You have lovely views from your garden Nik. The grass in the field is looking better than mine! All the wet weather plus me walking on it has played havoc this year. I've not even managed to mow it yet and I'm dreading that first cut. Your tulips are looking very nice. I too like the yellow and red ones.

I haven't mowed yet either, and won't be able to for a while if this wet weather continues. I accidentally discovered a method of "cutting" some of the longer grass though - I scatter birdfood in those areas and the pheasants and crows (and squirrels) seem to pull up the grass as they feed!

Thank you. I am just as excited as you! Especially since I have a large group of new roses this year, so that as well as welcoming back to my garden all my old friends I will be getting to meet a lot of new friends too. The buds are forming, the party will be starting soon!

If you look at my Community area there's a photo of the squirrel enjoying a camellia!

Hi Nik, what a lovely view of the lambs. My lawn is muddy too, no chance i can mow it for a while, still get some parts of the garden that are waterlogged when we have a lot of rain. Your roses are looking good I have no idea what is causing the tiny leaves could it be a nutrient deficiency ? Maybe it's the weather ? Let's hope it sorts itself out once Spring gets going. That naughty squirrel ! I think they can be partial to a camellia bud :( Thanks for the tour round it's all looking very lovely.

Thanks soulgirl! I just checked the online BBC day-by-day weather forecast for the next fortnight - and there's a chance of rain nearly every day. In my reply to Wendy here I explained how I am tackling the longer grass! I am supposed to be creating a new bed at the top of the lawn, but with waterlogged heavy clay that's not happening yet. On the plus side - no watering required outside and the roots of what's in the ground will be getting all the moisture they need!

Very nice nik. The small foliage I hear it could be as simple as time of year. But more likely if your other roses are growing normally and proportionally, it could be a lack of something or excess of something. Could be nutrients, sunshine, water, cold etc. this is what I heard. But I think is just not entirely happy at the moment. As you know when the leaves first start to develop they kinda just grow as they shape. To see that fully devolved shape but in micro nano size I think something isn’t right but hopefully it will sort itself. I see yours has at least some nice sized leaves. I think you’ll be ok. When I spoke to da and sent them pictures of my PL they said it was normal for time of year….
Squirrels eating buds, That’s a worry we have many of them too but thankfully never seen any damage. Cheers nik.

The good-sized leaves may be remnants from last season, I'm not sure. I saw some insects crawling around in the compost, so maybe they are damaging the roots. I'll leave it a couple of weeks and then maybe repot it if it hasn't improved - I'll be giving all the roses a spring feed soon, which may help. That rose has had the same treatment as all my others, so it shouldn't be suffering from any lacks or excesses of water or nutrients, and the stems look healthy and green. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. I hope it's not like the tiny-leaved rose (now on the big compost heap in the sky) I found in the garden and nurtured in a pot for it to produce just the one tiny flower in the summer.

Thanks both for sharing! Of all my roses… I too have micro leaves coming through on my Penelope Lively… she is one of my only potted ones. I’m going to do some more investigating tomorrow

@@I_love_u_sow hi there. I know a few people now have said there Penelope lively has small micro leaves at present. Whilst others are saying they have normal growth. If you’re confident you haven’t overfed yours I’d be tempted to leave it for time being we are only in March. That’s what DA said to me anyway. If yours is potted a move into a potting shed if you have one might be something to consider, but I’d be tempted to just wait it out.

@@I_love_u_sow This is getting interesting. It seems to be affecting roses which have been OK in the past. The weather of course has been much wetter this year, but nearly all my other potted or ground-planted roses are covered in a good amount of foliage now whereas this one rose looks more like a newly arrived bare root. Jay Jay has one "normal" Penelope Lively and one sorry-looking one, and my affected Abraham Darby is next to its unaffected parent. AD was retired by David Austin, on health grounds I believe - mine certainly is the rose most prone to blackspot in my garden. Is there perhaps a weakness with PL? The flowering season is still a way off, so I'm not too worried about my AD yet. But it would be interesting to know what's happening.
