I'm Andrew - a 27 year old junior doctor based in the UK with a HUGE love for all things running and lifting. But generally if it has anything to do with health and fitness, I'm enthusiastic about it.
I Tried Hybrid Training for 12 Months. This Happened
It's been just over one year since I started hybrid training, so I wanted to share my progress in terms of strength, fitness and body composition. I've called it a transformation, you might call it a minor revision; either way I hope we can all agree it makes a mildly entertaining RUclips video 🤣

Why Counting Calories Isn’t The Answer
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.4 месяца назад
There's no one-size-fits-all approach to anything in life, let alone diet and nutrition. So why does fitness RUclips staunchly defend calorie counting as the only way to lose weight or stay healthy? Here's my take on why some people could benefit from a more rounded view on what their diet is trying to achieve and why counting calories is not always the best thing for everyone... 📍If you enjoye...
I’ve just started recovery from having different eating disorders over the last year and a half. Your videos really do inspire me to find balance in being healthy both physically and mentally, as well as with diet and working out. Your mentality around training and nutrition, and the balance you have really is an inspiration to were I want to get too with my recovery:)) keep it up!!!!
great video - id say its probably notable that nick bare is definitely not natural!
Id say that runner PBs are: 5k 1500m 400m
Great video mate have loved watching your tips and advice on this channel, hopefully looking to start training and doing a ultra myself as it’s one the only distances I haven’t done I do think sometimes there can be pressure to stay light for running at times but I also know I’m healthier with more muscle
Thanks mate! Definitely agree with your last point, and really good luck if you go ahead with the Ultra 💪🏼🏃♂️
Your humility is truly remarkable given your impressive lifts and running times. People often compare natural athletes to those who are enhanced, which can distort their perception of what constitutes genuine achievement. Your transformation over the past year is genuinely impressive. You've inspired me to elevate my fitness and trust the process. This channel is a treasure, offering honesty and quality that I deeply appreciate.
What a lovely comment, thanks for your support and humbled to hear I’ve helped you a little with your own motivation to train 💪🏼
Great video Andrew! I love how dedicated you are but also very realistic and manageable for people who live busy lives/don’t get paid just to spend all day in the gym! I think it’s clear how much the hybrid training has done for you! Can’t wait to see more!
Really glad to hear the video’s landed how I hoped, thanks for your lovely comment 😁
a doctor with a 470kg SBD total, sub 3:30 marathon and sub 40 min 10k is mental - who needs nick bare when you've got Andrew Russell! keep up the good work you beast
Ahh man I’m blushing haha, but seriously thanks for the support mate 👊🏼
Just followed you on Strava! As I was watching your video, I was trying to think about my own transformation with the hydrid training... I wish I had kept track of the numbers a little bit better, but it will definitely be a goal for the future. Great video!
To be honest if I wasn’t doing this RUclips channel it would be harder to keep track of my own numbers. They don’t mean everything but sometimes nice to look back and see how far you’ve come. Happy training 😊
Do you do or recommend any flexibility training at all? I also run and lift and sometimes think flexibility is the last thing missing for optimal physical health
Great content, Andrew. I'm 70 and still swimming, hiking and walking. It works!
Love it! I’m hoping to still be half as active as you are when I’m your age 🙌🏼
I want to be lean with slight muscle When to stop progressive overload so that i wont look bulky .. only lean muscle at right places .. any suggestions you could give me bro...
for your demographics: 57 years old
Brilliant!! 💪🏼😂
Used to rly like lifting, but now I think the ideal “split” would be like 40/60 favoring endurance. Strength has benefits on mortality up to like 2 hrs weekly, but cardio can give better health outcomes up to like 10 hours per week
Rn I’m doing 2 lifts and 4 endurance sessions weekly
Pretty much what I’m doing at the moment, sounds like a good balance 👍🏼
It might be time for some new miniature ^^
What I outline is the end goal. Assess your current fitness level and progress slowly and safely toward what I recommend. Move daily. Don't forget warm-up, mobility, and flexibility work. Do a high intensity circuit workout, followed by however many low intensity days it takes to recover. Then go again.
fantastic content!
Hello! Great video, way super informative. Thank you! I have a question for you as a doctor. There are many studies and articles that say, that long-distance running can decrease testosterone level, however HIIT workouts or sprints can increase it. So, should I stop running (long-distance) because of this moment? I love distance running and now I try to combine it with sprints, but I also don't want to have lower testosterone. So, what should I do? I also do strength training. Thanks again for your vid
Screw you, not fair how can you be handsome, tall, fit and a doctor . No homo here but it’s saying 😂
Awesome video! Production value is crazy!
Nice vid!! What plan are you following for 100k?
