Understanding Ignorance Clip: Buddhism and Yoga

  • I share the yogic definition of "ignorance" or "avidya". Vidya comes from Vid meaning knowledge, but it's not the same kind of knowledge as information. Avidya means to not know, and similarly is not the same as not having some information. As it is defined in Yoga Sutra 2.5 Avidya has to do with seeing the non-self (your own body/mind) as the self.
    I then contrast this idea of ignorance with the Buddhist perspective as found in the Dhammapada, pointing out that they are exactly the same.
    We then proceed to practice, incorporating this teaching into the hatha yoga class.
