George Turner: Voices of Delaware Black History
George Turner grew up on the west side of Wilmington. Although he lived within eyesight of A.I. DuPont Elementary School, he had to walk several miles to the Colored elementary school near 8th and Scott Street to attend school. For this reason, his situation was considered by Louis Redding to be included as one of the Delaware Segregation cases that eventually became part of the landmark 1954 Supreme Court "Brown v. Board of Education" case.

Paulette Sullivan Moore, Esq.: Voices of Delaware Black History

Paulette Sullivan Moore was born in Chester, PA to a teenage mother. They moved to Wilmington, living in several different Black neighborhoods while Paulette got the best education possible. Paulette discovered she loved "the law", and its ability to promote change for those in her community. Eventually she became an attorney, becoming the first Black female attorney in the State of Delaware.

Waynne Paskins grew up on the outskirts of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. At that time, job opportunities for Blacks were limited to manual labor in businesses supporting the seasonal tourist trade. As part of our "Growing Up Black Series," we profiled Bobby Carney Jones. She moved from St. Louis to Delaware when she was four years old. Unlike her school in St. Louis, her Delaware schools were segregated. Despite this, and becoming a young mother in high school, Bobby earned her diplomas and became a successful educator.

In May, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. That August, the Milford, Delaware School Board voted to integrate Milford High School. This video documents the history of what happened that September when the school admitted 11 Black students. Eventually Milford High admitted Black students in September, 1962.