Thanks! My own training plan, nothing official to be honest - will talk about it in more detail with my vid covering the attempt in a couple weeks 👍🏼
Good food for thought there. I just started getting into shape and fitness only 2 years ago at 39 years of age. You could call at my “midlife crisis”. I initially had goals of just getting into shape and losing weight, then it became more of an obsession over trying to get bigger in muscle, and recently getting into running. However all of this has become quite hindered this year at 41 when I’ve been played with injuries that have affected both my workouts and my running. Do you think that it is unrealistic for me (who’s only been doing this for 2 years with barely any previous history of working out) to have the same fitness goals as a 20 year old or do you think it’s unrealistic for a 41 year old?
To be honest I think it’s totally reasonable to have similar goals. Although a 20 year old might have a higher theoretical peak in terms of performance than a 41 year old - most never get anywhere near that. So if your goals are to gain muscle, get fitter and stronger, feel better - still makes complete sense as a 41 year old. You might need to be slower with how quickly you build training volume and take recovery more seriously though. Would advise checking out Mark Lewis’s channel if you haven’t already. Normal guy who reached the best shape of his life at 49/50 👍🏼
Great content as per! People often forget the primary purpose of exercising and it’s effects on mind and body. I work out because it’s good for mental health and if I look good on top of it, that’s a bonus!
Spot on mate! Thanks for the support 💪🏼
I like your content!! Great job :)
Congratulations on your under 7 hour finish, ffs!
Haha 🤦🏻 thanks!
good effort!
Great event, Andrew! My congratulations. You're a hige source of inspiration for me. Where are you living now?
Thanks mate, in the East Midlands near Nottingham
How did your apple watch last for an entire 50k?
Wasn’t a problem thankfully it worked great! It will deffo die on the 100k but planning on bringing a portable charger for the rest stops… long term solution is to upgrade to the ultra or a garmin equivalent but too cheap for that currently 😂
Im overtrained unfortunately, im in week 3 now of rest and its getting slightly better.. my legs are still tired. My testosterone is lower, libido lower. Been running and squatting too much and with bad sleep because of training late its a terrible combination. Have you got any advice on how to recover better? Thanks!
I feel personally attacked by the tw@t tan comment 😂 Excellent running, Andrew. I'm sure all the strength training must help massively with muscle endurance. That and the jelly babies! 👍🏻🏃♂️
Hahaha, no offence intended to all those out there rocking one 😉
What shoes did you run in?
Salomon ultra glide 2 👍🏼
Hey Andrew, really well done on the race and a superb video 😎🤙
Thanks mate!😁
Notification gang :)
thanks for sharing the content.....thats pretty nice.....As a hybrid athlete & runner in HK, loving to see these kinds of video about sharing your routine....Lovely lifestyle and beautiful wife you have....keep on...... Andrew🙂
haha sticking to the same meals is something i do too. I eat pretty much the same breakfast, lunch, and snacks everyday and just switch up dinner and I'm completely happy with it.
Exactly! I’m a simple guy, if I find something I like I stick to it 😂
I'm looking to create my own plan, so you have a template or suggest one? I used to do lots of volume, push pull legs but now might scale back to bench, deads, rows, shoulder press and only 3 or 4 exercises per session, making it 45 mins is great. But challenging to keep to in busy gym
Fjallraven high coast cap comes in a L/XL size. Only trail cap I've found that I fit in the UK!
This is great news thanks 😂 will check them out
What a great video, looked so fun and what an amazing place
So beautiful! Would recommend to anyone 🙌🏼
Love chamonix nice vid 👍🏻
Omg he knows us 09:52
Any tips for putting on weight? Do you recommend applying the same approach for eating, i.e., enjoying 3 big meals instead of splitting them into 5 meals per day?
Very refreshing view on training and nutrition. I've lifted in the past and switched recently to running. I miss doing resistance training but thought it would be pointless to do next to running. Happy that you proved me wrong!
they charged you over $27 dollars a person, that is crazy.
Fellow doctor, trying to work out how to work out again! Thanks for this!
Really good video, can relate to the overtraining! Keep up the good content… Random question….were is the red sweatshirt from 😅
Thanks man! It’s from a brand called torpedo 7 😂 bought it when I lived in New Zealand though so not sure if it’s available elsewhere
Disappointing lack of 🐻❤️
Dont remember seeing any bears..? 😉

Thanks for the video. I have a 13 year old son who runs for his school’s cross country team; however, he also wants to get into weight lifting. I sent him some of your videos for tips and motivation.
Brilliant to hear! Thanks for the support and hope he had a good cross country season 👍🏼
I really enjoy the vibe of your videos hahaha Great content! You made me want to make bread, but I failed haha maybe next time :)
Keep trying, my first few attempts were pretty disastrous too 😂
