EPIC female vocal sound with the Stam Audio ADG compressor!
Find out how I created this epic female pop vocal sound on "Doomsday" by Kendra Dantes that was featured on the show FOUND on NCB. Speaking of found...I've found my new favorite compressor for female vocals, it's the Stam Audio ADG! Using it an unusual way(all buttons in with a slower release) created one of my favorite vocal sounds I've ever gotten.

Do you think this catch peaks fast enough for rap vocals?
Do you happen to ever do Q&A/consultation sessions? You’re super rad about answering questions in the comments but I’d love to pick your brain a bit and don’t want to unfairly take too much of your time.
I think i might try this on my rap vocals mines kinda old school
I bet it would be great for that! Particularly limiter mode. Let me know what you think once you get a chance to try one.
@@SeawellStudios ok cool by the way I just tried the new elysia skulpter mpreesor qube up against my ams Neve 1073 in the ams Neve genesys black console Ilooking for something different but there's no comparing the 2 the console of course is on a whole nother level
@@SeawellStudiosalso I think I might purchase the dynamic card for the console
Did I miss something ? I didn’t see you bypass on and off for comparison .
When the screen has a dark overlay & says “bypassed” in the top left corner the EQs are bypassed.
I definitely prefer the hardware with the better top end 🙂
very cool - I love it on drums
There’s nothing wrong with gatekeeping. There is no “right” to the finer things in life. If I want to earn lots of money to enable me to spend on a 9.4.6 movie experience in my living room, then that is totally ok. The fact that a poor person can’t afford what I can, is a “he” problem and not a “me” problem. If you want good stuff, you have to be more valuable to earn the necessary income to support it. If you are unwilling or unable to do that, you make do with less. It’s a little thing called “reality”. All men are NOT created equal. Some work harder and have better values than others. Those that do this get to have better and more enjoyable stuff. If you want to penetrate the kept gate, earn the money and buy the ticket.
Are you replying to a comment or the video itself? This video isn't about gatekeeping at all so I'm not sure what you mean unless RUclips pulled this up weird and I'm not seeing the comment you're responding to.
Responding to the top comment which asserted Atmos was an attempt at gatekeeping.
Also wonder why Atmos would apply to music at all. The band or the artist is always standing in front of the audience. To me the correct application is purely for feature films.
@@sandsmarc ok thanks, that makes sense. RUclips is so weird with how it delivers comments to me 🤦🏻♂
@@sandsmarc agreed!
Thanks so much man I just took the pro tools 101 exam(this was not on it😂) I was really getting into a mix when it happened. Life saver for real❤
I’m so glad the video was helpful! I hope the exam went well 😁
@ why thank you it sure did 🤞🏾
@@chasesabari420 Nice! 👊
I use these and feel like they bleed way too much to use for recording
Thanks for this video. I am going to get one :-) If you have to suggest another fast compressor to use with it, witch one fits better between retro176 and 1176 or similar in your opinion? thanks again
You forgot the Dachman mic ? Not sure where I can find Serrano 87 in the US market.
I didn’t forget it, I just hadn’t heard of it 😁
Im thinking of buying the Serrano vintage 87 matched pair for OH or ROOM mics, are you still impressed by that mic, and do you recomend it? how close do you think it is really to the original? Also, im surprised that there is not much videos about serrano mics on YT.
I still think the Serrano is a fantastic mic and particularly hard to beat at that price! I don't think it sounded exactly like the vintage 87 in this shootout but then again I don't think any of the other mics did either. I did a separate review of just the Serrano here that I hope you'll find helpful as well: ruclips.net/video/0zJNpWsLt6w/видео.html
@@SeawellStudios so wich one do you like (or recomend for drums oh and rooms) better, serrano, bn or stam? Somehow i just dont like wa 87. Few days ago i was at the local music shop and i opened it. It looks a mess and very cheap inside.
@@elvissrsen For overheads I'd probably go with Stam. I get what you're saying about the Warm, it's definitely not the most impressive looking mic under the hood.
@@SeawellStudios thanx. I sent you a message on your facebook page.
Great shootout, but i gotta ask, on the reveal video there is almost no white noise before the start of each take, but on the first video (blind test) i hear a lot of it on everz take. Why is that?
