Fantastic tutorial! What is the tickest that your lumber can be for through dovetails with that jig?
Thank you. You can only cut what the bit will reach. And you have the thickness of the template to account for too. Probably 3/4 at most
Easy step by step with $20,000 woodworking shop... thanks Bud
Thank you!
One of the only videos I’ve been able to find on hot to sharpen curved chisels like that with the WS3000. Is it all freehand or do you use the support under there to maintain a constant angle
@collectpanda3350 I do it freehand. I don't know if there is a support for curved chisels under a WS3000. Some grinders have after market supports.
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy36795 year old video, 10 minute response time. Thank you sir

0:50 lol my mom is from North Carolina. I’m in the Midwest. But the way you say oil reminds me of how she still says it to this day!! lol
Lol. It's a hillbilly thang
Thanks for this. It looks like your box size is limited by the clearance from the jig clamp to the floor? Can you do a flush dovetail with this versus just a corner joint if you wanted to make some artful longer boxes? Sorry if that doesn't make sense, but like a butt joint only the joint is dovetailed? for the butt joint dove tail, couldn't you use the tail joint on both ends and just flip one of the ends to face away from the jig?
Yes your box size is somewhat limited in size by how far you mount the jig in relation to the floor. Not sure I am understanding the rest of your question. You can do through dovetails, halfblind dovetails, sliding and stopped dovetails and box joints with this jig. I have videos of all of those. Maybe email me a picture of what you are talking about and ill see if I can't figure it out
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 I meant Instead of doing a 90 degree corner joint, can you do a flush dove tail joint... a joint between two boards that are flush, no corner, no angle i.e. taking two boards and making it into one board with a dove tail joint to join them?
@WithoutTroy oh ok. I see what your saying. You can't with the jig. You will probably have to hand cut those. You could cut your dovetails with the jig but you would still have to hand cut the pins side do extend a boards length like that
Thanks for your information, I was lost.
You are welcome. Thanks for watching
Many thanks for a thorough tutorial. I just bought my jig and this really helps.

@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 Absolutely - and many thanks (again)
By the way amigo your video is fantastic, great job!
Thank you. It means a lot to hear that
Question. When you talk about making the pins tighter (17:00 mark of the video) you move the jig closer to you. Does this also apply to the tails? I assume (maybe incorrectly) that the tails are not adjustable, they are the shape they are and that's it, all of the adjustment is to the pins only?
Yes. Just the pins are adjustable. The tails are cut by the bit passing through the work piece straight so there is no adjusting them. The pins are adjustable. When you move the template forward and backwards it will allow sizing the pins. Moving the pin template backwards, or away from you allows a wider range of the template over the work piece. The tail template has straight tines, so there is no adjustments to the tails
Genius 👏👏
Great easy jig!😊
Thanks. I use that one a lot. It works great.
Great presentation. Love the way you explained everything. Having worked with wood for 30 years it was nice listening to an experienced woodworker. BTW never thought I would see another woodworker have a set of Jet clamps as well as Jorgenson
Thank you. My wife bought me those jet clamps several yrs ago. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have them. They are good clamps but way to expensive. I have an abundance of clamps brands. Never did stick to one particular brand.
looks like it would work great in the setup you have here where you have an odd number of tines/teeth on the template, but what about when you have an even number? Isn't the centre of the board going to be directly below a tine? How does the template work in this case?
You always mark center of your work piece and line it up with the center or the tines. This will allow for room, evenly on both sides for the outside pins to go or half pins. You should not have the ends or edges of the board falling under a tine. Make some test material the same size as you actual work piece and use Chad's Template as instructed and you shouldn't have any problems. Let us know how it goes
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 Thanks Tracy. That makes sense.
I have plugs in my truck
Thanks for a really great video. So much more accessible than the manual. One thing the manual does say about box/finger joints is that you should use the opposite end of the jig for cutting your second piece. You use the first piece you cut as the guide for setting up the end stop at the right-hand side. I think this would mean that you could batch out both ends of the joint without changing your set-up once you have it dialled in? Any reason why you don't use this approach? I've had the jig for about 3 years and haven't dedicated the time to making it work yet, so your video has given me the motivation to go and give it another try. Thanks again.
Thank you. I just do it the way I did because that is what works for me. I have a Playlist on this jig if you are interested

Don't like the way he did his tooooo much to do
I am a carpentry enthusiast, residing in Colombia, South America. I acquired Chad's template a long time ago but had not had the opportunity to use it. In fact, I feel sorry for Chad because he did everything necessary, even spending his own money, for me to receive his template and I had agreed to give an opinion about it, which I had not done because I had not used it. I used it and it turned out perfect for my dovetails. Thanks Chad and I recommend his template. Regards, Luis Alfonso
I just watched the video on 5/11/2024. Thank you for a succinct review of the through dovetail process on this jig. Short, sweet and to the point.

