EPIC female vocal sound with the Stam Audio ADG compressor!
Find out how I created this epic female pop vocal sound on "Doomsday" by Kendra Dantes that was featured on the show FOUND on NCB. Speaking of found...I've found my new favorite compressor for female vocals, it's the Stam Audio ADG! Using it an unusual way(all buttons in with a slower release) created one of my favorite vocal sounds I've ever gotten.

    The reality is that there are thousands of artists creating crappy music and everyone wants to know why their not getting paid. The medium is not the right consideration for making money. Only a great artist will generate the money you want.

    First off, Atmos 2.0 sounds awesome and few engineers could make a stereo mix with that much depth and space. It would require scientific understanding of sound recording. Second, immersive audio has always been the preferred playback system for anyone that has an interest in music recording on an artistic level(not just fashion and celebrity worship) It's not gatekeeping but it is an attempt to bring quality back into the recorded music space. Let the fashion icons make their hit records from their bedroom while the rest of us enjoy good music on an incredible playback system that recreates music more vividly than real life.

    The furthest I will go is 4.1 Listening to music is 2.1 that is it. I refuse to stick speakers everywhere and look at it as a joke. In reality what really is the amount of people having an Atmos system. The best thing as a consumer that I have done is not be in the apple dictatorship. Apple has become 1984. As for having sound moving around you... the song (Love you like a ball and chain) is amazing and it is just Stereo. In the end free yourselves and dump Apple.

    • @SeawellStudios
      @SeawellStudios 5 дней назад

      Sounds like you didn’t watch the whole video. That’s fine, I know it’s long but if you think it’s empty it sounds like you probably skipped around. One of the major points of the video is that you can’t deliver the “proper Atmos” experience to the vast majority of users. We’re stuck with lossy streaming over headphones unfortunately. A proper atmos rig in every studio & home would probably be awesome but due to financial constraints & physical space, it’s never going to happen. That’s why, like I explained in the video, it’s not going to be worth the investment for most studios. It’s delivered to most end users on headphones, and it can be mixed by the engineer on headphones just fine.

    • @SeawellStudios

      Hey! I do, the AudioScape and the Stam Rev A clones. They are both fantastic! The thing is though, they aren't like the Bluey. For some that may be a good thing, but for me, I really enjoyed the aggressiveness of the Waves CLA-76 Bluey plug-in and was looking for that sound. I didn't realize at first that CLA's 1176 had been modded as it was repaired/maintained over the years. It is a good bit faster and a more aggressive sound than you'll get from the AudioScape or Stam. It is much more of a statement piece. Having said that, I also own a Stam ADG and quite often like the Rev A mode on that unit better than the Bluey on female vocals in particular. They are different enough where I'm happy to own both. I hope that helps!

      Yes and the difficulty in particular with Atmos is that there is a very high cost and physical space threshold that most homes and even most studio owners aren't going to be willing to make. It would have to be a night and day, easily demonstrable improvement and it just isn't.

  • @thebradgordoncomposer

    Great video. I recently had an agent suggest I learn Atmos because the film companies and commercial companies are going to require them-- which means they won't accept a submission without them. It got me nervous till I saw that Cubase lets you mix with a binaural stereo version. Not the same as 7.1.4, of course, but at least you can do it without breaking your bank. The guys I checked with just did a stereo mix But it reminds me of Surroud Sound. over ten years ago, a film company required a surround sound mix at the last second-- I had no idea how to do it. So I just selected Surround Sound Export on Cubase and sent in the tracks--- it was a just a stereo mix with blank tracks in the back. No one had a problem with it. I don't think anyone even listened to it. Sounded great on TV. My guess is that Atmos will be the same unless for IMAX theater soundtracks and movie sound effects. I have a feeling I'll do an Atmos mix using the binaural setting and then send it in. No one will listen to it. I know that sounds lazy, but I've run into this before with alternative mixes of all types. I'm mostly a composer now, and other people mix the stems anyway-- and they'll do Atmos if they have to. But for my pop music writing I'll stick to stereo mixes and then do binaural Atmos mix if they require it. I think it's just a new way to thin the submissions for licensing. I'll learn what I have to, but I'm not rebuilding my studio for this.

    In my opinion, the most common and accessible way for consumers, rather than creators, to experience Atmos is through headphones or earphones with head-tracking capabilities, such as AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. In fact, before Apple introduced spatial audio, Audeze was the first to attempt head-tracking headphones with their Mobius model. Released in 2018 (if I recall correctly), these headphones supported 7.1-channel virtual surround sound on both Windows and Mac (although not Atmos channels) and surprisingly offered ASIO channels with quite good latency in 7.1-channel mode on Windows(by usb connect). In short, they were the first headphones not only for listening but also for creating surround content. They even provided an app that collaborated with Waves’ head-tracking plugin. However, as we all know, headphones have significant limitations compared to speakers when used as primary tools by creators. They can be quite tiring for long periods of use and lack the ability to check areas like crossfades. Although binaural environments are a crucial part of immersive audio and effectively utilize ear-related effects to create a high-quality immersive experience, they still fall short compared to actual multichannel speaker setups. Looking to the future, as you mentioned, I believe we will see more convenient solutions to overcome the challenges of establishing environments like 7.1.4 or 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos/immersive setups. This doesn't necessarily mean there will be no need to build Dolby Atmos speaker systems, but I do anticipate a variety of low-budget solutions becoming available. For instance, I hope companies like Sony, Sennheiser, Audeze, Neumann, and Genelec..will release premium headphones for creators that are much lighter, have thick ear pads for long-term use with less impact on hearing and fatigue, and support 7.1.4 channels or higher with refined immersive environment and multichannel simulation. Additionally, I look forward to advanced soundbars evolving, where even without a complex Atmos speaker setup, a system with about 3-4 units can create and work within a 9.1.6 environment directly in a DAW in the near future.

