Outfielder Rocky Colavito was once the winning pitcher in a game for the Yankees, and it wasn't even in extra innings.
There was a stretch in 1968 in which the Yankees had several doubleheaders in a row scheduled, on account of a few rainouts. In a game early in this stretch, the Yankees went down 5-0. Even though it was only the fourth inning, Ralph Houk brought in Colavito to pitch, knowing that the pitching staff had several doubleheaders coming up.
Colavito threw a couple of scoreless innings, and the Yankees came back to score six runs to take the lead. Regular pitchers took over from there, holding the lead, and preserving the win for Colavito.

I think, though I’m not certain, that Mark Buerhle came in to pitch on zero days’ rest in the White Sox world series run after being the starter in the game before.

Not quite. Buehrle did record a save one game after his start...but he was the Game 2 starter, which meant there was an off-day before he returned to pitch a scoreless 14th inning in Game 3.
However, I figure that postseason probably wasn't what was being asked about, because quite famously, that _has_ happened since 2000. Randy Johnson was the winning pitcher in relief in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, the day after throwing seven innings and getting the win as the Game 6 starter.

What a bizarre game. Yeah, having the reliever with starting pitching experience get ejected after only recording a couple of outs is a rough break. But then again, so is relying on "Way Back" Wasdin to pitch in a close game.

The current rules wouldn't prevent this scenario.
If the bullpen is empty, a position player can come into pitch.

Randy Johnson started game 6 of the 2001 WS and relieved Schilling the next day in game 7

I'm confused. Why didn't the Rockies put out Mayne, considering he was the one pitching he could've hit, and was likely a higher success to get a hit instead of the guy with 6 career plate appearences. Granted it worked out anyway so it doesn't matter, but just doesn't make sense to me.

Mayne had a slight wrist injury at the time. Perhaps he may have been healthy enough to pitch but not hit. That injury was the reason he wasn't in the starting lineup.

      @@walkoffstudios I guess that's reasonable.

@@walkoffstudios Thanks for the explanation. I came into the comments to see if anyone had asked that question because it made no sense to me either.