Can you show a setup for a pantry draw which will have sides taller than the front side?
I'm not sure I know exactly what you are asking about. Can you send me a photo of an example? tmaxfield48@gmail.com.
Having the shelves close together is actually a great idea, should help preventing it from becoming a catch all like yours truly
That's what I was thinking too when I seen how close they were on each section. Will keep from piling too much on. There is 5.5 inches between each bracket. So 5 boards would be the most on each shelf
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 I have a fairly good homemade shelf but changing the space between may be a good idea
148bf?
You are correct
A few little screw threads are holding up all that weight.
Lol. I know. But it's holding it. We will see if it comes down. I put also all my weight on just one bracket and it held me. Each section has 3 screws in it. Time will tell. If it fails I will try something different. Maybe toggle bolts.
Yep cool thing thank you
The problem is the gravity gun the cup too small
It is small. I agree
What if you leave the excess on, and basically brush it on like paint. If you let that dry completely, could you poly over it?
You can, it will just take several days dry time. If it's too thick it will be sticky for some time. I have done this. I made some tounge n groove boards and put them together and made a table top. Then I coated stain like your talking about, sanded spots back off and made it look like an old gym floor that had been burnt. It looked great.
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 I just sanded my hardwood floors in my kitchen, then I put this Varathane fast drying stain on, wiped it off, and it magnified every imperfection... including all my swirl marks from my sander. I noticed when I brush it on like paint, it looks so much better. Do you reckon as long as the stain is not tacky at all, it's dry enough?
@johnp82 it sounds like you may have needed to sand it more and move through the grits. If you paint it on thick, it can take several days, even over a week to dry completely.
@@hammerdownwoodworkingtracy3679 to be honest, the leftover stain I had that coated the inside of a plastic cup dried completely to the touch overnight. I think it's a faster drying stain than traditional Minwax stain.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks

trying to find a link to order the template
It is in the description. It's an ETSY link
hey what is the cutting diameter of the straight router bit you're using? I'm using the "smaller" straight bit given from the 4216 porter cable set but it doesn't seem to be the right size? aka the finger joints cut out by the straight bit are too large to be joined with the other board (also cut with the straight bit)
Use a 1/4 straight bit. I explained the bits in the video
This is one of the best reasons to buy Factory Refurbished. When they get this returned they don't want to see it again so most super easy simple to fix problems are upgraded. If you search on Google the return rates of items that have been factory refurbished have the lowest return rate, they fix all the small things like loose wiring, screws that strip, defective switches, in this case a magnet that cracks -- just one thing I have never seen them give a list on any piece of equipment that's gone through factory refurbishing it would be great if they offered it. Guessing they don't involves their Legal department. btw I own this same router bought refurbished from Dewalt (including full manufacturer warranty, very important) via ebay & after a year it has never given me a problem. If there is a part number on the cracked magnet let me know & when I have time I'll try & check if mine has a different part number, I'd guess if its been swapped out, could have a dash "A" or a "1" after the original part number, ie XXXXX-A, if swapped out during refurbishing. ...this doesn't tell me if this cracking was the reason it was returned, but would let us know if they know it is enough of a problem they made a new version to replace the one known to crack.
And this router been on the market for half a decade, so if this was a problem, I'd bet it was a bug in the design that has been knocked out years ago. I recall when I was a kid being told to never buy a car that had a build code shows it was made on a Monday because the line mechanics are hungover from watching Sunday Night Football the night before or on a Friday because the line mechanics are daydreaming about where they're going to be drinking that night with their friends etc. And never buy the vehicle the year it comes out because usually the first year version has bugs and by the second or third year version of the vehicle has given them the chance to knock those bugs out. ...also the reason when buying a replacement part from a junkyard to buy it from a newer version of that same part ...that & never buy leather seats, get them for pennies on the dollar used from a junkyard, or any plug & play car upgrades, you can easily change a standard version of a used car to the "grand" version after a few visits to different junkyards. ...sorry I need to headout somewhere & I do not want to go so I am rambling on.
I don't have the magnet that broke. Actually I never fixed mine. I have 6 or 7 routers and just never bothered with fixing it
now that's a great idea 😎
I did this a couple of years ago with a cereal box - make your shapes to fit between the fingers draw your center line on cardboard and lumber, then use a paper punch over the center line on the cardboard. Line up the lines through the window of the paper punched hole - it is really easy - just like a gun site
Thank you so much.
Very helpful and insightful tips! This is probably a dumb question, but can you use the sled with the saw blade tilted left? The manual says something about OK to tilt right, but doesn't tell you what to do if your blade is left tilting. Thanks
If your blade tilts right you can move the offcut board and use it when cutting bevels. But if your blade tilts left you will cut into the sled. Once you do that you will no longer have zero clearance on the left side of the blade. I don't recommend doing that. Instead I would make a table saw sled and use it for cutting bevels. This sled costs too much to mess it up and make it worthless for anything except Bevel cuts. Hope that makes sense. But I will add, it does make for very fine precision cuts on everything else.
The two measuring scales are meant to overlap. You can see through the one on top to align the marks on the top with the marks on the bottom tape. It's easy to do.
A FANTASTIC JOB SIR! IF you have a UNI-FENCE (look up Deluxe Table Saw @ Joes Shop 3622) I'm going to put a link to this site on my website for this type of fence adjustment.
What is a good sitting distance from the table top sometimes the table top could be too high up or too low. Also sitting too low and comfortable either if you’re overweight like me.
I put my seat height at 18 inches. Which is pretty standard with most kitchen table chairs. The table either was around 34 inches. You can adjust this to suit your own needs. If you use a lead sled or other rifle holding devise you will want to allow enough room for it to sit on the section that comes back between the seats on the table top
Hey Tracy, Thanks for your videos. I enjoy them and they are vey informative. One quick question on the width of the drawer box sides when it comes to using the centering jig for alignment. Is there a standard width to use so the center of each side of the ends comes out exactly in the center of each finger on the template? I've experimented with whole inches, 3,4,5,6 and half of an inch, 3.5, 4,.5 , 5.5 etc. and when you mark the center the boards and use the jig for alignment those marks don't fall in the middle the fingers.
Thanks Jerry. I dont know if there is a standard width or not. I believe I understand what you are asking. I don't think there was a standard in mind when porter cable made the jig. BUT it was made to accommodate any drawer depth up to the width capacity of the jig itself. That's one of the reasons Chad's template is so valuable. It takes all the guess work out of it. But as far as a standard width I don't know of one.
