Acuna's last 28 PA for the Mets including the postseason, 5 for 28, 1 HR. Last 16 PA? 2 singles in 16 PA. That's much more likely to be what you'll get from Acuna until he's able to hit AA or AAA pitching in the Mets organization, which he hasn't done so far. ---Other teams are well aware of this. The Padres aren't giving up King or Cease for a guy whose OPS in his last 754 AA and AAA PA was .640 in Acuna, and a middle reliever in Butto.

So Stanek 'rises to the occasion' but gave up runs in 3 of his last 5 Sept 2024 appearances (a .907 OPS against in those 5 games) as the Mets were fighting for a postseason berth, gave up runs in 3 of his 7 2024 postseason appearances (3.92 FIP), and put up a 6.75 ERA in the 2023 postseason.

I think Buto and Megil could surprise us this spring. Buto has Seth Lugo potential and Megil was great down the stretch, because he made some adjustments and added a highly effective sinker. I've never been high on Megil, but, you can't deny that his numbers in the second half were eye opening.

Megill's last 6 starts---and it was great to see it wasn't because he was getting lucky on balls in play (.291 over that stretch). I'd be interested to know whether the Mets think his HR suppression over those starts is repeatable, 2 HR in 31 innings. His Sept 30th start was a disappointment, though. 8H, 2HR, 3ER in 5.2 ip.

With this year's collection of pitchers, we really gotta believe that Stearns' pitching lab will be able to duplicate the magic of 2024. @@Metro-vq3zl Uh, .. what? I think you have that backwards. Megill suffered a "strain" a couple of years ago that sidelined him for a few months. Montas, on the other hand, had an injury that required surgery that same year and cost him most of the season. Prior to injury, Montas had a solid career ... and actually finished 6th in Cy Young voting in 2021. Megill has not done anything close to that in his career. And I don't dislike Megill. I hope he has a season like Peterson's last year, where he finally breaks through. But the notion that Megill is "light years better than Montas" is completely unsupportable. And if, as you suggest, we just want to go by ERA: Montas's career ERA is 4.09, Megill's career ERA is 4.56.

@dashx1103 lol how about what have you done for me lately. Megill 4.04 last year Montas 4.55 You are flip flopping stats and you're own words hurt you based on last years numbers. Yes they were both hurt and never denied that. Megill played hurt cause Mets needed him. Megill even started opening day years ago when all starters went down. If Montas chips his fingernail he won't pitch this year. No more arguing. I'll let you get the last word. All I know is Megill getting better and better and Montas most overpaid player this year. Well chat again a month into the season. I do once again love how you flip stats in Montas favor. Montas was very good at one time. Megills numbers were better last year. TTYS. Get the last word my friend.

why not just sign Jose Quintana. he pitched 170 innings, kept ERA under 4 and finished strong. He wouldn't cost draft picks, he cetainly would be more promising than Montes or Canning etc.

Quintana much better than Montas. Montas most overpaid player in MLB. Mark my words Montes mid era of 6.55 about 1-4 before Mets realized they made a mistake. Would love to know who wanted Montes so bad..... Cohen or Stearns? No other team was offering close to what Mets paid Montas. That's why he jumped on deal so fast. Guarantee you half of MLB didn't want Montas for even minimum salary.... Either Stearns did deal and got a huge kickback or Cohen insured Montas for double or more. Either way something fishy going on.

Agreed. Lefty also. Eats innings. Bigtime groundball pitcher. I don't get it just don't get signing Montas for a ton of money over Quintana????

Easy answer there, Mets are Open to trading for (if the price is right) a younger pitcher who either has years of control or they would look to extend to be a part of the current rotation and future. Quintana doesn’t fit that. Quintana fit in the same category as Montas, short term and Mets viewed Montas > Quintana in terms of upside for this year.

Mets need to forget about Cease and King to bring us back Kumar Rocker at the trade deadline. They should also give Anthony Gose a real shot at the bullpen.

@@Jurtexual I have to believe that Texas would demand Sproat as part of any deal. After that, at least one additional top 10 prospect and another sweetener. But that’s IF they wanted to move Rocker, and I can’t for the life of me believe they want to move him. Doesn’t make sense. He’s a young star with years of control. Why would Houston want to trade him?

Butto should be a starter. He's legitimately the fourth or fifth BEST option to the starting rotation. Its not fair to degrade his future value just because he moved into a bullpen role because they desperately needed his help there last year and performed admirably. He's still young and has greatest value as a starter.
