I was also fortunate to attend school in a safe district in a safe neighborhood. I did see one fist fight in high school while I was eating lunch, I ate by myself almost every day and it was hard mentally. I would be ridiculed sometimes by other students because I was a little different socially than most of them. To my right, two girls just started going at it out of nowhere. Security had to be called in and of course the fight ended up on Snapchat (WHICH I DO NOT USE!!). The lunch aides were powerless to stop the fight. That’s the only fight I remember seeing in high school.
For many of those students who get in trouble at school and with the law, it's not necessarily they are "bad" kids. Many of them, given their living and family conditions, don't have positive role models to look up to, hence the cycle of violence and aggression is allowed to continue. I give my time to volunteer with students in after school programs at an inner city school in my community and while I cannot fix their home and family problems, I'm grateful to be able to connect with them and provide them with a positive role model they can look up to and relate with. It's proven that youth who have positive role models are more likely to succeed in school and are less likely to get in trouble with the law. Now if only after school programs would stop ending up on the chopping block for government funding because these programs really work. I have major respect for that principal, and I feel so proud to work (volunteer) with at-risk children in my community.
I'm in tears. I'm a teacher, and these are the kind of teachers and principals we need. People who truly love and care about the well being of these kids❤️ so much respect for what she is doing
+Tash Kay I believe she's going to be successful. As long as she doesn't let those kids get to her which I'm sure that's a lot of the reason why her grades are slipping, but she seems so be a smart girl and if she keeps her head straight the way she's been doing, I'm sure to go far.
I thought it was incredibly wise when little boy said “I use my words” to protect himself. Kids like him had to grow up a lot faster then most kids just to survive in this cruel world. I pray he is safe and hopefully in college.

It's sad, there's genuinely good kids just trying to learn, surrounded by a horrible environment. Kids shouldn't be feeling scared by simply going to school. It's tragic.
Its a horrible statistic for sure but I don't think it's as cut and dry as it looks. You never know what's happening behind the scenes. How many of those kids even have parents vs grandparents who might not be able to make the trip, or how about a single mom whose working three jobs. I'm sure there are more parents who want to be there but can't for whatever reason. No one wants to live in poverty..
That's what Bengal is saying. So many single parents, non existent parents. Almost all of these problems kids have start at home. They need more attention beyond school hours.
That’s so sad that only one parent showed up for parent/teacher conference. It hurt my heart because I’m a parent and it makes me want to take care of these kids
"Out of his 70 students, only 1 parent shows up". This nightmare is almost all due to the breakdown of the black family. These kids NEED parents who love them enough to discipline them and keep them on the right track.
Boomer: The apocalypse is coming hide in ur shelters and be prepared hiding for the next 15 years trump won not Biden the earth is going to explode literally
I grew up in neighbourhoods like this. What I found is, a lot of times, these parents work low-paying jobs that require them to work many hours to make ends meet so they can’t be around enough to discipline or bond with them, or the parents are struggling with substance abuse due to trauma that they don’t have support through. For example, knew a single mom that worked her ass off to help her 3 kids after her husband died. Then her oldest kid got shot and she fell into depression, couldn’t be there mentally or financially for her other 2. But that was one of many examples. yes, there are many parents that have the ability to but fail to take ownership and discipline properly. But many more who are stuck in a broken system who can’t get out for many reasons. And it’s generational. It’s tough for kids who didn’t have parents around to then know how to parent when they have kids. It’s also tough for parents to know what to do when you see kids that were over-disciplined by scared strict parents, and kids that were not disciplined at all, both end up in jail, on the streets, or dead, due to external reasons. At that point, it becomes tough for a parent to know if it was due to internal or external reasons and end up not knowing how to parent/practice inconsistent parenting. Thankfully, I was only in those neighbourhoods for a few years as my parents were immigrants living there as they built themselves here, but I could see how people could easily get stuck there! It’s a complex situation that requires a lot of empathy....
I break down probably at least once a week after school. I have anxiety and I always feel like school eats away my life and is just some test for my mental health that I never seem to pass. I don’t see how it will stop but honestly, this video made me a little more grateful for what I have. I don’t feel safe in school, but for some reason now I feel safer
Hey, i understand what you're feeling is hard, and it is very valid! You can and you will get through all of it. You will finally stop having breakdowns someday, you will finally feel happy you went through all of that yourself, feel proud of yourself, because you are so much more than just your anxiety and your tears, just pull through okay, everything will be better someday. I promise. And no, I don't think you should drop out "cause your weak" or "weaker than anybody else", school is honestly difficult, but it can lead us to a good future. Just find what "the thing" you can do that makes you happy, and grow and learn from there. Hope you feel better soon, love, please take care of yourself!

