I would also be really interested to see an individual tier list.. like top 10 might or top 10 magic heroes, as there definitely are exceptions that shine from some of the classes. If you think that would be of interest to others - I would be happy to see it!

I'm planning to do a big overall tierlist for creatures. I don't think that per tier makes a lot of sense to compare :D If it ends up being too big then maybe per faction? I'll think about how i wanna do it.

wonderful content. I have been playing this game since release on and off and in this time I managed to do some observations. I would like to offer you a different perspective on the battle mages which leading with Dessa I believe are the strongest hero class depending on scenarios.
On large maps if you are PvP-ing or playing against multiple AI all grouped against you, Dessa ( battle mage) is by far the best option because he is able to get the best skills in the game. Being a logistic specialist ( best skill in the game) she is able to get expert, attack, armory earth and air and wisdom ( which is useful on big maps) by level 15 which is very easy achievable by the end of the second week. This puts him at great advantage.
On the stats point of view you are correct but by the second utopia you fix this issue easily.
Regarding rangers, while indeed you are generally correct, a level 3 Jenova with some archers clears maps and paired with her ability to get some free gold everyday I believe it to be one of the strongest rushers in the game (she gets all the good skills for small maps). On the other hand if playing rampart on a large map Mephala is incredibly strong. Taking into account their castle for me they are an easy A.
Yeah, the heroes mentioned by you are decent but the video is about classes, not individual heroes. Classes are also valued regardless of their native castles cuz you can pick a main from any fraction. It's all about his skills and stats

I've been binging your videos lately, but I can't find anywhere here or on the internet info what happens to the hero if he flees / surrenders / dies. What happens to heroes that die; can you pick them back up in the tavern? Do they reset or keep their abilities?
I recently had a game where AI got a stupidly high hero level (I like relaxed long games) and every time I killed him, he just reappeared after 1 turn. Really annoying, because I couldn't outlevel him, so I took massive losses each time to remove him.

Nice overview. Overlords are OP. I got a question for pvp. If my opponent only has summoned elements left on the field and i run away, will his Hero be dead or appear in the tavern like he ran as well?
Hey! In this case the opponent gets his hero in the tavern. He will be ghosted too, meaning he literally does not have a unit on him, not even some 1-stack. Because of this he will have maximum amount of moves, as if his slowest unit is speed 11+.

A tier: Wizrad(you're PRETTY BAD TOO), Warlock, Cleric, Elementalist, Battle Mage
B tier: Knight, Overlord, Druid, Ranger, Necromancer, Barbarian, Beastmaster, Alchemist, Plainwalker
C tier: Demoniac, Heretic, Death Knight, Witch
S tier heroes in my opinion:
- Edric (Castle)
- Kyrre (Rampart)
- Tamika (necro)
- Xyron (Inferno)
- Gunner (dungeon)
this is a really good tier list, my favourite heroe is solmyr because of his chain lightning, hes a very good main heroe and defeats big armies with ease
I like the list i just wanna say the death knight though. If left unchecked that skeleton horde can do some real damage. If you do rock necropolis and your slots are full and you have there upgraded form you get those back. Plus spells to bring back a good majority of the ones lost in combat if you have high enough earth. I ended up with a 2k stack that did all the work for me lol.
can someone please explain what is the reason resistance is banned by default in hota?
It has been replaced by interference. Probably because resistance was a bit too weak and unpredictable. On expert resistance gives a 20% chance of completely negating a spell targeting one of your units. Interference on expert decreases enemy spell power by 30%. Higher, more consistent and also affecting spells targeting their own units (making them lose effect sooner).

Hi! You said at about 5:30 that Death Knight needs Wisdom for Animate but I often see people skipping it with living races, what's the difference between Res and Animate?
Res is applicable to almost any unit (but more expensive and harder to get), animate is solely for undeads
Animate dead is a level 3 spell for undead units only. Death knights need wisdom to be smarter. Most death knights 80% most of the time to get battle type skills. Your main hero MUST always get wisdom for TP purposes
I love playing dungeon... and I love playing Gunnar. That dude rolls all the good stuff all the time... Logistics, Offence, Armorer, Leadership, Earth Magic, Interference plus with his specialty he can move across my game into the next game... Come to think of it... I love all the log specialists xD
leadership is not a good secondary (same with luck). Better to use an item for morale bonus than a skill.
@@takdraw3394 Sure, sure... but leadership is still better than ballistics, luck, first aid, eagle eye, estates or learning amongst others.
Not saying it is an amazing skill to be likely to roll into... but I'd still rank it higher than a lot of worse alternatives, that you could have a high likelyhood of rolling into.

