No one needs to LEARN how to live on $3,000 to $4,000 a month in southeast Asia. With that amount they just live where they want and spend money without really thinking. On $2,000 a month some care is needed. On $1,000 a month, strategic planning is needed. On $500 a month, a financial lifeline and serious prayer is needed!

In the last 48 hours, 3 You Tubers have posted that $2600+/mo is the new norm for living comfortably as a single retiree in key Thai expat destinations. Finally, reality prevails with objective info. Problem is Thailand is now being overrun by settlers, and this will have an impact in the future, good/bad, I don’t know.

Good vlog. The only caveat I might add is that, as you get older, you are likely to find that your entertainment expense does indeed go down, and signficantly so.
Why? Because, eventually, you will have travelled to all of the far-off & exotic places you wanted to go; seen too many beaches, temples, shrines, malls, monkeys & elephants; and eaten just about every type of fine & expensive food that you can stomach. Also, as you age, you probably will not be able to party as hard, drink as much, eat enough at an all-you-can-eat buffer to make it worth the price, take out 2-3 girls every night, or hike 5 miles uphill - after a 2 hour motorcycle ride - to see yet another waterfall.
Eventually, you will spend more time at home, watching Netflix or just hanging out in/around your local neighborhood, eating at your local favorite cheap places and going to bed earlier... and spending much less money.
But, while you are still young, definitely live it up!
Just my personal opinion, and of no particular value to anyone else but me. :)

I just came across your channel and this is the first time i heard someone talking about the reality cost of enjoying Thailand in and a reasonable income. I am from Hawaii (Very expensive place), and i moved here to maximize my life style and not to be frugal...I live in a luxury condo in the fashionable Asok area which is pretty expensive month, but i like the convenience such as good restaurants, clubs, pubs and shopping malls...$1200 for 80sqm unit...I do go out four times a week to enjoy the culinary experience of Bangkok and clubs.. $2000 per month... Transportation is around $200 a month...Four times a week gym cost and massage..$200 per month ...Total expenses: $3600 per month...I also save $400 per month for future travel and other unforseen expenses.
    Total: $4000 per month...120,000THB...

🎯 Key points for quick navigation:

00:02:04 *🏡 Rent cost analysis reveals that USA rents range from $1,500 to $3,000 per month on average, while in Thailand, it's typically between $300 to $800, reflecting significant differences based on location and lifestyle.*
00:05:00 *🏘️ In Thailand, decent-sized homes can be rented for $500 to $800 monthly, providing an affordable living scenario compared to some parts of the USA.*
00:05:43 *🚗 Transportation expenses in the USA average $400 to $1,200, whereas in Thailand, the costs range from $100 to $300, aided by cheaper options like scooters and inexpensive public transport.*

00:12:49 *🏥 Healthcare costs differ greatly; in the USA, insurance ranges from $500 to $1,200 monthly, while Thai insurance is shown as way more affordable at $50 to $150 but might not cover pre-existing conditions.*
00:14:38 *🔌 Utility costs in the USA are $200-500, compared to $50-150 in Thailand, where only electricity costs are comparable to US rates.*
00:17:47 *🎓 Costs involving childcare and education in Thailand can become high, with international school fees potentially hitting $2,000 monthly.*
00:18:29 *🎭 Entertainment budgets vary, with the USA averaging $200 to $500, whereas Thai costs could be significantly lower. However, retirees like the speaker often spend more on activities and experiences.*
19:24 *🍻 Budget management in Thailand can be easier if one avoids excesses like heavy drinking, smoking, or excessive socializing.*
19:52 *🎬 Lower cost of living in Thailand includes affordable entertainment, like $5 movie tickets and $2 beers with ocean views.*
20:19 *🏠 It’s essential to maintain or improve quality of life when relocating abroad, rather than downgrading just to say you moved.*
20:34 *💰 Savings and investments vary widely per individual, with significant debt issues seen in the U.S.; some Americans are still millionaires.*
21:02 *📉 Lower monthly expenses in Thailand offer potential for greater savings from consistent income sources, like rentals or pensions.*
21:30 *🚀 Young people can survive on $1,000/month in Thailand, but should prioritize long-term savings and financial security over immediate gratification.*
21:58 *🌍 Residing in a less expensive country might enable more savings for the future, beneficial when Western income levels remain constant.*

