Uncle Wiggily is a classic board game license, but could have been so much more.

  • The charming Uncle Wiggily stories were a great hit a century ago, but you don't hear so much about them any more.
As with most successful characters from children's stories, there was a board game (actually a few). The age of licensed toys helped to immortalize many cartoon characters (you know who I mean) and Uncle Wiggily was in the race as well.
The game wasn't anything revolutionary - just another race game with card-driven movement and the usual hazards and shortcuts. But it did manage to survive over a century on the toy store shelves. Since the first release by Milton Bradley in 1916 to the current version from Winning Moves, Uncle Wiggily remains an icon of the industry.

Really like your channel. I kind of want to make a home brew version of this game for personal use. I think my nieces and nephews would get a kick out of it. Thanks for all your time posting these great vids.

My set had the plastic pieces, but I was too young to know the backstory to it. Up to now, I've met so few people that have ever heard of Uncle Wiggily that you could have convinced me it was just a dream I had 50+ years ago.

In a hypnotic voice: "The past is merely a dream, and the future a faint echo."

I think now I'm going to research fairy tales, children's books and fables from my country to look for inspiration and see if a project is possible.

I had this game as a child in the 70s. I loved the art, and my board had the nicely curved and intertwined path that made me pay attention to the number sequence as well as spark my imagination. I seem to recall the small rhyming poems were also a part of my version. I saw the game on the store shelves again in the mid-2000s and was excited to get a copy again and play with my kids. I was terribly disappointed to see the simplified art and pathway. Took away any real sense of adventure. I don't understand why they did that.
