Young kids, 8-12 years old, hanging out doing normal kid stuff, and some gang member offers them easy money to help them sell. Most of the kids are too young to know any better, and the ones who do, they just wait until their mom gets sick just like Keontay's, because then even a good kid who knows better is hard-pressed not to do it when their mom is sick, their landlord is knocking on their door, and there aren't any legitimate jobs they can do to help cover costs because there aren't any real businesses in their neighborhood. Get them when they're that young, and those gang members can basically guide them growing up to be exactly what they want them to be. It's a sick, vicious cycle, and I've always had huge respect for the guys I spoke to who got out of that life and were adamant in keeping their kids from falling down it.

The rest of the cast has mostly done a little bit of time and gotten out. Reverend Hood also lost his grandson to gun violence in 2023. Is this show cursed? I don't think it is.
