    Thank you for this. I just discovered you and am on my diagnosis journey. It’s been very helpful for me, so thank you. I’m worried shitless about my narcissism. I don’t want it to destroy my life but I see it slowly happening right in front of me. It’s so frustrating when one side of me is like “you are just one person on this earth, you are a tiny creature so make the best of what you can do” then the narcissistic supply needs to be filled and I say “you are going to achieve great things and people will look up to you for your intelligence and beauty” then another saying “you don’t deserve any of that shit, you’re going to self destruct and either die or end up homeless addicted to illicit drugs.” But then going back to the “NO you’re destined for greatness.” It’s kind of embarrassing to know that I think and feel this way. Like why can’t I just be ok with being a regular citizen in this world.
    LOL I remember when I would think “I’m going to do something big in this world and receive a Nobel Peace Prize” like wtf?!? I mean I know that’s not an impossible thing since anyone can, just have to do the work, but really? I’m here thinking I could win a noble peace prize for my work when I don’t even have an idea of what I would do, I just know I’m going to heavily impact many’s lives for the better.
    One more thing… I’m nervous about liking that I have narcissistic traits. I don’t like that I feel a sense of power when i manipulate, lie, and deceive people. I’m starting to work with a specialist and, why did I get a sense of pride when they confirmed that I have a lot of clinical narcissistic traits. I know why, but it’s frustrating. I don’t want to feel good or feel nothing when I do these bad things to people

    What's puzzling is how one comes to believe these things when typically everything in the outside world illustrates its untrue. Many narcissist's lives are a complete mess. How that translates in their mind to being superior is baffling.

      Disagree. Many are very successful. Especially if they have high IQs.

      @@elaineinarizona6354 There are successful narcissists, but it all exists on a spectrum and those who achieve at a higher level may be on the more mild end of the spectrum. If they aren't, it's likely that the success they attain is teetering on the brink of collapse, because someone with severe NPD is going to maintain a high level of chaos, and sustaining that gets more and more difficult over time.

      When your starting position is that the “outside world” is full of brainwashed, delusional people who are easily manipulated into believing whatever the ruling class wants them to, it’s not difficult to see yourself as superior precisely because you don’t value what most people do. Who is the arbiter of “right” and “wrong” when there is no ultimate authority(like a god)? Am I to value the opinions of other people(even strangers, who do not care at all about me) over my own opinions? Who is correct? Who is incorrect?

    I want to point out it has more to do with the underlying psychological factors and these symptoms don’t always indicate narcissism. It has more to do with the creation of a false self to protect from feelings of past trauma rather than the symptoms themselves, which can result from a false self

      Definitely. The DSM is just a guideline for professionals. NPD is definitely deeper than the diagnostic criteria.

    The DSM-5’s criteria is 🗑️ DSM-5-TR is a lot better, but still 👎 I’m convinced psychologists haven’t figured out what NPD is yet. I read about so much useless crap about our behaviors, some of them try to reach the inner child that is locked in the darkness within, hasn’t seen sunlight its whole life, muscles have atrophied, and is underdeveloped. They hope to encourage the child to try to grow and mature.
    Well.. You have to get past a wall of defenses first. Which brings me to my point. The number 1 line of defense is fantasies of perfection and grandeur. I’ve gone through so much of the literature.. Narcissistic fantasies are barely discussed.
    No studies on it, no in depth analysis of them, no case studies about it.. it’s like.. they forget it’s even part of the criteria 😆 Whyy? And shouldn’t it be mandatory to have that one? What Narcissist doesn’t have a vivid fantasy life? Whether consciously or unconsciously? Idk. That’s just my hot take of the day. Lol
    PS: “I learned recently by me calling everyone stupid all the time is a sign of arrogance and grandiosity.”
    This made me laugh out loud 😂 Same. I’ve been doing that since I was 17-18 and I just learned this last year. I’m 31. It’s because I genuinely believe I’m that much smarter than everyone. That’s why people are annoyed with my haughtiness and arrogance. I’m not mad about it, hell, I’d be butthurt too if I were as dumb as them and had to deal with someone like me 😆

      I get what you’re saying but it depends. Those “karens” mayyyy be showing traits of narcissism but that doesn’t mean they are narcissistic. Narcissism is pervasive over ALL relationships- friends, family, romantic relationships, work, etc. it’s all consuming and it can’t go away. We just learn how to manage those extreme beliefs when we are in a state to acknowledge our insight into the condition

    What is the best way to support a person with npd?

    • @MonicaDG
      @MonicaDG 3 месяца назад +6

      Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries!! Clear communication, try not to buckle under the pressure/work to not take it personally, and most of all, compassion. Depending on the degree of narcissism a person has, there may be some wiggle room to get through to their softer side with compassion (but be aware of manipulation- this coming from someone who does this)
