I have ADHD and I cannot tell you what going down to 1 meal a day has done for my focus at work. It was such a difference in my workday that everyone at my job was literally like what the hell is going on because I was working that much faster. I know that it might not work for everyone because everyone’s body is different, but it was basically a miracle drug for me.
I practice fasting all year round and ive been an amateur boxer for 8 years, if eat 2 big meals in the day before training in the evening, im so much heavier and more drained even before the session begins, eating one meal is so much better for our bodies in many ways but it all deoends on how your body can digest food, what the food is etc, i believe food that grows from the planet is best for the whole population🤷🏾♂️

Intermittent fasting is absolutely game changing for a variety of reasons, not just weight loss. The fact that it aligns with the circadian rhythms of the body just tells you that the human body was not designed to constantly digest several meals a deal including unnecessary snacking in between meals. Obviously, if you're trying to gain weight or bulk, then its probably not ideal to fast but even then I think you can still fast every now and then when you're bulking and it shouldnt affect your gains or lean muscle mass. I'm such a big advocate and proponent for IF/time-restricted eating.
I can vouch for that. Whenever I fast I start to wake up earlier and earlier naturally. The best way to describe fasting is it being a “reset” button for your entire system. From brain/body to the soul/spirit.
I've been doing this one meal a day diet for a while. I am always 120% focused and energetic, except for maybe an hour and a half after I have my meal. I have no cravings whatsoever, which I used to have, especially for sweets and snacks and what not. When I got into this, I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it consistently for a long time, but I was wrong. I like to experiment with new things. I think experimenting regularly, much like exercising, adds an extra flavour to life, no pun intended. Now, the most difficult aspect of this diet is the lift off period. Just when you're getting into it you'll keep bumping into walls. It is the first couple of weeks/months, depending on your life style so far that is the most difficult mainly because if you consume one meal a day, you have to make sure it's a meal that is packed with nutrients and high in volume. Therefore, you can forget about stuffing yourself full with sweets and ice-cream and garbage from Maccy D's. You can eat these things but in ten times stricter moderation than you ever have. That means your brain in the lift off stage of this diet is going to start coming off of all sorts of addictive substances that junk foods contain. You're going to experience major "hunger strikes", and the reason why I put that in quotation marks is because it's not really hunger. It's withdrawal. Withdrawal in the form of cravings. Cravings for super salty, sugary and spicy foods. Compared to all those super salty, sugary and spicy ultra-processed and pre-packaged "foods" that are available at the supermarket, normal healthy foods may at first taste somewhat bland; not nearly as tasty, not nearly as delicious. Your brain is used to the garbage and now it demands it. So, you must exercise self-restraint, reach down deep and find the willpower within you to resist the cravings and fight off the withdrawals until your brain comes back down to its normal functioning level. That's the most difficult part, but I guess it's like that with most healthy diets. I don't recommend the one meal a day diet because it is very restrictive compared to the alternatives, and I know most people wouldn't be able to maintain it even if they were paid to do it. When it comes to a healthy diet, comfort is important. The person needs to feel comfortable with the diet. Otherwise, they'll keep getting distracted left and right by their hunger. This diet works for some people but will never work for most. Find a diet that fits your life style, tweak it in accordance to your personal needs and preferences, and you'll be fine.

I've done it and honestly bizzarely never had more energy eating once a day at the end of the day and really got rid of fat and kept it off and was really nice to finally sit down at the end of a really productive day and reward yourself with eating a shit ton of food relaxing then going to sleep and getting a great night sleep on a full stomach
Minimum insulin response to food between 12-3pm. I eat once a day around 3pm, great for staying lean on easy mode while being strong & alert to get things done most of the day.

