The GREATEST Ninth Inning Comeback In MLB History

- In a 2001 midsummer game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros, Houston was finishing up a comfortable win to keep momentum down the stretch while fighting for a playoff spot. That was, until the Pirates completed a comeback so grand, we may never see anything of that magnitude ever again.

“The Pittsburgh Pirates, a team playing for practically nothing” is their unofficial motto.
I was at that game... until I left after the top of the 9th. On the way home I was listening to a Pittsburgh radio station. They had a news break and mentioned that the Pirates had won 9-8. I thought to myself "Why are they mentioning last night's game?" Then it hit me that 9-8 was not the score from the previous day, and that I had walked out and missed this epic finish. I had a great seat to watch a winning homerun to right field, being 5 or 6 rows up in the upper level, on the first base side of the field.
That would be my luck. That’s why I stay til the last out the few times I make it to the park ... which is difficult since they quit selling beer after the 7th inning.
That is why you never leave the park early. Dum dum lol
A big shame you missed history. In baseball anything can happen at the very end!
You weren't alone!! Look at all those empty seats behind home plate. How many other people were kicking themselves that they missed the comeback.
I had that happen to me at the Rockies home opener this year. I left after the bottom of the 8th with the score 6-2 Rockies. Tampa went on to score 5 in the top of the 9th to take a 7-6 lead, and then the Rockies walked it off with a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th
I refuse to believe this is how you talk in real life
bruh that’s cold blooded
Yeah not trying to be mean but it's the unnatural cadence and kinda feels like someone is yelling a run-on sentence at me... Bro just relax and act like you are telling the story to a buddy in the bar or something... You'll get it
Lots of baseball content guys have a similar cadence. OP needs a better mic / sound isolation, and practice. Lots of guys overdo cadence / volume early on and then settle into something that sounds more natural but still “voiceover-y”. Honestly, sounds like a slight speech impediment as well, but nothing that should really be a problem, and some of which could maybe be overcome e.g. focusing on middle & end of word “d” & “t” sounds like in “middle”, “greatest”. Keep at it OP, gl
I'm SO interested in the topic but his narration makes it impossible
@@saulspeaks2557 Yeah man... same... But hopefully he recognizes constructive criticism as people giving him honest feedback to improve and doesn't think it's all a personal attack. If so and he finds his wheelhouse I would like to see this remastered. The content is there... that's the hard part. JUST DON"T DO AI OR TEXT TO SPEECH OR I WILL FIND OUT WHERE YOU LIVE AND USE YOUR ADDY FOR EVERY BS THING I SIGN UP FOR UNTIL THE ROBOTS TAKE OVER
On September 26, 1912, the Reds were losing 9-0 to the Cubs heading into the top of the 9th inning. The Reds scored 10 runs, 5 of which scored on 6 consecutive 2 out walks. They lost 11-10 after the cubs scored twice in the bottom of the 9th, on four walks and a hit by pitch.
That is incredible . 6 walks straight .
What wild pitches! 😂
@@mafia_dave32 Well, it was 1912. When it came to pitching, anything was possible. It does remind me of a World Series comeback that has been largely forgotten: In game 4 of the 1929 series, the Chicago Cubs had an 8-0 lead going into the 7th inning. A win would have evened the series at 2 games each. However, the Philadelphia Athletics, aided by Cubs centerfielder Hack Wilson losing two balls in the sun, scored 10 runs in the 7th and went on to win 10-8. Now down 3-1 in the series, in game 5 the Cubs had a 2-0 lead going into the 9th when disaster struck again, as the Athletics scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win the series.
@@zanti4132some force wanted them to lose lmao
When the manager came out to remove Michael Jackson, he told him to Beat it"!
Hee Hee
@@higgy04 Who's Bad? You are today MJ.
Damn. Retrospect is a B. Probably should have left him out there.
I listened to this game on the radio as an Astros fan. I had a bad feeling when Giles stepped up with the bases loaded because I remembered the Astros blew a 9-2 9th inning lead against the Brewers the year before, which was also the first game of a double-header. So I had a feeling this would happen again. Then it happened.
I was there. We were going to the 2nd game of the doubleheader that night, so decided to stay for until the end of this game. So glad we did. It was nuts.
Bronson Arroyo rockin the Justin Timberlake look
This isn't the only thriller involving Michael Jackson...
Hee Hee
I was at the ball game in Pittsburgh that day. But not this one - the nightcap of the double header, a game which featured some of the shoddiest base running in history. At one point a pinch runner managed to get himself out in a rundown between third and home after starting on second when a clean double was hit. How I wish I'd seen the first game instead.
