Spoof Spoof Spoof Spoof Spoof and Slahal In My Game Room.
Here's the line-up:
00:00 INTRO
00:34 Spoof - A traditional guessing game with hidden coins and player elimination, not only a child's game but also popular with the British Armed Forces.
02:34 Slahal - A very spoof-like game played for many generations by the Salish people of northwest America. It's like the coin spoof but with teams and sets of small bones.
04:09 Spoof - A 1918 card game from Milton Bradley that is sort of musical chairs with cards and wooden "batons". It was subtitled "the cheer-up game" and featuring Peruvian native artwork.

How do you play Gala at your house? (Same name, different game.)

I came across Gala while researching a different historic game, but when I came back to it I found something completely different! Gala is called "the Farmer's Chess." found in lists of Chess variants, but it's really not very chess-like. The pieces change movement style depending on where they are on the board, and there are strict rules as to when captures can be made. Each player has two "Ga...
Uncle Wiggily is a classic board game license, but could have been so much more.
Просмотров 21721 день назад
The charming Uncle Wiggily stories were a great hit a century ago, but you don't hear so much about them any more. As with most successful characters from children's stories, there was a board game (actually a few). The age of licensed toys helped to immortalize many cartoon characters (you know who I mean) and Uncle Wiggily was in the race as well. The game wasn't anything revolutionary - just...

The race game "Zohn Ahl" - a Kiowa tradition for many generations.

This game is indeed a classic throughout the first nations of the great plains. Not only the Kiowa, but the Comanche, Arapaho, Apache, and known as far south as the Zuni and Pueblo tribes. The game was often played as two teams (usually a women's game) with moves determined by stick dice. One of the casting sticks, known as the "sa-he", would grant an extra turn. Another game I only discovered because my wife and her sister had this growing up: the Mork & Mindy Card Game (1978), on BGG if you want to see it. This one has "players minus one" number of Styrofoam Eggs, where if someone plays a "Na-no Na-no" card, everyone shouts the phrase and grabs an eggs. the one that comes out eggless gets a penalty, which means drawing more cards. There's also a penalty if you don't say "Shazbot" after getting a penalty. (sounds cyclical). Looks at the BGG entry, I hadn't remembered how Mork and Mindy were drawn in a Mad Magazine caricature style.

Many say the original dice lot had four dice that would output zero or one each of them. That means chances are: 1/16 for zeroes, 4/16 for ones, 6/16 for twos, 4/16 for threes and 1/16 for fours. A single four sided dice has equal chances for each possible result, which is 25%. Let alone the lack of one possible result. So, that four dice lot cannot in anyways be replaced by a single four sided dice.

I had this game as a child in the 70s. I loved the art, and my board had the nicely curved and intertwined path that made me pay attention to the number sequence as well as spark my imagination. I seem to recall the small rhyming poems were also a part of my version. I saw the game on the store shelves again in the mid-2000s and was excited to get a copy again and play with my kids. I was terribly disappointed to see the simplified art and pathway. Took away any real sense of adventure. I don't understand why they did that.

The cost difference varies a lot. The bigger boards, color printing, and bigger boxes add around 30% to the base cost, but the larger boards often require more pegs as well. Yes. The big "deluxe" box is 6x9x1.5 inches, the small "travel" box is 6x4.5x1.5 inches, and the new "half box" is 3x4x1.5 inches. Standard paper sizes start with "Letter Size" which is 8.5 x 11 - a little different than A4 but essentially serves the same function.

As a thirty year veteran of pc adventure games, though, I should address the significance of the 'Tower of Hanoi' puzzle. I love that thing, as I readily understand what must be done. Most modern video gamers disagree. This one puzzle is the bane of videogame players. It shows up, time and again. The only worse fate is the dreaded "sliding tiles" puzzle, aka: The "15 Puzzle." While Pah'Tum might be a fictional game, the pc adventure game series 'AGON...<Insert subtitle Here>.' is very real and a great source to experience other "ancient games" with a computer opponent and a basically accurate ruleset, as far as historians can tell. That said, the "Agon Episodic Adventures series" (which has multiple alternate titles, bundles, and a weird remake if you search online--but this is what wikipedia chooses to call it now,) is loaded with heavy-handed Christian theology and awkward Old Testament quotes. I'm not sure what the original intent was, but it can be off-putting. But, if you want a basic understanding of ancient game design like Tablut, Fanorona, or Senet, this video game series has the basics in a very accessible form. It might not be historically accurate (especially Senet,) but they are all playable. Great channel, btw. You hooked me with your review of TOS Star Trek's 1970s board game. Not everything from the past is sacrosanct, but we can learn new things. Thank you.

I think I have mentioned this before in a previous post but In a 2016 article for Journal Of Board Game Studies called "Board to Page to Board: Native American Antecedents of Two Proprietary Board Games" Philip M. Winkelman puts forward the idea that the Monopoly game board is based on the Zohn Ahl board which is based on Patolli. He even includes a chart showing the evolution of the game. Definitely worth a read.

    • @DavidMMcCord
      @DavidMMcCord Месяц назад

Yes, I've read that article. I guess it depends on how you define "based on." Yes, there is a chain of influence from one to the other, and there's a psychological / anthropological thought model behind the development of representational games, but I think "based on" is a stretch. Winkleman does make a very valid point that the modern game designer has a tremendous "ocean of free-floating ludemes" to play with! Thanks for the comments!

Most games are regional within certain time periods, but they certainly "migrated" with the interactions of human cultures and communities in history. Today is so very much different! But just because scholars and historians have found evidence of any games extent, doesn't mean they're entirely correct of course. This game might easily have been played from Canada to Panama!
