    I LOOOVE old school drum machine sounds. There's something about them that I can't explain. Wether it's for layering or using the original sounds. There's soooo many iconic records that were created with them. Do you guys have favorites or maybe a drum machine that I forgot that I should've mentioned?!

    I've been using samples from the Alesis HR-16 for my industrial metal project. It's the one Godflesh used on Streetcleaner and sounds super cold and relentless in such a cool way. Love the vibe all those old drum samples have, it's like an instant hit of atmospheric nostalgia direct into my brain. Brb, finding my mirror shades.

    A bunch of the Luxa/Pan productions in the late 80's/90's (Basically anything Al J and Paul B touched) also used the Fairlight CMI (which resampled a lot of other machines but had that peculiar AD7524 8-bit/32khz grit). They bought one with the Altantic Ministry royalties and then used it for a lot of stuff. A lot of that early WaxTrax sound was basically them trying to figure out how to use the PageR sequencer on it. Paul said in an interview that they couldn't figure out how to get it to go to page 2 of a sequence, which is why all of RevCo's loops were 8 bars long!

    Love the video. I’ve been researching this stuff for years. As for the R-50e, I still haven’t been able to find definitive proof Ministry used it. There’s a video floating around where Paul Barker is asked which drum machines they used and he said they made most all their drum sounds. Who knows.

    • @Tonepusher

    The Kawaii R50e just sounds great on any electronic track. Although it sounds like the drums Ministry used in the Wax Trax era, that's actually confidence. As others have mentioned, Al Jourgenson actually had a phenomenally expensive Fairlight CMI that was even used live until it finally broke down from so much abuse. A lot of the drum sounds were allegedly created during the period where Al worked with Adrian Sherwood on the Twitch album. That makes sense, as Sherwood was an early adopter of sampling.

    • @Tonepusher
      @Tonepusher  3 месяца назад

      Yeah, most of the time people are saying that the R50-e is the ''Wax Trax'' sound and I also read that it was the Fairlight. However the CMI Fairlight is a sampler, so it could be any drum machine loaded in that thing hehe

    • @chriswareham
      @chriswareham 3 месяца назад +1

      The sounds are so similar, but the R100 and R50E weren't released until two years after the Ministry recordings that it is sometimes claimed to have been used on. I guess it's just the subtle artifacts that low bit rate sampling leaves on drum sounds that make them sound similar.

    I think many of those drums samples in those machines are very outdated for more actual EBM-Industrial, one important thing that told me Ben Watkins (Juno Reactor) and other professionals is: "Make your own samples". Is the only way nowdays, good drum sounds for those 80s-90s years but if you want really powerful and smashing Snare sounds you have to make them through layering and processing techniques, I do it with my Roland JV-2080 drums For example so those old machines are good as a source of drum layers to work with, those samples by itself alone aren't enough "punchy" to cut thorugh the mix of modern productions(also depends how extreme you want the sound!), same as with the Kick and some other drum sounds. In my case the only that gave me better results in my Industrial tracks is design my own samples!☢

    • @Tonepusher
      @Tonepusher  4 месяца назад +3

      hey, it's a combination of 2 layers. First layer is basically the FMFM waveform with sinefold distortion and and EQ assigned to an envelope after the distortion that is acting as a filter. Second layer is basic detuned sawtooth bass. Also the main trick is to assign the velocity to the filter so you can create the rhythm by writing your riff using the velocity.

    Good video!
    A couple comments, though. And I promise I'm not trying to knock/ bash you at all or be a dick, haha.
    When you were talking about the TR-606, you showed a TR-06 (modern digital Roland machine). Was that purposeful, or? Haha.
    Second - and warning, industrial snob comment incoming (heh). [I wouldn't say I'm like the biggest connoisseur or anything, but I know an alright amount, and this is just my opinion.]
    To me, 2/3 people on the thumbnail aren't ones I'd consider like - emblamatic (?) of industrial. Yes, NIN and Ministry have some legit industrial stuff, especially early on - but *so* much of their stuff is more just like rock/ metal.
    Which is probably a big reason why they're more popular. They're what non-industrial fans think of when they think "industrial," heh.
    And it's a little annoying when you hear people talk about "industrial," and they're really talking about "industrial rock" or "industrial metal" (which often aren't very "industrial" at all). Not talking about you, tbc - it's just something I've seen over time.
    Don't get me wrong, I like some "industrial rock/ metal," but I'm like, let's not get that confused with actual industrial 😆.
    I know I prefer my industrial to be made with almost all, or *all* electronic instruments. And I say this as someone who played guitar before I got into synths, etc.
    If you make it too guitar focused, it just becomes - not really industrial, imo.
    Anyway, just some thoughts I've had for a long time, and it makes sense to put them here, heh.

      @Tonepusher  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hey thanks for the comment man.
      Damn, I know what a tr-606 is and yes It's a mistake. Too many hours of editing that's what happens 🤦🏻‍♂️
      And I guess I agree with you on maybe half of it haha "Industrial" is a very broad term. It's like saying "metal"...There's many many different genre of Industrial. I mean Ministry is industrial metal so is Rammstein and they're VERY different...To me they're all industrial 🤷🏻‍♂️ And quite frankly I'm too old for that "labeling/gatekeeping" thing. haha

      @@Tonepusher Yeah, it happens! No worries. I even thought it may have been an intentional gag, haha.
      And it's not really gatekeeping, imo; it's just about what fits the style and what doesn't. I like all the bands mentioned/think they're good, but I wouldn't consider Rammstein, for example, industrial - industrial metal definitely, but that's more a metal subgenre.
      It's annoying when I have, for example, even been looking at a list of *electro-industrial* artists/ bands, and too many of them end up basically just being rock/ metal acts, haha.
      Tbc, I also understand why you chose Trent Reznor and Al Jourgenson (sp.?) for the thumbnail - it makes sense to go with the popular people. And to reiterate, I'm not bashing/ knocking you, heh, or even criticizing you, or the video, or the thumbnail. These are just my thoughts, and it made sense to put them here.
      Who would I choose? That is a bit hard, admittedly. Ogre (or Ohgr?) would definitely stay [or Ogre and Cevin Key], and as for the others, maybe Bill Leeb [of Frontline Assembly], Chris Carter of TG, maybe a member or members from Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, etc. I was a big fan of Velvet Acid Christ for a long time (well, I'm still a fan of the music), so *potentially* even the main guy behind it.
      But again, your thumbnail choice wasn't actually a bad one, especially since Trent and Al have made some legit industrial tracks. These are just wider thoughts.
      And also again, good video! I'll have to get around to watching your other related ones.

    Where did you get the samples?

      @Tonepusher  2 месяца назад

      It's samples I gathered over the years. I don't remember honestly. Most of them are from free sample banks online.
      I also have samples that friends sent me. 👌

    Did you use any post processing fx on the drums in this video?

    • @Tonepusher
      @Tonepusher  5 месяцев назад +1

      no! they are unprocessed samples
      However the last one (RY30) are from Splice so they are processed. BUT having this said I would prefer using the original samples if it was to compose original material.
