    HI Ken, Very interesting video today. Love the variety of plants you have. Dublin Bay rose. Interesting that one because it's a climber. How old are yours and are you expecting them to grow taller? I was tempted to get one but for some reason didn't. Do you like it? Verbena Bonnariensis are one of my real favourites - don't mind the dry and don't take up much room and self seed well. I have a couple of Leycesteria which is also called Himalayan Honeysuckle. Your pink rose with no name is beautiful. I will await it's name. Your garden is truly amazing and beautiful. Loved the walk about. Been pouring with rain down here in Kent today which is quite welcome although my Pink Flower Carpet rose wouldn't agree with me I'm sure - now looking very sad. Thanks, P.

      Thanks Peter. The two Dublin Bays are at least 5 years old now and they seem to top out at somewhere between 6 and 8 feet each year - as I mentioned they are different shades of red but they are very similar and were bought as Dublin Bays (although that's not a guarantee these days). They do carry their flowers for a long time and repeat well, so I like them for the splashes of red in the bed which last a good while. Yes, I find the tall Verbenas add variety and texture to the bed. As I said, this is a difficult bed to keep in order since there are so many large shrubs and groups of various flowers packed in together, but I quite like the natural look. I'm afraid the nameless rose will probably remain nameless.

    • @peterhaymaker7562
      @peterhaymaker7562 2 дня назад

      @@nikkonch Hi Nik, Interesting about the Dublin Bay, I wasn't sure how well they repeated. They're obviously a small climber; Peter Beales roses says approx. 8 feet. I did see one, years ago at D.A's Rose Garden but it wasn't looking at all good - not impressed. Yours look good. I love Verbeana Bon'sis. There are more nameless roses around than any other; they are very popular but rather frustrating too. Good luck with that one.

    Lots of lovely plants there Nik particularly the yellow Loosestrife and the shrimp plant. I may be wrong but the plant with the raindrops on could be a type of Rudbeckia. I watched an interesting video by Bunny Guinness today showing David Austin's son's garden. I was particularly impressed with the way he deadheads (around 23 mins on the video) as I've always removed a spent flower on my roses but he said he doesn't have time for that and waits for the whole clump of heads to die then makes his cut where the new shoot shows. Did your little bird survive? Birds sometimes fly into the glass of my patio doors and I'm surprised the glass hasn't broken as the thud is quite loud. The birds must wonder what they've hit.

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 2 дня назад

      Hi Wendy - yes, I had a look online and those flowers may well be Rudbeckia. I can see the advantage in time saved of just cutting off clumps after all the roses have faded, but I don't like having unsightly dead roses hanging about too long, so I will stick to the individual deadheading. I suppose I have the time. The jay disappeared around the corner of the house when I disturbed it with my watering, and when I looked for it a few hours later it wasn't there any more, so I am hoping he had justed needed time to recover and flew off. We have a couple of badgers in front of the kitchen window at dusk at the moment - they came because of the seeds and nuts I leave out for the birds, but I have now added badger biscuits (yes, that is a real thing!). Despite sticking up black bird outlines on windows and the greenhouse to deter the birds, we still get lots of hits. The scariest thing was when a pheasant flew inside the greenhouse - birds just don't seem able to see the open door to fly out and they fly into the dirty glass once they are inside. Hearing a pheasant banging against the glass repeatedly was scary!

      So, only a few more days and you will be enjoying your garden to the full again, Linda. That must be a relief. And you still have the best of summer to come. I have probably mentioned my poor sense of smell before, which means I prioritise colour, shape and quantity over scent, but this week I was in a garden centre and stuck my nose in a Bathsheba and got a lovely hit of scent, and the same with Arthur Bell, but I have Bathsheba in my own garden and can rarely smell much at all - was it just the still air in the enclosed space or just a lucky combination of warmth and moisture in the air? My Mum in a Million (which I can smell!) had a brief first flush and I've been waiting weeks for her to start up again. Anyway, glad you enjoyed seeing the video. Start planning moving your plants back into position!

      Last year Eustacia seemed to be in flower nearly all the time, but the big Ancient Mariner took a very long break (about a month) between flushes, so I am enjoying the Ancient Mariner to the full while it's flowering. The second flush was not as impressive as the first last year, so, although the individual flowers will still look great, perhaps the overall display won't be as good.