Fitness advice is one of the most things that give you the frustration. You really do need to find what works for you. For some people like me that's no carbs as much as possible and some fasting. Some people like Andrew enjoy one meal a day and i am sure this is not every day. He drinks a shit ton of booze and enjoys the party lifestyle but also does a lot of sparring and fighting so that works for him. Calorie counting and more meals works for others. i get calories in versus calories burned but that's not always as easy as it sounds.
Exactly. In another podcast tate mentions how much coffee he drinks and it doesn't affect him but for others it increases anxiety and makes it more difficult to he really productive. Each person have to try and experiment with what works for them
1 meal a day doesn’t work for athletes. When I used to play academy football. Occasionally after training I would get a severe migraine. Discovered a few years later it was to do with low blood sugar levels and not eating properly throughout the day when I was at school
Me personally i dont feel like i eat enough in general, so I feel the opposite. When I have a meal I feel more sharper, mind you I don't always finish meals I eat enough to stop feeling hungry because I find that the hunger distrates me an I cant focus.
Tate literally makes stuff up and we know this because he says different things at different times on different podcasts. He said he never works out in Thurston’s video, while saying he works out every day in other videos. My point is, take what he says with a pinch of salt - he’s playing algorithms
@@John-kb7pvI never got diarrhea from eating only meat. It weirds me out when people say they get it lol. On the other hand if I eat anything high fiber I get horrible diarrhea so I cut out most veggies
I also do OMAD, but I have a big breakfast, because if I don’t, the hunger would distract me from work. When I get hungry in the evening it doesnt matter because I’m not doing anything important and I can just sleep through the hunger. Ideally I would like to have my meal at noon or early mid afternoon (if I’m not doing anything). However it’s not practical to have that much food at work.
Same here. I can’t concentrate at work when I’m hungry and just obsesses on when I can finally eat and what I’m going to eat. Happy to skip dinner though and go to bed hungry and tend to sleep better on an empty stomach.
I do like this: waking up at 4-5, excersise and breakfast to fill the gap of protein. No more than I think is needed. Then dinner at about 5 so it takes some time to digest and bed at 9. I'll have 1 or 2 cheat days. I think people mix up hunger with nutrition-loss and that's not the case. But be gentle when switching.
The mental clarity is intriguing, i'm currently doing 2 meals a day (lunch and dinner). I'm going try and phase into 1 meal day (dinner). I think its easier if you are on a no carb diet, as the carb cravings would just be an extra annoyance, but on a no-carb diet (keto or even carnivore) I feel comfortable enough wait a few hours or go without food for longer without feeling weird.
Eating windows and Omad are very different. One large clean meal is great - very hard to get 2k calories in. Give me 15 mins i I could demolish 3k in savoury and sweet snacks. The method that worked for me is old fashioned calorie in counting and eating as and when I’m hungry
Just finished 2.5k calories in one meal from oats, rice, potatoes, chicken breast, apples and nuts. Took me around 40 minutes. It got easier when body got used to it. When i started i could not finish 1k calories eating like this.
Thank you. I get that some people focus better while hungry, but I can't do ANYTHING when I'm hungry. I'm pissy, confused, and pretty much useless. I kinda envy the hungry high performers tbh.
@@matthewiyiola234 It's because you're not supplementing enough calories into that one meal. You don't have to wait til later in the day like dinner just eat when you feel you absolutely need to and consume slightly less than your daily calorie intake whatever that is. For example, if you eat 2000 calories a day normally throughout 3 meals cut it to a 1200 calorie lunch and drink LOTS of water or zero calorie drinks, it will replace the hunger trust me. Also stay VERY active you must burn calories to lose weight as well in a calorie deficit. I hope this helped ;)
I did this for about a year and a half, dangerous tactic for muscle maintenance. If you only ingest protein once a day your body will not be able to synthesize it as well and this will, over time, lead to a higher fat percentage and a lower muscle percentage. Even at the same weight your body composition will get worse. A 16/8 fasting regime would be preferable if you are looking to maintain your muscle mass. For more info I recommend Peter Attia.
It was found that fasting affected levels of LH and testosterone. They decreased after periods of energy restriction. (Fasting) Intermittent fasting every day over a long period of time can have a detrimental effect on T levels. If you have high energy output you need high energy input. One meal a day is not going to provide that no matter how big the meal is.
5-6 meals a day works well enough for me. It means i´m never full and sluggish because the meals are small, but also rarely hungry because i eat all the time, even if it´s just a cup of yoghurt or a handful of walnuts. Lost 20 kilos so far, but still have another 20 to go :D.
That makes complete sense. The choice isn’t limited to the extremes of be starving hungry, or stuffed so full you want to sleep. Small healthy snacks through the day seem a good idea to me.
Doesn't it depend on what you eat. I think Kiana Tom (of ESPN 2 Exercise "fame") says to eat frequent small meals. Give the body a steady stream of nutrition. AT's approach seems to work well for him. Kiana's seems to have worked well for her. She's in excellent shape, close to 60, and looks 20 years younger. I think Woody Allen's advice is best "Whatever Works."
I like eating my only meal close to my sleep, to avoid being hungry in bed. It works very well. And i eat alot trust me. And it doesnt make me uneasy or whatever in bed. In fact i sleep way better with a full stomach
Hey James, huge fan (love the new book). Just curious - have you changed your stance on Tate? From memory you made a video a few months ago decrying him. Like you said in the podcast, I think he makes a lot of great points but there are some views I don’t agree with. Just interested in what made you change your mind on him
true, it takes some getting used to - I work regulary through the night and next day (no sleep) doing this in a fasted state is vastly easier than after eating
I found on fewer meals per day that when I'm hungry, I'm not mentally clear but can't stop thinking "need to eat, need to eat, need to eat..." and nothing else is clear in my mind. Maybe if I did it for longer and got more used to being hungry, it would be good. On first try, I was just too hungry to concentrate!
Large protein-heavy salads have this same effect for me without having to feel hungry. Pretty sure the high levels of A and K vitamins have something to do with it, so that more of the glucose im converting from the rest of my diet makes it through to ATP. This is a somewhat educated hunch: i have a PhD which included a fair amount of nutritional biochemistry (but not in animals)
He's not wrong. When you're hungry you're mind is on. This is very true. If you have enough self control not to munch and fill up during the day I believe you perform better.

