      I thought I had answered this already, but cannot see my answer. So - To tackle blackspot/rust/fungus you need to pull off affected leaves including those on the ground and put them in your dustbin. Keep the ground under your roses clear of fallen leaves and weeds. Remove any leaves still on the rose at the end of the year. Spray the bush with Roseclear or any similar insecticide/fungicide - this will help combat disease (and kill aphids which weaken the plant), and you can spray monthly as a preventative or if you continue to have problems. When watering your rose, water the ground, not the leaves - wet leaves are likely to get diseased. Feed the roses with any rose feed at least twice a year - the first time in spring and then the second time after the roses have produced their first flush of roses - this will make the plants stronger, healthier and better able to resist disease. Plant roses in sunny areas when possible. Some types of rose are less healthy than others - so try to buy healthy roses which are less prone to disease.

    Garden's looking really great Nik. Loving your Ancient Mariners. They're all looking so healthy and look at all those blooms! I bought Desdemona today as I wanted something with a different colour to all of my other roses. I'm supposed to be on a no buy but she was so hard to resist. I asked my sister-in-law if she'd heard of a Brambling and she had. She's so much better than me at identifying birds. Thanks for the tour of your wonderful garden Nik. It seems to get better and better every time I see it.

      Thanks Wendy. I think the garden is at one of its seasonal peaks at the moment, so it will be fading a little now - but it will peak again later on. Meanwhile I will be keeping an eye on my newish bare roots to see how they perform. I've almost been treading on baby birds in the garden this week - there have been several chaffinches just sitting on the ground a foot away from me as I was walking about, and I had a long chat with a curious young blackbird who was hopping around between my pots at arm's length. They seem to have no fear when they are so young. No bramblings though, I think it'll have to be a cold winter before I see one of those again. I love Desdemona - I think she is the rose I would miss the most if I lost all my roses. But that is not going to happen!

    you have very beautiful garden and your roses are just perfect! The ancient mariner is looking gorgeous! what is your favourite rose? I have desdemona potted las year and is looking really poor, in the beginning of the season got a lot of black spots and had just a few blooms this year.

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  18 дней назад +1

      I'm really sorry to hear that Desdemona has been disappointing for you. I think she is my favourite rose. I thought she was a very healthy rose, although not the strongest grower. But your growing conditions may be different - another rose whose flowers I absolutely love is Abraham Darby, but although he seems to perform brilliantly in warmer, drier climates, he does not do at all well on the Welsh borders and succumbs to blackspot as the season goes on, although this year I am going to use sprays like Roseclear more regularly on him, feed him a bit more and remove spotted leaves as soon as possible. He is already in the sun in his own pot and gets regular water, so that's the best I can do. The colour, shape and scent when he does flower are amazing - but flowers are few and far between. I can understand why David Austin no longer sell him in the UK though - he is not a healthy rose. My roses are not perfect at the moment after prolonged very heavy downpours this weekend which battered and damaged them - so lots of supports are going in and a lot of damaged flowers are being removed. But they'll come back.

      @@nikkonch I bought Abraham Darby on some sale at the garden shop but I think it needs more time to show his beauty, the brunches are a bit weak at the moment and not holding well the flowers. Anyhow I'm planning to buy Ancient mariner :) greetings from Warsaw :)

    Lovely to see all these roses. Your Ancient Mariner is fabulous. Having not much space left, I need to decide between this, Silas Marner and Blush Noisette. I can see you're not that happy with SM - I am attracted to the red stem it is supposed to have but wonder if that sprawling habit is what you get from this rose. Scent wise, how would you compare these 3?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  21 день назад +1

      I hate being asked about scents! I don't have a good nose. My personal favourite was the Blush Noisette when it began flowering since it was the one I could really smell and it was a very nice fragrance, but this evening, a week or two later, now that many of the flowers are browning the scent is less attractive - although in a hot, dry summer those dying flowers would probably have fallen off by now. I enrolled my wife's nose and she positively disliked the current smell. She assures me that the Ancient Mariner smells the best, but quite likes Silas - I get little from either. Looking at the David Austin site their scents are variously described as musk/clove (BN), myrrh (AM) and Old Rose (SM), so that personal preference and (nose sensitivity) plays a part. The rose that may not flower as frequently as the others is the Ancient Mariner, but I find its displays are glorious when it is flowering. Silas does flower a lot but the flowers are small and less impressive. It also depends on the width of your gap - AM grows upright, so fairly compact, whereas even David Austin describes Silas as having a "wide, arching" growth (which to me equals "sprawling"), but if you are happy to put in supports, that's possible. I haven't allowed BN to grow as a climber (yet?), but it does flower well - it has the smallest blooms, but they are tightly packed, SM has medium sized flowers and AM quite large. I can see the attraction of the red flowering stems (which are green lower down) of SM, but it depends on whether you are looking close-up or at a distance. I doubt this has made your choice any easier, but good luck!

