  • A silent video apart from the birdsong - turn the volume up to enjoy that - and the occasional passing vehicle! See if you can identify the roses without my help. A slightly cool but lovely evening.

All looking gorgeous Nik and the birds are happy in your garden. Lovely to hear them tweeting away. Your roses are a lot further on than mine. Eustacia hasn't flowered yet but is full of buds and Gabriel is just about to open. I was thrilled to find Super Trouper in the garden centre last Saturday as I've always admired it in your garden.

Thanks Wendy! The birds were really noisy (in a nice way) last night, so I couldn't resist making a video. It sounds as if you will soon be in flower - while many of mine will likely be between flushes. Super Trouper certainly makes a bold and life-enhancing statement in the garden - a big splash of vivid colour which cheers up even the dullest day. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Lovely nik. Your ancient mariners im always jealous of. And it appears your sweet honeys have overtaken mine this year. You have many more buds for sure than I have currently and I don’t see it changing. I think mine is still sulking. Gorgeous nik

Thanks Jay Jay. I am really pleased with my roses this year, just worried that they are going to exhaust themselves too early. They were pruned very early in the winter on the advice of a gardener friend who believes that since we don't get really cold winters any more (and we certainly didn't this year), that would get them off to a good start, which sounded plausible to me. I wonder too if all the wet weather has perhaps helped them along, sending moisture down to the roots non-stop. But I would like some sunshine soon all the same. Moving roses at just slightly the wrong time can be a big mistake, as I showed you with my Ab Fab - it has only just begun to show leaf buds on the stems now, about 2-3 months after it was moved - now that is what I call sulking! Once your Sweet Honeys do get going again, they will shoot up and flower like rockets, as they did when first planted.

Stunning Nik, so much beauty ! The entire garden is very lovely. My roses are just starting to open up here, I did get my nose in to Strawberry Hill the other day and I've had a good sniff of Crazy In Love. My Blush Noisette is full of buds I can't wait for it to bloom, it's the second year in my garden so I'm hoping it will be lovely if the sun can ever come back ! Not good here today wind and rain sadly, hope you are enjoying your beautiful garden and your roses, take care.

Thanks Linda - I am very happy with the way the garden looks at the moment - although I have been out in the damp breeze today dead-heading quite a lot of spent roses. That's the bit I always forget about rose growing - the more roses, the more deadheading. But that hasn't stopped me just spending an hour looking at rose sellers online - I have listed over a dozen to consider buying - at some point. Since I haven't got the space which is really required for the roses I already have, this is probably not a good thing. I haven't experienced the scent of Strawberry Hill, but it seems from what I have read and heard to be rather lovely (that reminds me of John Le Mesurier's last words "It's all been rather lovely"). Blush Noisette I know of course, and that is certainly one to sink your nose into. Yes, we need some sun to complete our rose grower's fantasy of sitting surrounded by warmth, light and fragrant colour as we sip a cooling drink. That reminds me, time for a cup of warming tea.

Wow! I was watching it twice Nik because I’m not so familiar with all the David Austin roses. Thanks for the names! Your garden as I said before has a lot of jewels, it’s a rose paradise. Most of them have lots of flowers, PAOK is perfect & huge flower, Sweet Honey has bunches of blooms, Ancient Mariner is beautiful and Blush Noisette is charming pink, was that the small roses? Your grass is also well mowed. 👍🌹

Thank you. You must be a true rose lover to watch my video twice! I always try to limit the length of my videos to avoid exceeding people's attention span, and I was afraid that the lack of a commentary might make this video less interesting, but the birds were singing so loudly (their song sounds deafening on my phone) that I couldn't resist, and I let the roses speak for themselves. Yes, the small pink and white flowers belong to my Blush Noisette, a rose which I am finding increasingly attractive. I have been very lucky with my David Austin roses - the choices of variety I made happen to have been good choices, at least that's my opinion. Also the situation, orientation and clay soil of my garden have produced much better results than in my last garden which had chalk soil and was in a warmer and drier part of England in a less open situation - luck plays a large part in our gardening successes and failures. Sweet Honey is an amazing rose, not the most attractive, but as bare root plants they reached a height of 4-5 feet in their first year and flowered prolifically and almost non-stop until the frosts arrived.

@@rosegardengems Just bear in mind that Blush Noisette is really a climber. I bought it to climb next to the door, but last year it wasn't growing quickly and I let it flop down and spread instead. I cut it quite short last winter and it is in a pot, so maybe it will stay as a bush. It does have a delicious scent (to my nose anyway).

Thanks Gavin. Don't know if you saw that I left a question for you on Lin's last video about the QE2 rose you've just bought. Basically I was just asking for you to pass on your experiences with her (QE2, not Lin!) maybe not now, but when she is at her best. You could add it to a comment on one of my future videos?

      @@nikkonch Hi Nik
No I have not seen it yet. I only bought it yesterday at my local GC. There are 2 large buds on it ready to open in next few days etc
The buds are reddish pink and I'm only hoping it is QE2 after the debacle I had last year! I ordered it online from H and they sent me the wrong Rose 3 times!. I ended up with 3 Platinum Jubilee's. I gifted 2 away. Fair play they then refunded me also. Typically they had a Chandos Beauty there ( I already have that one ) in full flower but not QE2. I should know by the weekend! Have you got Chandos ? ATB Gav

@@gavinparry5426 Thanks for the prompt reply Gav. Yes, I bought a bare root Chandos Beauty in the autumn, but she only has one bud so far and is a bit lopsided with only one fairly decent stem at a 45 degree angle, so I may have to be patient with her. I'll also wait patiently for your feedback on QE2.

@@nikkonch My CB is very similar Nik so I spoke to Elizabeth at Apuldram Roses on this (check them out, very good!) and she suggested the 'Tomorite trick!'....after my current flowers finish.....cut down to 6 inches then feed with Tomorite once a week for 6 weeks. Will try this after current flowers open.

@@gavinparry5426 Cutting down to 6 inches sounds pretty drastic at this time of year - but she must know what she's talking about? I'll await news of how it goes later in the summer.

So many beautiful roses. What is the name of the rose in 3.22 and 7.20?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  Месяц назад

I thought people might be curious about some of the roses, so I listed them as a comment. The first one that interested you is called It's a Wonderful Life - it is producing a lot of growth and flowers for a new bare root, but only has a slight fragrance. The second rose is Blush Noisette, technically a climber but I seem to be growing it as a bush, maybe because it's in a pot and I am keeping it cut back, very fragrant and free flowering. I am tempted to plant another as a climber.
