Moms raising kids from prison

  • The women’s state prison population in the United States has grown 834% since 1978. More than half of these women are mothers to children under the age of 18. Separation after incarceration leaves families severely impacted and children traumatized. But, support systems do exist that allow women to keep a connection with their children. Jeesoo spent time with Taliah, Sarah, and Kamilah who are each participating in programs that help them keep a relationship with their kids. This helps the child’s mental health and lowers the chance that these women will return to prison.

    What hit me the hardest was when the little girl asked her mother to guess how old she was. Usually that's a question you ask a stranger who isn't in your life that much to know things like your birthday. But even at her young age, you expect your mom to know how old you are. So the fact she thought her own mom didn't know is heartbreaking. Brought me to tears.

      Emily Grd look at the big picture it goes for male and female. It’s a circle of life their parents was in jail they don’t know how to live why put someone in jail help them. A lot of black people are lost in life because it’s a circle of their family goes to jail. All the jail and prison is doing is making money off them it’s sad but I hope god heal and deliver every one that’s crying and lost that needs helps

    • @teacup5435

      Sweet life of Candice it’s not just black people, it’s all of them. I’m black but my mother raised me properly, my mother had/and STILL HAS people she loves in jail. My mother’s brothers were murdered and she could’ve tried to kill the person who killed her brothers but she didn’t. I get your point but yes, they need to serve their time.
      Of course, while serving their time, they have to learn that they are doing something wrong and that they can be much better versions of themselves. As in the previous comment, some of these people were abused as children and don’t know that certain things like that are bad.
      I really hope all these women and their kids are safe and sound and that they don’t go back to jail.

    Here's my story.
    Starts off on my oldest biological sister Michelle. When she was born she was addicted to meth, heroin and various other drugs. Of course that means drugs were being used/injected while Michelle was in mama's stomach. She made it out safe of her mom, then here comes Jessica, my biological sister who is older then me but younger then Michelle. She was also born addicted to drugs, same drugs as Michelle was addicted to. Michelle raised Jessica for about 5 years. And during that time Michelle taught herself how to change a diaper, how to clean up, how to make simple stuff to eat, how to take baths (using water/hose). You have to realize this lasted all the way up until Michelle was 5 years old. Jessica was maybe 1 years old, just now turning 1 years old. Then I along, addicted to meth, heroin and various drugs. My heart stopped when I was born about 3 times, doctors saved me everytime. Amen to that. I was born blue, because of the drugs that were in my body upon birth. Here comes National Adoption Month. My biological Aunt Ellie told the parents I have now about us. I was 30 days old, when I was finally adopted out. My biological mom never held me. She wasn't allowed to, after Aunt Ellie knew that I was going to be the moms 3rd baby. CPS finally took Michelle & Jessica away. Foster home.. My parents were allowed to adopt us wayy before the usual time it takes to adopt a kid, background screening, id, records, trainings, cpr, first aid etc. I was bullied up to 5th grade about being adopted which I now look back notice how stupid those kids actually sound. They're "making fun" of me for something wonderful. I was given a chance. So it's wonderful that God put this oppurtunity into my parents hands. So I know what it feels to be raised without your parents... and barely seeing them if ever seeing them. God bless you all and thank you for reading this if you did! 👀💗

    I actually went through this growing up. My mom was back and forth in prison all my life for drugs and prostitution. What's worse is I still don't know who my dad is and I am 23 now. When it was said that daughters need their mothers I started crying because me growing up without my mother hurts. I actually felt like she didn't love me and that is why she kept doing drugs and selling her body. At least these mothers want to change. I hope these ladies do what they have to keep their kids. It would be a terrible feeling knowing that your kids are all grown up and still want to know why you don't love them any more. :'(

    I wish Taliyah would not have told her son he hurt her feelings. This has the potential to make him feel guilty, that is, make him feel he did something wrong. All he is doing is reacting to a situation that was thrust upon him by his mom. I am sure he loves her unconditionally as children do.

    • @maggiebee5060
      @maggiebee5060 5 лет назад +11

      hope_revjfg Smith Taliyah grew up with a mother that was using drugs. She had no life guide. It is her fault that she keeps going back to jail but telling your mother that you don’t love her, that hurts, she doesn’t deserve this, it’s not an excuse. The situation is that the mom needs help and support. He did something wrong yes. It’s not his fault that she is in there, but he doesn’t need to react that way. It’s horrible for the poor mother struggling with her problems.