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  24 дня назад

      Hi Ken. You just motivated me to go out and sniff Sweet Honey. I don't have a good nose and it's a chilly evening, but I got a vague scent, although I stuck my nose in Blush Noisette as I came back in, and that gave me a very strong perfume. But scent is very individual and women seem to have a better nose - my wife picks up things I think have no smell at all. I have a fourth AM in the front garden too! The big one had a long gap between flushes last year, unlike the other AMs that flowered pretty continuously but not as profusely, so I'm interested to see how they all perform this year. It is definitely a healthy attractive rose, I just have this concern about the gap between flushes. By the way, your garden looked very impressive in your sister's video - she clearly loved it, so be careful that she doesn't try to take it over!

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  10 дней назад

      Neither has a particularly strong scent. I enrolled my wife's nose, which is more sensitive than mine, for this comparison, she prefers The Ancient Mariner and finds that slightly stronger, although she says it has a myrrh scent which is maybe not everyone's preference. I find there is not much to choose between the two in terms of scent. PA tends to bloom more consistently, but both roses have flowers which are very attractive in their different ways.

    What's your views on Peter's Persica & Generous Gardener Nik.
    I was nearly tempted to buy one or both the other day. Any negatives on them? ATB Gav

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  24 дня назад

      Peter's Persica is one of my new bare roots and it's nowhere near being a full-sized climber yet, so I'm not an authority. It is certainly a healthy rose as far as I can see so far. It's been flowering for a few weeks now and still has new buds appearing. The stems seem robust, solid and the growth upright so far. I suspect that flowers will fall apart and not last long in hot weather and will quite quickly lose the vivid yellow as they age, but that may not be a problem if she flowers fairly non-stop. The Generous Gardener I've had on that fence for several years now, but it's a rose I barely notice because it's lower growth is hidden by a wide ceanothus which makes it difficult to get near the lower flowers. The buds topping the fence look upright, but the bright southern skies behind them make them difficult to see for most of the day, The leaves look lovely, healthy, dark and shiny. It is probably in the worst possible place in my garden, on a north-facing fence surrounded by tallish shrubs, so the fact it has survived, or even flourished, must be a recommendation. It took a little longer to get established than the Bathsheba next to it, but the stems now look strong. It is not one of the earliest flowering roses, just getting started now - I have not been impressed with the flowers yet - the one I showed here was rather droopy, and I don't remember it repeating very well. BUT if you have a sunny spot to put it, it might be a better performer. I think I have seen someone showing it online with obvious satisfaction I will try to show it properly in flower in the next week or two - if you can be patient!

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  24 дня назад

      Thanks Jay Jay, I do think it's looking very good at the moment. I wish I knew what the secret was. Then I'd know what to do next year. It's just dumb luck I'm afraid. Last year I was overrun with greenfly from the spring on, but this year hardly any. I think it's just the clay soil, the heavy rain and the low temperatures. On the other hand I've lost all my pears this year and the tomato plants are shivering and looking sorry for themselves. I suppose all the DA shrubs are a year older and stronger now, so that helps. And Sweet Honey doesn't need any help (as long as you don't move it!). It's just struck me that the soil level has been sinking as the roses in the pots have grown and not been moved - obvious really, but not something I had thought about - so I'll have to repot them this winter. I'm lucky the low soil levels haven't had an obvious negative impact so far. See what I mean about dumb luck? Anyway, we know gardens, particularly rose gardens go through patches of showiness and dullness in the season, so this is one of my good patches. Console yourself that you have probably had a lot more dry weather, warmth and sunshine to enjoy where you are over the past few weeks!

    How long does it last and then scatter?

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch  12 дней назад

      Difficult to judge these things since it depends on your local weather, which here has been quite cool to warm, around 20 degrees C (68 F). And I tend to look at the bush overall, rather than individual flowers. However, I did note one particular flower which was open and at its most beautiful 3 days ago, so had presumably been growing from a bud for a week (?) and that flower is still on the bush today, fully open but not yet drooping or showing signs of shattering. So it's a flower that stays on the plant a while, but not more than two weeks probably.
