Sorry dude, but you are completely wrong in Burnes. His wife just had twins, he’s from Arizona (tax free state) and he was offered more elsewhere and wanted to stay home. Sterns likely kicked the tires and knew he wanted to be home. Accept that some players prefer family over their professional lives.
Nah, Dumpster Dave doesn’t sign top of rotation type pitchers.
@@jerseygrit5402 it’s been made very clear why he signed in Arizona.
And $300 mil+ doesn't hurt anyone's feelings...!!
Arizona is not a tax-free state. It imposes a flat 2.5% income tax. You may consider it a low tax state, but definitely not a no-tax state like Florida or Nevada.
I think it ultimately came down to burnes wanting to settle in Arizona where he lives
Nice lifestyle out there for sure...
Let him enjoy the sweltering heat 🥵
Makes sense. Can’t complain if you’re getting $200m+ to play for the team near which you live.
YES! He has 2 newborns. He was offered more money but wanted to be home.
who offered him more and how much more??
Love the pod Ryan, and no offense, but you either trust Stearns or you don’t. Whether or not you think he made a mistake is completely inconsequential and you said it yourself - Stearns knows Burnes better than probably any other front office.
This contract will age terribly
Good point for sure
6 years for Burnes? I don’t know why the Mets weren’t on it.
@@gaurillainsert Soto contract here 😂
@@gaurillaLike Soto's??
❤❤❤Excellent points Ryan ! We now need a front line starter !
Solid insights Ryan. Keep bringing us all the Mets exciting news. Happy Holidays.
Great insight? Is you kiddng? Homie sounds like a panicky wfan caller!
There's a high probability that Montas, Holmes, Blackburn, Canning and Megill will have a collective e.r.a. over 5.00.
We have to hope Senga, Manea, and Peterson are Aces not looking great
Still can trade for Valdez and Castillo. Would love Valdez and to sign him 4-5 yrs for next yr. Mets are bridging this yr for sproat, tong and blade
Holmes will win NL Cy Young as a METS starter...I doubt Blackburn & Megill make the Team
Not with Hefner as pitching coach. How quickly you guys forget that Severino, Manaea, and Quintana were literally reclamation projects and all 3 pitched great last year, even having stretches where they pitched like actual aces. I trust Hefner's input in signing who we have. They know what they're doing. And you forget Sasaki is still out there.
@@marcoslaureano5562 Great Points @marco...!!
I hear you, but at some point, you have to trust the GM who got you where you never expected to be in his first year. In Sterns, we trust.
N u really think he’s goin to get lucky again? One of these days u got to go for the sure thing n not gamble on question marks,
Talking about the players that was there before Stearns? Going to a season when the Mets in world series mode with questions mark on the Mets entire rotation. The Mets got real lucky last year, and can't keep banking on that
I’m no CPA but NY’s top tax bracket is 10.9% vs AZ flat tax of 2.5%, so $210M in AZ would be about $228M in NY. Plus him going home and his history with Stearns, Mets would’ve had to go to $245 for 6 or $260+ for 7 or 8. And he still might’ve said no!
Burnes has TIES to the bay area, but he actually lives in the Scottsdale AZ area,
No one spending on Pete more then 20 million aav he trying to play the mets
Man. It's a missed opportunity for the Mets. Corbin Burnes is an ace. The Mets needed it. And they just can't beat the Dodgers. Real talk 💯⚾
nah we better
@@FlypSyde1111 Nah, don’t be delusional and clownish.
Its so hard to tell. Pitching contracts work out 1 out of 5 times or less. Stearns knows this. Better to find pitching bargains than pitching stars for contracts 200 million or more
Now they might not even get past the Dbacks
@@FlypSyde1111better than who? You have a triple A pitching staff.
Corbin Burns lives in Scottsdale and his wife just had twins. I think that played a huge role.
In Stearns I trust.
1) Sterans knows what he’s doing re: pitching
2) Burnes wanted to be close to home. Said home also has appreciably lower taxes, which bridges some of the gap
No, but if the Mets could have beaten the Red Sox’ offer for Garrett Crochet, and refused to, THEN they blew it. Stearns’ starting pitching strategy makes me extremely nervous, but I also don’t like megadeals for guys in their 30s unless they’re elite bat-missers, which Burnes hasn’t been for a couple of years now. I’m keeping my expectations for 2025 in check. A ridiculous number of things went right in 2024, including everyone on the Braves getting hurt, Jose Iglesias having a career year out of nowhere, Mark Vientos wildly overperforming his expected stats, almost everyone except Senga mostly being healthy, etc. Soto helps, but they still need a lot of things to go right, and everyone’s a year older.