What a great principal....telling those kids they're loved...you know most of them prolly didn't hear that before she said it. It's sad cause you know she wants the best for all of them but the odds just aren't in their favor.
That's why i'm studying hard in investing and business, i want to become so rich i can pay their deposits and give them a chance to get out of that neighborhood and raise healthy families of their own.
That's why she is working so hard. She knows that she & the people in that school are for some kids the only resource to improve their lives. Most parents want more for their kids but they don't always have the means to make that happen & I can't imagine how hard that must be. Too many schools administrators even in high performing schools are too quick to give up on their students esp ones that are more difficult cases (discipline issues, academically struggling, special needs, families with limited means or home issues, etc) because they don't think they can help. Giving up on a child is the worst thing you can do as an educator, because that tells them they are not worth the time so why should they try if those whose job is to help them won't? This makes me so sad but it is a good feeling to know people like this woman are still out there. I wish all of these kids nothing but the best for their lives and their loved ones
"How can the most dangerous school in America be called 'Strawberry Mansion'. It sounds like an ice cream shop." How can Philadelphia be called the City of Brotherly Love? Filled with hate.
The school building is good, and the district pours a lot of money towards these kids. Unfortunately, the fights, absences, drug use, and bad grades are often symptoms of unstable family life. Malaysia is one of the only kids who has a good and caring dad at home, and she gets bullied for being smart. I hope she finds success in life!
These poor mothers fall for a guy not fit for anything but making more babies and running are trying to raise them in horrible conditions. Most don’t have a prayer. Why do they live there? There are places where they can raise these kids in safety. It do sent take that much!
It’s so sad because at that age you don’t even know you’re being bullied because they are jealous of what you have in her case intelligence and a caring father. High school kids can be so cruel to each other.
I am the same age as him, this happened 6 months prior to them releasing this video, it is even stated in the video early. He is supposed to be a freshman in college right now. Man, I thought my school was ghetto, I take that back because even though my school needed the swat team to come and fix a huge fight, this in Chicago by the way, no not suburbs but actual south westside, this is more than just an everyday occurrence. I'm in school right now and I have sort of taken it for granted but these kids that actually want an education are going to be the good adults in the future.
The fact the principal volunteers there and has enough heart to tell them she loves them everyday before they go home is AMAZING. She needs more recognition than just this
+Robin Rastenberger she needs a principal.. I'll trade my HS principal -- the dragon who never sleeps.. She even asked to cut the trees around and inside school grounds so she'll know if someone will jump over the fences to cut class.
broken homes with broken kids fighting their way through life... the government needs to start doing their damn job and look through the state and find schools like this and help
Help what? It's the students that make it a bad school, the school itself is fine, the teachers/principal shown are great. Do you want the government to step in and parent their kids for them? Like?
Similar to what the person above me said - their parents are the problem clearly. 1 out of 70 is terrible and it shows they probably don’t care. You should t always turn to the government because it can’t think of a reasonable answer. ( or refuse to find one )
Pim 3 things First, this school is primarily made of black students, and 57.6% of black children don’t have fathers. ( www.fathers.com/statistics-and-research/the-extent-of-fatherlessness/ ) therefore they’re already lacking a extra role model / teacher to learn maturity from. Secondly, I seriously hope you believe that this is Donald trumps fault because that would make you even dumber. This was posted in 2013, when precious Obama was in office. So don’t try and claim that. Thirdly, you expect the government to help every single person there? That’s unrealistic. I don’t even see how the situation affects how violent they are at school other than that maybe they don’t have any parental figures. But either way have you never thought about how costly it would be to help them? I am arguing but I’m willing to hear your opinion as long as you’re being civil and using facts, not feelings.
Don't blame the government because you're poor. Stop trying to get the government to give you hand outs and fix your life. Do it your damn self. Anybody can make money in America. Them being poor is nobodies fault but theirs. The government isn't going to change so change yourself. You wanna make it out of poverty? Go out there and make money. Go to school. Pick a skill and practice till it kills you.
It so funny because we have good schools with bad principals or not nearly as good as that principal. truly she is a blessing in disguise for those kids. I hope they all have a bright future ahead of them.
maybe they try to make the best principles in the worst schools so they can make a change. the good schools might have shitty principals since they aren't really need that badly
This almost brought me to tears. These children are products of their environments and the odds are stacked against them. My daughter was being bullied several years ago and while I gave her all the tools I could think to give to combat it, I also instilled compassion and empathy in her. I explained to her that many times the kids who are bullies come from broken and troubled homes and are hurting other people because they themselves are hurting inside. That really helped her a lot and thankfully she overcame it. Here in Florida where I live, they have a summer time free lunch program where you can bring your children to public libraries and other places each weekday to receive a free lunch. The reason why they run this program is because there are so many children who’s only meal for the day is what they eat at school so in the summer without this program, many children go hungry. I immediately thought of this when I saw nothing but a small pot of potatoes cooking for dinner in this boy’s bedroom. That was just so sad. As much money that this country has, this should never be. While I understand people’s passion in wanting to help starving children and endangered animals in other countries, I wish we all fully understood and grasped the misfortune that people are experiencing right here on American soil.

