Ep. 14 - Pumpkins are Gaining Size!! {It's Go Time!}
The giant pumpkins are starting to grow more quickly! Each day they are noticeably bigger, which is the point of the season when things start to get fun. The pumpkin on the 2501 Bernstrom plant has some injuries, which are hopefully healing up fine. The 1643 New plant is really struggling and I am close to giving up on that plant. Hoping with the dry weather in the forecast, I still might be able to save the plant and get a pumpkin out of that patch.
A reminder that I have a giant pumpkin seed giveaway still going on for another week. Please see Episode 13 for details of the giant pumpkin seed giveaway contest. I am giving away seeds from my 1931 pound pumpkin and my 1970.5 pound pumpkin.

Ep. 13 - Giant Pumpkin Update {& Seed Giveaway!!!}
Просмотров 57619 часов назад
All 3 giant pumpkin plants now have a pumpkin pollinated on them!! I have trained the vines to allow space for a massive pumpkin to grow on each plant. I placed plywood boards down with sand on top for each pumpkin to grow on. The board gives the pumpkin a solid surface and prevents critters from getting under the pumpkin. The sand provides drainage and helps the pumpkin slide as it grows. The ...

A giant pumpkin on the 1643 New plant has been pollinated with 4 male flowers from the 2501 Bernstrom plant. Just like previous updates, it rained almost every day since the last update. We have dry weather in the forecast so hoping the 1643 New plant and 1005 Clementz plant start to kick it into gear. The 2501 Bernstrom plant is still doing well. #giantpumpkin #growingpumpkins #giantvegetables...

The 2501 Bernstrom giant pumpkin plant is doing well. The other two plants (1005 Clementz and 1643 New) are struggling with all of the rain we have been getting. Frogs have moved into my new patch with how wet it is. I have been continuing to bury vines on my plants and hope to have a pollination by the next weekly update! #giantpumpkin #growingpumpkins #giantvegetables As always, please let me...

Done! Good luck with your pumpkins!
Thanks! Good luck in the contest!
Hope your patch dries up quickly for you. I’m starting with rain on & off for the next week. I’ll cross my fingers that we get some dry, sunny days☀️ DONE.
Definitely looking forward to drier weather. As I am writing this, it is currently raining…ugh. Good luck in the contest!
Done
Thanks for following along. Good luck in the contest!
That could have been a bird or a mouse or squirrel. My largest big max has a scare too and I'm really not sure how but it looks like it's going to be fine
Good to hear that yours is healing up fine. Hope mine does the same.
I dont know the grade of your property but a french drain might possibly help and if your property is too flat then possibly you could dig a couple of 4 foot deep pits around the perimeter of the waterlogged pach and fill them with gravel and put a pipe in the center of the pit thats just big enough for a pump to slide inside and that will give the extra water somewhere to accumulate that you could pump it out and away
I am not sure if you have seen my previous videos, but I dug a trench along the one side of the wet patch. Only about a foot deep, a foot wide and maybe 6-8 feet long. I started by carry 5 gallon buckets of water out of the patch and moved to pumping after removing about 700 gallons by bucket. I probably removed 3,000-4,000 gallons of water before I gave up. Mainly gave up because I needed the hoses and extension cords for other purposes. I really appreciate your suggestions! I may just move to a new location for this patch next year.
Nice!!!!!
Thanks for following along! It has been fun following your grow as well.
@@theturnerranchwifor sure! I might roll with the set I have at about 10 feet small day 20 but it’s starting to crank a bit putting on 4” cc a day. Not awful
@@Giantpumpkinswitheric I don’t start measuring until day 20 so should have my first measurements in my next update.
Hi! I am invested in seeing how things turn out. Do you have the ability to water out there if you need to? If so will you raise the elevation of the swamp? With a semi of topsoil? Here’s to giant pumpkins! 🧡🎃🧡
Yes, I have the ability to water all of my pumpkins. Really not sure what I am going to do with the swamp patch. Might move to a new location for next year or just grow 2 pumpkins. Yesterday, I trimmed off some of the dead leaves/vines and uncovered any vines I had buried earlier in the year. I also put compost under the vines to get them a little elevated.
👍🎃
Done and im just starting down the big pumpkin growing rabbit hole i have been using dills Atlantic giant seeds but 3 years in i still haven't gotten a single pumpkin animals ate my vines 2 years in a row but this year all my vines at different times turned yellow and willted and died around a week after they turned yellow i was wondering if you would have any ideas on what it was and what i could do for prevention in the future
Also my goal is 250 to 350 lbs I would definitely take one bigger if possible but without packing a ton of fertilizers so that its still edible so I can share with family and friends and I'm growing with a small budget so I can't afford the like 10 different fertilizers that the pro's use and am open to any and all advice
Hard to say without pictures (and potentially still hard to say with pictures). Could be bugs biting the plant and giving it yellow vine disease/decline. Could be soil disease. If you were curious, you could get a soil disease test done.
Burying vines is probably the best option to get the best size without a bunch of fertilizer. I put a bunch of stuff into my plants, but definitely wouldn’t eat my pumpkins. We grow other pumpkins in a separate patch for carving and eating the seeds. If you have access to compost, that would help as well without the need for fertilizer. Good soil is key so compost would be helpful. To get my soil completely balanced for giant pumpkins, I end up having to add a handful of different fertilizers. Thanks for following along and good luck in the seed contest.
You almost bit it there!
Yes I did. Definitely not the first time. I should probably add a way into the patch at some point.
What'd you feed it?
Today I fed the plants 5-2 Wonder Blend, which is humic/fulvic acid plus seaweed.
@@theturnerranchwiI've heard about using seaweed. The powder you used looked like algae powder to me so that had me wondering if algae could be something good to use. It has nitrogen in it but I guess you're probably not focusing on getting nitrogen in the plant over other nutrients.