    This is some pretty sound advice! Even though I do use limiting while mastering (although no more than roughly 2 dB of gain reduction) to get that extra LuFS, I always make sure I have a good crest factor on my mix before going into mastering by using methods like the ones you laid out here (and I NEVER mix with a limiter on my 2bus - I don't care if X famous engineer does it. It's only detrimental, because it weakens transients and causes unneeded intermodulation distortion).

    • @SeawellStudios
      @SeawellStudios 4 дня назад

      Thanks! Just to be clear, I also use limiting when mastering but that's usually when I'm mastering my own mixes where I haven't used limiting on the mix bus. The tips in this particular video can really help when you unfortunately do get those mixes that already hit a bunch of limiting in the mix phase. It's a shame, I really wish mix engineers that do that would stop. It really paints you into a corner that's difficult to work with. I think that certain genres like pop or electronic music might be a little more interesting for making use of atmos. But then again I was just listening to an orchestra mixed in atmos and it was great. Or take that John Mayer concert. What if it was mixed perfectly to blend the sound of the crowd and the venue with the perfect mix of the performance added but from your living room? I can see a lot of interesting uses for it. I part of the issue is people don’t really understand it well or how it can be used. Maybe as they learn more about it, it will be more appealing? I am a musician that does some recording and Im really interested in it. I have a basic setup now that I like but Im building a full atmos home theater for 7.2.4 and I cant wait to hear what it sounds like with all matching drivers. Im really hoping theres a way to monitor my recording through the home theater Im already building. Id say give it some time and people will be wiring in full atmos setups just like we have 5.1 etc already.

      @@MuxyMusic Nice! I've always thought the white of my Korby KAT was such a nice, clean and different look compared to most mics.

    Can’t wait to hear it. It’s probably the only mic I’m still itching for. The case used to be an option on the older Flea mics. I have one for one of my FleA 49s, but not the other.

    Hi Josh, first of all I would like to thank you for all the stuff you did so far (and hopefully in future) in your channel, like that sooo much! I saw in the newer vids that the 176 is not in your rack anymore and the RS 124 is back in place. So you´ve changed it back to Chandler and sold the 176? Regards Carsten

      Hi Carsten! Thanks so much for your kind words. It truly mean a lot to me that you're found the content here valuable. I am trying my best to get the 176 - Sta Level - RS124 all in here at the same time to do a side by side comparison soon. I love them all equally and to be completely transparent, I only rotate between them depending on the project I'm working on at the time. The eventual goal is to be able to financially hang on to them all at the same time. So, just know if you ever see one shifting out of the rack, it's purely financial and specific to the project I'm working on at the time, not because I've changed how I feel about any of them. I've used all 3 a ton for years now and I can't imagine ever falling out of love with any of them :)

    I thought the 660 soudned smoother and more polished on everything. 124 Sounded AMAZING on electric guitar though!! =)

    I almost always prefer DTS-HD MA tracks over Dolby Atmos tracks. I just think DTS's mixes are done better.

      I 💯 percent agree.. I like Dolby True HD as well ..I know DA is an upgrade over True HD format but it just sounds better to me..

      @@andrewalker8397 I make backups of all my purchased discs and on my backups I use Dolby Digital 5.1 640kbps. I have never been able to tell a difference compared with lossless in a blind, volume-compensated comparison. I have a fairly entry-level receiver and 5.1 setup though. I think sometimes the lossless tracks sound like there is more "going on," but that is more a mastering difference than anything.

      @@andrewalker8397 I think the mix makes a lot more of a difference than format. I use an Xbox One S as a disc player and have the audio output set to Dolby Digital and I think it sounds fine. I just find a lot of Dolby TrueHD mixes to be sort of weak compared to the DTS-HD MA ones. I think DTS gooses the mix a bit to make it sound louder and heavier. Dolby is supposed to be more neutral.

    I got the Peter Gabriel new album and tried the Atmos disc. It has some rear and top sound, I don't have a professional set up, but I thought the dark side cd had a better sound than the Blu-ray Atmos mix. If you can obtain an Atmos experience through stereo headphones, is that not the same with a good 2 channel hifi? I'm not sold on it and already have issues with Amazon music Atmos working on a firestick, but not through the Atmos enabled TVs own app through eArc. Too many complications, even outside of physical media 🙃

    I really enjoyed A. I felt like I was in the song. My second fav was a toss up between C, and E. Ultimately I think I liked the upper end harmonics of C more. ACE. In. That. Order.