Carturtle 11 your fucking lucky you dont have to go to school there

I thought it was incredibly wise when little boy said “I use my words” to protect himself. Kids like him had to grow up a lot faster then most kids just to survive in this cruel world. I pray he is safe and hopefully in college.
To Cinthya: It's hard to learn in a bad atmosphere. The only thing going is grades and points. Students will never learn information to project with style and appreciation -- in the school's "projects."
The only hope -- is to become a syllabus soaking sponge. Forget the triteness of art, the art of public speaking, and classical music -- this will not soothe the surrounding savages.

"If no one told you they loved you just remember I do" That is what so many young kids and teens to hear. The principal has a heart of gold.
I had a teacher tell me she loved us every day and that really got me through middle school. I tried harder for her than anybody
"Out of his 70 students, only 1 parent shows up".
This nightmare is almost all due to the breakdown of the black family. These kids NEED parents who love them enough to discipline them and keep them on the right track.
@Oscar Grouch biden "you aint even black" wont be much better lol
Black children NEED both parents.
@Anonymous they can have both simultaneously?

That's why i'm studying hard in investing and business, i want to become so rich i can pay their deposits and give them a chance to get out of that neighborhood and raise healthy families of their own.
i know :( she's an amazing person and i wish more of these kids had a better chance

Jeez, I thought the high school I went to was bad but this is a whole other level. It helps us appreciate what we have.
It do sent take that much!

broken homes with broken kids fighting their way through life... the government needs to start doing their damn job and look through the state and find schools like this and help
Pim
3 things
First, this school is primarily made of black students, and 57.6% of black children don’t have fathers.
Sad, but the Government is most likely already helping.
😶 Poor Malaysia.