Being from Cleveland that 2001 game was the day before my birthday.. man what a night that was..
Nice spotlight. One of your best videos. But I'm biased since I love a good comeback story. BTW nice JaguarGator9 reference with the remark about two nickels. 😂
@@raschticky Ok then. Good to know.
@@raschticky That's funny because I think I heard Dr. Doofenshmirtz say it too,
Thanks for watching
*There was no way of knowing it at the time it happened, but the Indians comeback win against the Mariners cost the Mariners **_passing_** the 1906 Cubs for most regular season wins (they finished with 116 wins instead of 117).*
*EDIT: I originally typed "tying" instead of "passing".*
Actually, the Mariners did tie the Cubs. Both teams had 116 wins. That Indians game would have given Seattle the record.
@@brianhollis5355 *Yeah I know. It's fixed now. That's what I get for posting at 3am. Oh well.*
The Cubs won 116 games in a 152 game schedule in 1906. Thus their record for best winning percentage (.763 116-36) in the modern era still exists.
@@blu3collar949 *It was a 154 game schedule. They had 2 ties/rainouts that didn't count and were never made up. Then the Cubs lost to the White Sox in the World Series, 4 games to 2.*
i forgot bronson played for the pirates. this was a nice throwback game!
In 1958, the Giants went into the bottom of the ninth inning vs the Pirates down 11-1. They got 12 men on base, but left the bases loaded when the last batter popped out and lost 11-10. A magnificent comeback, demonstrating for the few fans left in Seals' Stadium and the wide world of sports to see that not all magnificent magnificence is rewarded with the thrill of victory.
I also remember that the Dodgers won a game around that time by 1 run by getting 3 consecutive homers, I think in the 9th inning, and at that time no team had done that before.
I had the pleasure to be at this game. Well, not a pleasure for most of it, and honestly, I was standing under the left-field bleachers for the ninth inning on my way out of the park. But never did I think I would witness history that day.
The greatest comeback I ever saw was when I was coaching teen ball. The other team got 18 runs in the first inning. In the bottom of the 2nd , we got 18 runs to tie the game, then ended up winning 26-21. Craziest game I coached by far…
The 2nd inning makes it less crazy. I had a shutout going winning 10-0 but had to get lifted for innings limit and they brought in the coaches son to get 3 outs and we lost 11-10. Not only that but it happened against the worst team in the league.
I attended this game and I'm visible in the crowd following Castilla's second HR (3:06-3:10). Everything happened so quickly that (at first) I didn't realize the Giles grand slam ended the game. For a few seconds I thought "so what does that make it? Did they just tie it up?" Also, for the record, my Astros won the nightcap handily, and went on to win their division, so no lasting damage from this crazy comeback.
It was a lot of first or second pitch hits during that inning. One at bat after another in a hurry. That must feel amazing to have been part of a historic game!
The greatest come from behind win has to go to the Pirates, when Roberto Claminte hit his ninth inning inside the park walk off grand slam home run. It is the only time that it has ever happened in MLB.
I miss Jim Thome, Kenny Lofton, Omar Visquel, the Alomar brothers, and Albert Belle..........
I like that "two nickels" bit.
Nice video. Cool bit of history. The A's did something like this back-to-back a few years ago against the Giants. They rallied from 5 down in the 9th to tie it in one game, and win it in the 10th. The next day they scored 4 in the 9th to win again. The dates are Aug 15, 16 2020 if you are interested. It was a wild story that was not covered. Would love a video about it.
Thanks for the this great vid: Very inspirational and narration.
When Houston took out Michael Jackson, they should have put in Jim Morrison instead of Wagner.
Or if they had to go with an opera composer, they should have gone with Verdi.
June 18, 1961 first game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park, Sox down 12 -5 in the ninth with two outs and a man on first. They scored eight to win. I was sitting in the right field bleachers with my father. Never forget it!
No Tommy Lasorda meltdown makes it inferior
Halfway through the 9th inning, when I saw the name Adam Hyzdu, I knew I remembered this game from SportsCenter recaps, as Brian Giles went on to hit a walk-off grandslam...
Great video- I subbed and turned on notifications. One thing I would have liked would have been the score of the game shown throughout the video- it was hard to keep track of the deficit that the pirates overcame ❤
I remember listening on the radio as a kid in my parents kitchen going crazy for this meaningless win
great video man!