I wouldn't kill myself if they missed the playoffs next year so long as they are in the thick of it. One thing I know is that this team will be loaded in 2026.
@@fr2ncm9 Maybe, but next year’s FA class is pretty underwhelming, and I’m not nearly as high on their prospects (particularly their position players) as most Mets fans.
The Mets couldn't compete with the Red Sox offer for Crochet. The Red Sox system is stacked and the Mets really only have 3 tradable assets in Sproat, Jett, and Baty
Crochet signing by the Red Sox will turn out to be among the worst, if not THE WORST, signing in this off-season...While the Buehler signing may turn out to be one of the best signings
@@stanfromwestport2024 Yankee fan, I'm thinking opposite. Although he was good in World Series Buehlers fastball looks shot.
I agree with you. I'm worried after Burnes signed... Now I feel we need both Pete and Bregman more than before. Or still try for Luis Castillo
We really missed out on Blake Snell twice…he signed so early this free agency
Wow you are right Ryan !!
I trust Stearns in pretty much every scenario but ESPECIALLY this one. If he was out on Burns, there is a reason. You said yourself he knows him as well as anyone.
Dbacks getting Burnes leaves the Giants the cash they were going to spend on him. They are the only team truly might spendnit on Alonso. So this inaction might hurt more than you thought!
That’s an interesting point. SF offered Burnes more money than Arizona. They are willing to spend. Alonso? Bregman? Gotta think SF makes at least one big signing.
I think SF is a very possible place for Pete to sign...Boras got the Chapman deal done with the Giants during the 2024 season...Its not as if Scott Boras doesn't have the right phone # to reach the SF Giants' decision maker(s)...Giants are in a tough spot to try to compete w/LAD and to keep up with ARI & SD to challenge in their Division for Wild Card, etc.
@LI2...I gave you credit on Wardy's Channel for your excellent take on the SF Giants NEEDING to do something, i.e. Going after Pete IS the something the SF Giants could very well do...I will also mention your take on WFAN Joe Benigno this morning, if I get on the air...!!
Sterns where you at? why haven’t we signed Pete and or a ace yet ? i am not a huge fan of sterns at all
Our pitching just isn’t there. Manaea was gassed in the playoffs. All these other project guys are gonna be the same. And Senga just hasn’t earned our trust. Losing on Burnes was huge. If we don’t get a top tier arm we just don’t compete with the Dodgers.
“Senga just hasn’t earned our trust” the man came off on injury, before that coming off a season where he finished in the top runnings for the CY Young. Not sure what you’re talking about.
Taxes matter
Stearns doesn’t believe in handing out more than 3 years to pitchers. It is what it is. Maybe Burnes has a lot of mileage and they’ll be too much wear and tear? Just a thought. Either way I’m happy with Stearns. I think as far as pitching goes our farm will need to develop. David Sprout and hopefully the kid we called up last season becomes a solid starter at some point.
Who's David Sprout? Someone the Mets have hidden in the minors?
Take care everyone!
What this may also signal is that the Mets are confident they can land Sasaki.
Maybe he just wanted to be closer to home in the west coast
Ive been watching you for a month and I heard you say this over and over. I had no idea and I waa working on something else.
Hi Ryan, it's unfortunate but the Mets must have known that Burns wanted a long-term and the Mets aren't willing to sign a pitcher unless he is young to a long-term deal.
It is reported that Burnes turned down more money from San Francisco and Toronto, fwiw.
No, we didn’t blow it. That deal will look alright for the first 2-3 years, but it’ll be a bad deal by 2028. We would absolutely blow it if we didn’t pick the phone up today to ask about Monty. He could be a very cheap get, and I’ll bet last year was an anomaly.
He wanted to be on the West Coast. That’s all ya need to know.
Nah, NY wasn’t serious about signing him. Everything else is just excuses for failure to sign.
@@jerseygrit5402get over it he took less to stay home
Lets go D-BACKS
D-back fans suck
Why the Mets did'nt sign Tanner Scott ?
Be the evil empire, sign Trevor Bauer. Manfred black balling a cy young pitcher. Steve Cohen can be Palpatine
Our payroll is 276 right now two years ago it was 360 million and not only that they can always trade Jeff McNeil and Starling Marte to clear 37 million! Right now the Dodgers are at approximately 354 million for the payroll! We’re not competing if we don’t add I would even say two big bats and at least one great bullpen arm and then after that odds and ends like Jesse winner and Jose
Marte has already been traded
No, we didn’t blow it. We would have to pay more because of the taxes and because he lives in AZ. That deal will look alright for the first 2-3 years, but it’ll be a bad deal by 2028. We would absolutely blow it if we didn’t pick the phone up today to ask about Monty. He could be a very cheap get, and I’ll bet last year was an anomaly.
