I feel this video showed the real Cortez. He is just a scared kid. Yea, he talks the talk and get into fights, but it's because he is afraid and insecure. With no father figure to protect him, he feels afraid and has to fend for himself. Truly heartbreaking. I can only imagine what he could become with some love and patience from a man in his life.

I don't think he's a bad kid either, typically when kids like him lash out they're just looking for attention. It's all about establishing that dominance in the pecking order. Usually a child's parent is at the top of theirs. Some kids could care less if they go to the principle, or cops but the minute you say I'm gonna call your parents, they usually chill their ass out and that's ONLY when the parent is at the top of their pecking order. However, if they have no dominate figure then they lash out.

Precious Lopez what I meant was emotionally disconnected. It could be the editing of the video, not knowing how long it took him to compose himself, but also the way they greeted each other, a quick little "street greet" or whatever... I'm not gonna pretend to know how they were feeling or know how awkward it was. I just hope this helps lil man understand and reign in his anger.

The talk he had with his dad made me shed a tear. I remember when I went to go see my dad when he was in prison. I had went to see him with my sister and his mom and dad for one of those visits where you get to eat and talk with the face to face. Family day event it was. I cried when it was time to leave. Seeing the walls close every foot step you take to get in and out is a crazy and unreal feeling even though it's all real. I remember me and my dad would write letters to one another, he'd always say that when he was gonna get out that he was gonna be there for me and my sister and my mom. But he never kept his word. It's sad that I don't know him like that, and when we run into each other it's always awkward. I seen him yesterday walking home and he gave me a hug and kiss, we chatted for like 5 minutes, and I went on my way. But what's sad is he told that same lie he always tells when he sees me or my sister, he always says "I'll be around the house Saturday, tell your mom I'm coming to see her." He said that yesterday and I shrugged my shoulders with a smirk. But I thank God that I had a mom who raised me right. Never been to jail, never been in any type of fights, never was one to run with the crowd. I've always stayed to myself even now as a 24 year old. All I needed was my mom, and she did the best she could, and I turned out great. I am forever thankful for her.

Generally, white men do not have such disadvantages in life as I am sure you do not have such disadvantages in life. You have no reason to be offended, why does it bother you if a random stranger on the internet doesn’t pray for you? She is a black woman and is more likely to feel empathy for these poor young black men who are so disadvantaged. Just because she said she’s praying for them doesn’t mean she automatically doesn’t care about any other race. Grow up and stop being a cry baby.

Serial killers: No, since they obviously have a mental illness which prison will not help, they should be in a maximum security mental institution to try and find a cure.
Repeated sex offenders: Repeaters, no, but sex offence is a wide gambit of crimes, which range from a mistake someone made when they were in their 20s with a 17 year old to a child molester. It is hardly a blanket crime.
Terrorists: Again, tricky, since terrorism is a very wide range of possible crimes. Someone who commits genocide obviously deserves the highest possible punishment, which would be death. Terrorists typically have a political agenda and believe they are waging a war against their oppressors. Whether they are right or not, war is always ugly.
I never said prison was useless. I just said that they system is broken if a system meant to help society destroys families and creates a terrible circle of crime.

I see him 50% of the time so I have nothing to complain but there are times when I don’t see him for a couple of weeks and watching this both breaks my heart and gives me strength. The moment when Cortez walks in and cries when seeing his son again for the first time in all those years is so powerful and pure. I wish they could see each other more often. It’s such a tragedy.

I felt this, my dad was locked up for 9 years (I was 3 and my little brother was 1). He wasn’t an absent father, he helped raise me and my lil bro through prison. Even though you’re father is PHYSICALLY there, he might not be there MENTALLY. My dad was there for us, we’d see him every 2 weeks if he was in a prison close to us. He’s been out for 3 years in May. It was a little tough not having my dad PHYSICALLY there. He was supposed to do 13 years but go out early, he missed out on my childhood. I’m 15 now and a sophomore, he missed out on certain things but that doesn’t mean we can’t create more memories in the future. Growing up without a dad took a toll on me emotionally and mentally. I don’t know if I can speak on my brothers behalf since he’s growing up with our dad in his kid years he’s in 8th grade now. I think my dad honestly thinks about the missed times he can’t get back. He wasn’t there for my first day of pre-school to 7th grade. He was there for 8th but that was already too late. My little brother was able to have our dad there for middle school and now for high school.

This was extremely sad and hard to watch, with him and his father talking. They're so disconnected the first few minutes with them only with each other was complete silence. From watching the father and the way he talks seems like it doesn't matter that he is not in his childs life. This young man needs a father figure but his dad isn't one. And why was he laughing about having murder and attempted murder charges, I hope Cortez doesn't follow in his dad footsteps.

And he laughed cuz it probably caught him completely off guard or he was hoping that that question wouldn't come up that day..so when cortez did ask it, he was probably thinking "damn i was hoping he wouldnt ask that"

I think his dad cares it's just that when you're locked up it makes you hard, any sign of emotion is perceived as weakness by other inmates. It would be a bit difficult to change that mind-set within one meeting with a son he hasn't seen nor heard from in 8 years.

BayAreaTre Exactly what I was thinking. What are you supposed to say when you see your son for the first time in 8 years, especially under these circumstances? I know if I was in the father's place I would feel ashamed and full of guilt, knowing that I (1) killed a man and (2) have to somehow face my son after my poor decisions. And I agree about the laughing, it's a very common nervous reaction, it doesn't mean he necessarily found the act of attempted murder to be hilarious. I fell out of my kayak one time far out from shore, and I laughed to tears, but I can assure you I was scared shitless. I digress.