    Lovely nik that first bed really is the bees knees. I wish I had a bed half as good as that. How far apart have you planted the roses there?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 5 дней назад

      You had me walking around the garden with my tape measure in semi-darkness for this Jay Jay! The Ancient Mariner, Eustacia Vyes, Golden Celebration, Lady of Shalott and Desdemona are all 36-48 (about 42 average) inches apart, the ones at the left end (Gabriel etc). had to be packed in a bit tighter due to lack of space (and I also planted a Gabriel cutting late, next to its parent). That large Eustacia Vye "cutting" I have in a pot has presented me with a problem since ideally I would like them all in the same bed - but where?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay 5 дней назад

      @@nikkonchyou can cram them in nik if you wish. One thing I learnt looking at some established rose gardens is it’s possible. I think what they do is prune back hard. And a reduced number of stems. Roses that I see no more than 7-8 inches apart usually have 1,2 occasionally a max 3 stems rising from the bud Union. There is an amount of counter production there but all energy and flowering goes into those one or two stems and of course balanced by cramming them in. I think that’s how they do it from what I’ve seen. Personally I think your getting every inch of rose from that bed there and I think it looks great.

  • @wendybartlett6717
    @wendybartlett6717 5 дней назад

    Looking at all the buds on your Eustacia Vye, it looks like you're going to have blooms for a lot longer Nik. I've just been out watering and mine is doing really well too. I find that my Poet's Wife and Dame Judi Dench seem to be very floppy plants. Could be down to my pruning! My dad's next door neighbour has had a badger in his garden and it's made a right mess digging up the lawn. I was once driving home late at night from my dad's place and there were a few people in the middle of the road arranging blankets on the ground and I assumed that someone had got knocked down. I followed the other cars and as I passed I saw it was a badger. There are loads in my dad's neck of the woods and his cul de sac is called Badger's Rise.

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 5 дней назад

      No, Wendy, it's not your pruning, quite a few (most?) DA roses seem to get floppy as they get bigger. There's never a dull moment here - a young Jay flew into our patio door this evening. He lay upside down on his back for about half-an-hour and then righted himself, then he staggered behind a pot and he was there for at least another half hour. He may still be there. I don't know if he will actually survive. Panicking birds seem to hit our windows every few days, sometimes fatally, despite the stickers we have put on the glass. Badgers tend not to survive long in front of our house - they cross the road from a field and eventually get hit by a car. I had to lift a dead one into the ditch on the other side of the road, which was a mistake because the stench of his decomposing body could be smelled in our back garden for a week or two.

    I wish my roses would bloom as profusely as yours Nik. Having said that, I've been really pleased with my Eustacia Vye and Lady of Shalott this year. I wish the weather would would perk up again as I've been in and out of the rain showers. It was a bit too hot for my liking on those two-three days last week. Just a couple of degrees lower would suit me fine. I used to love the sun and going to hot countries but as I've got older, I seem to wilt in it. I've just fed the birds and there's one that's almost touching me in his excitement to get at the mealworms. He's funny to watch as it's like he's doing a little dance.

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 9 дней назад

      I think Eustacia Vye and to a lesser extent Lady of Shalott are two of my best bloomers Wendy. I took several cuttings of each a couple of years ago, but only kept one of each myself, and both have been on the decking but are now beginning to take up so much space that I have had to move EV away (I don't know where she will end up) and LoS is "octopussing" her arms out all around herself, so she needs to be moved too. Like you I am less keen on hot weather these days, but I like the fresh air - we were on holiday in Mallorca a few years ago when the weather turned chilly and blustery - there were 3 hardy souls (me included) sitting on sunbeds wrapped up in sweaters and coats. I took a nice photo last week of a male chaffinch feeding its baby on the roof of the birdfeeder - the "baby" was about the same size as the father and stood patiently on the roof while dad flew down, picked a seed off the table and flew it up to "baby", and that happened about half-a-dozen times. A couple of years ago I got a photo of a woodpecker feeding its young on our feeder, and again, just by size, knowing which was the parent and which the child was near impossible - you just had to watch who was feeding who. Let's both hope for a bit more warmth over the coming weeks - but not too much!

But at least there were a few new developments to show you all. I have just spent the afternoon deadheading and pruning and actually noticed bits of rust and blackspot appearing, so that needs to be tackled. The potted QoSweden was wilting and turning brown at the top - I am hoping that this was just due to inadequate watering (and lots of sun and wind) and not disease. Potted roses with lots of foliage do need a huge quantity of water.

And I still have seedlings in the greenhouse I must plant out - if only to make room for dwarf beans to go on the ground in the greenhouse. The Philadelphus is browning and less fragrant and Ancient Mariner's and some other roses' - including Desdemona's - first flush is coming to an end, so I'll miss June, but I'm sure there will be other things to look at and enjoy. it's a good job the roses don't all come out at the same time.

      I have tried to buy part of that field, but the owner doesn't want to sell. On the positive side, we do see sheep there for several months each year, so that is something interesting to look at.

      Thanks Lin, but I don't think a 100% failure rate of my cuttings last year makes me royalty! And this week I lost a cutting to a blackbird who decided to pull it out. It's a good job I just do it for the fun of it - although I really would like another Desdemona this year and I have a request for an Alpine Sunset!