how does one get enough calories to both bulk and build muscle eating one meal a day? Are people really able to fit 2,500-3,000 calories in one meal? And if you do get enough protein in that one meal are you able to absorb and use all that protein to go towards muscle protein synthesis?
I'm the completely opposite. I'd rather have mutliple small meals throughout the day. It keeps my brain going yet doesn't weigh me down. When I get hungry my brain doesn't work correctly and I get foggy.

One problem with intermittent fasting that nobody ever really talks about is that it causes you to be basically constipated literally all the time. Like when I tried it, I would literally go for 5 days straight without shitting at all, and to be completely honest, I need to have a cup of coffee and some kind of carbs and sugar such as a bagel with butter along with a chocolate cream filled donut first thing in the morning in order to be able to wake up properly and function throughout the day. Not doing this makes me overly tired, grumpy, depressed, and at times even angry, so yeah, intermittent fasting is definitely not for everybody, sorry to say.

I tried this but I work on the tools and it's a bit hit and miss, mainly because my workload can vary a lot. Sometimes I'll be first fixing a whole house and doing 2800 cal a day and some days I'll be sitting on my arse fault finding an electrical fault in a 1m2 cupboard lol.
I started eating only one balanced meal a day Trust me it's fantastic my strength skyrocketed,I lost 5 kgs going on this diet so far, with excercise 5 times a week My jawline became more muscular and defined,my belly looks almost flat and well defined,my energy levels skyrocketed,i consume low amounts of carbohydrates and sugars and consume a high amount of protein and minerals You will not regret going into this diet
I know that most of the people after lunch they don't want to work anymore but me I like to eat even earlier than 12 because after lunch I am getting even more energy after around half an hour.
I feel like privelaged people to whatever degree can choose to starve. You can be privelaged in one way and still starve but.. Starving people crave food. If you know it’s always going to be there, you don’t need to focus your attention on it. I personally need to eat well to function properly at work. If I’m hungry, I’m thinking about food and know 100% I will do it better with a content stomach( unless I’m actually hunting for food in desperation). Everybody’s situation is different but some people just have no choice.
I eat once a day and don't plan on changing that, but I will say that if the need to eat for some reason comes up then I'm not against doing so. It just hasn't happened. it really depends on what your doing I suppose. Manual labor can be taxing and you'll need the fuel, but I tend to view my body as a machine and sense the things it needs. I do cardio, strength training but I've stopped working out to get super big. Just not interested in that anymore. I figure if I can do a few sets of 30 pushups with 60 pounds in a backpack I'm good at 46 years old. Of course I try to translate that across all muscles overall, and it doesn't seem to need more than one meal a day for me. I usually workout anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour every morning then some yard work before actual work. I keep busy you know. Honestly the hunger feeling isn't even that for me anymore, not even unpleasant at all and yeah, the brain is always on and the body is never lazy so I'm good. Of course you always need to look at your machine so I think it's just about being in touch with your body and making changes as you need them.

Would be great to hear more about your experience fasting with your friends during Ramadan
Minimum insulin response to food between 12-3pm. I eat once a day around 3pm, great for staying lean on easy mode while being strong & alert to get things done most of the day.

I already have functional strength and lean muscle to do everything I need to do; my objectives are to maintain things as they are!
If your goal is to pack on size and extra muscle you will need to eat multiple times per day!
I was eating one meal a day, but then I started doing some resistance training first thing in the morning, so I’ve incorporated a high protein breakfast straight after my workout.
The weights make me huuuuungry
@@tpmedia3784 Funny, it doesn't make me hungry at all. I usually eat an hour before I left, some good carbs and I'm good to go.

