+Kuda Mangwe Because most reverends usually do good things for people. That coach kinda reminds me of that teacher from the movie Dangrous Minds. You don't see too many teachers and staff that cares so he stands out from the rest.
These people working for this school, coach in particular, makes me realize how petty my self absorption is and how meaningless my life is. I am literally brought to tears by the selflessness, compassion, and dedication of these people. Such a heart wrenching display of the best and worst of humanity butted up against each other.
You don't want people doing a job like this for the money. You need driven people who want to do good and you only get that through low wages/voluntary work.
Eric Stevens dude. I agree with most of what You said except on what you said about yourself feeling or being meaningless. You are not meaningless everyone has a purpose. Some people just do it differently
The coach is a light in the darkness. He looks to be at, or near retirement age, yet he still goes out there and tries to make a positive impact on these kids' lives. In case anyone would like to know: After the show ended cortez fell into a life of violence, drug dealing and street life, forcing him and his family to flee the city. Coach william had gotten laid off and burned through the majority of his savings, but he says he continues to see some of the kids on the west side. Crystal and her son(Rudy Andrew Sanchez II) sadly died on Friday September 28, 2018. Spanky (montreal almond) got arrested just this year. And lastly, keontay was shot and killed. This is all the information I found for the people that wanted an update.
I was in foster care, had to experience sexual and physical abuse. Was a victim to drug abuse and was told time and time again by society that I would end up on the streets. I just graduated as Valedictorian of my high school and am now attending a super prestigious school in the US. This was all possible bc of the love I got later in my life. That coach is pretty much an angel in the form of a human. He has to have such a good heart to do take that much abuse from some of those kids yet he still does so much for them and dedicates so much of his life to helping them.
I think it was so nice that the Rev bought a X-Mas tree and presents for the family. The coach goes above and beyond for these kids. He should get a award from the Mayor or Governor of Chicago.
There are teachers like this in every school in the country. I have watched my colleagues buy presents for kids and their families to brighten their holidays. I always keep a stash of cereal bars in my desk for the kids who come in hungry. Every single teacher buys school supplies at the beginning of the year and quietly slips them to the kids who can't afford them. This always comes out of our paychecks. It doesnt matter if our kids disrespect us, curse at us, or even swing at us. They are our babies and we won't give up on them. Couldn't agree with the coach more. If we don't care about them, who will.
The problem is really at home she needs to move to a more suitable home for her because if she doesn't want to tell them anything about home it's something bad going on and I think her mama gave her drugs or something I have seen cases like this before
She had bipolar in adolescence, the spitting, the provoking for negative attention. All very very typical. It can take a lifetime to find the right combination of medication and cognitive therapy to stabilise. She has promise and confidence. She knows who she is and that will take her far.

@@charlesey_ i don't know the exact reason but I believe it was because the school ran out of money and was low on staff. I searched up the address of the school and i thinks its a daycare or something like that right now.
@@tubester4567 that is not completely true, a school can be doing well academically and still have issues with raising money for supplies, property taxes, staff payroll, etc. Why else do you think schools have fundraisers all the time? You saying that they shut down because they perform badly and failing the kids is quite ignorant, thats like me saying that every restaurant that isn't 5 stars gets shut down because they are failing or not meeting the expectations on others. Not every student choses to graduate, its not the schools fault, the blame is on the student, the student decides whether they graduate and live a better life, or drop out and end up either working a minimum wage job for the rest of their life or becoming homeless and doing drugs. A school will not shut down just because the students are choosing to not care, this school shut down because of lack of funding, no supplies, lack of staff members to even teach the students, and most likely terrible teaching conditions. The school will not fail a student that is willing to put in the work to be better, but a lot of students just dont care, and you want to blame the school before even realizing that the student doesn't even care.
"Why do you care so much for these kids?" "Somebody got to. I don't know. Long as the Lord let me. When he stop me, I'm through all right. But until then, they get everything I got "
I really want this series to keep going. I want to know where these kids are now, whether Cortez bettered himself, how his father's re-trial is going, whether Spanky's speech has improved. This is an important series and I would love to see it continue.
MiA 〈33 There is no Cortez Shields in the IL Dept of Corrections, as of August 2015. That means either that he was released and his record cleared totally, or he has died.
She reminds me of myself. I went through a lot of trauma as a child, and that severely impacted me. I used to get so mad that I would flip tables, cuss out teachers and just leave school all together. My teachers never gave up on me and I graduated high school with honors.
can you give me any advice? I’m a new art therapist at a school and I work with a student who has a hard time being in class , doing her work, is upset most of the time , arrives to school late , shuts down when she is upset so she doesn’t talk , she does make art in her session.
these kids are damaged mentally , physically , and emotionally. i'm honestly glad they're placed here to get a better chance at life and improve their futures. i applaud all the teachers .
I mean...it kinda fucking is in the grand scheme of things. Ya know, if you had no education and minimum wage is like 7 bucks an hour and you have 4 mouths to fucking feed selling drugs wouldn't seem that horrible. Idk.
Another thing is that as I read the comments below me, it really shows how disgusting people can be. The comments are deplorable and the adults whom are making the comments about this child should be ashamed. Im sure most of you all are more than likely older than me making derogatory comments about a child. The child is out of order but as you can see this is a cycle. The school and the parent should have a plan to stop this erotic behavior but making evil comments about a kid won't help.
It's probably the most healthy to just ignore the offensive comments. Most of them are just trolling for a ruse, and the others are likely stupider then most of the kids going to this school. I know because I may or may not have made a few comments like them in the past. Also, if you hate what you read here, NEVER go to a place called /pol/. You may give yourself a heart attack.