What an amazing woman!
She is a beautiful principal, and the young kid is super bright, this makes me sad and frustrated

Battledragonsawesome I know that, I was an exchange student there for 2 years in high school, she’s not bloody in the British term nor the American term,
That girl has a father in her life. That's why she is so different from the rest
Agreed
True a strong father figure does make a difference in a child's life but a good mother can control their child and take the place of both parents if necessary

darius reedo ladies and gentleman if can just simply throw my two cents in; there is no institutional racism in this country. There is equal opportunity in this country not equal outcome and that’s what people fail to grasp in this wonderful country. Now in the past there was slavery, and Jim Crow; mistakes have been made in this country’s past, it’s been acknowledged, we as a nation have learned from these mistakes and thus propelled ourselves into this day and age that we live in.
Francisco Garcia i think i understand what you mean. there arent racist laws in America anymore, but that doesnt mean racism doesnt exist at all, e.g. my father, who has worked hard for over half his life, was told he was lazy because he was hispanic - ironic because the man telling him that had never worked a day in his life, yet here he was judging my dad for his race & skin color. thanks for commenting bro, it made me think. have a great day :)
darius reedo that doesnt make someones actions okay, but yea, youre right.

Adults always blaming kids for being aggressive. Makes me sad that they won't just admit that the real problem isn't bad kids but bad adults
They are all victims of a dysfunctional socio-economic environment - the aggressive kids are just reacting to their circumstances.
parents working hard jobs and both are catching hell to support thier kids living this society and sometimes thier kids don't follow orders from thier adult parents, etc, that's when hell breake lose in family values, that doesn't make them bad adults +The Great Burrito
The Great Burrito bad adults in politics and board of directors in corporations
I think it's both...
Im sick of people always blaming adults. Yes, most occasions are the parents fault, but not all. My parents and brother loved me dearly, they were there with me 24/7 giving me as much love possible but I chose the wrong path MYSELF. Dealing withh drugs, juvenille, school problems and all that bravado. I got bullied so much that I thought that was my only way out but I saw the pain my family had and decided to change before it was too late. And no, it was not small bullying it was all 7 schools of my life, tortured physically, mentally by even teachers at the time, being sexually harassed and things like that, having no friends and all that crap. Please stop saying its all parents fault when it is not, children are just mentally disturbed sometimes and are sick who need help.

I know Malaysia dad is trying to keep her focused but man I sure hope he holds her and reassures her of her feelings and fear etc . She goes to school everyday in a war zone literal prison. I cried so hard for these kids that got college offers but don't have the few hundred to secure the spot. Life just isn't fair.
I feel like some spoiled upper-middle class kid that whines about going to school everyday when I see this.
Same
+Monkacornoo! Behaviors like this are due mainly to the societal effects of ELEVATED LEAD LEVELS. That area of Philly has levels higher than Flint, Michigan.

My town has an %80 poverty rate, and 300 kids K-12. We have a lot of civil conflicts, but I REALLY admire the principal in this video.

Hats off to this principal and the students who see beyond the unimaginable daily battles they face. Keep striving students and embrace your principal’s love for you all!
To CW: The only hope -- is to become a student syllabus soaking sponge. Forget the triteness of art, the art of public speaking, and classical music -- this will not soothe the surrounding savages.
Starts from the home. You got dead beat parents, you get dead beat kids 99% of the time

Bruh this got me crying!! Where the smartest kids love being in school and some are trying their hardest but can’t afford getting into that degree
It seems like there are some people in this school with potential. It's sad that this school has actually gotten worse, and the attendance has gone way down.
How u know
4:21, I feel her pain on such a deep level. I can’t even begin to tell you the immense amount of stress so many kids who are hard on themselves have been through. It’s honestly unimaginable how she feels because she not only is extremely careful about her grades and how she carries herself, but now has to be careful about just simple things. Things like walking around or talking to others in the school. 💜💜💜
Look what i said
Strawberry Mansion. Now Playing in theaters.

why?
I honestly broke down and started crying watching this because even though I never grew up in a situation like this my heart truly breaks for every single one of those kids. Not once single person should have to go through what they have to go through. I wish I had all the money in the world so I could change all those kids' lives
Same kinda felt weird for crying
Oh my God what is up with these kids in this century? What are the parents malfunction? What goes around inside in their homes? This makes me cry! 😢😢😢