@@kevinkev7036 How many calories you taking in daily? Improve the quality of your calories instead of volume of food.
Each person have to try and experiment with what works for them
You said it all when you said, "You really do need to find what works for you." That's it in a nutshell. 🙂
1 meal a day doesn’t work for athletes. When I used to play academy football. Occasionally after training I would get a severe migraine. Discovered a few years later it was to do with low blood sugar levels and not eating properly throughout the day when I was at school
He needed all the mental clarity to traffic women
Me personally i dont feel like i eat enough in general, so I feel the opposite. When I have a meal I feel more sharper, mind you I don't always finish meals I eat enough to stop feeling hungry because I find that the hunger distrates me an I cant focus.
Bro I started following after that podcast u seemed very genuine
Tate literally makes stuff up and we know this because he says different things at different times on different podcasts. He said he never works out in Thurston’s video, while saying he works out every day in other videos. My point is, take what he says with a pinch of salt - he’s playing algorithms
he works out at home, not at a gym.. u are just slow

This is what i do. 400 grams of ground beef for break fast and lamb and yoghurt for dinner
Where’s the full podcast?
Eating definitely makes u tired easier and sluggish the less I eat the better I feel .
Thanks James Smith! Please keep it coming
I eat one meal a year...the hunger makes me me move from universe 😂
If I ate one meal a day then started to work, I would be eating my laptop.
Then your one meal must have been trash cause onad literally strips fat away from your body. Been doing it for 3 years
Bullshit i do OMAD and I’m the most ripped ive ever been
@@TWavyBaby is it easy to get ABS when doing omad? what do you eat usually?
It was found that fasting affected levels of LH and testosterone. They decreased after periods of energy restriction. (Fasting)
Intermittent fasting every day over a long period of time can have a detrimental effect on T levels.
If you have high energy output you need high energy input. One meal a day is not going to provide that no matter how big the meal is.
they increase, not decrease.
I eat one big meal at night and i do cardio at day ...I lost fat and i gain muscle ..i never felt so healthy in my entire life .
I only eat once a year. I can run at the speed of light and I just bought an island.
The problem is after an hour of eating one meal a day I am hungry after an hour and can not sleep. Sleep is very important.
Just interested in what made you change your mind on him
He likes anyone who helps him get on.
Because he’s inauthentic
true, it takes some getting used to - I work regulary through the night and next day (no sleep) doing this in a fasted state is vastly easier than after eating
No nonsense logical advice. Thanks for keeping it real bro.
Gotta be busy

I’m 48 with a big gut and skinny limbs. Would Omad work for my while hitting the gym 5 days a weeks ?
Large protein-heavy salads have this same effect for me without having to feel hungry. Pretty sure the high levels of A and K vitamins have something to do with it, so that more of the glucose im converting from the rest of my diet makes it through to ATP. This is a somewhat educated hunch: i have a PhD which included a fair amount of nutritional biochemistry (but not in animals)

Eating less is really Important. You should not eat full.
how does one get enough calories to both bulk and build muscle eating one meal a day? Are people really able to fit 2,500-3,000 calories in one meal? And if you do get enough protein in that one meal are you able to absorb and use all that protein to go towards muscle protein synthesis?

I'm the completely opposite. I'd rather have mutliple small meals throughout the day. It keeps my brain going yet doesn't weigh me down. When I get hungry my brain doesn't work correctly and I get foggy.
the reason why it doesnt work for you is because you cant stop stuffing your face you are weak minded and you give into the cravings do fasting or one meal a day for a month and see how much better you really feel your body needs to adjust
I find that eating wine meal a day helps you gain back a lot of your time. I don’t hear a lot of people talk about it. But you get back a lot of time that you spend going to get food, cooking food, and eating food.

It waits in water for a full year for wildebeests to come and drink, and snatches one. The next opportunity will be a full year away, but they are fine with that.

Trying this out tomorrow. I workout early mornings so hopefully my body does okay to this kind of change

The reaso. Everyone at work feels sluggish after they eat cos they prob eaten a high carb , highly processed food with probably seed oil init , no need to skip meals , just eat clean
Like everything in fitness it’s going to be personal but it’s useful and practical advice. Personally, if I don’t eat i just get focussed on trying to find food
It coulddd be that you’re just addicted to eating as opposed to really needing the nutrition.
