The Millennials' Guide to Keep Conversations Alive
If you don't watch the whole video - here's what I hope you remember. Your life will be much better when you talk to people! And that can be hard - especially cause COVID kept us away from each other, we have screens frying our brains, and every day it seems like life gets more stressful. But, it's important that we prioritize it.
The methods I refer to in this video are HEFE, time framing, prompting, and conversational threading. Conversations don't have to end at dead ends - I'll make sure of it.

Number 2 is definitely my problem--I feel like the king of awkward town during small talk! What is interesting, Chris, is that "Hey how are you" is treated by most people as a close ended question--"good, how are you?" is the expected response and anything else comes off weird! I wonder what other linguistic calls-and-responses there are in history or modern day--where it is custom for one person to say one thing, and the other to respond, as a form of greeting. The first example I think of is the Arabic greeting, "As-salamu alaykum," which calls for the response of "Wa alaykumu s-salam." What is interesting about "hey, how are you?" is that it is a question, technically, instead of a statement.

hahah, 'king of awkward town' is hilarious! Yeah - totally agree. "Hey, how are you?" is definitely a part of the script with an automated response (most of the time). And I remember when I learned those phrases in Arabic - it's like a call and response, which is an interesting rhetorical tool to initiate conversation.

This was very informative and helpful. Two suggestions: 1. Could you turn the volume up on your end when recording? You've got a fairly quiet voice, so I've got to almost max out the volume to hear you well, especially if there's any competing noise when I'm listening. 2. Could we maybe go with "break it down more" instead of "dumb it down"? Just sounds better. Again, truly appreciate these videos. Please keep doing them.

I genuinely believe he was dog whistling and talking to a separate audience and using Joe Rogan to do so. Joe thought he was having a convo but Carlson was using him to peddle his extremist rhetoric. He’s the definition of someone who begets stochastic terrorism. Those that can hear him do. Those that don’t, don’t. Simple simple things I keyed in on…. “The color purple! There are SO many better films than that….” The color purple is a movie about a black woman’s experience in the early 1900s south. His total dismissal and scathing remarks about it really make me wonder. He says things like “I’m from San Francisco, but I can’t live there anymore because of all the….” Then he tapers off. That was intentional. Tucker operates with such precision. He disturbs me greatly. In Lex Friedman he speaks so glowingly about Koreans that it REALLY makes you wonder what he thinks about other races… ESPECIALLY considering his “great replacement” conspiracy he loves to tout. LOOK at the comments under many of his Twitter videos and posts. It’s simply vile white nationalist racism. As a linguistic expert.. I would really love to hear your opinion. His lex Friedman interview was very offputting. Tucker Carlson very subliminally dog whistles. The writing is on the wall….

There are two wars going on that we have nothing to do with other than being responsible in a way of starting one, and being forced to support both sides in the other. Your statement about to BS artists shows your hand and your bias. Joe is an average dude that talks to people of all walks of life. Tucker, like him or not, goes after the stupidity of both sides. If you watched the podcast he spends more time going after the right, who he is always said to be aligned with, than the left. This is literally 2 duds just talking about crap, yet you seem to have a problem with that. Says a lot about where you stand.

As always, I truly appreciate your analysis. With regards to Tucker, I don't believe that anything he ever does is an afterthought. I think it is all very strategic because I believe he thrives on controversy. He likes to make headlines, and the more outrageous the better. In fact, I think it's more important to him that being factual. Even court cases brought against him and Fox said that his show should have been looked at more as news entertainment and commentary rather than actual/factual news. That's why I've never really been a fan of his. I'd prefer to bring people together than get them all amped up. Joe, on the other hand, also says some pretty controversial stuff, but his approach seems much more thoughtful, and he seems to actually enjoy the process of digging in to see if we're coming to the right conclusions.

