Watch out for Excitement (Clip)
Yoga Sutra 2.15 tells us that even good things can be problematic because we're afraid of losing them. The key to yoga is developing equanimity through the highs and lows of life.

The Way of the Bodhisattva Chapter 3: Transcending Hesitation

In this video I look at the final four of seven practices to develop the desire for enlightenment. They include rejoicing in other's good fortune, requesting teachings, asking teacher's to remain in the world, and offering up of merit. Such practices, I contend, embrace a positive and hopeful outlook of the world, and practical steps for getting there.

I look at Yoga Sutra 2.12 which gets us into how the obstacles of mind are influenced by the way the mind works, that the "store house," or that which remembers all our past actions, in fact, is the very root of the obstacles of mind. As long as the store house is present, there will be obstacles to practice. Some of the causes (karma) of the obstacles we are able to see clearly, as they are in...

    • @ericdaishinmccabe
      @ericdaishinmccabe 7 месяцев назад

      Good question. I'd suggest that there is no "objectively proper" zazen posture. We are all different in our bodies. What works for one person is not going to for another. Each of us has to establish our own posture based on our own body, and comparisons with others are often unhelpful. That said, there is a right relationship with gravity that each of us must find for ourselves.

    I have just read your article and I want to thank you very much for it. When I started with zazen I was always very soon deeply in thought about zazen, and I felt miserable about it because I thought that thinking was not „allowed“ during zazen. But thinking about zazen during zazen was so wonderful! I always had the feeling that within this thinking I got deeper into Zazen than when I just tried to control my breath and thoughts. I was so lucky to have a teacher who encouraged me and said that if thinking helped me to focus then that was a very good practice for me. And now I hear that you too do not damn thinking during Zazen and I am very grateful for that. And yes, feeling and thinking are strongly connected during these periods on the cushion. In exchange I am doing „thoughtless Zazen“ while waiting in the queue in the supermarket. :-)

    There’s a reason you’re saying six minutes isn’t enough time to describe how to practise zazen. You explain the phrase Shikantaza, then go on to describe a wealth of mental activities to do whilst sitting! In which case, it’s not just-sitting, is it. How do you explain Master Dogens phrase, shin jin datsu raku, body and mind have dropped off? If body and mind have dropped off, there’s no one present to direct attention, there’s no one present to notice anything at all! Sitting is to adopt the posture of the Buddhas, and not to do any secondary tasks. Don’t count breaths, don’t focus attention, don’t observe, notice or witness. Don’t try to stop thoughts, or try to stop a wandering mind. Sit as you are and let whatever happens happen without dividing yourself into seen and seer. When all effort stops, the one making the effort has stopped.

    • @zenfields7563
      @zenfields7563 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for commenting. Just sitting is very hard to do. Most people I know need some technique to start. So, I don't recommend "just sitting" for everyone all the time. My teacher would often offer the technique of watching the breath, and would later suggest that watching the breath isn't always necessary. But for people just starting, it can be very challenging to "just sit." But it sounds like you have it all figured out. Best of luck!

      @@zenfields7563 my tone is challenging and a bit rude, but from a good place. I teach zazen in London, in the Soto lineage of Master Dogen. I get a bit perplexed when I hear others describe Shikantaza as just sitting and then recommend an activity to do whilst sitting, as a prelude to Shikantaza. It doesn’t make sense to me, hence my last questions to you, what’s easier than sitting cross legged doing nothing, and what activities can we do to prepare us for inactivity? Zazen is very simple, but we overcomplicate it. I felt you were over complicating it. When I teach Shikantaza, I teach it from straight away. The fact that everyone takes several years to get that they don’t need to do anything is neither here nor there, but adding in a period of mental activities whilst starting out is just going to prolong understanding Shikantaza.

    My experience of mountains walking has been learning with the mountain Teliquin. Teliquin is quite amused by the arrival of the city of Colorado Springs. From the seat of the mountain can be seen the glowing mass of ground based illumination. When witnessed from the mountains perspective this is a wondrous thing to behold. In time spent camping and writing music in Pike National Forest, I have harmonized with the pace of the mountain. As was so eloquently mentioned, the pace of the mountain is so much slower than our built human environment, social value systems and human ways of knowing. The gifts I have received from the mountain are numerous, the first to mind is the joy of climbing the Manitou Incline. The trail is 2,768 steps and climbs 2000 ft in elevation in less than a mile. I have learned from the trail to take life in steps. Eventually the steps fade away and I find the space of quiet eternal peace. Life is no more about ends and beginnings, winnings or losings, the significance of my life becomes less until I have found that the appreciation of beauty and service to others, are the things that matter most to me. The second lesson I will mention in this collection of words, was a conversation I heard in the deep night by a group of owls. In the conversation I detected the ancient society of owls. I could feel a depth in their communication that was far older than any language of humankind. With a resonance and completness that seemed unfathomable. I felt myself not as witness out side of the circle but somehow, I also knew this language myself. This is the darma. Blessings of Bear Clan, Miekell Cottonwood

      Have to agree 👍 with your words. This emphasis of natural rithm is so clear, obviously simple and deep. Thanks to dear Teacher 🙏

    Thank You, Daishin, dear Teacher. I really love this guided video! Although I practice zazen for a quite a long period of time, I find deeply inspiring and helpful this 30 minutes video. I like to sit and to do kinhin with You 🙏 With Metta. Best regards!

      @@zenfields7563 it's my pleasure. Thank You for support! Work You've done and still continue is of great value. I found Your channel something about a year ago or bit more. Enjoying videos, Dharma talks. 🙏 Can I ask You a question? Is it possible to write You a letter ✉ where I could ask a couple of questions about practice? May be You could give me advice when it will be convenient to answer? I can't become the member of Zen Fields (the website) or make some donation because I'm living in Russia and "thanks" to this situation with war, You know, it is almost impossible to transfer any money to the western countries.. 😢 But, thank You again. A lot of Metta and deep appreciation. 🙏☀️

    I would very much like to read the whole poem of Keizan. Can you please tell me where I can find the text? If I knew the title I could perhaps find a german version. I like this series very much, I have heard it twice and am sure I haven‘t got all of its treasures, so I will surely listen to it a third time. Thank you very much! 🙏

      Hello, I'm sorry but the poem by Keizan was orally transmitted to me by my teacher. I don't know where to find it at this time. I'll see if I can find out, but can't give you any promises. Glad you are enjoying the series!

      @@zenfields7563 Thank you very much for your answer! I hadn't really expected one so long after the upload of this video. It is very kind of you to try to find the poem. But don't bother too much. I have come to think that perhaps it makes these lines even more precious not knowing the context. Just like the mysterious phrases of the pre-Socratics, so enigmatic and with so much space around them for interpretation. I love hearing you say so quietly "an empty cushion in the wait of a flame". I could hear it again and again. Feel it again and again. 🙏

    The mind expanding and contracting like the breath - that is a wonderful and very beautiful description. I am afraid that during the next weeks I will expand over this thought. 😊 What I like most about Shikantaza is that it is so very beautiful. I can‘t explain it, but that is my main feeling. Thank you very much.