I don’t think Burnes signs with the Mets for what the D-backs signed him for. They would have to make it worthwhile for him and i think that means more than what Fried got with the Yankees. Trust what the front office is doing and be patient.
Sterns has done a very underwhelming job outside of Soto which was Cohen’s deal. Since signing Soto the Mets have re-signed Manaea and that’s it. Very underwhelming & they are not signing Bregman & who the hell knows what is going to happen with Alonso.
When they signed a releiver to convert to a starter with no conceivable reason except to save money, the Mets were obviously never seriously in on Burns. They just needed to kick the tires to say they tried.
I own a house in North Scottsdale. 6 months of the year it's like living on the sun. And the people are the rudest and most uneducated in the country.
99% of the time when i see people claim others are uneducated, we are dealing with a Democrat
he and his family live in Arizona
Hey Ryan,
Stearns getting a lot of credit but if the Mets do not play well and the pitching falls apart then Stearns needs to be questioned.
I think you can’t sign Soto and then go soft on all other big arms.
We have to be honest and admit that Mets did get a lot of luck with there arms and that doesn’t always happen.
Stearns to me I feel needed to get a big arm.
Mets have missed on all other big
F/A parts. This rotation is not good. C+ at best.
I think they feel they can win by finding players that once did well and fix them. No no no! You also need to grab big parts when available.
Totally agree with you Ryan, the Mets blew it in not signing Burnes, especially at that price and length in years.
WE NEED WORLD SERIES LIKE ROTATION
Stearns has led the Brewers to the playoffs four out of the last 5 years. Is he going to make mistakes, yes, but I think he can make this team a a perennial contender
The objection for the Mets is to win a chip now, making the playoffs is not the goal.
Ryan: Maybe because David Stearns DOES know more than anyone about Corbin Burnes is the reason why the Mets were not in play for him.
Or, Burnes WANTED to be in ARI...as is widely reported
Or Burnes is still pissed about his arbitration with Stearns all those years ago and didn’t want to get in bed with him. It takes 2 to tango.
of course they missed out. buying soto is a waste with this rotation
no way he has a sub 3 era for the next 3 years
I feel like this starting rotation simply isn't good enough to really compete with the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Phillies. There are a bunch of question marks on top of that, that the Mets either created by taking chances on guys like Canning or by not sigining a reliable frontline starter or two.
Damn. I agree with you Ryan. I wanted Burns because our rotation is just ok. Our pitching is more on hope. Dodgers for instance, have a rotation that revolves around hope and a contingency plan for if their plan A pitchers don’t pan out. At this point, I’d sign Jack Flaherty. He seems to have at least number 2-3 pitching stuff. Hope Stearns is getting to cute man. We also need 2-3 serious bullpen pieces.
I just think, after Soto, Mets are not aggressive enough.
Missed opportunity
Things going to fall into place hope we get Pete back and roki
Roki??? Really????

Stearns to me I feel needed to get a big arm.
The Blue Jays and the Giants both had higher offers on the table, but he went with the Diamondbacks because of the income Tax situation
I think he lives in Arizona. Huge advantage.
Talk about a Hometown discount 😩
Mets would’ve had to outbid the Diamondbacks by quite a bit. Probably would’ve had to given him 240/6 years to beat out the Diamondbacks 210/6. He already has a home in Arizona and can now stay there year around because of spring training being there too. I don’t even think he would’ve went to the Dodgers have they offered the same as the Diamondbacks
❤❤excellent points thank you !
Yeah, it definitely seems like he wants to be in Arizona, can’t say the same for New York. Can’t blame Stearns for that, he would have had to up his bid by a ton like you said.
Nah, dude is 30 already. Six years? Hell no. I trust Stearns and Hefner. I'd much rather Sasaki. And you guys forget Peterson pitched like an ace last year.
A lot of you make it seem like being 30 is a death sentence, It's annoying as hell. Pitchers age a little better than position players because they don't play everyday. Jesus christ
Oh no he's 30 omggggg. Being 30 is fine. Mets should've offered something similar and missed out on makin our rotation actually great
Mookie is not a good defensive SS. Let’s relax on Dodgers. We do need another big starter. Go get Castillo and run the contact out. Jett and someone else.
Burnes bought a mansion in Arizona in 2023 and wanted to sign with a west coast team.
The Mets don’t do secure, pitching deal stages though
signing pitchers especially to 200 million contracts is far more riskier. I don't think it is a big loss for the mets
Mets will be a 3rd place team at best, Phillies hav an ace, Mets do not, Braves hav a better lineup
Ofc they did. Buf im sure Burnes living in Arizona had a ton to do with it
No. The question is, did Burnes miss the boat on the Mets.