I'm not sure as I don't still have the video editing session for that video but if I had to guess I forgot to mute the audio for one of the video tracks(probably the b roll footage of the mics) and that added some noise. My apologies, the whole video editing world has been a steep learning curve and I do all of it myself. Hopefully between part 1 and 2 though you were still able to get some useful info from the shootout 👍🏼
@ i sure did. Thanx. It will pull some money from my pockets to buy some serrano mic 🤣🤣
@@elvissrsen 🤑
I'm glad I came across this video! L-Bus Gold was modeled after my SSL FXG384, and we managed to get within 0.1dB of peak level differences at -3dB compression (software vs. hardware). I even did a shootout with UAD, and at the time, it was surprisingly close to Tim P's plugin and my hardware unit. I did prefer the hardware, but for ITB solutions, you cannot go wrong with L-Bus! Great video-thanks for sharing!
Thanks for checking out the video. That's awesome it was your FXG384 and you guys were able to get so close to the hardware! I used L-Bus on a lot of mixes before getting the Smart. It is a great plug-in for sure.
Your comments seem more targeted to audiophile. I think it is a much larger consideration for movie experiences
I’m speaking to audio engineers, particularly smaller or home studio owners.
Hello, I really wonder how it compares with the latest best ssl audio plg-ins ?? Anyone had the opportunity to compare ??? Thanks for sharing your experience Cheers Ed
Hey Ed, thanks for checking out the video! I did not compare the Stam to plug-ins but I did do a shootout video with the Smart C1LA vs all of the top SSL Plug-Ins so hopefully that will be helpful: ruclips.net/video/f7heTZcZfts/видео.html&pp=ygUKc21hcnQgYzFsYQ%3D%3D
Looks like my link was erased. Just search for Listen Pro Ear Pads on the big auction site. They are like $13 and change each. Knowing Focal, they probably want $50-$70 and you'll wait forever for them.
Per your request, here are the Ear Pads that I bought. I bought 3 pair of these and also a pair of the black vinyl type. The only notable difference is that the Pads aren't Labled L or R like the originals. Of course the left side is the side with the cord.
Man who cares about the compressor, the songwriting and singing is on point, kudos.
I think they really missed the boat not being able to use the THD along with either the comp or limiter.
Push either the comp or limiter & you’ll get THD as well 👍🏻
you’re saying the THD mode is operates at all times as the gain knob increases? Does THD mode bypass the ability to use the comp and limiter?
@@SDA-Sound I just mean THD mode isn't the only way to get significant color and/or saturation out of the unit. On the RS660, compression on low levels of gain reduction can be fairly transparent but pushing harder into compression or limiting can also have some saturation and break up. THD allows you to go beyond that, into distortion when desired.
That’s what I was originally explaining. The THD is a different sound and it just seems a miss to not allow that into the compressor or limiter.
@@SDA-Sound I would imagine the reason is it would take it too far away from the original design to be marketed as a 660. I don't see it as a miss, I see the THD option as just an added bonus and I wouldn't really want anything else altering the sound of the compressor and limiter modes.
Did I ever mention here, there are cheap replacement ear cups from Asia. Yeah you'll wait a bit for them. but they will come. And they are beautiful replacements from the Bay. They even have a black vinyl type cups also, They are easy to remove, but an SOB to replace. Take time and patience, these cheap replacements fit perfectly in all respects exactly like the originals.
I don't think you did. Thanks, can you post a link to them here? I know RUclips is funny about that sometimes and will remove the post but give it a try if you don't mind.
I so agree with you on everything you said... The benefit just doesn't justify the hassle! For cinema okay maybe, but who listens to music on 5.1 setups at home? Why would it be different for atmos? I really think there' a conceptual problem with the immersive sound dream: In real life we've always experienced music as listeners, from a distance... Standing in the middle of a string quartet or a rock band just doesn't sound as good than from a distance from the spectator position. Every instrument we ever did was done with this objective... For music specifically I really think the 2 speaker set up is the best possible way to reproduce the spectators experience for us two eared species :3
For a long time I was a pure stereo listener, but now I use an Atmos/Auro3D setup (5.4.4) more for music than for films. On the one hand, the offering on Apple Music has increased significantly, and on the other hand, the Auro3D upmixing is also great (both for 5.1 films and for stereo music). Even when the effects aren't used as heavily, the 3D mixes create an atmosphere where the stage goes well beyond what's possible with stereo - both in width and height. Precise instruments and vocals are then placed into this rather diffuse background. It's hard to describe, but I really like it. I think the problem here is that many will never experience this level of sound quality. Unfortunately, the marketing hype suggests that a soundbar can replace 7 or more speakers through magical reflections, which is simply not true. But whatever, I hope the hype stays. :-)
I had mic c>mic e>mic a>mic d>mic b.... I was almost sure of c being the vintage and a being the ai, it has that recognizeable himid boost, but i'm really surprised that the serrano was so good. In other videos i wasn't that much of a fan. Also have to say i didn't really care for the ai so there's that...
bruh how you gonna do an engineering mic shootout and have the worst sibilance of all time essess in the video smh
Make your own video then golden ears.