Loved the tier. To compare everything it would be visually even better if the images were replaced by the faction town image with an added icon for Might (a sword like the image of Offense skill for example) or another one for magic heroes (the hat from the Sorcery skill icon for example).
can u please make a guide how to instal this game...do u have to have original Hota can it be downloaded from random site and upgraded to horn of the Abyss?
You will find a link for download on HotA website. I used to have a really old physical copy of HoMM3 few years ago and I couldnt patch it, so I just downloaded full game with HotA from their website. Now I have HotA installed on top of my GOG Heroes Complete Edition copy and it works perfectly, even autoupdates regulary. So, regardless if you have the base game or not, you will find an option to get into it on their website. It's competely free, btw.

This needs an update for Jebus King. Many useless abilities got banned so anything that is held back by high weights in eagle eye/first aid/scholar etc might actually be a much higher tier than in regular game.

I really like beastmasters because of monster specialtys and i love fortress
Captains get 45% 25% 20% 10% primary skill growth. Not sure about them not getting enough attack, that's second best attack growth after Barbarians, who have 55%.
Its not that they don't get enough attack, it just feels bad to have a might hero have that much power. By level 10 a captain is likely to have like 4 power, compared to a Barbarian that is going to have like 2. You really do feel those 2 stat points missing away from your might, but you don't really feel the benefit of that all too much, as usually your might heroes sustain their spell casting off of a spare conjuring/power artifact anyways.
My favorite hero is Adel because of the diplomacy

* It is good (and also important) that you mention the secondary skills and hero bonuses.
Good idea and effort but IMHO you missed on the critical things: Map size&army, main vs support hero. Main hero should never have scholar, estates .. etc.
Any hero who gets: learning, navigation, scouting, sorcery is D tier. (I also dont like tactics but it is very useful VS PLAYER, but also other skills can be useful too)
*Also VS AI : hack&slah skills (artifacts and secondary skills) are good
but VS PLAYER: late game skilss such as spell resistance (20%skill + 30%(+20%) with artifacts) and interferance (30%skill + 60% artifacts) can be really annoying (or fun).
1* There 3 very essential support hero skills: Scholar, estates and logistics
A* Scholar is the best support hero skill and you put alchemist in D rank, whereas scouting (3 hexes is not that much but +2 with artifacts is OK if you did not already discover)
B* Estates (250-500-1.000 daily gold) is the 2nd best supporting skill
C* Logistics is an essential/must support(and main) skill but 20% is OK (tier A)..
2* Especially in small maps with small armies;
A* Knights with ballista or mages with high spell power overpower (ballista is also super good start on impossible)
B* Logistics (max 20% is low) can help you reach the enemy hero or town
C* Knights & clerics usually have estates lets say average 500 daily gold is awesome.
D* Beastmasters are really bad (very good late game, we know TAZAR beats the shit out of CRACK HACK at lvl 50s LOL, so good if you can get lvl 50). They only tank and deal no damage. Considering they are like A:1 D:11, it is boring and excruciating to engage in a war with beastmaster even against AI.
3* Also in early game or small maps, a hero with A:1 D:1 P11 W:6 (mage) is a lot stonger than a hero with A:11 D:6 P:1 W:1 (warrior). If you can hit a lightning bolt (even chain lightning with Solmyr), the enemy army will be easily crippled (not even talking about expert slow or expert curse because expert magic skill can be hard to get)
4* Witches are good. Water skill is OK but not top tier. The problem is Fortress has only 3 levels of mage guild. So, it is important if you take the TOWN into account or not. I believe you did not take the town into account so the witches should be at least top B tier. However, they tend to learn navigation so D tier.
Note1: I don't like diplomacy.
Note2: I always try to equip -1 enemy morale and -1 (-2 if lucky) enemy luck artifacts with me. Negative effect is double the positive effect (check at heroes.thelazy.net/) So morale and luck skills should not be easily forgetten. They may not be S tier skills but they are definitely A tier.
I'm kind of a noob, but Eovacius seems like a really good hero overall. 2 clones allow me to nail fights(especially in the beginning) i would not be able to do normally. So in a way, i temporarily have triple the firepower. So isn't even he better than B-tier :(? Definetily my favorite hero, because the specialty is well... so special :d.
The warlocks wizards are mirrored from Homm2 primary skills all power for Warlock all knowledge for Wizard. Barbarian is Attack Knight is balanced Might and Ranger is Defence.
Seems like the game meta favors might heroes based on your list. There’s only 2 factions, tower and castle, where the magic hero is ranked higher than the night hero here

ps. i think rangers should be at least A tier:D they have like 45% for earth magic (same for water) and they are actually good for late game (kyrre, ivor, giselle, mephala) please consider that:D