He gave a discount to go home to Arizona. Who knows how much the Mets would have needed to offer to get him.
I'm fine with them not signing burnes I believe in Stearns
Who’s pitching gm 7 of the playoffs? I don’t see that guy
@slapshot68 menea most likely
That's what you get when you get a GM who shops at the dollar store ' Stearns is worst than the wilpons ' keep getting minor league deals ' unbelievable
NYM $ isn’t unlimited! Still need to sign Pete
As we stand today. Dodgers Padres Diamondbacks, signed Corbin and led league in runs scored, the nl central winner, Braves Phillies r better than Mets. All Mets have essentially done is exchange Alonso for Soto. Manea was on team last yr. No bullpen upgrade, no dh. No playoffs.
That’s what I keep saying. Mets keep letting the best Free Agent Signings outside of Juan Soto go. What’s going on with the Mets? Does this team want to be a Superteam or no? Mets also need to go way into their farm system and way better player development…
I don't trust Stearns.
Sterns is looking at 3 Mets prospects to fill rotation for the 5-6 year long term.. Christian Scott Sproat and Tidwell.. that’s why they didn’t go after Burnes or any other top free agent pitcher…
I read that Burnes wanted to relocate to the West Coast so the Mets didn't appear to have a shot.
There is no way that not giving a 30 year old pitcher 200+ mil is a mistake
If it was under 200, sure but holy hell I’m glad we didn’t get that contract
Also, there’s no guarantee he even takes those opt outs
Maybe the Mets think they are getting Sasaki? Means you don’t need Burnes.
Let sterns cook thats why hes the president while you're a RUclipsr fam 😭
Why not bring back Jose Quintana at this point?
Not to worry Mets fans, we have Corbin Burnes at home with Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes
Not just the Dodgers, Phillys have much better pitching too
Let.Stearns cook! I will not doubt Stearns unless the Mets falls apart in 25!
The Mets missed a great chance there. It was reasonable contract for any big market team.
rotation look likSenga, Manea, Senga, Manea, Flahery or Pivetta, Peterson, Valdez or Castillo
Velocity down a red flag
He was cheaper than snell 35 a year vs 36.3
LOL...really...?? $36.3 mil vs. $35 mil makes a difference...?? LOL
No, they didn't miss the beat. They got Manaea, Soto and a whole bunch of pitchers. I wouldn't mind another SP, but they still have to resign Alonso as well.
Maybe its for the best, maybe its for a reason, just maybe, Sasaki...
Clay homes as a starter is bad works
Sign Pete ,Iglesias and Bregman and hope we can score 7 runs a game!!! LET'S GO METS!!!!!!
So you guys paid 800 plus million dollar for Soto but you can't pay for a good pitcher. Lmao 🤣 this team is going to be a joke especially with Clay Holmes as a starting pitcher. There are alot of what if in your starting rotation. You will be lucky to make it to the playoff. You will never get passed the Dodgers for the next five years and by then Soto will be owed 55 million a year to be a DH. This contract will not end well.
JACK FLAHERTY OR NICK PAVETA, GET ONE OF THEM
Mets are that team that only gives u 1 good Xmas present and the rest stocking stuffers lol
Another hot take. You're slipping.
So the Mets sign the best hitter in baseball but they do very little to improve their pitching. Signing Corbin Burnes would have made them World Series favorites. Makes no sense.
Burnes wanted to be on the West Coast.
It’s odd, though, that he turned down more money from San Francisco.
@@dashx1103 Arizona beats the heck out of SF lifestyle-wise...Plus taxes are a HUGE factor against Cali...$10s of millions over the life of the deal

Mets should trade baty for Bobby miller straight
No need for Burnes when you know you will get Sasaki...METS pitching staff will be super-strong on Opening Day 2025
Why is everybody OK when boras try’s to fleece the Mets
Stearns blew it..If you want to sign an as starter today don't expect to offer only 3 years contract, that is not going to happen..At least the Mets supouse to sign Burnes or another quality FA starter and get another via trade..Now with a dubious rotation we can't compete with Phillies and Braves for the National East pennant..And not only starters, the pen looks weak unimproved. Hoffman, Stanek are waiting for a call..Get some good arms to the pen and stop to add "marginal " pitchers over 5.00 ERA to come to spring training..Phatetic...
I don’t think so, tax purposes woulda inflated our deal with him. The dbacks have had a bad track record with Greinke, bumgarber etc. but the dbacks are still a serious contender even in the nl west
It's simple, Corbin burns lives in Arizona and he's wife just gave birth to twins.