There is a reason Spartan children where cast away when determined by elders that they were defective. Stop looking at this with feelings and look at this with logic. The majority of these children's behavior is already set in stone. This nature has to be corrected at a very early age or else you wont be able to pull that child up from the nose dive. I know everyone wants to see the good in children, but there is a core evil out there as well. That can infect very early and if not corrected right then and there, it is almost impossible to correct. Most of these children will be thieves, murderers and just plain bad. Most will circulate through the justice system and only a few will self right. Ask yourself what the overall success rate of STAR or other child discipline programs are? Ask yourself how many end up with children/pregnant before 20, how many stay out of jail/prison until 25? The answer is very little to almost none. America is too liberal to correct this problem. It needs to he harsh and swift. you need to not pussy around with bad seeds to get results. Most of those children in those videos wont be doctors or lawyers, hell most wont even have a trade. Stop kidding everyone and look at the facts. Do not use feelings or pull out anecdotal evidence.
These teachers really are fantastic human beings. They genuinely care about their students and are trying to make a difference in their lives. Teaching is not a glamourous job and the commitment that these teachers have surpasses my university professors. The ignorant comments on these videos illustrate the disregard and ignorance of mental health and disorders. Mental health and well being is a very serious concern and these teachers are trying to help their students through these difficulties. I've read a lot of negativity towards these student's futures and this is a huge part of the problem. I don't have the experience of growing up in an environment surrounded by gang violence and poverty, for which I'm lucky, but I'll never condone any shaming of people who are trying to make the best of their situation and help others through it. They are trying to build a better society, and by insulting them and telling them their efforts are worthless you are in no way a contributing member of society, the ignorant trash you believe you're not. Secondly. while VICE has some articles and videos that may not pertain to you, be it you find it too biased or stupid, their news articles and documentaries are extremely informative and relevant to events that are going on in the world. Coverage of Ukraine, Turkey, Brazil, Syria, and more are all important issues that need to be documented and shared. The world isn't a great place sometimes, but if we ignore what is going on in it then it would be a terrible place.
11:43 my eyes got a little misty i can’t lie. The first episode i thought he was a asshole for the altercation with that little boy but soon after, i realized that man is one of the most beautiful souls there.
Doctor Dollars How can they be out for the summer? in this episode it was Christmas time, so they would have to have been 6 months until shool was out for the summer
Man I'm going to miss these kids. Their stories, progress, and wellbeing now matters to me. I think this documentary was fantastic. Unbiased, raw, and accomplished its goal. That is, to raise awareness and make us care. That's it. This isn't for entertainment even if it is entertaining. If you now care about this issue, the documentary was a success. Also, I have to point out that the beginning of this episode was beautiful. They were being kids. The slow motion and camera perspective combined with the rap track made it fun. Great job! And that coach has a true pure heart.
Iriel sister is in jail. Her mom was in jail, and now we expect this mom to raise this child correctly? Some of these kids don't even have a chance for real
most do. there is only so much a teacher can do. they have to fight against, toxic society/culture/music/friends and home environment. wish people would hold the parents more responsible
I think if there were more fathers on this earth like that coach, a lot of these kids wouldn't be in the situations that they're in. What a truly inspirational man.
Iriel Spann, the girl from the beginning has unfortunately followed down a troubled path. She was shot two months ago through the buttock while sitting in a car. Iriel was pregnant and the bullet pierced her unborn child and she lost it. She’s also had several arrest. So sad how a bad start can really compromise a child’s prospects and outcomes in life.
AND BY HER SAYING IT'S NOT YALL BIZ WHAT HAPPENS AT HOME IS THE WORK OF HER MOTHER.. her og probably told her dont tell them shit about what goes on here or you'll be taken away..
What’s is sad is looking up these kids 9 years later and seeing that they did not change. Iriel got arrested, shot and lost a baby while pregnant. Cortez serving 25 sentence.
These kids are hurting they are living in poverty they need love and a chance. I respect every Teacher at that School. Interesting concept why don't all them rappers these kids idolize who rap about gangs and guns donate some of there Millions to this School? Yeah right.