An MLB analysis video which included a Dr. Doofenshmirtz reference, and I’m glad I was here for it 😂
0.02% chance to win means if 5000 games reach a similar situation, the odds are one of the games will see the team that is losing come back to win. Lotteries offer far worse odds, the people still buy lottery tickets.
Man, you should see another comeback the 2007 Indians had I believe. I was actually at the game. Detroit took a pretty big lead on us early on, but we widdled away and won, I believe in extras, 12-11. I'd ve curious to see highlights if that game, since I never go to see it to conclusion. My dad had work the next day.
Great video. Great history. Never knew about this.
Thanks for watching.
Believe it or not I was at this game, 10 years old.
did you stay until the end?
The first game I ever went to was a Sox game at Fenway Park. I think it was like 1990 or 91. They were playing the Blue Jays and were leading 10-0 into the 7th. My dad wanted to beat traffic, so we left the game but the Jays came back and the game went on until the 18th or something, which the Jays won.
For such an epic improbable comeback, I expected a better call. Even if the team stunk. It deserved better IMO. Guy treated it as a run of the mill walk off. Hell it was a grand slam for gods sake, show a little more energy lol.
There is a Cubs/Mets game from was Wrigley where the Cubs were down 9-1 late in the game when Dave Kingman homered,Heity Cruz hit a grand slam and Kingman homered again in one of the most thrilling walk-offs in history but i haven't been able to find the video or date of this forgotten bomblast...help anyone?

Here's the box score from that April 19th, 1980 game: www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CHN/CHN198004190.shtml
Wasn't a walk off, but a 7 run 8th inning, and it was Kingman with the grand slam
Good work I subbed
Great video sir
This is far from the biggest comeback ever. The 1968 Cardinals came from an 11 nothing deficit to beat the Giants. That is just one example. I'm sure there are others.
MLB history goes back over 120 years or so. Are you certain this was the greatest 9th inning comeback ever? And if happened once, it will most definitely happen again.
Good breakdown.
After the Indiana South East game you might need to remake this video 😂
Cmon man you gotta have someone do voice overs for your videos
June 4, 1989 Jays vs Red Sox
I cannot believe what I just saw!
What about the Mets-Red Sox 1986 World Series. The Mets were down in the 9th inning by two runs, & two outs, & two strikes and no one on base. All the Sox needed was one mark strike.
If this is not your video, can you tell me what the odds of that happening with it with only one strike left to win the game up by two runs and no one on base and they lost
Nice Phineas and Ferb reference
Where is the cup head reference
Nice
Was Buckman in the crowd and Steve Bartlett
Warching?
Your cadence and tone of voice makes this unwatchable
Michael Jackson did commercials for McDonald's "Mighty Wings" when he was the Indian's closer. They were very poor.
Crazy how baseball works. Baseball will also mind fck you in so many ways.
That's got to be the shittiest call of a walk-off by the home announcer that I have ever heard.
michael jackson is one of only 5 pitchers to give up 10 or more grand slams, i only remember cause his name is michael jackson
jason kendall is one of the all time leaders in hit by pitch so makes sense he got hit
The greatest 9th inning comeback win with 2 outs, no men on base, down by 6 runs, and a bunch of struggling hitters waiting vs a reliever who registered 5 consecutive outs before the comeback. This record will be hard to beat imho.
a 3.00 era for a reliever is not good
@9:14 He was out!

@RUclips Your platform sucks because of the ads
Didn't he go by MIKE Jackson?
I want to watch this but your voice is killing me.
I'm at 1:39, and there's been no worthwhile content yet. I'm giving up.
Interesting subject matter... but I can't bear this dude's voice.
That is not the greatest comeback ever!
9th inning my guy reading is fundamental
This guy just might have the most annoying voice in history…
ai audio ?
Houston deserved that because of those awful unis.
Also, it’s asterisk, not astrick.
It's astroisk
Oof.. That voice makes this hard to get thru. Sorry bud.
:)
WRONG Cleveland Indians WAY UNLIKELY
I did a video on this inning too. Glad to see someone else remembers this inning. ruclips.net/video/OZyWu5t8Mdw/видео.htmlsi=cCh9xgOpMc6Lelg_
This dude is trying to make his voice sound like Jomboy.
I can’t stand Jomboy. I’d take this dudes videos over Jomboy any day even though he is trying to sound like him.
Negative reaction given because of the voice. Learn how to portray a story verbally without reading from a script or at least sounding like a script. Plus the echoes of sounding like you're in a tiny room are annoying.
