- In Episode Three, Montreal "Spanky" Almond reveals some of the trauma that may have caused him to lose his voice, and endure endless bullying. Coach Williams reaches out hoping to make a difference in the boy's life.
On Chicago's West Side, there is a school for the city's most at-risk youth - the Moses Montefiore Academy. Most of the students at Montefiore have been kicked out of other schools for aggressive behavior, and many have been diagnosed with emotional disorders.
Last Chance High takes viewers inside Montefiore's classrooms and into the homes of students who are one mistake away from being locked up or committed to a mental hospital.

The Coach, Frank Williams, from 'Last Chance High' was fired after they decided to "move"(read:close) the school in that area. The board of education(seeing the state the school was in) stopped sending more kids, and the remaining groups began to age out. Williams says he was initially told in July 2015 that the school wasn't closing, just moving. But he was given the pink slip anyway.
Afterwards, his son Frank Williams .Jr fell ill but after a long stay at the hospital he received new life through his heart transplant on Thursday, July 13, 2017.
Mr. Williams struggled to pay for his sons hospital stay and couldn't really retire and had to keep working over the age of 65. I couldnt find what he's doing today.
His son is alright though.

Yes, I agree. Whenever Spanky is asked: “What’s the one thing in your life that has positively impacted you”. Or if he’s asked, “Who is the person that has changed your life”, I’m almost positive that Spanky will answer that his coach taking him to his first basketball game has left a positive and meaningful impact on him. I know this series is several years old, so I hope all of the kids are doing well and are happy!

After the show ended cortez fell into a life of violence, drug dealing and street life, forcing him and his family to flee the city. Coach william had gotten laid off and burned through the majority of his savings, but he says he continues to see some of the kids on the west side. Crystal and her son(Rudy Andrew Sanchez II) sadly died on Friday September 28, 2018. Spanky (montreal almond) got arrested just this year. And lastly, keontay was shot and killed. This is all the information I found for the people that wanted an update.

If Spanky was a psychopath he would not have trauma induced speech loss. It is clearly evident that he was severely impacted by almost losing his sisters. Some of these psychologists/psychiatrists only want to quickly diagnose people.
I'm pretty sure what they're saying is he's faking it, he's psychopathic, set his house on fire, and is now faking a speech impediment for attention and all the bonuses that come with it.
I mean sure the fire could be accidental, but he's taking it for a ride.
They're not saying he has trauma induced speech loss because he's a psychopath, those are two different things. They most likely did multiple tests and gathered that he is a psycopath and surmised that he is probably faking the impediment too.

It seems unlikely that he intentionally tried to kill his sisters. He would have to be EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT at that age to know that he can probably avoid any punishment and get sympathy through faking a trauma-induced speech impediment. Mostly kids just lie to avoid punishment, they don't freaking think to themselves "I'm going to make myself stutter to fool everyone!" That just sounds ridiculous to me. He probably doesn't even know the definition of the word "trauma", yet comprehend well enough to use something like that to his advantage. Be realistic here, please. If he was that smart, he would've found a way to deal with his murderous father that constantly beats his family.

camdevtube I could be wrong, but after taking several psych classes I remember learning that Psychopaths are characterized by their extreme intelligence. Its a trait that comes with being what you are. I'm sure we'd all be really surprised of how aware this kid is.

Actually, psychopaths (officially antisocial personality disorder) are just manipulative, not necessarily intelligent. So I agree that it's unrealistic that he would think of such an elaborate plan instead of just lying. Also, you cannot be Dx'd with AsPD before your late teens. Officially you're not supposed to Dx it before 18 but some docs Dx at 16. He's too young to have a personality disorder. At most he could have conduct disorder.
Seeing the coach actually take spanky out of his toxic house and spends time with him and learns why his speech isn’t right is a speacial moment cuz it shows the coach cares about him besides the other teachers

The fact that this school shut down two years after this and a lot of students ended up committing crimes is so saddening to me.
Literally it’s so depressing, like nothing worked out. I’m happy Spanky graduated from HS. But we don’t know what he’s up to now. Overall it’s a sad situation.

The guilt he feels from that mistake he made, and the love he held for his sisters. Now seeing them with the markings of his mistake, this is how he lost his voice; from the guilt and regret of an irreversible mistake. Specially for a child this guilt stains the heart.