I have the opposite take. I dont agree with him on a ton of things, but I appreciate him at least asking uncomfortable questions. Right, left, doesnt matter. The reason so many people like him is that he goes after them all. That used to be celebrated in this country. But we have gotten so hyper-politicized that its impossible now. Rogan is a staunch liberal on almost all things. The moment he came out against boys beating girls in his sport of choice (MMA) he got dragged through the coals because it didnt fit with the liberal narrative at that time. And thats scary. You are either all on board are not even allowed in the door as far as that goes.

I didn’t know the speaker before I heard this, but I was certain he had a big future ahead of him in the Democratic Party. It wasn’t surprising to see him run for president just a couple of years later. This was great. I will readily admit that I'm not a fan of either of these guys. I don't like the way each of them behaved when given their "pulpit". However, I am impressed with their conduct in this interview. I am especially impressed with Chris Cuomo's part in this discussion (at times it seems that Tucker doesn't really take this seriously with his giggling, but maybe that's a defense mechanism). I think Tucker's best contribution here is what he says at the start of the video where he admits to being incredibly mean to Cuomo, even though he's never met him, and he's honestly not sure why he's done it. Then he talks about how important it is that we get to know people before dismissing them or mocking them. You then echoed those comments at the end of your video. I keep hoping we'll all take that to heart. It's so important to listen to people and hear them out completely, and that's probably especially true for those with whom we disagree. We don't have to ever agree with them, but I think it's important to try to understand how they've reached their conclusions. I'm still not 100% how I came upon your videos, but I'm glad I did. You do a great job. Thank you!

you're a nice man. that speech was pure cringe, wrapped in fear mongering trigger phrases, designed to cause anxiety in her audience. from the performative pitfalls to the setting of a kitchen, it came off to me as diminishing a successful woman who had been elected state senator as a poster wife for where conservatives feel women belong. when you listen to her speak on the issue in her state on the floor of the house, she a much more serious and formidable individual. I don't agree with her on most things but would have respected her message more if she didn't assume that she had to live action role play as a housewife to talk to the nation. She comes of a strong and sincere in almost every other speech I've seen, where here she chines off as anything but. I appreciate your analysis though and will continue to follow your content. I care about communication greatly and feel it is something few people hone their skill on.

Lots of comments have been made that this appears more like a hostage video. Leaving aside the content and trying not to be influenced by it, she talks about her kids having no future and then her smiles broadly. seems to suggest the this lack of a future is something she is keen on. In reality she presumably has been told to smile to be relatable and has been doing it automatically rather than tie it into the stuff she is saying. it has also been commented that the idea of her to give the response was to have the Republicans attract more female voters. One would have thought that a better way of doing this would be for her to appear a more powerful and self confident figure. The choice of her rabbiting on about her kids in the kitchen is more a 1950s view of women. The fact that it was so easy for SNL to ridicule it shows how artificial it was. Generally these State of the Union responses are totally unimportant and forgotten within a week. This one was so bad it will have a longer life

Think that added to the point you were making with the rapid change in demeanors. If she was toned down a little the gap wouldn’t have been as extreme and it would have been better.

Thanks for watching - always one of the first. And absolutely! There was simply too much going on and it lacked synchrony.

Great assessment. Thank you for these lessons that you do so plainly and clearly. Could you recommend a video of what you would consider an ideal apology? I see so many that are inadequate, even if the intent was good, but I'd love to watch someone do it correctly. Thanks again!

Thanks for watching! That is a great question and I don't have an example of a good one immediately off-hand but I'll think on it and possibly return to this comment. You're right - most viral ones are typically that way because they were not good apologies. There's a decent amount of research that has gone into apologies - I remember in grad school I learned about studies on apologies so I used this video as a chance to revive that knowledge. My guess is that the most impactful apologies are done in private - but still, there's gotta be some great examples that are public as well.

Some say the video is fake. Aren't you picking that up? Did you notice the disappearing ring on the finger? What's going on here?!? 😮

I can't stand the dramatic music in this video. That alone tells me this guy is suspicious.
