Filipino Dama is sort of a "melting pot" game of Checkers - one might say "exotic."

  • Filipino Dama is included in our current Kickstarter Campaign! Here's the link:
    www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
This new Kickstarter will add 5 more traditional games from around the world to our growing Peg Pastimes series!
Just like the "melting pot" culture of the Philippines, this checkers variant takes aspects from several sources ranging from Spain to China to give us this Filipino version. Jump-and-capture is still at the core of the game, but a few different jumping rules and the "Flying Kings" make the later half of the game pretty exciting!
As always, thanks for watching, sharing, subscribing, and all that.

The gameplay of Filipino Dama is like Brazilian checkers with the exception of the board. The FMJD, which organizes the World Draughts Championship recognizes the Filipino game as being in the same family as Brazilian checkers. Brazilian checkers is played on a standard 8x8 checkerboard with the black square on the left hand side of the player. The common folk in the Philippines are able to draw a board and use bottlecaps are playing pieces.

For my international subscribers: The current Kickstarter campaign offers a downloadable PDF containing the rules to all five of the games in this series as a reward for a modest contribution. Hope you can be a part of publishing our Peg Pastimes collection!

American Pool Checkers have similar rules as Filipino Dama has. Variants like this are more strategic than regular English checkers. I prefer playing checkers using the backward unpromoted checker and flying king rules.

Ah yes, Dama. If it's not chess, it is this game you will see played amongst the common folks in the slower hours and days. Most of those games use readily available materials like plastic bottle caps for pieces. It is also a fixture in this country's science and math competitions as it is a distinct category using a modified board.
Suggestion: try playing the "Math Dama" versiom of this game as used by those competitions...