Thank you for this. I ran into this issue today - had no idea iLok licences were stored on the actual computer! Have requested the release, and have emailed EastWest directly too in the hope they can help. This is seems very convoluted for 2024?! Cheers Josh.
It does seem very convoluted for 2024, agreed! I hope it works out quickly for you! Thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment, it's much appreciated.
Sounds descent. I recently heard the current telefunken c12 @ AES being very clear & natural without the sizzle on the top & was wondering how any of the beesneez offerings compared. Is a hz graph provided?
For a more direct comparison to the Telefunken, check out the BeesNeez BC12. There is a frequency graph posted on the “specifications” section: beesneezproaudio.com/product/c12-classic/
The sound character of this unit is amazing. Gotta have one someday.
I think to my ears (and what the youtube can give back in sound quality) , the most natural sound is the Vintage U87, absolutely the best. The second is the newest U87ai, natural, but like a bit modern. Than the WA87, it is the warmest to my ears (i have too a WA87 and love it). The BeesNees i think i heard some digital, modern sound or i cant descript it. The Serrano after the Vintage U87 sound like a cheap clone/fake mic.
Full res .wav files are available(link in the video description) if you’d like to have those as well 👍🏻
@SeawellStudios i'll check them in my studio later, thanks
Love this video. Watched it several times. Loving the sound of the Focusrite. Seems like the one you have with both transformers is the sought after one. Have you heard the Focusrite 3 without the two transformers? Is having both transformers worth it or does the other one sound as good? Thanks so much and take care
I'm so glad you've enjoyed this video! The Red 3 truly is a sound all its own. It is something special. I've had the pleasure of using 3 different Red 3 units over the years but they all were early units with input and output transformers, so I'm afraid I don't have any experience with one of the later units that didn't have input transformers.
@@SeawellStudios Last week I was able to locate and purchase an older Red 3 with both input and output transformers. So excited to get it into the studio. Although I must say, I just watched your video again and the Smart CLA had some serious glue! I’m kind of tripping out on that one too. Feels very SSL. Love it. Thanks again and keep on rockin’ - Gregory
Is the Smart the 500 series? The one that fits in a API type rack? Thank you
@@gregorya.haldan2638 that's awesome! They are not easy to source so I'm glad to hear you found one. I hope you enjoy it!
@@gregorya.haldan2638 it is, I picked mine up from Vintage King. It definitely has that familiar glue that we've heard on a bunch of records! I also use it often in limit mode as a parallel drum aux. 9 times out of 10 the Red 3 is on the mix buss, but that glue of the C1LA makes it the choice on some songs still to this day.
Thank you so much for your videos. Just a question. Are you usually use this gear during recording or after that in the mixed track, so you can explore different characters?
I"m so glad you're enjoying the videos! I use outboard like the 176 during tracking and mixing. For instance, if tracking I usually set the 176 at 2:1, slowest attack, fastest release. In a mix I usually do something more aggressive like 4:1 with a fast attack and release. It's a really versatile unit so you can use it in either tracking and/or mixing with no problem or undesired sonic build up.
@ thanks so much even for the tips ….I am going to buy one beetween retro 176, stalevel or rs124. I am going to use on voices and try on mixbus (L and R separately because they are mono). I think retro 176 is the most versatile unit but i am really attracted from rs124 design
what if it says plugin not present but its a plugin you have?
In that case I’d check the plug-in website to grab the latest installer. If there’s no update for it, I’d at least delete the plug-in from the plug-ins folder & re-install it. I would also check Pro Tools for an update.
Really adds a lot of presence / dimension.
This iLOK thing is somewhat complicated and bring a lot of confusion. I have downlaoded a free AIR Music plugins/instruments (Hybrid, Mini Grand, Velvet) as a bundle for AKAI MPK Mini. In iLOK manager owner is not registered. If I was to return the keybaord or sell it to someone else, is it worth taking ownership of the license here and then deactivating it? This is all so confusing and I see that a lot of people are not certain what to do. Thnx.