Hope the Big Max are growing well! It is fun seeing the true giants put on the pounds. Good luck in the contest!

I think maybe rice would grow better in the new plot. Got to be a spring somewhere nearby.
I know there is a spring on the other side of the field next to that patch. Probably won’t grow there again.
Crazy, i thought we were wet, you have had more rain than us
It has to stop at some point.
Nice! Good-luck! Looking good!

Done, it’s currently too hot for my Atlantic giant female flowers to take. I’ll have to restart in a 2-4 weeks.
Good luck getting a pollination to take!

Hi Mittens! ❤ 😻
She jumped up on my shoulder when I was kneeling down trying to check a video clip I just filmed.

Done!!! Been treading water for the last few days with my patch. Hopefully everything goes well with this heat!
What area are you in? What kind of temperatures? Our highs are only in the 70s right now.
@@theturnerranchwi North Florida extremely hard given 100 plus degree days with lows only in the mid 70's. I start around late Jan under grow light and transplant around end of feb.
Congrats on 200 subscribers! 🎃🧡🎃👍🏼 How many days with no rain?
Thanks! Went 5 days in a row with no rain, then got a decent amount and now have been dry 3 days. Heard we might get 1-2” tonight into tomorrow.
Done🙌🏻
Good luck!

I would definitely ditch that leaf. One good gust of wind and its going to scratch+scar the pumpkin
Good thinking. I will have to get rid of it after this next round of rain we are getting tonight into tomorrow. I normally leave that leaf most of the season, but not with where it is coming off the vine.
Done, hope everything goes smoothly for you this summer.
Thanks! Definitely hoping for drier weather. Good luck in the contest!

Done! I have a leaf near my pumpkin keeps getting in the way. Cutting it off soon I think.
My leaf will probably come off soon too. Good luck in the contest!
Inundated with rain here in RI this week so I feel your pain. Great updates, looking good 🙌
Thanks for following along. It sounds like we are going to get another 1-2” of rain tonight into tomorrow. Hopefully you dry out soon.
What!
I never saw them growing up, but have seen one the past 4 years.
Geez, does it rain every 20 minutes in Wisconsin or what? Plants definitely looking healthier at least!
That is what it feels like. We actually got our biggest break from rain of the season this past week. However, rain came down hard yesterday. I wish all of my plants looked like this one.
I'm in a swamp aswell it sucks even in a greenhouse, right on the water doesn't help lol
Just hoping it stops raining and the patch dries out before the plant roots all rot.
Did you throw down any granular fertilizer down while it is soaking?
No, I didn’t. I have tried foliar feeding some Cal-Mag Plus since it has a little nitrogen in it and calcium is supposed to help with cell division. However, every time I do, it rains so not sure how much has gotten absorbed. With how wet the soil actually is, I don’t know if this plant will survive until things have time to actually dry out. Even our yard around this patch is like a sponge when you walk on it. We have never had that before. Where the main part of the plant is was amended with granular fertilizer so it should have what it needs in the soil. I don’t want to overdo it in case it actually starts taking up what is in the soil. I am a grower that doesn’t like to overdo things typically. I like to do little things and wait to see how the plants respond.
🧐
Can’t wait to see them run once you get a bit of dry weather. Oxygen back to the roots will do wonders.
If they start to run, I am going to have to find more time to keep up with weeding and burying vines. Not a bad problem to have.
I feel bad for you growers in the upper Midwest. The rain has been non stop up there
On Sunday, the forecast had said no rain for 5 days. Now, it says we are going to get 2 to 3 inches tonight. Ugh!
Hope that pollination take on the new patch plant. Sounds like a great cross in the works. Here’s to some dry weather to get that patch less swamped
Thank you!
Hoping for a successful pollination and good weather for you friend.....you deserve it!
Thank you!
