Some Actors can move you to tears. Some can make you laugh and still others are just... pure joy. Maggie Smith was all three and more. She was incredible. Honestly...
And what is really amazing is that her next role - The Lady in the Van - showed her at the complete opposite end of the social spectrum. She was incredibly believable in both parts.

I was sadden to hear of Dame Smith’s death this morning. The world has lost an icon but we can remember her greatness through her many works - including Downton Abbey.
Maggie Smith's passing is hitting hard. Her celebrity is from her excellent work rather than seeking media popularity. Two amazing British actresses the world has lost, Dame Smith and Dame Angela Lansbury.
The Dowager Countess is always my favorite. She and Lady Crawley are the best pair on TV. I usually don't pay much attention to costumes, but I have always thought the purple and lavender really suited her. Every outfit was brilliant.
Her role in The Second Best Exotic Marigold hotel, she had what I would consider the finest Curtain Call in life when she was told by an investor that he admired someone who planted trees that they would never see grow and she answered him but they will grow. She gave a performance that showed how someone can leave life with dignity, love and style.
