The Internet browser on the Xbox 360 hasn't worked for YEARS!!! It wasn't killed when they shut down the 360 marketplace... it happened quite a while ago!
It's funny too because Phil Spencer had claimed they were now taking steps for "game preservation" a bit ago but this is only a step backwards. I also agree with a lot of other comments that they should add options for what dashboard you want to use, However I suspect the only reason they don't want to do this is because they need to re-create those dashboards. They probably don't have the files or assets anymore for the old dashboards and re-creating them would mean they need to work with the latest update so it supports all games. Shouldn't be too hard tho, would just take some time. If they really wanted to commit to game preservation then they would not only add the old dashboards as an option but they could also update the emulator for original xbox games and possibly try contacting some of the devs/publishers of the arcade games to see if they could make any of them freeware. Then just add a new tile in the dashboard for accessing/downloading the games you already bought with sorting features.
The thing that bugged me the most is that the box that you click on to play the disc in your tray is stretched out like crazy now. It makes all the pictures look terrible
What would have been nice would be if Microsoft said ok, Xbox 360 is no longer supported, we are no longer making money from this and we really do care about game preservation so let's open the flood gates and give the internet the security codes to enable the hackers to create soft-mods.
The Download History has always been really buggy. Its super slow. If you scroll too fast it will fail to load anymore. Won't always recognize that you own something requiring you to try multiple times to download something. Then you have issues with the Downloads List being slow, failing to load something, not letting you close it. You might have to wait several minutes for the Downloads List to close. As someone who owns around 400-500 Games on the XBOX 360, not counting all the DLC I own. Trying to Download my Purchases is a real pain. Who, that still has and plays a 360 (like me, not everything is back compat, and if you set it 720p output you get supersampling if the game is higher, better performance if there is a distinct 720p mode, and then integer scale it to 1440p with an MClassic) is going to throw it away just because they can't buy anything from the store?
It is gone for everyone. The Gold logo pre-closure only displayed when connected to the internet. The current offline dashboard is the same as it has been since I got my 360 in 2014.
I'm fine with them removing the store from the dashboard but what drives me insane is how the game image now stretches to fit the tile. Clearly shows Microsoft didn't put much thought into this.
Jacob, while it is gone there is a massive loop hole I found out yesterday that allows you to download from the marketplace. I made a few shorts on it and it works!
The one thing I’ve never understood about digital distribution and the end of such is that if you’re going to keep the servers alive to allow people to continue to redownload their purchased content, why not keep the ability to purchase the content that’s already on those servers as well? I get it…licensing, contracts, etc. but beyond that, if it’s still digitally available anyway, why not just keep making money on it as well? Idk…
It would've been cool to look back on but outside of that there was no reason to keep it ngl Except if you wanted dlc and the dlc wasn't backwards compatible tbh
I almost gave up trying to download from my purchase history. Error after error, but if I try half a dozen times it eventually worked. Multi Billion $ company cant keep some servers up for their old system...
Ngl keeping the servers up for the xbox 360 would've probably just lost them money since they aren't making any money from it now, there's no real reason to keep it running outside of nostalgia and even then that's a small fraction who aren't even gonna buy anything anyways Plus purchase history has been broken for like decades lol
Blud it's an almost 20 year old console you can't expect them to support it forever. Do you also get mad at Nintendo because they don't release GameCube games anymore?
One thing you missed is if you press X while hovering over a game in your library it will bring you to the original marketplace page for the game. It wont let you purchase anything but you can still see the dlc and everything else like it was before it shut down
They should have brought back something like blades, that would’ve been cool for nostalgia and its design doesn’t entirely rely on the marketplace and movies taking half of it

@EarthboundX seriously though, the xbox one/series s/series x homescreen is an absolute mess. There's adds for sales and controllers and you can only access your most recent games. It needs simplifying in my opinion, like the xbox 360 or maybe even the switch and ps5.