I have lived in Thailand for 8 years and recently audited our expenses. We ,a family of 3; me retired American, my 48 year old Thai wife,my 19 year old daughter. We lived in a very nice 3 bedroom house, gated community w swimming pool, own our home ( recently sold it for a profit) and bought a new home. We own our car, 2 moterbikes, we have traveled to 18 countries including us n Europe, 8 years we spent 216,000
That's $27,000 per year and only $2250 per month for 3 pepole.
We don't rent because owning is wealth building. Renting is an expense. Ownership of a car and moterbikes hold on to their value.
I drink alcohol everyday but buy bottles and mix at home w the wife. We have a dream life on way less than you say it costs. But I understand money and know how to use it.

If you are a farang and want to drink, party, and generally stupid about finances, no amount of money is sufficient to maintain your life. Those who cannot control their "impulses" in their own country will not make it anywhere else. Those farang who cannot figure out their finances in Thailand end up in cambodia or Laos.

I'm retired in the Philippines and we have a $3000 dollar income for our budget. We spend about $2400 a month in living expenses and the rest goes into a medical fund, emergency fund. I have guys here telling me I'm "wasting" or don't know how to spend my money correctly. I just laugh because I LIVE and don't just exist. My budget has many options to where I can go, what we eat, A/C anytime I feel like it, a 3 story home, brand new car, gated subdivision with pool, club house, basketball court. We can go out to any restaurant, go bowling, coffee shops, movies, buy clothes and we don't have to pinch pesos. Here in Cebu City, I live close to major hospitals, an International airport, shipping hub, ferry terminals. I know of some foreigners here that live on $600 a month but they are always under pressure and on edge(wants, needs, inflation, exchange rate, medical). If I were to cut back on everything my family does, I could get our budget down to about $1300 and do NOTHING but WHY?

When we say that Thailand has a lower cost of living I personally think that the best value in Thailand is housing. You will get some combination of bigger and better housing and a more preferable location for less money than in the US. But this is complicated as well. I moved to Thailand from the San Francisco Bay Area. Almost anyplace in the US and Thailand will be less expensive than the Bay Area. So if you come from a moderate cost of living area of the US then the cost of housing will be less than in the US but not quite the huge difference I see.
To complicate it more, suppose you own your house in the US. Your housing cost in the US will be insurance, property taxes, and maintenance. That may or may not add up to much. If you come to Thailand to rent then that is an additional expense and possibly you won't get much savings on housing in Thailand. You may be renting your US housing for income or maybe sold it and now have a large amount of cash.
I was a home owner in the US and moved to Bangkok and rented a condo. I was located in Phra Khanong near a BTS station in a pretty nice condo building. This is a very good location toward the center of Bangkok. The condo was a 1 bedroom 50 sq meters (540 sq ft). My home in the Bay Area was only 950 sq ft so the condo space was quite comfortable for me. The room was furnished and the building had a beautiful pool and an OK gym. I paid 25,000 baht/month (about $750/mo) and the rent stayed the same for the 6 years I lived there. I think my trade of a suburban Bay Area home for a very nice rental condo in the city was a great deal. It's only a deal for me because I was ready to live a nice life in a big city like Bangkok.
Bangkok is the most expensive location in Thailand but not all of Bangkok. You can get just about any level of housing in Bangkok. Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Jomtien, Hua Hin are going to be less expensive. Here in the Isaan countryside expats typically rent vey nice new detached homes in small gated communities.

This is quite balanced discussion. A wide range covering the most people considering SEA. However, the central theme is common - overall 25 to 30% of what one would spend in US. Spending 9K/month Vs. 3K/month is a huge difference in finances for expat retirees. If someone is wealthier, why not enjoy rich life in SEA.
Very well explained. Thanks for sharing !
Aging being a fact of life, the home assistance, helpers, long term care or assisted living or whatever of that nature is similarly less expensive in SEA.

