  • What happens when an underwhelming pitcher is out of baseball for 3 years and decides to come back on a whim? He produces the greatest season anyone has had in nearly a century, obviously.

Chris Hammond's 2002 is one of the best, and most unexpected, feel-good stories in baseball history. As a Braves fan I watched a good number of his appearances that year and he was incredible. He started out good, not great, then became almost impossible to score on starting in early June. We were all rooting for him to sneak his ERA under 1.00 by the end of the season when he started getting close. If I remember right it finally dropped below 1.00 in second to last appearance of the season.

It was the Hammond and Holmes show that year, 2 guys who were not in baseball the previous year, while both ended up with the 2 lowest ERA's on the team.

@@MassBoost The entire bullpen for the Braves was great that year. Hammond and Holmes were arguable the best, but Mike Remlinger had one of the best years of his career, Kerry Lightenberg was great, and rookies Tim Spooneybarger and Kevin Gryboski both had nice seasons as well. In fact, the Braves worst pitcher out of the pen that year by ERA was closer John Smoltz (at a still solid 3.55) thanks to an absolutely disastrous outing against the Mets in the 1st week of the season.

This is an inspiration to anyone who ever gave up on something, but then thought, "Well, maybe I'll give it another shot."
And getting released by the Indians was a blessing in disguise, as he ended up working with Leo Mazzone on the Braves. Great pitching coach.

Hammond wasn't pitching for the final spot in the bullpen, there were multiple spots available that spring. Darren Holmes also signed a minor league contract that spring after not playing in MLB in 2001 and also won one of the spots available. Holmes went on to produced a 1.81 ERA that year, and it was the Hammond and Holmes show that year, as 2 pitchers who were not in MLB the previous year come in and produced the 2 lowest ERA's on the team.

Also no Hammond's ERA was not half of the 2nd lowest ERA, as Joey Eischen in 53.2 innings had a 1.34 ERA, Buddy Groom in 62.0 innings had a 1.60 ERA, and Darren Holmes in 54.2 innings had a 1.81 ERA, which were all lower than Dotel's.

He mentioned a minimum of 70 or 75 innings I believe.

Believe it or not, he has a world series ring for the reds in 1990, going 0-2 with them that year.

I believe Chris Hammond also has the Reds' record for longest amount of time between games played for the team, the only other player I can think of is Brett Tomko who rejoined the Reds in 2012 after having last played for them in 1999, although it doesn't really count since he never played a major league game after rejoining the organization.

seasons from 20 years ago dont mean anything today. what retired players did 20 years ago isnt important today.
