Just thought I'd share, but I ended up discovering a TON of old Ministry drum, and other sounds from the "Twitch" time period. A while ago, I had downloaded the entire library of sounds from the Fairlight CMI that some kind soul had recorded into wav files. I was exploring the collection and discovered MANY of the sounds used on "Twitch" and all of Al Jorgensen's projects from that time period. He used a lot of Fairlight CMI samples. Many of the drum sounds were completely unchanged from the way they were on the albums. I'm going to have to go back through the collection to find the specific samples. I didn't make note of them because at the time, I was just noodling around exploring the sounds. It's definitely on my agenda to dive back in there and find those sounds again. There's a LOT of sounds in that collection. I just figured I would share that. Ministry definitely was using sounds from the Fairlight CMI library back then. Also, a fun technique that I copy to make cool industrial drum sounds is the technique that Big Black used. They recorded rhythms on a Roland TR 303 or 606, onto tape, but then played the tape back at slow speed with some reverb on it. I've tried to emulate this on a DAW, but it's never perfect. Even stretching the audio doesn't work perfectly. The sound just falls apart.

Dude, I knew he(they) was using a lot of Fairlight. I read in many interviews that Al doesn't give af about production and he's just making music without changing shit with the gear he has at that time. as an owner of an oberheim xpander for many years i have to say that the big reason this synth was used was because it has outputs for each voice and each voice can have a unique program. (and obviously the filter modes) the actual synth sounds bands use from the xpander are pretty simple. nitzer ebb belief/showtime for example. spot the filter modes. flood also processed nitzer with lots of eventide h3000 ultratap... echoboy rhythm mode is similar. this is what current manufacturers miss... give us moar outputs! i use arturia m12 now. it sounds pretty good. even fools me sometimes. maschine mk3 knobs work better than xpander's glitchy optical encoders. ha ha ha. u-he repro-1/sequential pro one is also very good for more aggressive sounds (same curtis chips as xpander but much snappier)

But back in the day (I am 49 now), I had my Ensoniq ASR 10 sampler and one of the best things I did was sampling the Janet Jackson "Rhythm Nation" album. It was not as dry as "Construction Time Again" but what makes those sounds solid is basically no release time. I then added a bit of distortion from the Yamaha 01V digital console I had and I went nuts. It made the entire song, NIN. And that is the beauty of sound design.

@@Tonepusher I remember back in the day I used to use Digital Performer, the measures were blocks. Before that Masters Tracks Pro in a Atari ST. When MOTU updated DP with colors and more visible data inside each measure something was lost. Now the "equations" are not in your own brain but in your eyes. When you have the info in your brain, you patch in your brain and you get brighter. When things turned visuals... now you get distracted and in a way "serviced". That pushed the decay of the knowledge. So today people buy out of hype or aspects, but they do not know what to do with the gear, they do not even have their own sound. Is very shallow, they say "vinyls are better", no, they are not. Some are good, depends on how they were produced, the majority are just low quality. So, those drums are nice but today you can do the same with Logic pro just fine.

I thought that until i got my hands on the ensoniq Mirage ,use it for percussion so its about it sounding electronic, it has two sets of curts voltage controled amp and filter chips, memory and processing was so expensive win it was made that it was cheaper to use one set of chips for first stages of the envelope and one for the decay, the operating system loads on the disk ,so there are 3erd party o.s. for it that throws away the sample function and opens it up as a 16 voice wavetabe synth with 14 lfo's per voice ,you dump samples into via midi sample dump , the thing sounds cool goes well with the ppg 2.2 and the ensoniq sq-80 I don't know what gear you are working with but software and a lot of newer remake just dose not compare to the original machines @DSPsWifesBf

Actualy the zap hit drum (you call laser drum) and the gunshot snare was also highly use on 80s pop and prog rock band like YES or Genesis and Peter Gabriel was one of the first to devellop that gated verb sound snare to there sampling fairlight and other E-mu Emulator and SP 1200, Michael Jackson also make a heavy use of that kind of sound in BAD and Dangerous album, but we must admit that young gods , front 242 and skinny puppies make those roland drum machine and E-MU and Akai sampler sound more badass , by adding also metalic sample and other guitar and distorted stuff.

This maybe a dumb question, but could you please make a video showing how to make gated kicks and snares? How to get that delayed or pumping effect on the reverb. Thank you in advance. Another great video btw.
