Demystifing HondaJet Service with Josh Boyd - Des Moines Flying Service
I flew N682TM into KDMS for scheduled maintenance and had the opportunity to sit down for an impromptu chat with Josh Boyd, the President of Des Moines Flying Service, a specialty maintenance shop and well known HondaJet Service Center.
www.desmoinesflyingservice.com/
Josh was kind enough to let me pop open my iPad and get his insights into how HondaJet and their best partners are making this work.
No, I didn't deliberately make the Blue Max Yeti the star of the video!

    Hey 👋 question here. How much does it cost to own an honda jet on a yearly basis. Like, if the plane doesn't fly at all how much would you expect to pay ? 150k ? Or more ?

    • @bluemaxsix
      @bluemaxsix 9 дней назад

      Hi Robin - like most things, it depends. But you're smart to ask about fixed costs vs Variable costs For me, fixed costs are: Cost of capital (loan) Insurance Aircraft Management Maintenance Tracking Pub Subscriptions Flight Data Management FlightAware (black out my flights from public) ForeFlight (Foreflight) Sirus Subscription (in flight wx) Jeppesen (database and chart subscription) Air-Sync (flight data monitoring) For me specifically,all of that together (minus the cost of capital) is $74K annually

      @@bluemaxsix another question that comes into my mind. When you look at the elite s and the elite 2 do you think like there is a huge step forward or is just small improvements ? Like in terms of safety with the new equipment what would it bring to spend 3 more millions so that you could have version 2.1 instead of version 2.0. Not sure I'm being clear but I guess my question would be "is it worth it" even without the question of money

    • @bluemaxsix
      @bluemaxsix 7 дней назад

      Wow you're really all over this! I've flown every current version of the HondaJet : Legacy, APMG, Elite, Elite S, and Elite II What I can definitely say is that HACI makes major upgrades and improvements to each version/Rev of the jet. The engineering improvement process is significant. Theyve also worked hard to ensure backwards compatibility. So unless there's a physical reason that prevents it, we're able to upgrade our jets. The biggest shift was from the Legacy/APMG to the Elite. That changed the fuel capacity and updated the Garmin G3000. Everything else from that point is backwards compatibile and upgrade-able. Can you tell I'm highly opinionated about the HondaJet?!

    enjoying the channel and the Honda Jet ops. A little info about the airspace your flying in: I was a controller at Washington Center from 2003-2016 and worked the airspace you were flying in on this flight. Climbing northwest as you were it's impossible not to get incremental climb clearances as you got on this flight. Your climbing at 90 degree angles across major SW departure flows out of the DC and NY metro airports over the GVE and MOL VORs. The airspace is cut up into low and high altitude sectors with the lows owning up to FL230 and the highs everything above that. You'll only get cleared to 230 and then shipped to the high sector. As you get west of the MOL VOR, your then crossing DC arrivals coming over BKW VOR eastbound, descending. West of that flow, your crossing the DC and NY departures heading to the west coast, climbing. So, its a busy area for departures and arrivals and it's hard not to get step climbed until you get further west. Stay safe and keep the video coming.

    I would love to see you view on the runway excursions as to whether some of that is based on the performance calcs in the Garmin g3000 and people forgetting that quite often when flying precision approaches available runway is reduced when landing at the 1000 ft markers. Ie performance calcs might say 3800 feet required. Runway length 4200 ft. But you lose runway as not touching down on numbers.

    • @bluemaxsix
      @bluemaxsix 5 месяцев назад

      I actually think the opposite - the G3000 calculations are for flying a fully configured, stabilized approach and for touching down at the predicted touchdown point (Captain's Bars). Including: power to idle at 50' agl and upon touchdown - speedbreak deployed, max breaking. I'm not a safety expert but have analyzed all available data and continue to find the following issue: - inadequate or incomplete performance planning - questionable aeronautical decision making - failure to fly a stabilized approach - failure to maintain aircraft control after touchdown. Keep flying the jet until you're at or below taxi speed. I haven't seen any issues at all with the HondaJet platform.

    We had 2 boys who are awesome, but our lives got so much better when our daughter in laws joined the family!. Now we have 2 granddaughters and they are so much fun to spoil. I was telling my wife about all your daughters this morning, all over the world and she just said WOW, now that sounds expensive. Thanks so much for the great content of Charleston, why did you not land at JZI?

      Agree about daughters. I like JZI but the approach into CHS is magnificent. JZIs East West runway is long enough but jn the jet, I like a nice long runway whenever possible.

    Hey there I’m a new subscriber. Love the Hondajet can’t wait to own one, hopefully soon. Question for you sir. When the service ceiling is 43000 ft can you fly it safely above that say 44000? And because of that amazing service ceiling it surely does mean you must get some crazy tailwinds at times? Love you channel keep up the amazing work learning lots from you.

      Thanks for watching. No you cannot. FL430 is a limitation imposed on the aircraft.

    Thanks for all the great information on the HJet. I have been following its development from the first announcements and live in NC not to far from the factory. Your videos are the first time I have seen what they are like to fly. As someone who got his license in 1983 and an instrument rating before GPS, the automation in these new machines is just magic (as is foreflight). Enjoy the Michigan content as well. Have great memories skiing and playing golf up that way. thanks for the time you put into making these awesome videos!

      The design and automation is what drew me to the HJ. It's incredible.

    Really enjoyed 3 part Anatomy of HA420 flight. Would it be possible to do some video on how your type rating training was like? Flight safety sim? Syllabus, ground instruction, flight portion, # of flight training, duration, total flight time, study material such as POH, G3000 manual, How difficult to memorize memory times. etc. No need for fancy pictures / video. HA420 is a lot faster than helicopter and flies higher. Is it easy to get used to the difference? I may have a chance to start HA420 flight training after mid April 2024.

      Hmm. Let me think about the best way to do that. Any ideas?

    You need to set longer exposure times on the camera to get rid of the screen flicker. You might need to use an ND filter to prevent a too bright picture. Or you can set up some curtains and lower the brightness of the environment and the camera will automatically switch to an higher exposure time. If possible, just keeping it in the hangar would also work for videos like this in the future.

      That's probably the best setting advice I've had so far. Makes sense. I'm recording a flight next week and I'll give it a try.

    You have definitely taken over from P1D…. Nothing against N395GM . And yes, probably most people don’t want to watch the taxi but it’s still pretty cool. Hell anytime you get to watch from start to finish is so educational. This is coming from a professional truck driver for 35 years. I really miss flying. However I get my fix from you… thank you, it makes my day. So many crazy drivers on the road now a days its relaxing seeing you fly.

    That sounds like a great idea sharing flight data with insurance companies for a discount and rebates. I shared with my auto insurance company the OBD port data for a month, drove it like a school bus for a month. Got the discount, but never a rebate. 😢 Thanks for all the great insights.