I think rangers individually are better than most planeswalkers but i tried to consider classes rather than heroes here. I agree Meph, Giselle are currently preety nuts tho.
Try considering a non-specialty carried base class hero vs hero. I'd take a Fiur/Monere anyday over Jenova/Ufretin. Better primary stat distrubution, better starting skills, likelier logs for planeswalker, simmilar school of magic preferance, slightly leaning towards Ranger, with Planeswalkers being 50% for a good ( air/earth ) school of magic and rangers being 57%.
@@Lexiav thanks for essential respond. rangers have high chance for earth magic (42% for earth, 42% for water, 14% for air, 0% for fire), when planeswalker get only 30% for earth magic (30% earth, 20% water, 20% air, 30% fire) which in my opinion makes rangers better on jebus
I used to play hotseat with my Bro. I was 8 and didn't understand that individual heroes had special skills. My Bro used to pick this guy named kyrre and I was always surprised why I couldn't catch that hero. Eventually I developed another strategy around this guy named darkstorm. Good ol days
I think speaking of the heroes types for what they can do for other factions, above what they can bring to their own faction is interesting, but it means.that you don't account for certain reasons to pick them. But overall really glad you did it none the less, it''s a good list and you give good reasonings.
An example is that you didn't mention that while Planewalkers do not roll Earth Magic often, Conflux can give them Earth Magic really easily through the University of Magic. (Unless that was patched out in one of these mod expansions that I am not entirely sure of?)
imo Elementalists should be rated a bit higher, aside maybe from Inteus they're all Top Tier heroes

Before each hero you could've show us for a few second screen, who is this hero (stats, abilities etc.). That would be even more entertaining to watch.
as I understood it he doesn't rank the heroes separately but he ranks the hero classes.
Battle Mages are SS tier For me. Very good Early and Late Game
First: Dessa = Logistics mastery + Stoneskin = Big Early/Late game combo
Second: Gundula = Attack mastery + Slow = most versatile hero
Third: Terek = Tactics + Haste mastery = Owns battlefield
BM have better chances to get Logistics and Attack. Their ony weakness is that Stronghold does have only 3 lvl MG but you just take over other castle early anyway.
Their biggest weakness is their stat growth, just look at their starting stats, completely garbage unusable stats, 2 1 1 1 is almost unusable early game for a mage, and then they will level up into attack, defense, power and knowledge, all of them at once, what am I supposed to do with a Level 10 hero that has 4 attack 4 defense 3 power and 3 knowledge?? While my level 10 Barbarian is going to have 14 Attack skill, my level 10 Beastmaster is gonna have 14 Defense skill, my level 10 Overlord is gonna have 7 Attack and 7 Defense, my level 10 Elementalist is gonna have 7 Power and 7 Knowledge, Battle Mages are one of the worst support heroes on the game, while they do roll for good skills they get no stats and it's gonna be really hard to get stats on it.

In Heroes of Might and Magic 3, it's important to have an identity, you either want to be a full mage or a full warrior, if you are a Warrior and a Mage at the same time you have to focus on both casting and might which is both harder and less rewarding than focusing on one thing, imagine if you have 15 All stats, your spells don't desl much damage and your army isn't really that strong either, which means the opponent can both might you down or cast you depending on what he does, if yo have 30 30 caster stats you can cast hi, down, and that's your game plan, and with 30 30 might you can get an army and might him down, with equal stats you don't have a plan and you are more vulnerable to the opponent than otherwise in most cases, it also slows you down in the early game. Take the hero Neela for example, she has Armorer and Scholar, which means she is not that good for a Might heri since Scholar is for a mage hero, but she isn't that good for a mage hero either since Armorer and Armorer speciality is for a might hero.
@@DOGEreal I would say this matters less for the duel-type templates where your hero carries everything, and mostly the stat gain makes difference in early game (as later it is kinda watered down by artifacts which provide bonuses to all stats independently, plus level 10 making the gains way more balanced anyway). Most issue I see that you cannot reliably oneshot your enemy neither with army nor spells.
And what would you say about hero with attack/defense gain? Does there it make big difference if they are equal or one is dominating (overlord/barbarian/beastmaster) ?

