I think Buto and Megil could surprise us this spring. Buto has Seth Lugo potential and Megil was great down the stretch, because he made some adjustments and added a highly effective sinker. I've never been high on Megil, but, you can't deny that his numbers in the second half were eye opening.

Megill's last 6 starts---and it was great to see it wasn't because he was getting lucky on balls in play (.291 over that stretch). I'd be interested to know whether the Mets think his HR suppression over those starts is repeatable, 2 HR in 31 innings. His Sept 30th start was a disappointment, though. 8H, 2HR, 3ER in 5.2 ip.

Cease got pretty handled by the Dodgers in the playoffs last year, not that King was too much better, but he was in his 1 appearance.
Your points on being able to possibly extend him are really what gives him the edge for me.
I'd rather sign Cease next off-season than trade prospect capital for him now unless we arrive at the trade deadline and find our pitching solutions haven't really worked out.

So Soto and Minter are definitely upgrades but did the Mets do enough to make it further than they did last year? If anything we have the same team (not knowing if Pete comes back) who made it far but fell short. The dodgers who won it all, added pieces that definitely make their team better. As of now I don’t think the Mets have done enough at least for the season coming up to go farther than they did last year. Hopefully we can make some trades to upgrade the team, especially in our rotation, we have to many question marks their.

You left out Holmes, who I believe will thrive as a METS starter...So much so, that I believe Holmes will win a Cy Young as a METS starter...He has that kind of talent...Chris Sale is a great example of a very good pitcher having his ups & downs in BOS going to ATL and becoming a Cy Young pitcher...Similarly, Holmes has immense talent, but had his ups & down with NYY and is ready to emerge as a star

@@stanfromwestport2024 I like Holmes, and I think it is quite possible that he'll convert into being a very good starter. That said, I think the comparison to Sale is a bit over the top. Sale, unlike Holmes, had a history of being one of the elite pitchers in baseball over time. Holmes has nothing like that in his background. Doesn't mean he can't excel, but predicting a Cy Young for him is a stretch.

Acuna's last 28 PA for the Mets including the postseason, 5 for 28, 1 HR. Last 16 PA? 2 singles in 16 PA. That's much more likely to be what you'll get from Acuna until he's able to hit AA or AAA pitching in the Mets organization, which he hasn't done so far. ---Other teams are well aware of this. The Padres aren't giving up King or Cease for a guy whose OPS in his last 754 AA and AAA PA was .640 in Acuna, and a middle reliever in Butto.

Stanek had a great late-season/Playoffs run...With Diaz, Minter & Stanek, the METS have power pitchers in pen for just about any situation...As I keep saying, the LAD and Dave Roberts are redefining MLB pitching tactics...Soon gone are the days of starter, middle & closer in favor of using more pitchers and deploying them in different more non-traditional ways...This new paradigm was on display in 2024 NLDS Playoffs when Dave Roberts used 8 pitchers in the October 9th LAD 8 - 0 shutout of SD...Roberts used his closers Kopech & Vesia back-to-back in the 3rd through the 5th innings...No pitcher pitched longer than 5 outs, or fewer than 2 outs...David Stearns, Carlos Mendoza and Jeremy Hefner understand this new paradigm and are stocking up pitchers accordingly...

No other team was offering close to what Mets paid Montas. That's why he jumped on deal so fast. Guarantee you half of MLB didn't want Montas for even minimum salary.... Easy answer there, Mets are
Open to trading for (if the price is right) a younger pitcher who either has years of control or they would look to extend to be a part of the current rotation and future. Quintana doesn’t fit that. Quintana fit in the same category as Montas, short term and Mets viewed Montas > Quintana in terms of upside for this year.

I love Cohen and love Stearns yet don't see how they paid this washed up injury prone player so much???? Maybe Cohen is so brilliant he insured Montas for double what he paid for him. @stanfromwestport2024 first of all I truly think Cohen is best owner in baseball. Second I like Stearns a lot just think he underestimates how important starting pitching is. With that said time will prove they did not do their due dillagence. Montas will no doubt get rocked and I'll go so far as saying he will have a 6.55 plus era.
As far as Montas getting injured you may be right and Mets did their due dillagence. Just curious tho do you want Montas on the mound if he starts 1-4 with an era over 6? Please answer that simple question. Would you want Montas on the mound with an era over 6 or not. Ya see the Dodgers who I detest get rid of guys like that right away. The Mets on the other hand will pitch someone like carrasco to the teams death.
I really do hope I'm wrong. Rarely but occasionally.... I hope I am wrong.
Cohen is awesome, Stearns smart with hitters.... I do think they need someone to handle their pitching decisions.
