    Another excellent tutorial Mike 👍. Do you cut the pavilion facets first before the girdle facets in order to give you room to work with? Thank you in advance.

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry 16 дней назад

      For this design, I cut the pavilion facets that cut to a center point first and then the facets of the girdle that correspond to those pavilion facets so that I could set the width of the stone. Then I cut the rest. I cut the pavilion facets first as they help to align the girdle facets.

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry 17 дней назад

      99% of the time I cut and polish the table last. But there is are situations where I will cut and polish the table before the rest of the crown. Those situations are where i don't quite have enough space or maybe just exactly enough space to cut the crown. In those situations I may cut/polish the table before polishing in the rest of the crown so I can make the facets on the crown just touch the table. Often in these cases I have to adjust the angles in the crown slightly. Short answer - I cut/polish the crown before the table.

      I agree about Robert's designs. His designs are all well thought out. You may want to also look for lab created Alexandrite, which is available. It is a color change. However, in my experience, there is much more demand for Lab Ruby or Blue Sapphire than for Alexandrite. But maybe that is just in my market.

    Fun fact about its name. There is a major error happened in naming this gemstone "Padparadscha", by the industry. This is a loosely heard translation of actual name, which is originated in Sri Lanka. As name suggest, it means King of Flowers (which is lotus) Correct word/pronunciation should be "Padma-raja" (Padma - flower, Raja - King). This is a historic error, that deserved to be corrected ☺

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry 7 дней назад

      I am a bit of a lap-a-holic, so I tend to try all the laps I can. I do notice a difference with different laps and sometimes on that one troublesome facet, a different lap is the magic bullet. So for me, yet, I like having different laps. However, I know many, as in very many, cutters who get by with very few laps and they do great. Although I never mastered my ceramic lap, I do know cutters who do all their polishing on one ceramic lap...it works for them...but not me. I know cutters who only own the Batlap and love it. So what ever works for you.

    Hey Bopper, what polish do you think will be sufficient for synthetic corundums for a budget cutter, as im just new to faceting I’m using each side of a batt lap with batt sticks to polish but sceptical that a 3k pre polish and a 14k final will not be efficient, will a 3k to a 60k remove all scratches?

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry Месяц назад

      I know many cutters who polish corundum to a 14K level. The best way to get a great polish, is to start with a great prepolish. So if you are ending up with 'scratches' or grooves with your 14K on a Batt, maybe need to work on your technique for prepolishing or polishing. Maybe your rpm's are too high maybe you have too much diamond on your lap...it could be many factors, but I can't tell from just texting you.

    Explain me the definition of 100, 260,600 etc

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry Месяц назад

      When I talk about a 100 lap or 260 lap or 600 lap, I mean that the lap has 100 'grit' diamond embedded into the steel top, or 260 'grit' diamond or 600 'grit' diamond. So it refers to the 'grit' of the diamond. Grit is the size of the abrasive, in this case, diamond. 100 grit (size) diamonds are larger than 260 grit, which are larger than 600 grit, etc. The larger the size of the diamonds, the more abrasive it is to the gemstone...the more it cuts. Grit is not used as a size in all countries. In some countries they measure the diamond size in microns. So 100 grit is about 163microns. I have a 12 M (Micron) scintered lap from Ukraine which is the equivalent of about a 1500 grit lap (actually 1587 grit). Hope this helps.

    Another great video thanks! Your recut is SO much more attractive than that behemoth you started with. I didn’t see the starting weight - how was your yield? Had to be better than if you started from a rough stone.

    • @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry
      @BOPIESDiamondsFineJewelry Месяц назад

      Yes, the original stone was just too heavy, weighing in at 143.23cts. Yield was just under 50% which is much better than I normally do with a piece of true rough. However, yield was not the goal in this case. Cutting out that cloud in the pavilion without losing much size (length to width) was the goal, and the final gemstone is essentially the same size as the original.