I barely ever cry but these episodes about Spanky is making me bawl. This kid's life, he doesn't deserve all this anguish
The smoke from the fire probably caused his speech impediment, he is a good kid deep down but the actions portray him to be a psycho, which in reality he's just a kid who has minor disabilities and is not good with terrible situations. The fire thing was not a form of psychopathic tendencies, he was probably in a state of shock to where he didn't know how to handle the situation. In the video he says he feels bad about the fire, that shows he has emotions and regret for his actions. I hope I see the lil homie on a magazine somewhere playing ball or helping other kids who are like him overcome negativity

Thank you. I can't believe anyone would try to label that little boy a psychopath. Some people need to have their licenses revoked. Many adults would freeze if a fire broke out in their home. It's also sad that it sounds like no one was truly watching him. Children cannot be left alone, curiosity and idleness can get them into a world of trouble.
They are always quick to label poor disadvantage youth. Parents have to learn not to accept the terminology and do their own investigation by sitting , talking and getting to know their kids.

Spanky doesn't belong in this school in my opinion, he should have been placed at a demonstration school instead (these school specialize in students with disabilities with tools on development). This school for extreme at-risk youth as you can tell is for those who are just defiant and are on the edge of being permently banned from education.
In other words, Spanky shouldn't have been placed with those who are at-risk. He needs a school meant for personal self-development and self-esteem boosting.

So far from what I've seen, Coach Williams is the only good thing about this school. The other teachers don't seem to give a crap and don't do much but recite lessons to the students. Coach Williams is the only one who actually seems to give a crap about the kids.

He is definitely one of the more passionate ones but it's really not fair to judge people from the first impressions of a documentary. This job is incredibly hard with kids disrespecting you and mentally tearing you down left and right but the fact that none of the staff have lost their patience and are still teaching shows how much they care about the kids that are in that class. This is not an easy job for anyone.
When I was a kid and i got emotionally overwhelmed and started crying i sounded exactly like spanky felt like your gasping for air and trying to talk at the same time. Hope he is doing better.
The way Spanky talks has manifested from the trauma of his sister, who was burned from the fire he set...how she could barely talk. The mother mimicked the sound when her daughter was recovering. Although he didn't/couldn't express at the time his feelings, he is now suffocating with guilt and pain of almost taking the lives of his sisters. He really needs therapy ASAP to address his trauma.

I am not gonna lie, this brought tears to my eyes. We can all learn from Coach Williams, He set this kid straight by showing him a bit of love he never got previously. Small deeds from ordinary people, that makes this life worth living.
He's a kid. He froze with fear when something happened that he didn't understand. I've met people with antisocial personality disorders and children with conduct disorders. He doesn't fit the bill at all. This is conversion disorder following extreme trauma.

Wow, I thought the same exact thing. Coach Williams seems like he would be a great father figure for "Spanky" but you've got to acknowledge the role he plays at his own home watching after his two sisters (and mother).

All I want for Spanky is the world. He has this spark inside him despite from all the trauma he’s been through and continues to. I wish his mother was more nurturing towards him, he is a very special boy.
And I believe the fire incident was not his fault. He is not a psychopath. The mother is at fault for this incident. How did he get the lighter? Poor supervision.
This is such a good example of how you should treat at-risk kids, he introduced him to something he'd knew he'd like, and treats him with kindness and understand, and giving advice when needed.

I know exactly how Spanky feels. When I went to the first grade, I became a stutterer. I've been made fun of for years and to top it off, no one wanted to be my friend and if I did make any friends it'd be like VERY few. It got to a point where where my mom would yell at me because I'd try to tell her something and she wouldn't understand me. It made me too scared to even talk to someone because I was scared to be made of. Years has passed where my stuttering slowly went away and I had speech therapy and it's helped me a lot. I wasn't as shy as before but I am quite though. Guys, I know it's strange for people to talk like that but PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE AND BE NICE.!😭
I stuttered When I was a kid but my mom sad talk with a mirror in front of you. That really helped

Lifes not fair; these kids never had a choice in being born. It's so strange how so many will easily condemn these kids (im not saying you), but they had no choice to their circumstances. I bet if they had the chance, they would have said hell no to birth and die prematurely.
But here they are, broken and all. Society might despise them, but they deserve to claim their stake at living just like everyone else.

The way Spanky's voice gets choked up, its so familiar to me I feel as though I have experienced it in a dream when I was drowning trying to call for help. Probably not related but I have grown up dealing with anxiety for a lot of my life so it just came to mind.
This coach reminds me of my friend’s father’s coach. He always motivated him growing up and was a real mentor. Now the father has become a mentor to me, but he’s in the hospital now.
Jesus, I swear I want to do something seriously that can affect people like THIS directly whether it's donating money to something beneficial ANYTHING if for even a fuckin smile one of these kids faces.