If you went through 9 lives before the age of 8 you would probably act that way too. I am not condoning all of it, but some of it is environmental, some of it is bad parenting, low income, mental illness and forced educational system/government agenda bs. Not all parents that struggle want or need bad shyt for their kids either. A lot are left single parents, come from abuse, kids born or have kids born themselves addicted to drugs and or alcohol, exposed to horrific circumstances and other schools will just kick you out, arrest you and or restrain, suspend and segregate you. Some schools like this suck, because than inclusive is all they have, never experiencing normality. But than Coach and Rev are there and they really seem like they have a good heart. The kids cant always help their meltdowns. When people touch them, especially ones not trained properly to do CPI, it can set them off worse. When the kids go home, most often the families don't even continue the same support, so than the kids have no consistency. It is a hard cycle and circle.
Vote for a season 2 here! I defianently hope that Vice News will make a season two of "Last Chance High", so let them see how much this show is wanted by the viewers.
*I know the school has been closed since 2016 and it's been 6 years but can y'all please do an update on all the kids? it would be interesting to see where they're doing now*
Damn, shows how a bad home environment can change someone as young as the girl. She's like 11 or 12 and she already doesn't trust others and obviously has a lot of pent up anger about someone at home. Because the person who scares her at home is a terrible parent who probably screams and beats her child, the kid is terrified and grows up thinking people are all like that, she's so scared of the person at home that she won't tell anyone else what's happening because she fears retaliation. The only people she can let some steam out is the educators and they really do a stellar job. Athletes, politicians and fucking movie actors get all the attention and money. Whilst the REAL HEROES of society are educators who are raising a generation because their parents obviously aren't doing shit. And these educators get shit pay and the only media attention they ever get is about how teachers unions are free-loading off the government. WAKE THE FUCK UP PEOPLE. EDUCATORS AT ALL LEVELS SHAPE HOW SOCIETY WILL BE IN 20 YEARS.
***** That was the first thing I thought too... someone is abusing this girl in some shape or form... That answer and insistence on not talking about home-life was too explicit to ignore.

These people working for this school, coach in particular, makes me realize how petty my self absorption is and how meaningless my life is. I am literally brought to tears by the selflessness, compassion, and dedication of these people. Such a heart wrenching display of the best and worst of humanity butted up against each other.
I couldn't have said it better m8. I'm with u. Those teachers should be paid VERY well
You don't want people doing a job like this for the money. You need driven people who want to do good and you only get that through low wages/voluntary work.
Very well said

The coach is a light in the darkness. He looks to be at, or near retirement age, yet he still goes out there and tries to make a positive impact on these kids' lives. He knows that the odds are heavily stacked against them, but it doesn't stop him from trying. This man deserves everything good that comes his way. Bless him.

After the show ended cortez fell into a life of violence, drug dealing and street life, forcing him and his family to flee the city.
Amen, these are the best kind of people. People like coach literally save lives. If that doesn't earn an award, I don't know what does.

@@TheHeisenbird why
@@charlesey_ i don't know the exact reason but I believe it was because the school ran out of money and was low on staff. I searched up the address of the school and i thinks its a daycare or something like that right now.
@@TheHeisenbird These schools get shut down when they are performing badly and failing the kids.

***** Probably meant erratic.
Do not use feelings or pull out anecdotal evidence.
mmmm i agree with you her behavior is so erotic
Roman Dykyj

God bless you.
Its rare to find an intellagent comment on these videos, thank you

man being bipolar must suck!
Yeah I know.
