The GREATEST Ninth Inning Comeback In MLB History

  • In a 2001 midsummer game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros, Houston was finishing up a comfortable win to keep momentum down the stretch while fighting for a playoff spot. That was, until the Pirates completed a comeback so grand, we may never see anything of that magnitude ever again.

I was at that game... until I left after the top of the 9th. On the way home I was listening to a Pittsburgh radio station. They had a news break and mentioned that the Pirates had won 9-8. I thought to myself "Why are they mentioning last night's game?" Then it hit me that 9-8 was not the score from the previous day, and that I had walked out and missed this epic finish. I had a great seat to watch a winning homerun to right field, being 5 or 6 rows up in the upper level, on the first base side of the field.

Lots of guys overdo cadence / volume early on and then settle into something that sounds more natural but still “voiceover-y”. Honestly, sounds like a slight speech impediment as well, but nothing that should really be a problem, and some of which could maybe be overcome e.g. focusing on middle & end of word “d” & “t” sounds like in “middle”, “greatest”. Keep at it OP, gl

On September 26, 1912, the Reds were losing 9-0 to the Cubs heading into the top of the 9th inning. The Reds scored 10 runs, 5 of which scored on 6 consecutive 2 out walks. They lost 11-10 after the cubs scored twice in the bottom of the 9th, on four walks and a hit by pitch.

It does remind me of a World Series comeback that has been largely forgotten: In game 4 of the 1929 series, the Chicago Cubs had an 8-0 lead going into the 7th inning. A win would have evened the series at 2 games each. However, the Philadelphia Athletics, aided by Cubs centerfielder Hack Wilson losing two balls in the sun, scored 10 runs in the 7th and went on to win 10-8. Now down 3-1 in the series, in game 5 the Cubs had a 2-0 lead going into the 9th when disaster struck again, as the Athletics scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to win the series.

In 1958, the Giants went into the bottom of the ninth inning vs the Pirates down 11-1. They got 12 men on base, but left the bases loaded when the last batter popped out and lost 11-10. A magnificent comeback, demonstrating for the few fans left in Seals' Stadium and the wide world of sports to see that not all magnificent magnificence is rewarded with the thrill of victory.
I also remember that the Dodgers won a game around that time by 1 run by getting 3 consecutive homers, I think in the 9th inning, and at that time no team had done that before.

For a few seconds I thought "so what does that make it? Did they just tie it up?" Also, for the record, my Astros won the nightcap handily, and went on to win their division, so no lasting damage from this crazy comeback.
