as an american, the way that we are taught nationalism as if it’s a fact and not personal ideal is absolutely insane looking back. we are completely taught that america is ALWAYS the best and could NEVER do anything wrong, it borders on cult-like. it definitely takes a lot of purposeful rewiring of your brain to work against it.

tbf I think it's pretty normal for kids to grow up believing what their parents believe. It's very easy to take opinion as truth as a child. I don't think their parents are sitting them down for lectures on how Trump is amazing and Biden sucks... But hopefully those kids will grow out of it and learn to think for themselves.

as a student primary school teacher, this level of indoctrination is terrifying. in Scotland, we are very much told that we can not bring our personal views into the classroom. This is to help teach children to think critically and i think it’s so important !!! this is literally so scary those kids are repeating exactly what children have heard in the home :(

Honestly, I grew up around way too much conservative crap like Ben Shapiro (and recently I’ve found out one of my parents loves Steven Crowder). The past couple of years I’ve been switching up my views since I’ve been taking the time to look at the other side which was missing for all of my life. I also grew up in a very conservative part of Ohio.
Being told when you’re a wee bean that trans people are so awful and then you end up being trans kinda makes you consider what else might be a bit wrong with the ideals you grew up with. So thank you, Corry, for being one of the content creators that opened up a world that I was always taught was so evil.

my mom made the decision to homeschool me when i was in fourth grade because i had severe anxiety from a young age and we were going to be penalized for the days that i had to miss school due to my panic attacks (i can understand the regulations in other contexts, it just wouldn't work for me). she was an amazing teacher and gave me the opportunity to thrive in my educational endeavors but unfortunately i knew several families from my co-op (a weekly class for homeschooled kids that provided social interaction and took some pressure off of the parents to teach us every single subject) who homeschooled their children for the sole purpose of indoctrinating them with their own religious and political views. we live in california lol.

I was taught that America was the best but I began to question that when I was 12. I realized this because I got introduced to how bad discrimination is here, when I left my kinda sheltered elementary school. I hear all the time about how in other countries minorities have more rights and I just wish America could get a little closer to offering those rights. I just can’t see how America is the best, when they are lying about how many more privileges white, cis, straight men have.

About the home schooling thing, it's very common amongst traditional religious people. I go to a very conservative private university and like 30% of the students were home schooled (which is an insane proportion). There are plenty of non-religious reasons that people home school kids, but a vast majority of home schooling is based on religious. Wisconsin v Yoder was a supreme court case about the right to take one's kid out of public school because of religious reasons.
Also, in my experience, home schooled kids have the WORST history education. Their parents will often teach them math, science, etc. fine. But it seems like home schooled kids are only taught about history to the extent to indoctrinate the kids into conservative perspectives.
And as for the kids not sounding realistic, idk it all sounds like dogma that I will hear trad religious conservatives tell their kids from day one. Like I don't think the kid knows what the supreme court is, but she has probably heard "the supreme court should overturn Roe v Wade."

At my brother and cousin’s joint graduation party a few years back (for context, this was in Texas, cause they both went to university’ in Texas), my cousin’s grandma literally said something along the lines of when kids go away to liberal arts colleges, they need to be ‘reminded’ of their values (I can’t remember if she said specifically ‘conservative values’, but that was what she meant, cause to her, values are just innately conservative) whenever they come home again. I was just kinda shocked when she said that, so I don’t think I said much in response, but I had a do-over, I’d probably be trying pretty hard not to laugh at what she said, cause her statement was/is /absurd/😂

I’m American and what I would like to tell conservative Americans is that if you believe in freedom of the marketplace, you can consider “ideologies” like a marketplace of ideas. If you present people with all of the ideas in the marketplace (in an honest way, not trying to manipulate them), people can choose the best/ most credible ideas to believe. If conservative ideas are “good”, people will then choose them freely out of their own accord. You shouldn’t need to manipulate people into believing something if is the best/ most credible concept out there.

Here's some armchair psychology, my thoughts on conservative paranoia.
Conservatives really do feel like the world is out to get them, they're genuinely scared of things they don't understand. I think it stems from some level of inability to look iat the world through other people's perspectives.
So when they do try to think about other people's perspectives they do so as if they were personally experiencing a specific situation from the other person's life, rather than through the lens of somebody with different life experiences. Pair that with intense anxiety about people that are different from them and then they end up with a really skewed idea of what other people are thinking, and don't realize that other people really don't think about them all that much and aren't out to get them.
