Very detailed video on the living expenses. I’ve been telling people, for YEARS, to leave the matrix and explore other options. The key is to live where “everybody else” isn’t. When I see these videos, it’s always Pattaya, Chiangmai, and Bangkok, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But, there is so much more to Thailand. The key is finding your spot.
Great point! It's like Moving to Atlanta in the U.S. when everyone else is b/c it's the place to be. I'm looking into Rayong as its supposed to be an up and coming area.
Port your US number to google voice for a one time cost of $20 when you visit the US again in order to keep the number. Phone has to be unlocked and port has to be done in the US on the day you're leaving to go back overseas. Then reroute it to Skype number and plan. You'll have one phone bill and one payment a year for US calls. Just make sure you keep the Google Voice line active by calls and text.
Few notes: On your insurance, make certain you are on the actual health insurance and not the travel insurance. Travel insurance is pretty much BS and worst case they will send you back to the US to get treated in case something serious. On your US Phone service, toss it. There are plenty of ways to get US phone numbers for cheap, and perhaps even free. I use a few of them (I'm living Tokyo, but will visit where youre at soon).
Thats a really nice Condo and id be happy living there for sure. Im not sure why your USA phone bill is so high though. Maybe you are paying for the phone purchase as well? Its all good though, like you say you are saving in many other areas so good on you. My bills here in USA are outrageous. Water bill is crazy high with pool and grass that needs to be watered. Energy bills are also crazy high and only going up up up. Dont even get me started on Car/Home Insurance. But fortunately i do have good health insurance that is paid for by my employer. But as my home gets older there are Major Major repairs that need to be done that are gonna drain me and put me under water eventually. Thats the biggest bummer for me and i can not stand dealing with Contractors who want all your money and more. I think you are in a great spot in Thailand. Once i break free of the stranglehold i hope to be right there with you. Until then im on that hamster wheel throwing my money at things that i dont want to pay for
Thank you for the info. I am planning to move there and live for 1 year with my budget $1500 - $1800 per month. Can’t wait to get out of California. Enjoy your time there and be safe. Btw, I watch almost every new video of you. Take care.
That's a good baseline budget. I live in Thailand. I wouldn't move abroad unless I had an income of at least 25% more than my projected expenses, 50% is safer, which is only about $1000 more than my known monthly expenses.
It's good to hear a logical budget plan I could handle for the basics. I lived in Thailand between 2005-2009. Pattaya and Chiang Mai. September 2024, I begin my Asian home search again. I think this time, I am leaning towards Chiang Rai, Hua Hin, and Jomtien. I've lived in Mexico now for 2 years on the Caribbean. Cancun is a great, cheap hub if you roam like I do. Safety wing is $45 only if you are 39 or younger. Its $73 from 40 to 49, $115 from 50 to 59, and $157 from 60 to 69. They don’t cover cancer and you have to pay the hospital first and then submit for reimbursement (they don’t deal directly with the hospital).

What about social expenses such as dating, alcohol, etc. What's the budget for that? Sounds like you've got a great deal on your apt too. What about visa expenses, that has to be included for a 12 month stay I would say.
You need at least $3K a month for that if you are in a bar hopping, dating or GFE. I've done it for 6 months and it's not enough. In my early 50's now.
What happens when thousands and thousands of men see this, run over there to do the same over some years? The prices rise and you have 10x the male population over there fawning over and sliding money over to the women? I was in Pattaya in 2007, I'd bet it has changed dramatically regarding population and prices.
