat people flag. Because these are specific groups of people instead of the American flag that supports all Americans.
At the same time, I also get why they wanted to fly the pride flag as a symbol of the military ending descrimination against lgbt individuals.
Ben cares because he's a lawyer and considers everything from a legal perspective. It's not about "some colors people use to be happy". It's about how we represent a united America.

@@jamesthezemnian753 Obviously there's the argument to be made that no one's dating preferences should be criticized, but I mean that doesn't excuse someone from scrutiny since your dating preferences still are shaped by your unconscious biases--i.e. back to the transphobia example, while you can say "hey, it's just my preference not to date trans people," you're obviously only saying it because you have internalized transphobic perceptions
