  • Should the New York Mets pursue Spencer Torkelson to fill their first base void?
    This episode dives into the Mets' rumored interest in the former first overall pick and explores potential trade scenarios. Host Ryan Finkelstein breaks down Torkelson's struggles with the Detroit Tigers and analyzes his hitting profile, including his power potential and weaknesses against off-speed pitches.
    The discussion shifts to Max Scherzer's potential return to the Mets, as the team was one of eight to scout the veteran pitcher recently.
    Finkelstein examines how Scherzer might fit into the Mets' rotation plans and compares his potential impact to other options like Paul Blackburn and Griffin Canning.
    The episode also touches on the Mets' signing of Adbert Alzolay to a two-year minor league deal, highlighting the potential long-term value of this move.

    Hey Ryan, huge fan of the show, been subbed on an old account since 22. Why aren't the mets targeting flaherty but attending scherzer? Also would like tork, as he needs to get out of Detroit. Maybe a baty for tork would be a good change of scenery for both first round picks. Idk if he was non tendered or not but still

    • @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 6 дней назад

      Because Flaherty would require a much bigger investment, while being a huge risk. That’s why his market has been so limited. He’s good when his fastball is sitting 94, he’s in good shape, but when he’s throwing 92, it’s often trouble. There’s risk with Scherzer, but he doesn’t require a multi-year deal. A reunion with Max actually makes a ton of sense for the Mets.

    • @HomelessMosquito
      @HomelessMosquito 6 дней назад

      Nvm about baty I was blindly going along

    • @FunktronicsDC
      @FunktronicsDC 5 дней назад

      @@IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar is Flaherty a much bigger investment? At least years wise on the contract? He's still on the market. I think he's looking at 1 year deals at this point, and the Mets can easily take that type of a risk.

    • @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 5 дней назад

      @ If Flaherty is willing to take a 1-year deal, then you’re absolutely right, but the reporting all along has been that he wants a multi-year deal. Of course, that’s why he hasn’t had much of a market, so at some point, he might have to pivot. But I don’t think he would pivot to a one-year deal; I think it would be more like what Jordan Montgomery or even Cody Bellinger got, where it’s 2-3 years at a fairly high AAV, with opt-outs.

    • @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 5 дней назад

      @HomelessMosquito Baty does need a change of scenery though, you’re right about that. I wouldn’t trade him for Torkelson, who was always overrated IMO, doesn’t have positional flexibility, etc., but I do think Baty needs a team with better hitting development. For all the progress the Mets have made on the pitching dev side, they still lag on the hitting dev side, and according to analysts I generally trust (like Jarrett Seidler of Baseball Prospectus), Eric Chavez is not a particularly good hitting coach.

      He’s priced himself out. The Mets stand on Pete is actually great for baseball. This way Scott Boras doesn’t take advantage and over value his players. He’s got two unsigned notable players in Bergman and Alonso both for the same reason. They both received terrible advice and The Astros moved on quickly! The Mets should’ve moved on filling that 1st place role a while ago

      There’s no bidding on Pete Alonso. If Pete’s team gets an offer at market value but doesn’t want to accept it so they can explore other options than that’s on Pete and his team.
      We haven’t heard of any other team making a compelling offer so what’s the point in bidding against yourself when you know Pete doesn’t have any other offer out there.
      It’s like buying an old car. KBB says your 130k mile car is worth $3000 so I’ll offer you close to that number. But you the owner might want $12,000 and the cheapest you’ll go is $10,500. If no one else is putting up better offers than me, then enjoy depreciating your car.

    I like taking a flyer on Torkelson. I can’t see him costing all that much and I think it’s possible that a change of scenery helps him figure it out. His 2023 season wasn’t bad and he’s only 25 right now.

    • @DennisK-q9g
      @DennisK-q9g 4 дня назад

      That’s why there will be no trade, Detroit has no reason to give him away, as he has an option left, so he can be sent to the minors. They are mad at him for not making the adjustments they recommended, but they do know he could still work out if he ever makes those adjustments. So he is not going to be traded for the Mets #20 prospect as most Mets fans on here are suggesting will happen.

    @vincentsebastiano1058 5 дней назад

    Mets are interested in many players who sign with someone else. Seems that after the Soto/Minea signings there is no real appetite to spend or we would have Tanner Scott rather than Minter. Still don’t understand why they don’t offer 75 for 3 years and make it a final offer. That’s a slight over pay for a homegrown favorite and if he turns it down you can immediately pivot to Plan B which should have been Tanner Scott. Don’t understand why they seem to be lowballing players after an unexpected playoff run. The 765 million dollar Soto deal seems to curbed their enthusiasm for payroll increase but with Pete( or similar production)) the team is moderately better than last year. Forget the Dodgers, we still have the Phillies and Braves in front of us. Sorry we didn’t offer Christian Walker 65 for 3 years, his first base defense offsets the power of Pete a great deal

    A one-year deal to bring Max back makes a ton of sense. Torkelson, no thanks. The Mets don’t need projects on the offensive side, as they have subpar hitting dev, and a subpar hitting coach in Eric Chavez (according to Baseball Prospectus’s Jeffrey Paternostro and Jarrett Seidler, J.D. Martinez really was the Mets’ de facto hitting coach in 2024). They ARE equipped to take on pitching projects, however, and they’ve certainly done that-perhaps too much.

  • @ddt3831

    I'll tell you why I'd be on board with bringing Max back. Number one, the Mets have enough depth that they wouldn't have to depend on him - whatever he can give us would be gravy - likely, quality gravy. The other reason is Max Scherzer is a winner - we all saw the influence he had on the clubhouse, and the rest of the pitching staff - the team won 100 games in his only full season as a Met. Just his presence on the team would have a huge impact.