It all is complicated and I wish we didn't have to deal with it at all! If you register an iLok license to your account, then later decide to sell it, you can transfer them to another iLok account for a $25 transfer fee. I hope that helps!
This vs RS124; you can pick a pair of either for mixing 🤔 what is your pick?
RS124 for pretty much everything. 176 will be best for some vocals. It’s a tough call but the RS124 tone is the pinnacle of compression to me.
@ thanks for your feedback!! I appreciate it and it means a lot
Any time! 👊🏼
protools 2024 is doing this on my newly built pc. I usually quit and re open protools to fix. def going to try this! thank you!
Pultec
I 100% agree with this in the the case of Music Atmos mix scene. But in Cinema Business its different. Either in practicality.
This Retro STA Level or the Audioscape V-Comp+? Is there a difference? Special for Vocals. Have you used the STA with a nother comp? What is Your Favorit (also combinations) for Vocals?
This is the Retro Sta Level. Even though this and the AudioScaoe are both modeled after the Gates Sta Level, they sound a bit different from one another to me. I personally prefer the Retro. I’ve used the Sta Level followed by an 1176 with good results 👍🏻 My favorites for vocals are the Sta Level, Retro 176, Chandler RS124, BLA Bluey & Stam ADG. I work with all kinds of vocalists so it’s hard to say which one(or combo) will win for any given song, but those are my favorites.
@ Thank you very much! Then I‘ll look to the Retro STA first and add on later if I need to.
@@SeawellStudios ordered it today. Can you tell me your vocal tracking settings on the Unit?
@@FlashRocket96 Mode set to Double, and recovery time set to fastest or second fastest release times are my usual starting point for tracking vocals. Feel free to ignore the VU meter on the Sta Level more than most compressors, it can compress 20db plus and still sound great when that is desired. Just use your ears and have fun! Congrats on your Sta Level, I hope you enjoy it!
@ Thank you very much! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
omg I was losing my freaking mind because I'm using pro tools for school and I'm on a deadline and just holding shift and nothing else restored it to full working and opening it without instantly saying its not responding thankyouthankyouthankyou

COPIA DEL AUSTRIAN AUDIO
Not true at all. Both are "copies" of AKG anyway so I don't think you can give any of them a hard time for recreating mics built around Brass C12K capsules considering AKG stopped making those capsule 40 years ago. The BeesNeez is crafted after the C12a while the Austrian is more of a 414. Personally, I much prefer a C12a to a 414.
Have you heard any tube stereo compressor better
I think it depends on where you think you'll use it most. For versatility on multiple tracks, the revolver is going to be hard to beat. If the primary use is mix buss, I'd also check out the Manley Vari Mu.
Very nice shootout! Coffee is very impressive for a plugin.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I agree, coffee is very impressive. I just wish the metering wasn't so sporadic on it.
My favorite vocal compressor
nice mic, i like how the mic is capturing transients and not more of the tone.
What a cool studio and engineer! It takes sand to make and share comparison videos like this. Thank you! - btw I heard that CLAs bluey had a backwards attack pot - and black lion went with it. Fast attack hard left fast release hard right
When I tried Dolby Atmos, with my IEMs, I thought, is this a joke? It sounded so much worse than the Stereo mix, that the sound was quieter, more far from me, and like it comes from a hole. Also the experience was a little bit different with other devices, but it was similar. Why don't more artists make Binaural Recordings?! Like, the simple, real Binaural Recording sounds so much realistic, like Dolby Atmos is aiming to sound. Maybe Dolby Atmos sounds better on other devices, but it definetly didn't sound right with my devices. I was excited, but only to later conclude that Dolby Atmos is just too expensive and not realistic, but natural, real Binaural Recordings are the way to go.
Uncompressed sounded the best to me 🤷♂️ followed by the hardware. The plugins emulated the effect of the compression reasonably well but I can’t say the quality of the sonics and musicality are as good.
Hello. Did you got the version 2 of this BU67? I just got mine. Sounds really good. I am surprised. My only remarks are about the foam between transformer and tube socket, some piece of paper (sticker) placed somewhere between the circuit board and the frame and use of a wire instead of a collar to fix the tube. I belive this should be improved as the mic is designed to be opened often for using those switches. Would be a pitty to not improve those things considering it sounds fantastic.
The mic in my reviews was version 1. I haven’t had a chance to demo version 2 yet.
Duuuuuude!!!
Did it work for you?
