Roosevelt Brown's Moment in the Limelight
This video is based off an article from SABR:
sabr.org/gamesproj/game/october-6-2001-cubs-roosevelt-brown-has-his-moment-in-the-limelight/
Thanks to the uniqueness of September expanded rosters, minor league players get their shot at playing at the big league level. While many, if not most, September call ups fizzle out, a few will get their moment in the limelight, and Roosevelt Brown had his for one day in October 2001.

How J.D. Drew Became the Most Hated Player in Baseball
Просмотров 153 тыс.День назад
There are very few players throughout baseball history that were universally hated by fans, media, and executives alike. Perhaps the most scrutinized one that fits that description is former right fielder J.D. Drew. He was despised before ever setting foot on a big league field, and that hatred, along with his lack of passion for the game, followed him for his entire career. He's someone that c...
That Time a Catcher was the Winning Pitcher in a Thriller
Просмотров 3 тыс.14 дней назад
Thanks to recent changes to the MLB rulebook, it's a very, very rare situation to have a position player come in to pitch when all of his team's pitchers have been used. 24 years ago, we saw just that however, when a catcher was the winning pitcher in a thriller of a game. The Most Incredible Career Resurgence Of All Time

It's difficult for players to be out of baseball for one or more seasons due to injury, and work their way back into the game. The Pitcher Who Threw a No-Hitter in His Debut*

There have been over 300 no-hitters throughout MLB history, and perhaps the most unexpected one came in August 1991, where a 21 year old rookie achieved one of baseball's finest accomplishments. *While technically not his big league debut, it was his team debut for the White Sox, and it was the first time he ever recorded an out at the Major League level. The Most Miserable Record in MLB History

It goes without saying that, for the most part, poor performing pitchers will lose many more games than they win. The Worst All-Star Player Ever Made the Team By Accident

It goes without saying that the players that make up the roster for the all-star game are among the best in the league. The Dumb All-Star Game Controversy Involving Nolan Ryan

Historically, being selected to the all-star game in Major League Baseball is an honor, but not a requirement. More interesting is 1977 when he played for 4 teams. Kingman was also reputed to be a louse as a person, especially in dealing with female reporters. There is also story that may be apocryphal regarding his final season. He hit 35 home runs to end the 1986 season with 442 over his career. There was no question that he could still hit the long ball, but another two seasons would have gotten him to 500 and up to that time every 500 home run player had been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Since Kingman in the HOF would be a joke, the owners conspired not to sign him after 1986. Who knows if that's true but it's hard to believe that nobody wanted a guy who could hit a homer when needed. Then we go back to his being as terrible a person as he was a player.

kingman was a surly SOB, and i'm old enough to remember when kingman had sportswriters and baseball executives in a panic that he would hit 500 homeruns, which in those days meant an automatic ticket to the hall of fame. collusion took care of that problem lol. i believe we will see a similar situation with giancarlo stanton. while he was a far superior all around player in his younger days, he has devolved into an entirely oft injured, one dimensional player . with three years left on his contract, i put his odds to reach 500 at 50/50, with his final nine years of his career known for being injury prone, being the slowest runner in baseball, all while adding zero defensive value. should be interesting!

I remember the controversy surrounding J.D. Drew when the Cardinals acquired him. I knew none of the particulars of his dealings with the Phillies - and am surprised to learn how convoluted they were. I also didn't know what a once-in-a-lifetime stud Drew was in college. I did note that he wore "7" - Mickey Mantle's number. Expectations were high for the young man. And perhaps he overvalued himself. One thing about professional athletics is you can never rule out injury. I don't know if it's fair to say Drew only gave 75% - but, like Mantle, it may be fair to say J.D. Drew didn't take care of himself as he should have. That probably is true of at least half the population of the World. I had to comment because I didn't know just how widespread the antipathy toward J.D. Drew was. This kind of report makes me think of Hal Chase, who played a century earlier. Chase had his own agenda it appears, and gambling was part of it. I never heard J.D. Drew being accused of cheating or throwing games - but it appears he cheated himself and Baseball.

Answer this. Why do baseball players have so many injuries? I mean they are stationary on the field except pitchers and catchers. They sit in the dugout and yawn and spit and chit chat with other players. They only bat maybe 8-9 times a game depending or innings. I never have understood this.

Scott Boras ruined so many high draft picks. Boras never understood that to get the real big money came in future contracts. Boras also pushed steroids on his clients. Fact Boras has 2 clients in the HOF Greg maddux and Adrian Beltre. Holding out from the Phillies and making it personal cost him his goodwill. trading Drew for Wainwright worked out for the Cards.