    Lovely nik that Eustacia Vye cutting is doing awesome. 2 years old good enough to sell at my local garden centre in one of them larger pots at higher price. Look at that sweet honey you definitely have the baton now with that rose. Splendid. My queen of Sweden is flying this year. Approaching 2nd flush and I see a whole Load of buds. Fantastic roses as always nik.

      I kept that one EV cutting but last autumn I gave away 4 or so, as well as some Gabriels and Shalotts (kept one of those on the decking too, it's about to flower) - the cuttings I took in 2022 were amazing, but last year's all failed - I think I planted them too late. But it was just for fun anyway. I think my Sweet Honeys are getting too densely packed now. QoS is a lovely-looking rose, isn't it?

    Phew what a scorcher is the right way to describe it Nik. Your garden is looking so colourful and really lovely. I've got to get an Ancient Mariner. (The rose not an old sea dog!) Glad to hear that you have a pheasant return. I've not seen my little robin for a few days. I had to laugh at one of the squirrels as I opened the patio door to scare him off the bird feeding station and he hid behind a large pot. I stood and watched and he peered over the top, standing on his hind legs and immediately ducked down when he saw me. Then he peered around the side to see if I was still there. I don't mind him having some food but he's started gnawing through the wire of the container where the nuts are. Expect like me, you've been busy watering all the pots. One of my neighbours waters the flowers in the ground too but I don't. I was led to believe that the roots go down and find their own source.

      Hi Wendy. I did some heavy digging yesterday (finding 3 bricks and gravel in one bed I was clearing of unwanted deep-rooted achillea), and pulled or dug out all our foxgloves this morning to add to the carful of bags of garden waste I drove to the dump. I was pleased to be able to relax after that with this heat. Watching the birds is a pleasure - we have a house martin's nest this year. Walking down the side of the house I often encounter a shocked squirrel who runs up the wall in panic and makes a very loud angry chattering noise. Yes, I do spend a good amount of time watering the pots each evening, and I do water the plants in the beds sometimes too, maybe unnecessarily. Another scorcher in store tomorrow - after longing for sunshine and warmth for months, now I just want it to cool down!

    Lovely garden! Thank you! One question: Roses in pot will be in pot or will be transplanted in the ground eventually? Do you see the difference between rose in pot and in the ground?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 15 дней назад

      If I had enough space in the garden I would plant all my roses in the ground. Roses in pots cannot grow as large as roses in the ground, and they need to be watered frequently, sometimes every day in hot weather, and I think they need feeding more. Last winter I bought a lot of bare-root roses because they are cheaper. My plan was to grow them in pots over the winter and then to plant them in the ground in early spring, but weather conditions made that impossible. But I will plant a lot of those potted roses in the ground at the end of the year. I grew my rose "The Ancient Mariner" in a pot for 2 years, and it was so disappointing that I was going to throw it away, but my wife said I should plant it in the ground, and she was right! In the ground it has become a spectacular rose. so, yes, there is a difference between roses in pots and roses in the ground. A big rose like The Ancient Mariner needs space for its roots in the ground and space to spread out above ground. Small roses do not do badly in pots, but they need watering. Roses in pots have the advantage that you can move them to see them better when they are flowering - and you can surround yourself with roses. Also, if you grow roses in pots first you can see if you really like them enough to plant them in the ground! You can see perhaps that I plant the large David Austin roses in large 50 litre pots to give them more space to grow, while the smaller roses are in 15 litre pots.

    do you think that white, light pink and pink roses from DA perform not the best on the full sun?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 15 дней назад

      I've just had a quick look at those roses in my garden - they look good, quite perky, but I think most roses look best out of glaring sunlight, and the paler roses "glow" against a darker background. Roses of course tend to bleach and dry a lot faster in hot, sunny weather and need more water then, so their blooms won't last as long. A lot of my roses of all types are blooming and shattering or drooping quite quickly in this heat (rather than the sun) and I don't think the DA roses are worse in that respect. But that's just my opinion.

    Lovely garden you have. The older rose towards the end is a Rugosa rose. If dead headed it will bloom again. On meteor it has something called proliferation which can be common with some varieties. It’s where the cells continue to divide even after the flower has formed.

    Which has a better scent, Ancient Mariner or Princess Anne. Thanks

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 15 дней назад

      Neither has a particularly strong scent. I enrolled my wife's nose, which is more sensitive than mine, for this comparison, she prefers The Ancient Mariner and finds that slightly stronger, although she says it has a myrrh scent which is maybe not everyone's preference. I find there is not much to choose between the two in terms of scent. PA tends to bloom more consistently, but both roses have flowers which are very attractive in their different ways.

      It's Belle Etoile - thoroughly recommended. We did once have a double flowered version, Virginal I think, which used to get covered in blackfly - I don't know if that was a one-off or a general problem with that variety, but BE has been trouble-free and a delight.