R-man I'd love to see screenshot videos of how its like and how fast it is to order local takeout food from Grab, ordering a local ride from Bolt, hearing your quarterly/annual conversations with a visa agent, and using your existing American Android or Apple phone to switchout a new sim card when you get to Thailand.
As you know one of the companies I've owned for 15 years we help people and businesses move, marry, and work abroad (all countries not just Thailand) and I'm literally subscribed to hundreds of expat type channels.
But the never or almost touched content niche is actually HOW to do the day to day boring daily life stuff in foreign countries.
We all do without thinking this stuff in our home countries but need to see it being done on camera.
IMO the biggest fear for people not moving abroad is how would they do their daily grinding it out life.
    Videos like:
Screen capture videos on how to pay your electric bill through the MEA app and how do you pay you water bill.
How do you get money in U.S bank/credit union accounts to Thailand then change out currency.
What happens and what do you do if you get hit by a another car while walking or driving?
What happens and what should you do if you get bad food poisoning?
What happens or what should you do if you get bit or stung by a creepy crawly?
What should you not do or say when ordering food from a street vendor or at a restaurant?
If you have a medical emergency in Thailand what do you do? You do you call? In the U.S we all know to call 9-1-1.
Can you still order from Amazon or eBay in Thailand? If not; show yourself doing actual ordering from Lazada and
Shopee and how same items compare in price to Amazon (like the same dog carrier you bought from Amazon that was like 1/5th the price from Shopee.
If you are taking preexisting prescription drugs how can you keep getting your same drugs if you move to Thailand?
Are the gyms 24/7, what is the dress code, gym etiquette (in Japan for example you get shamed unless you wear baggy loose fitting clothes no tight skimpy outfits).
If you need a handyman or babysitter, or dog sitter who do you contact? How to vet them.
A whole channel could be dedicated to just shooting computer and mobile screenshots and phone conversations about what we all deal with everyday but in now in Thailand.
It's not sexy, fun, cool, or cute content.
But its 95% of all our daily lives but 99% of the expat content caters to that 5% sexy, fun, cool, and cute content because its easy and fast to make.

Firstly, big props for pronouncing Pattaya the way the Thais do - anyone who wants to argue the toss needs to ask themselves how they would feel if newcomers pronounced Worcestershire or Arkansas the way it is spelled. I understand why you are quoting prices in USD but unless you have a landlord who accepts that currency (usually an inflated figure for newbies), the baht figure is the one the rest of us relate to. I've known Farang who [aid as little as 3k baht a month for a room in Pattaya and others who were paying well in excess of 50k baht in BKK. Thanks for the vid.

Without going into too many details, my experience with Thailand is that the sky is the limit as to what you can spend, but what is necessary is a different story altogether. Think of it as two separate budgets. What you have to spend every month, and what you spend on everything else. The what you have to spend to be comfortable budget? Maybe 50,000 baht. Everything else? At least 500 baht a day. Probably more like 1000. And if you're into all the crazy nightlife, then add thousands to those amounts.

To be honest, I've gone back and forth with your content based on how you seem to crap on other youtubers for building false hope. People need hope that they can get out of their miserable existence and move somewhere to build a new life. I do think we need people telling it like it is though, so I'm subscribed and always waiting for new content. I only did 1 month in Thailand and if I subtracted my flight cost and a few higher end Bangkok hotel nights, my month was right around $3,000. I was not watching the price of anything. If I wanted it, I bought, drank, and ate it. I traveled non-stop too in that budget from BKK, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Phi Phi, Ao Nang. If and when I do a long stay in Thailand in the future, I'd probably do Chiang Mai at least 6 months, and get as far away from the smoke as I can.

Even in the outskirts of Chiang Mai where I live it's too much hassle to drive into the city to find expensive foods on a daily basis. I would have to literally go out of my way and spend my day driving to spend that much a month. My house in the mountains only has maybe 10 places to eat in the whole town and they close by 7-7:30. Some weeks I don't even spend 1000 baht on food. 😂Never been to Pattaya but clearly this is a whole different world than up north.