Certain games will, many of the most popular ones are available digitally through backwards compatibility. The ones that are not, oh yeah it's going to be miserable, but there are plenty of stinkers that nobody wants, games that were delisted from the 360 years ago before closing it was even a consideration. @@jaysoosbeans well I'm not sure because the option for rallys shows up in the pause menu when not in a race, and the parts weren't there in the first place before the 29th, so I'm just genuinely confused. And because I haven't beat the base game yet, I haven't tried selecting the option for rallys
@@A_PiceOfCheese The option for Rally is always added if you install the update but it still asks for authentication. Rally components also show up even if you don't own the DLC and you get a pop-up describing them but trying to install it in a car would just result in an error if you didn't purchase it while it was still available. Try installing any Rally part in the garage. If you can't then the Rally content can't be accessed legitimately anymore.
I don't understand then shutting it down. It's literally just server space running a barebones file server and a cash register server that collects money before allowing you to download a file. The cost of cloud file storage these days is miniscule, esp for someone like Microsoft. The chance of folks still buying games is there. Only reason I can see them getting rid of it is if it gets rid of multiplayer servers, too. PC gamers got kicked in the nuts when Games For Windows Live was shut down, basically neutering MP from a generation of games. Maybe that's what's happening to Xbox 360 gamers?
I hate it but what is there to do about it? It's like getting deep into an MMO, spending hundreds or thousands of dollars over the years, and feeling cheated when the game inevitably shut downs as if it was not always fated to end someday. Any digital service that requires a server will eventually go away, it is all impermanent. What would make me pissed is if they revoked my access to the content that I bought prior to the closure.
As far download history goes, xbox 360 marketplace compared to PS3 Playstation Store, it's pretty much the same experience: It's just a huge list of whatever you ever bought/added to your account without any sorting option going, starting from most recent content and scrolling down older purchases. The only difference so far seems to be the speed the download history loads on 360 now, since PS3, even though is quite clunky these days, still loads much faster than 360.
I'm glad playstation changed their minds after the amount of support for the ps3 they had Microsoft really doesn't care about their community at all this is a prime example right here I can bet you if every xbox player voice's their opinion Phil Spencer will probably reconsider and bring the 360 store back but if yall just lay around in limbo he ain't gunnna reverse anything I mean look at sony that's a example of voicing your opinion and look what happened we kepted our store.
It's probably not gonna last long either, since even Sony has been pretty shitty lately, especially when making decisions and censoring Japanese games as of late. While I'm glad Sony hasn't shut down the PSN store yet, it will be a matter of time before it's gone forever as well.
@Asaylum117 you do got a point and watching mystic's video they definitely been delisting stuff but luckily I bought everything I wanted before this whole problem but for the people that didn't I see your pain in wanting that preservation.
It is virtually unheard of for companies as big as Microsoft to reverse a major decision like this and they have no reason to reverse this one. They don't care about the community or our sentimentality, it is all about profit. They would not have shut it down if the Infrequent purchases made in the marketplace were not less than it costs to keep it going, and they would not turn a profit if they brought it back. The 360 is a discontinued console that no longer receives new releases, players are no longer regularly spending money on it anymore. The large amount of purchases spurred on by the closure is likely the first time they have made a profit from the 360 in years.
We should all make our voices heard about this dashboard change though, they should at least make the tiles take up more then half the screen, either fix that or I doibt it would happen but would be nice to have nxe or blades back as the final dashboard it stays on
I have 2 360s. From what I noticed, the dashboard was pretty slow on the 29th after the store shut down. However, both of my Xbox 360 consoles (OG and Slim) were much snappier and loaded my download history today with no issues. Download speeds were also very slow for about 10 hours after the store shutdown, but was faster afterwards
It is kind of funny seeing so many devoted fans of old dashboard considering that it is considered the worst of the three eras by a large portion of the 360 playerbase. So many consoles have not been updated specifically to avoid getting that dashboard.
Like you say -- the download/purchase history is in severe need of filters. I have hundreds of Rock Band songs that are all listed individually - in purchase order - over the course of 10 years - making it an absolute chore to find anything else in my purchase history between those songs.
They bring it back and you'll legit never use it What's even the point of keeping it up if no one used it lol Only reason you want it back is because they happened to shut it down and it was nostalgia Legit no one cared about the marketplace recently until they shut it down

Its a catch 22 situation. The xbox dashboard looks great with no ads and it actually looks usable, but the market place has gone and the dashboard has changed after 10 or 11 years of looking the same.
I think the primary issue for most users is the unfamiliar layout, people do not like change very much. They could have kept the old dashboard and replaced the middle sections with something else. I am guessing by ads you mean the games and movies that were showcased on their respective tabs. The 360 hasn't had advertisements on it in years.
The 360 being my favorite console and still to this day my most played (I have a Ps5 and Xb1 I barely touch) this shut down has been legitimately heart breaking. I spent nearly $350 downloading a bunch of stuff but I still didn't get everything I wanted and now never will be able to play/access those because I just ran out of time/money. Rip 360 I despise Microsoft for this they didn't need to shut it down how much was it truly costing them?

Good Video Jacob. I will say that I think you are being a little harsh on the new dashboard. I will give you credit about the download history being a mess and should be resolved, but the new actual dashboard puts everything you need on one panel. I didn't want several tabs that just had a large box on the screen that used to show ads. I think this is the better option personally. Also, the new dashboard is much faster it seems. I've used my 360s all day today and the new dashboard seems very quick and responsive.

RIP Xbox 360 Marketplace (2005-2024) 😢
Almost 2 decades of this console and now they are just shutting it all down.

As far download history goes, xbox 360 marketplace compared to PS3 Playstation Store, it's pretty much the same experience: It's just a huge list of whatever you ever bought/added to your account without any sorting option going, starting from most recent content and scrolling down older purchases. The only difference so far seems to be the speed the download history loads on 360 now, since PS3, even though is quite clunky these days, still loads much faster than 360.
Not only is it the PS3 is loading much faster than 360 but on top of that it still RUNS altogether period.

It's probably not gonna last long either, since even Sony has been pretty shitty lately, especially when making decisions and censoring Japanese games as of late. While I'm glad Sony hasn't shut down the PSN store yet, it will be a matter of time before it's gone forever as well.
Sadly the PSN store on PS3 is pretty broken right now, and there's been a lot of delistings. Not sure how much longer it will last.
