Why Counting Calories Isn’t The Answer

  • There's no one-size-fits-all approach to anything in life, let alone diet and nutrition. So why does fitness RUclips staunchly defend calorie counting as the only way to lose weight or stay healthy?
    Here's my take on why some people could benefit from a more rounded view on what their diet is trying to achieve and why counting calories is not always the best thing for everyone...

    This channel is so refreshing! Promoting healthy sustainable habits that are so much more applicable to normal people than what you see the top 1% preaching on social media.

    Loved this video Andrew. You nailed every point about how people who aren’t extreme bodybuilders or certain athletes should view food. And whether we are trying to gain,lose or maintain weight- the underlying goal should always be to develop healthy habits that are sustainable for the future. :)

    Love this message and awesome content. While trying to fully recover from my eating disorder, I struggle with tracking calories on a OMAD diet, but as a runner tying to become more hybrid I really want to stop tracking and eat more frequently, as it is ruining my training and recovery. Do you have any tips on going from tracking to more Intuitive eating? 😊

    Another good informative video.As someone who has been involved in fitness for about 45 years.The amount of crap coming from so called personal trainers and influencers is amazing.A whole industry has come about by selling so called transformations,making people feel inadequate because they are not down to 6% body fat .Just try to eat a diet built on fresh foods and a piece of protein at each meal and enjoy improving your fitness

      Spot on, think that sums up what most people should really be aiming for - diet built on fresh food and a training plan focused on enjoyment and gradual improvements in fitness. Glad to find like minded people who’ve been at it longer than me 👍🏼

    It’ll take 6 months of annoyance to get useto it but then you’ll get the maths and it’ll be solud
    I understand not wanting to count calories but I do think you have to go through a period of counting calories just so you can reasonably estimate what you are eating simply by looking. Without ever looking at calories your ‘intuition’ for how much is appropriate will be way off

    What you suggest may seem easy to a young fit person who can afford to eat the way you do. You seem to not understand obese people and what let them to their situation. They need to count calories to understand food again and how much of everything they can eat, at least to start with.

      I think I address this at the end - my approach isn’t perfect I recognise that and probably isn’t best if drastic weight loss is your main goal. I just think maybe intuitive eating should be discussed more as an alternative end goal for some people in the long term 👍🏼

    Do you eat intuitively?

    How many g of protein do you aim to eat per day. It’s confusing when mainstream information will either tell you a gram per kg of body weight or a gram per pound. There is a quite a big different between those 2 numbers 😅

    • @AndrewRussellFitness
      @AndrewRussellFitness  4 месяца назад +1

      I don’t actually count day to day macros but try to get serving of protein with each meal and estimate I’m hitting around 1.5-2g protein per kg which is more than enough for the average active person who lifts weights. Some people recommend a whole lot more but it’s a bit of a law of diminishing returns after 2g/kg bodyweight

      @@AndrewRussellFitness It’s difficult to reach those numbers while being on a mostly plant based diet. (Speaking from experience) I would love to start incorporating more plant based foods to my diet again but struggle to hit my protein intake while doing so.