I think if we consider the hero class and associate it with its specific faction the death knight would be at least top A tier instead of where you put it.
I went for a line where i consider the factions in a void, rather than application for specific factions. Any faction is happy to get a barbarian/overlord/beastmaster, and that's why they're high on the list. And that's why despite being the absolute best for necropolis, necromancers and death knights are not top of the list.

What are prison heroes?
Hey! In most maps there are a map object called "Prison". When claimed they provide you with a randomly rolled level 1-30 hero. Very impactful object in most maps :)

also, knights and death knights have same chance to role offense, defense, archery and most other skills.
Its due to how powerfull earth magic is. At level 4 Overlord has 50% chance for earth, Beastmaster 43% and Barbarian 38%.

One thing to note, is that for general use the magic heroes are a bit better than the might heroes because generally they have more generic specialties. For example lots of might heroes have a specialty with a specific unit

Wizards start with junk skills, and get even more of them, I think that is why they are low on the tier list.

Agreed. Solmyr is the best of all heroes. Just upgrade gremlin and have mage stack. You can march all the way to victory. Though wizard have a tendenncy to get scholar skill.

Did an experiment once on SOD. Malekit has a stronger chain on high level than Solmir. Maybe because he puts a lot of spell power instead of intel.
It's such nonsense that captains have a higher earth magic chance than water or air tbh.

In might and magic, Might can only surpass magic through dead bodies, or luck.

Probably due to Warlocks mostly starting with a good lvl4 spell, or a useful skill- while with wizards- you just pray it is not all bad. So that, plus much higher chance to get earth magic with warlocks.

Hey! In this video we went over the hero Classes, not individual heroes. Drakon would be represented by the beastmaster, Alkin, and Luna by the elementalist Labetha. Tho Luna would ofcourse be better than the rest of her class. I'll likely do a separate video for individual heroes eventually.

As someone who used to play a lot heroes III back in the days against friends and family and so on it feels kinda sad that you describe Wizards wisdom for example as "bad" and that it will plague your secondary skill tree. I don't disagree when you play fan favourtie HotA maps where you usually get spells from tomes/artifacts/boxes etc instead of mage guilds. But on a "regular" map that is still the "only" way to learn spells.
Its more about when wisdom is needed. You do not need it at the beginning of the map. And you are guaranteed to get it later (a chance at least every 6 levels).

Idk man, tho i dont play Hota that much preferring vanilla i think alchemist is solid B tier. THey are by far the best support hero to have. Have lots of mana to take down stray spawns, have alchemy to trade spells inbetween (getting an impactful spell early on from a bought hero can be super helpful).
Also i really dont like this tierlist at all just because there is so BIG difference between class and class. Getting a ranger hero with dwarf specialization? D------- tier. Getting the one with logistic bonus? ++++++ tier. Getting an alchemist might not be powerful but look this one has diplomacy wowie. Basically every class has a hero whos just way WAY worse than its peers and theres one or two standout who just a tier higher due to the bonuses/starting spells it has.
Yeah the tierlists don't do complete justice for sure and opinions vary :D This is just me sharing my views in a simple, yet easy to consume fun format, that is all!
@@Lexiav Ye the other tierlists are fun and good imo but the hero classes have too many variables to be rated like this. Also they are not exclusive so in the end all factions has potentially access to all ofthem right?

@@alpacaherder5680 I play SoD with house rules (check the link please), and one of them is that top class heroes (like the ones specializing in anything very powerful- logistics, attack, LVL4 spell, etc.) are not allowed to be trained. The rule is there, because otherwise the same ~15-20 heroes are trained every time, which gets boring soon.
So without those best heroes- hero classes are quite consistent, and some classes are way better than others.

Hey! I play online for some years now. On the currently most popular HotA ladder i ended up peaking top 40, usually am in top 100 of the playerbase. I'm not the best yet but i have some credability, taking games off the best players too at times. I am okay with our opinions being different tho :D
